JAMIE GENEVIEVE’S SPRING LOOK

“Springtime make-up is about achieving that dewy look using pastel hues. Starting with a glowy base is key. I love our VIEVE Skin Nova daily. Finish off the look with a blush. Build the colour from the apple of your cheek blending towards the hairline to bring the face to life. Use the same shade on the cheek that you’ll use on your lips and swept across the eyelid. LUKE HERSHESON ON STYLING YOUR BOB

“The best way to style a bob at home is either air dried or a loose tong for some movement. They work well with texture and movement. Make sure you use a few pumps of Almost Everything Cream on wet hair first to weigh it down. Leave to dry on its own and add a few random large-barrel tonged pieces through. Tuck behind your ears to help create a bend around your face while it’s drying. The ZHOOSH FOAM is a great volume mousse to use with this style. It’s a transformative dry foam solution that immediately brings flat hair to life, delivering effortless oomph and lift.” hershesons.com 18 The London Magazine

LASER FOCUS: TIPS FROM DR MARWA ALI

Combination treatments which target skin conditions with a blend of laser technologies are the perfect solution for those in need of skin rejuvenation, without needles. I favour this treatment path because it can be completely personalised to each client. Photofractional technology is a combination of two of the best laser light technologies in the industry, IPL and ResurFX. In younger skin the combi-technology can target acne scarring, and for mature skin, it also targets texture, wrinkling and pigmentation. At the Harrods Wellness Clinic, I use the Lumenis Stellar treatment to deliver a complete skin rejuvenation solution. The Lumenis Stellar M22TM is known for its efficacy in treating different types of pigmentation, such as sunspots and melasma. Spring is the perfect time to begin the treatment, to help you reveal your most confident self. Dr Marwa Ali, The Wellness Clinic, Harrods. harrods.com

Expert preventative care The experts from OneWelbeck debunk the myths and underline the importance of catching and treating bowel cancer early

T

his Bowel Cancer Awareness Month, we talk to gastroenterology consultant, Lisa Das, and gastrointestinal surgeon, Sarah Mills, at private specialist facility, OneWelbeck, to quash the myths surrounding bowel cancer, and find out why screening is so crucial to catch, monitor and treat cancer in those early stages. Why is screening for bowel cancer important? Lisa: Bowel cancer is the second biggest cancer killer in the UK, affecting around 43,000 people per year. Luckily, bowel cancer is treatable and curable if diagnosed early. Thus the need for timely screening meaning investigating those of a certain age without any symptoms. Many colorectal cancers are preventable through regular screening. Screening procedures such as colonoscopies can find and remove precancerous polyps – abnormal growths in the colon or rectum which may turn into cancer. Up to 40 per cent of people eligible for screening may have polyps without knowing it. Screening can and does save lives. Sarah: The Covid pandemic has caused a problem in terms of cancer screening. Overall, by the end of the pandemic, there were 4,000 fewer cancers diagnosed nationally than in the year before and this has led to a scenario of more people presenting with an advanced cancer. Cancers that present at a more advanced stage may not be curable, but if bowel cancers are caught early, over 50 per cent of them are completely curable. Is there an age threshold for screening? Sarah: A campaign has been launched called ‘Never Too Young’ to get across to the public the message that symptoms for bowel cancer should be investigated at any age, with some people contracting bowel cancer in their 20s. There has been a marked increase in the number of people under 50 developing bowel cancer in the last 15 years, so we have lowered the threshold for investigating any of the symptoms associated with bowel cancer to a much younger age. Lisa: NHS England will be reducing the age of bowel screening to 50 and above, but only over the next

four years. If you’re concerned regarding your family history, or any symptoms, you can discuss this with your GP and specifically request a referral. If there are worrying concerns you can also contact OneWelbeck for a consultation. What is your advice to anyone resisting or putting off having a screening? Lisa: There are many commonly held concerns regarding the colonoscopy, which involves a camera examination inside the gastrointestinal tract. At OneWelbeck, we are proud to offer propofol sedation, which is studied, well tolerated and safe. Some patients fear embarrassment, which is understandable, but rest assured that we are an experienced unit of health care staff, nurses and consultants. We are performing these procedures every day. We ensure that we will protect your modesty. Find out more by scanning the QR code, calling 020 3653 2007 or emailing bookings. digestivehealth@ onewelbeck.com.

T

he biggest SS22 collections and trends are beginning to trickle down into the market and now, as we enter spring, is the time to start shopping them. Prepping your footwear for warmer days should be at the forefront of your fashion to-dos. So too should rebooting your shoe style upon your return to the office with something fresh and new, not to mention banishing those fluffy slippers and comfy Crocs under your bed once and for all.

Vibrant clashing colourways are head-totoe this spring and summer, and that’s not exclusive to clothing – a pop of bright colour on your feet is an easy way to achieve impact. Think bright green, canary yellow and orange. “SS22 is set to be bright and bold and we love that, being a pioneer of bright colour ourselves with our signature neon orange branding and zingy leather colours,” says Tracey Neuls of the eponymous fashion house. “Art, sculpture, and the environment are also particular zany inspirations for us. Our Magritte Boots were born of a Rene Magritte painting – The Red Model. The SS22 version of this boot is a hot pink bubblegum colour. It is nice to invest in the story behind each design.” At Dear Frances, the all time bestseller, the Park Boot will be launching soon in new exciting colours, and the Tye Slide is looking to sell out in all colourways.

The ultimate party shoe, the platform, is also back in a big way as seen on London’s catwalks in February, with designers incorporating platforms with stilettoes for the daring fashionista. “Sexy dressing was the most popular trend on this season’s runways and we’re really seeing this translate into footwear, most likely as a tonic to the comfort dressing of the pandemic,” finds Hollie Harding, buying manager at Browns Mayfair. “We’re noticing heel heights rising in skyscraper platform party heels. Our customer is very much looking for that ‘out-out’ shoe, with embellished and expressive party styles very much in demand,” she adds. For those not quite at platform level, a sandal with a big sole, a chunky loafer or mule is a comfortable alternative to platforms. “Haus of Honey – a new brand to Browns – has some really fun bright sandals,” says Harding. Creative director of Dear Frances, Jane Frances, also advises on dressy flats, strappy sandals or mid heels. “As long as they have a chic and pared back finish with elevated details such as high shine and extra-fine straps.”

Fashion collections for SS22 were big on the boot this February, with pointed knee-high boots a fun new take on the seasonal staple, alluding to 90s fashion, a trend that seems to show no signs of abating. Meanwhile, fashion sneakers are still proving popular, marrying style and comfort. “Shoes that can segue from day into night with ease and still make a statement are what we want,” says Tracey Neuls. A survey conducted by online footwear retailer, Sole Bliss, found that 75 per cent of women say they won’t be wearing heels when they return to the

office. In response, the brand launched their own trainer collection in 2021, the Miracle Trainer, with a smart platform and cushioning support. Meanwhile, the popular Veja continues its dominance in the fashion trainer market, bringing pop colours with a new collaboration with the fashion house, Marni. L

MY FIRST LONDON HOME

REBECCA MASCARENHAS

The queen of neighbourhood restaurants recounts her climb to co-owning two Michelin-starred establishments spring-boarding to the position of managing director at Victor Lownes’s Stocks at just 27. It was scary. I didn’t know how to run a club and certainly not a business that was haemorrhaging cash. The staff I inherited were determined for me to fail – I was too young, too inexperienced and the fact that I was a girl did not stand me in good stead. However, I won most of them round and made the club one of the most profitable in London. This propelled me into setting up my own business, Sonny’s. I was looking for my first restaurant and an estate agent took me to Barnes. I had never heard of it but it sounded the right size, had a flat above the restaurant and the rent seemed reasonable. I thought moving to Barnes was like moving to the country.

My family and I moved to the UK from Kenya in 1967. We lived with my grandmother for my early childhood. She was a superb cook and I remember her taking me to the fish market in Mombasa and selecting fresh fish. We had mango, guava and custard apple trees in the garden. Pineapples and papayas were everyday fruit. No concessions were made for “children’s food”. We ate what the grown-ups ate. I moved to London as a student to pursue acting. I went to drama school but left as I was cast in a TV series. I thought I was on my way

to stardom. London in the late 70s and 80s was exciting. I was a party girl and loved going to the clubs and dancing all night. Moving to London made me aware of all the different worldly cuisines. I was introduced to regional Chinese, Malaysian and Thai, as well as Turkish food. Now that I was properly enamoured by food, I started reading about it. Elizabeth David and Jane Grigson wrote so beautifully and made me want to try their recipes. I started as a waitress and climbed the career ladder,

In the mid-80s in London, you had to go into the West End to visit an upmarket restaurant. I didn’t understand why London did not have restaurants de quartier as they did in Paris. I thought London could do with great neighbourhood restaurants. I was massively influenced by the restaurant Alastair Little in Soho. He was one of the best chefs London and I was fascinated by his cooking. I lived above the restaurant for the first six years in Barnes. I loved being above the “shop” and had two children whilst living there. However, we were outgrowing the space.

We found this wonderful house in one of the best streets in Barnes. It was near derelict and initially it was classed as unmortgageable, but I persuaded a building society to lend us the money. We poured every penny we had into the refurbishment. It is a two-minute walk from the restaurant – Church Road – which Phil Howard and I run together. I then moved on to open Kitchen W8 in Kensington followed by Elystan Street in Chelsea. Both Kensington and Chelsea are great neighbourhoods. These are family neighbourhoods. One of my proudest moments was to welcome a family with four generations – from great grandparents down to babes in arms. It was everything I wanted. Gaining a Michelin star was never an ambition of mine. However, I knew that it meant a lot to the chefs and over the years I have come to gain huge respect for the guide. I have been fortunate to work with talented chefs. Their generosity, work ethic, craft and leadership skills have meant that we have retained our Michelin stars since they were awarded. My husband and I still live in Barnes, in the house that we bought in 1992. I love my friends living nearby. I love the long walks on the towpath. I love the fact that my office is a two-minute walk away. We are embarking on an extension so I can’t see us moving. My children have all left home, but our roots will never change. pring is a time of awakenings, of new beginnings and of hope – and we need all this now more than ever. The finest interiors this season are a joyous riot of botanical prints, pastel colours, light and warmth. They make us feel elated and energised, allowing us to imagine for a moment that we are in a country meadow, even if really, we are in the city in the midst of an April shower. “Whatever else is going on in the world, plants are sprouting, flowers are blooming and animals are coming out of hibernation,” says Ed O’Donnell, cofounder of the interior design studio Angel O’Donnell (angelodonnell.com). “So now is a great time to embrace botanical motifs, fresh warm hues and the layering of natural materials.” The Floribunda prints in Liberty Fabrics’ The Modern Collector collection are inspired by the intricate beauty of Victorian botanical illustrations, while the firm’s Tree of Life designs reimagine this ancient arboreal symbol of growth and rebirth. The new Cornubia collection created by the architect and interior designer Ben Pentreath for the fabric and the famed wallpaper brand Morris & Co (morrisandco.sandersondesigngroup.com) is a bright, sunny celebration of the Cornish landscape of Pentreath’s childhood as it bursts into bloom in springtime. 30 The London Magazine

INTERIORS COLOUR POPS

“I began with… tangerine, lemon yellow, primrose, soft pinks, blues and bright apple greens – the colours of spring and summer,” Pentreath says of his design process. “As we translated these new combinations into the historic [Morris & Co] patterns, there was a visible thrill in seeing how new and happy everything looked and felt.” Pastels also speak to the cheerful nature of spring, encapsulated in the beautiful new Loire homeware collection created by Birdie Fortescue (birdiefortescue.co.uk). This is a cheerful, feminine mix of blues, greens and pinks that evoke a simpler, pastoral past and can work well as the seasons begin to change too, Fortescue says. “Offset florals with small-scale geometrics for a modern twist and incorporate lots of airy textures for an easy transition into summer,” she advises. Sunny yellow also works well as the days get longer, says the interior designer Emma Sims Hilditch (simshilditch.com). “Yellow lampshades, cushions, curtains and even upholstery can thread accents of sunshine throughout the room,” she explains. Yellow is used to maximum effect in the newly launched threebedroom apartment in The Bryanston.

With interiors designed by David Collins Studio, whose previous work includes the Connaught Hotel, primrose yellow dining chairs and touches of yellow in the living area and kitchen breakfast bar bring a note of spring to this lavish property overlooking Hyde Park. With extraordinary views across London, it is on the market for £19m through Wetherell (wetherell.co.uk). Indeed, designers say imbuing your interiors with pops of spring can work wonders – allowing the space to feel refreshed without it looking out of place as the seasons change. The pretty scallop hand-painted pendant lights from David Hunt Lighting (davidhuntlighting.co.uk), which launched at London Design Week in March, are a case in point, The London Magazine 33

The designer Joanna Wood swears by freshly picked flowers, and switching up your accessories. “Swap your chocolate brown

And don’t forget about engaging all the senses, says Rosie Ward, creative director at the design firm Ward & Co (wardandco.com), who recommends a home fragrance with fresh floral or citrus undertones. “These are evocative of a spring garden and can be a real mood lifter,” she explains. paint firm Mylands (mylands.com), advises pairing them with deeper shades to add depth. “If, for example, a room is painted in a vibrant green, choose accents in darker greys and off-white to keep the room feeling bright and warm throughout the whole year,” he says. And while spring is the celebration of the new, it doesn’t mean we should forget the old – especially as sustainability has never been more important. Henriette von Stockhausen, the creative director of the interior design brand VSP Interiors (vspinteriors.com), advises combining spring colours and contemporary art with antiques and vintage pieces of furniture. “Often, it is the clever juxtaposition of old and new that creates that certain special energy,” she says. Clara Ewart, head of design at the interiors studio Kitsegrove (kitesgrove.co.uk), says antiques such as a vase, a side table or a light work well as accent pieces. “These little details will make your home feel as if it has organically come together over time,” she explains. “Don’t be afraid to upcycle, either: a lick of paint can transform old wooden furniture, giving it a renewed energy and continuing the life of an item which may otherwise have been long discarded.” L 36 The London Magazine

fter years of campaigning by family lawyers, a new law comes into effect in April 2022 which will benefit couples intending to divorce. Not all people who wish to end their marriage want to do it unpleasantly. On the contrary, many want to get it done quickly and with the least amount of upset. Unfortunately, until now, such couples have had no choice. Unless they have lived separately for a minimum of two years, or their spouse has disappeared, they currently have to blame their spouse for the breakdown of their marriage by demonstrating that their spouse has behaved unreasonably or committed adultery. This ‘blame game’ can be frustrating, especially where the split has been amicable. For years, family lawyers have been campaigning to end the ‘blame game’, as we can see first-hand how damaging this can

be, particularly where couples then have to co-parent and reach a financial settlement. The courts have finally heard our calls. From April 2022, the ‘no fault’ divorce comes into effect, which means that people no longer have to blame their spouse for the break-up of their marriage. Instead, they will merely have to cite “irretrievable breakdown of the marriage” without further detail. No blame divorce will make the divorce process straightforward and allow couples to separate cleanly, reducing conflict and harm to children. It will also mean that people won’t have to stay trapped in unhappy marriages for longer than necessary. Contact Vandana Chitroda today on 020 7299 6947 or email vandana.chitroda@riaabg.com

KITCHENS

Bring the hub of the home to life. Tallulah Rushaya looks at the latest colour trends, features and innovations

itchens are the heart and soul of your home and investing in your kitchen means a long-lasting space that can combine a vast array of design features. Emerging trends for the year include colourful cabinetry, clever storage, and metallics. Even with minimalist designs, a kitchen can be transformed by layering with textures and materials such as wood and marble, statement lighting or vivid appliances. Whether you are in a penthouse or mews house, or have a U or L-shaped kitchen, there are additions that could make it a showstopper.

BURST OF COLOUR

The use of bolder colours to lift the kitchen became a trend last year and is here to stay. Deep jewel tones, varying from richer blues to greens now adorn cabinets, paired with textured surfaces which radiate warmth. “The trend for darker and bold colours in the kitchen is The London Magazine 39

continuing but starting to branch out from just the dark blues to include more greens and even deep reds,” comments Charlotte Campbell, senior kitchen designer at Harvey Jones (harveyjones.com). “The bold feeling is following through in worktop choice and more and more people are choosing heavy veined marble looking worktops as opposed to the more discreet choices we have seen in the past. Texture is also a better understood and used element to kitchen design, to now include honed and satin finishes. As well as reeded glass creating a more layered aesthetic.” Colourful kitchen appliances can be an innovative way to combine design and technology. “Our kitchens should be a place where we feel comfortable to relax and unwind, as well as try new things,” notes John Davies, head of marketing at Smeg UK (smeguk.com). “One way to achieve this is through colour, as it has the power to uplift a room, and put us at ease. Rich colours like maple, dark alluring tones, and earthy hues of green and terracotta are set to be big in 2022. Smeg offers a plethora of these popular colours through its Portofino range, which allows consumers to add a pop of colour to their 40 The London Magazine

kitchen to bring it to life,” says Davies. Luxury appliances, aside from the aesthetic benefits, also present opportunities for more storage and the chance to create an eco-friendlier kitchen, while not compromising on style. “To create the ultimate kitchen, seek first the ultimate kitchen appliances and build the design around the appliances which truly work for your home, family and lifestyle.

High performance, high build-quality, and the utmost control; married with low energy and longevity ensure that not only will your food stay fresher for longer and your meals become more enjoyable, but your appliances will last decades – not just years; reducing food wastage, grocery trips and keeping unwanted materials out of landfill,” advises Ricky Davies, director at Sub-Zero & Wolf (subzero-wolf.co.uk)

L AYOUT & STORAGE

Starting anew, having a focal point can highlight features within your home’s architecture. Interior designer Anouska Tamony (anouskatamony.com) explains: “I tend to find that the best starting point over and above prescriptive rules is a client’s individual lifestyle and personal preferences. For example, placing a range cooker in an old chimney breast can be both a great use of space and an attractive focal point, but doing so might mean structural work which can be off-putting for some, and others may prefer to place their hob on an island so they can face outwards and chat with family and guests whilst cooking.” Using a bespoke kitchen company will enable you

to show creative flair and truly make it personal. “We begin every project focussed on creating the perfect space, ensuring the architecture of the room is correct before we design a single cabinet. This approach allows us to design the furniture in the best way, following the scale and proportions of the room. The final stage is to choose the appropriate materials for the client’s taste,” says Scott Nicholson, managing director of Chamber Furniture (chamber-furniture.co.uk) Depending on the size of the kitchen, custom storage could be the solution to maximise space. “Would you prefer a fully integrated kitchen island, a space where the family can come together, or perhaps floor to ceiling seamless cabinetry, or both? Once the practical layout is decided, then the planning of materials, colour and texture come into play. Custom storage offers a multitude of options for a unique scheme, from handcrafted timber to different types of glass that can conceal, layered with a colour palette that complements the existing interior of the home, or perhaps extends to create a link with the garden,” advises Rebecca Northmore, design manager at HUX (hux-london.co.uk). 42 The London Magazine

Despite the vast array of kitchen styles, one element that has emerged is the concept of ‘broken plan’ a play on open plan, with spaces having clear distinctions, whether using storage or shelves. “When designing an open-plan layout, don’t try to incorporate too many different elements into the space – it will quickly go from a light, airy space to a very closed in, chaotic space. A design that has an abundance of storage space can encourage clutter, making a scheme look disorganised, so the more storage (especially hidden) the better,” says Graeme Smith, head of retail and commercial design at Life Kitchens (life-kitchens.co.uk). “The best open plan kitchens will incorporate some form of divider to break up the space, such as an island. Not only does this zone your space, but it increases your storage space and gives you an place to eat or work."

STATEMENT SINKS

The humble sink can also make a lasting impression, by implementing material and texture which will add character, opulence, and a long-lasting finish. “Copper sinks are beautifully understated and mellow to the eye. They are elegant

but hardwearing and they age beautifully, gathering character with every use,” comments Helen Parker, deVOL’s creative director (devolkitchens.co.uk). Experiment with other materials. Parker explains: “Here at deVOL, we favour white ceramic sinks, as they are most in keeping with the look of our furniture ranges, but in recent years we have begun to enjoy using marble as an alternative

LUXURY KITCHENS to clay. Carrara and Arabescato marble add a certain glamour to a kitchen, the smooth and tactile marble with natural veining is old Italian kitchens, it has a beautiful way of ageing and each is unique.”

MIXED MATERIAL

Whether it is curved tables or flowing lines, one trend being revived is gracefully shaped pieces that echo the modernism or 1970s aesthetic. Along with wood, that brings naturally textured look to cabinetry or flooring with parquet styled shapes. One masterful way to have geometric shapes within the kitchen is through the island, with a fresco-styled worktop. “The show-stopping island top is a work of art by Lara Bohinc of Bohinc Studio. It’s a selection of Italian marbles, inlaid into an aged-brass edge trim, in a selection of shades that elegantly complement the muted colours throughout the rest of the kitchen. For the long runs of worktop, we specified Ambra quartz, for naturallooking veining in a hard-wearing man-made material,” says Charlie Smallbone, founder of Ledbury Studio (ledburystudio.com). Dada’s ‘Intersection’ kitchen from Molteni&C is described by its designer Vincent Van Duysen as “a project that plays with proportions, thickness and a mix of refined materials.” It is an example of how a kitchen can combine rich earthy palettes, while contrasting light and shadow. Intersection is characterised by its expressiveness, that melds together sculptural and linear detail using stone like Breccia Capraia and lacquered surfaces. Wood is another material enjoying a revival, contrasted with quartz, adds depth, especially when mixing patterns as well as material. “There is a definite appreciation of interior schemes inspired by nature – kitchen cabinetry with softer tones, often combined with woods. Also finishes are soft, whether it’s honed marble or matt tile splashbacks, current trends are definitely about using colours and materials to create a harmonising effect,” remarks Leila Touwen, co-founder Pluck Kitchens. Finish with focussed lighting to highlight the areas where cooking takes place, and a standout lighting piece displayed over the dining table to bring an element of showstopping drama. mid mounting concerns at the state of modern foreign-language learning nationwide and GCSE Modern Foreign Language (MFL) entries “declining significantly” in the last 20 years, according to Ofsted, the independent sector has been shining a light on how they engage children in languages. And, unsurprisingly, many schools stress that valuing a language and immersing children in it from an early age is key to engagement and uptake. Kate Bevan, head of Junior School at the Notting Hill & Ealing High School for girls, where pupils learn Mandarin from age four before French Club is offered in year two and German from year four, says “active and varied multisensory learning” and showing children a language’s “usefulness” is fundamental. “We choose Mandarin as the first language our students learn because at their young age they’re

able to pick up the sounds and accent that much more easily,” she explains, “There’s no confusion with English phonics either, which there can be with European languages.” Meanwhile, at the co-ed Dragon School in Oxford, for four to 13 year olds, pupils learn French from year one, and “are taught almost entirely orally” says head of Modern Languages Charlotte Adams. “Quick, energetic activities” are key to engaging younger children in the modern foreign languages classroom, she stresses, adding: “The essential elements of French at the pre-prep are those of fun and confidence. “In the classroom, languages can be a subject where you’re allowed to go a little crazy! We never shy away from using games and competitions to engage our Dragons.” Children can progress to an extra language – Spanish, German or Ancient Greek – from year seven. Edinburgh, which offers French, Spanish, Mandarin and Russian, boys are introduced to two or three languages from ages seven and eight “with starter activities and games” says Dr Clare Flanagan, head of Modern Foreign Languages at the boarding and day school for seven to 18-year olds. She says early exposure to languages meant all pupils, who must take one language to GCSE/National 5, “have experience of at least three languages”. “Previously, Spanish was delivered as the ‘core’ language,” she says, “But we now take a rolling approach to covering different languages over time so that boys who have been at other prep schools aren’t disadvantaged and so that boys can follow their individual interests and make informed choices about language preferences for qualifications.” At Notting Hill & Ealing High, the teaching staff’s approach to immersing children in the sights and sounds of a language continues into the senior school. Children learn French, German and Spanish in a carousel rota, alongside Chinese classes, before choosing two languages to study in years eight and nine, says head of MFL Jana Schindler-Smith. At GCSE, a minimum of one language is required “with a lot of students in fact choosing to take two”. “The study of languages at secondary level is very popular. Our uptake in German, for example, has 54

increased, which goes against the national decline,” Schindler-Smith adds. The school has also recently launched Foreign Languages Evenings, and holds a special Week of Languages event, as well as partnering with other schools in respective countries. Yet there are concerns over the national picture regarding the study of languages. At Merchiston Castle, Dr Flanagan points to societal attitudes as a problem: “The attitude so often voiced in British society: ‘what’s the point of languages, people speak English anyway’ has certainly been evident,” she says. “However, many parents remain enthusiastic about an education enriched by language learning.” Charlotte Adams at The Dragon agrees: “We should be encouraging our children to show respect for others by learning their language. The ‘everyone speaks English anyway’ attitude is an unwelcome one, and something that we shouldn’t encourage.” At Notting Hill & Ealing, Kate Bevan stresses: “We want to support our pupils to be global citizens who can communicate with others, as well as have the opportunities that language learning brings. “It’s a bit hackneyed, but the Nelson Mandela quote is a good one: ‘If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart.’” nhehs.gdst.net; merchiston.co.uk; dragonschool.org

STRONG ARGUMENT A PUPIL TAKES PART IN THE ANNUAL BEALE DEBATE AT CHELTENHAM LADIES COLLEGE

TALKING POINT Inclusive and delivering skills for life, the art of debate has never been more important, writes Charlotte Pearson

n today’s world, everyone has an opinion. And with constant media exposure, presentation and eloquence matter more than ever. Whether a student’s ambitions are to work in politics, law, business or a creative industry, the ability to argue a case clearly and persuasively is a skill for life, which helps to develop confidence and can set one up for just about any career path. School debating teams are quickly becoming as commonplace as sports teams, and provide the same sense of camaraderie and purpose. At Berkhamsted, a family of schools in Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire, debate is woven into school life. “Students at Berkhamsted take part in an array of debating activities, from timetabled lessons and inter-house competitions at every year group to external tournaments, including those run by Oxford and Cambridge Universities and the English Speaking Union. We have found debating to be invaluable in raising awareness of global issues, ensuring heightened confidence and developing both argumentation and empathy,” says a spokesperson for the school. Jack Swanston runs the Debating Society at Repton – a co-educational secondary school in Derby, with overseas campuses in the Middle East, which has taken a lead in the world of school debating. Repton has a popular Debating Society, which holds inter-school debates, and a yearly House Debating competition, 58

with awards given for best novice and overall speaker to encourage participation. Students receive regular feedback from the seasoned debaters who serve as coaches for the event. This year will see the inaugural ‘Repton Debating Festival’, a global initiative in collaboration with the international schools that is set to be a highlight of the school calendar. “Debating is a skill that allows students to develop and refine their analytical ability whilst delivering spontaneously prepared speeches using a range of rhetorical devices,” Swanston explains. He praises the inclusivity of debating, with students of all ages and interests encouraged to take part, even those for whom English is a second language. Swanston feels the importance given to debating has helped to promote “a culture of oracy” at Repton, and he has noticed that those students who have been “regular debaters” have had good success in securing places at Oxford and Cambridge, with Repton debaters taking part in schools competitions hosted by those universities. All-girls Cheltenham Ladies’ College is another secondary school where debating forms a key part of student life, with a popular weekly pupil-led Debating Society, which gives students from all year groups the chance to hone their debating skills and learn from one another. School spokesperson Kieran Hatten says the emphasis at CLC is on showing students the value of public speaking, and how it becomes more important in later life, with regular public speaking

contests within the school, where students prepare a speech on a set topic and then deliver it to their peers; this “introduces pupils to the demands of speaking persuasively, as well as encouraging them to challenge a speaker with their own questions,” explains Hatten. The jewel in the crown of the CLC debating schedule is the Beale Debate, an annual debating contest between sixth form students and alumnae. Downe House in Berkshire, also an all-girls senior school, takes a multi-pronged approach to promoting public speaking. The ‘World Ready Programme’ is designed to prepare students for the wider world, from speaking in school assemblies or touring prospective families during Open Mornings, to Model United Nations political debating, and attending Weekly Academic Lectures, where speakers are invited to discuss various topics and answer students’ questions. Downe House has a sixth form debating society, the Plowden Society, which follows the British

parliamentary style of debating. The Phoenix Society allows students to research and present “on any topic they find fascinating”, in the words of the sixth form head of the society, with events hosted in conjunction with boys’ schools such as Eton, Harrow and Radley. And there is also a lower school public speaking event, for years 7 and 8, with students auditioning and being selected by sixth form mentors on the basis of how well they answer a supplied question, designed to be contentious and thought-provoking. Last year’s was “Is Covid or climate change the greater threat to humanity?” A spokesperson for the school sums up the importance of debate for students: “It teaches them valuable skills in refining arguments, listening to other points of view, challenging with effective arguments, and thinking quickly, logically, and independently under pressure… And, of course, it is enormous fun.” berkhamsted.com; repton.org.uk; cheltladiescollege.org; downhouse.net

vital part of education, revealing the grit and resilience that young people need for their futures. We run a wide range of trips and training, beginning with Exercise TIGER CUB – where pupils learn how to live in a field and take care of themselves and their equipment – moving through to Exercise TIGERS FURY where they learn basic tactics. Our Easter camps offer adventurous training – mountain biking, abseiling, rock climbing – and in summer camp they’re trained by the Army in a trip that includes shooting ranges, paintballing, confidence courses and escape rooms. We have restarted our shooting fixtures and last year qualified for the cadet nationals at Bisley. We have also become a national centre for Target Sprint – air rifle shooting and running, which is a great co-educational sport – and plan to host a national qualifier in the summer. Modern leadership is all about motivation and empowering those around you, so CCF teaches pupils about the softer side of leading people, giving them skills in mentoring and encouraging others at the same time and providing a practical application for leadership skills. The programme changes pupils so much in the years they take part. It gives them a real morale boost and you can see pupils grow in stature as they tackle things they never dreamed they would be able to do. It is difficult to learn leadership without being put in a situation to lead and CCF teaches those practical aspects where pupils are suddenly section commanders, leading teams and solving problems. 64

The London Guide to Schools | Spring/Summer 2022

That’s why universities and employers are keen to see CCF listed on students’ CVs. Ultimately the programme gives young people confidence, and allows those who may not be sporty to believe in themselves. If you’re thinking about it, just give it a go – whether you enjoy adventures, tactics or leadership, CCF has something for everyone. Dan Reed joined Cranleigh in 2013 as teacher of Design Engineering and deputy housemaster, after eight years of service as an Officer in the Army. A keen sportsman, he represented Wales in clay pigeon shooting, is a qualified ski instructor and won numerous Army rugby cups with his regimental side, The Royal Welsh. cranleigh.org (See Directory p72)

The road to SELF-KNOWLEDGE Eve Jardine-Young, headmistress of Cheltenham Ladies College, offers insight into the teenage brain

mongst the joys of teaching are the perennial company of young people and the fellowship of colleagues who feel the same. On days when middle-aged malaise and loss of faith in human nature start to rear their heads, even just one hour reminding yourself why you came into teaching in the first place never fails to provide a restorative tonic to the soul. Considering the many pupils I remember, whose professional lives beyond school are now unprecedently visible to the likes of me through their elective connectedness and social media activity (largely via LinkedIn), I can’t help but feel pride on their behalf, and excitement, in seeing their choices for further education, volunteering, training and employment. Decisions that seem clear and confident with hindsight – what subjects to study, where to apply, how to have a meaningful impact in the world – do not, however, feel quite so obvious at the time when one is in the grip of the angst so common during adolescent years, the years when greater confidence and self-knowledge are often yearned for by those who feel themselves in the grip of bewilderment, insecurity and ‘overwhelm’. One of the most enlightening talks I have ever attended was by Dr Sarah-Jayne Blakemore at the Cheltenham Literature Festival on the subject of her team’s groundbreaking and award-winning research into the development of the brain during adolescence. For enlightening insights into your own teenage years as well as deeper understanding if you are now a parent, I highly recommend her book Inventing Ourselves: The Secret Life of the Teenage Brain. For so many, this is a period of our lives which coincides with the years of formal schooling in which we experience the double-edged blessing of many peers in the same boat, but also many witnesses to one’s own lurching passage towards self-knowledge, self-determination, and finally feeling comfortable in one’s own skin. Dr Blakemore’s work reveals that there are nonsinister, cognitive neuroscience-based explanations for why teenagers wake up and go to sleep later, why they seem compelled to take excessive and irrational risks, why an easy child becomes a challenging adolescent, and why there is often a greater need for

intense friendships. We now know that parts of our brains continue to develop into our 20s and 30s as white matter increases and grey matter decreases. Biological changes in our brains cause changes in how we interact with people, the decisions we make and how we think of ourselves, and I agree with Dr Blakemore that as a teenager, “I would have found it helpful to know that everything I was feeling, the changes, the turbulence, the difficult times, was part of a natural, adaptive biological process that would take a while, but which would stabilise”. Adolescence is a period of vulnerability, but it is also a time of enormous creativity – one that we can, with more committed intention, better acknowledge, nurture and celebrate. It is a time in which we find our way to our adult selves, and what a privilege and opportunity it is to be a part of those years in the lives of others. cheltladies.org

FUTURE READY As the modern world and working practices change, so too must schools adapt teaching to equip pupils for the 21st century

CHARACTER BUILDING LEARNING OUTDOORS ENCOURAGES CREATIVE SKILLS AT BELMONT PREP AND, BELOW, HURST

hat is a skill for life? This is a question that is constantly posed at prep and senior schools to ensure staff are providing pupils with the tools to succeed in a fast-changing world. At Belmont Preparatory School, which feeds into Mill Hill School in north London, there is a holistic and comprehensive Future Skills programme. It includes four 21st century skills: Communication, Collaboration, Creativity and Critical Thinking; as well as three core qualities: Calmness, Compassion and Character. Together, it makes up its 7 Cs for the Future. The world of business has changed and schools must adapt. A new programme which has begun integrating into the curriculum at Belmont is the KidsMBA which enables pupils to develop the aptitude, skills and confidence to set up a real-world business. It teaches students how to collaborate effectively with a team and the school community. It also builds pupils’ innovative and creative skills, both timeless (cooking, first aid and outdoor learning) and contemporary (robotics, videography and sustainability). 70

The London Guide to Schools | Spring/Summer 2022

Leon Roberts, head at Belmont states that one of the most exciting parts of the programme has been the collaboration with the King’s Foundation School in Malawi: “It is wonderful to see live lessons with pupils across two continents sharing their innovative ideas and developing a global outlook.” At Hurstpierpoint College Prep School in West Sussex, the Hurst for Life programme provides opportunities for all pupils in Years 3-6 to enrich their education beyond the curriculum. It focusses on five key areas: wellbeing, living in a wider world, communication and presentation skills, computer skills, and community and voluntary participation. Nick Oakden, the deputy head of Prep School encourages the children to actively engage with current affairs. “Knowing the world around us, with its complexities of politics, cultures and conflicts is important. Through the Votes for Schools programme, pupils engage with current affairs, explore issues and challenge ideas. The children also spend time around campus to develop an appreciation of all natural and living things.” millhill.org.uk; hppc.co.uk

A

t Knightsbridge School we believe in the power of community. Of being connected as a family within our school and being part of the community outside. At KS, as our school is known, we aim to be an unashamedly happy and vibrant school. Our ethos is based on a set of values – known as the KS Code – shared beliefs centred on caring for each other and fulfilling our individual potential every day. Our school has an amazing atmosphere where children can be themselves, where they can discover their many strengths, and challenge their weaknesses, supported by an unbelievably dedicated team of teachers and staff. We are a ‘joined-up’ community at KS – each and every member of staff is connected with every child. We provide an enriching and truly rounded education with more than 70 extra-curricular clubs at the school. A strong spirit of can-do attitude runs throughout, from children, to staff, to the wonderful parents who support us every step of the way.

KS is deeply involved with the local community and has meaningful partnerships with two local primary schools, Ashburnham Community Primary School and Marlborough Primary School, and during lockdown we set up and ran a food bank at a third primary school in Lambeth. KS has also provided much-needed mental health support by establishing Place2Be at Ashburnham Community Primary School. KS pupils are encouraged to think of their own ways to support the local community; the eco-committee created wrapping paper out of waste paper, which was sold at Christmas to raise money for charity. KS staff and parents took part in a sleep-out for the homeless last term, raising more than £50,000 for Restart Lives, a charity based in the church opposite the school. Children learn best when they are happy. We believe much of human happiness comes from being part of a community, so we do whatever we can to create a warm, vibrant community both inside and outside our school.

BROAD HORIZONS SIXTH FORM PUPILS AT WETHERBY SENIOR ARE AT TRACTED TO THE RANGE OF SUBJECTS ON OFFER AT US COLLEGES

AMERICAN DREAM Sixth formers are increasingly looking across the Atlantic for college opportunities. Wetherby Senior in London offers advice to those wishing to apply

he lure of world-leading universities in the USA means more young people are applying to study stateside. However, the US admissions process is more holistic than the UK’s, meaning personal and bespoke advice, along with tailored guidance, is needed to support ambitions to study across the pond. Since opening in Marylebone in 2017, Wetherby Senior School’s Sixth Form has received over 30 offers for its sixth formers to study in the USA. These include Georgetown University, UCSD, University of Chicago, UCLA and a D1 Football Scholarship to the University of Akron. At the time of going to print, the School’s 2022 applicants had already received early decision offers from NYU, UPenn, Babson, Northeastern and Notre Dame.

The attraction of studying in the USA is clear, as Dena Deedat, head of sixth form, explains: “Studying abroad is always very appealing to our sixth formers, providing an opportunity to enjoy a different culture and way of life first-hand. “In addition, the American education system typically offers the opportunity to explore a wider range of subjects at undergraduate level before you declare your major. This can be particularly attractive to our students who enjoy studying a broader range of topics before specialising.” Current Year 13, Faris, has an offer to study Global Liberal Studies at New York University. “I have always been excited by the prospect of pushing boundaries and experiencing new things, so applying to the US was a great option for me. I chose Global Liberal Studies because it is a chance to develop my passions The London Guide to Schools | Spring/Summer 2022

TOP TIPS ON APPLYING TO STUDY IN THE USA

Wetherby Senior School’s US advisor Martine Gagnon • Start early! Aside from strong academics, US colleges will be looking for applicants with great extracurricular profiles and insightful personal essays. There are over 4,500 higher education institutions in the US, so it’s also a good idea to start researching early. • Ten is the magic number! I recommend casting a wide net and applying to a range of institutions with a mix of aspirational, target, and safety choices. • Sixth formers should tailor their college applications to focus on fit for an increased chance of success. • Best behaviour! Finally, don’t forget to be nice to your sixth form teachers; they’ll be writing your recommendation letters.

in English and History, as well as explore what NYU has to offer through the ability to select a minor in a different course,” he says. The process of applying to US universities differs to the UK’s UCAS system, meaning Wetherby Senior is supporting and encouraging the ambitions of its sixth formers with two US university advisors at the School’s central London site. These external experts provide one-to-one guidance to sixth formers on the application process and offer weekly group sessions on preparing application essays. Wetherby Senior’s current year 11 started weekly sessions following the February half-term, as the school believes early preparation is essential for the best applications. Current year 13, Robert, has been accepted to University of Notre Dame in Indiana to read Environmental Sciences and Sociology. “During our weekly sessions on applying to the States, our US university advisor explained how we should approach writing our common application essay and our supplemental essays for each university,” he says. “I was also able to send this advisor my supplemental essays, before I submitted, and get further feedback.” As well as the support of US university advisors, Wetherby Senior’s head of sixth form writes all counsellor references, in collaboration with the boys’ form tutors who they see every day as part of the excellent pastoral provision at the school. 76

The London Guide to Schools | Spring/Summer 2022

She notes, “Writing counsellor references is really enjoyable because it gives me the chance to show off the achievements of each boy in a very personal way. Throughout their time in sixth form, I look out for moments of kindness, responsibility and leadership, as well as academic success.” Wetherby Senior expects numbers of applications to the US to continue to rise, especially when current sixth formers hear from former peers now stateside. Wetherby Senior alumnus, Bennett, joined University of Notre Dame in 2020, and says: “Words couldn’t explain my excitement before starting at Notre Dame and college life hasn’t disappointed. Every day I feel so grateful to be here, it’s home.” Wetherby Senior’s headmaster, Joe Silvester, says: “Applying to study in the USA can be incredibly complex, even before you consider that this process takes place alongside A Levels, co-curricular activities, and submission of a UCAS application. I’m very proud that our sixth form team and US advisers can offer specialist advice and guidance, with this support reflected in the incredible number of offers received. I’m delighted that so many of our sixth formers look beyond the UK for higher education opportunities. Adding a global perspective to your degree, through study abroad, offers immeasurable future rewards and a fantastic experience of another country.” L wetherbysenior.co.uk. See Directory p66

he Village Prep School believes that every child should achieve their full potential through exceptional teaching tailored to individual needs. The school offers 2½ to 11-year-old girls meaningful and exciting learning experiences that go well beyond the curriculum, and take advantage of its outdoor space right in the heart of Belsize Park. Village Prep girls achieve fantastic results, and 2021 saw its best-ever Year Six results, with 16 scholarships to an impressive range of leading London day schools. The new head Morven MacDonald, who joined the school in September after seven years at Garden House in Chelsea, would be delighted to welcome you to the school and give you a tour of its Edwardian building and the outdoor space. This includes a fullsized floodlit netball court, a large grassed area, an adventure playground, an outdoor classroom and fruit

trees and herb gardens. A well-equipped theatre is used for an array of indoor sports, as well as the girls’ fantastic theatrical productions. Sport is an important part of life at The Village Prep, and as a partner school of Saracens Rugby Club and associate school of Saracens Mavericks Netball Club, the girls have the opportunity to see topclass sport and gain coaching tips from experienced professionals. As part of the Chatsworth Schools group, The Village Prep also benefits from invaluable expertise by being part of a family of schools. Homework isn’t regularly set to complete at home. Instead, the girls in KS2 are given independent study homework slots during the school day. Teaching staff believe this helps pupils approach independent learning tasks effectively. They leave school at 4.30pm having completed their homework and attended a club and therefore, home time is for family, reading and play!

ICONIC STR EETS OF

PUTNEY

With an enviable riverside location and offering substantial family houses with large gardens, Putney attracts Londoners in search of space, writes Ruth Bloomfield

Opposite page from top: Putney Bridge at dusk; the Boat Race between Oxford and Cambridge rowing teams, has taken place every year since 1829, and starts downstream of Putney Bridge

F

or almost 200 years, Oxbridge rivals have tested their mettle on the water with the annual Boat Race. The action starts just below Putney Bridge, and in early April, thousands of supporters will gather in this usually peaceful south west London stronghold to cheer on their crew from one of Putney’s fine riverfront pubs. To many, leafy Putney is Fulham’s sensible sister: less frenetic and fashionable, but very comfortable, and brilliant for families. But things were very different until the Victorian era. The birthplace of Thomas Cromwell, antihero of Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall trilogy, was a small village which became a popular spot for city-fatigued Londoners to take a day trip, whiling away their time playing bowls,

84 The London Magazine

watching horse racing, or hunting. Queen Elizabeth I visited regularly. After the arrival of the railways Putney evolved into what it is today: an affluent suburb of substantial but not showy houses, popular with the professional classes.

AT FIRST GL ANCE

Alight at Putney’s redbrick railway station and you will almost certainly be confronted by the sight of four lanes of stationary traffic – congestion is the bane of Putney residents’ lives. The High Street, which leads down to Putney Bridge, is lined by shops, more useful than exciting, but the big sky views from the bridge are spectacular and worth the walk. The side streets are filled with neat Victorian and Edwardian terraces –

EATING OUT

SW15 is not fine dining country, but what it does very well is atmospheric neighbourhood cafés and bars. Kickstart your day with a speciality brew at Ground Coffee Society, brunch on brioche French toast at homesw15 (below) or sip Swedish tea while picking up stylish homewares and furniture from young Nordic brands and designers at Blåbär concept store. When it’s time for dinner, take your pick from Gazette, an authentic French restaurant on Upper Richmond Road, Sicilian local, Soffice (above), MaGoa, a Putney institution serving home-style Goan cuisine, or unfussy pub food and Sunday roasts in the airy dining room at the Duke’s Head (a great spot from which to view the annual Boat Race).

the sheer volume of timber shutters and front doors painted in 50 shades of Farrow & Ball are a nod to local demographics. Closer to Putney Heath and Common are streets of rangy Victorian villas with massive, by London standards, gardens. Buyers converge on Putney from more expensive postcodes on the other side of the river. Sophie Sharman, for Hamptons estate agents, says many of her younger buyers have been renting in Fulham but “can’t quite afford to buy there”, while others have been born and brought up in the area and want a first home close to the folks. Older buyers are following a similar path, moving out from Fulham, Clapham, or sometimes Chelsea or Belgravia. “For them Putney represents green space and fantastic schools,” says Sharman.

WHY ICONIC?

Putney Bridge is the second oldest in the capital (beaten only by Richmond Bridge). It is thought that prime minister Robert Walpole agreed to pay for the construction of a timber bridge after struggling to cross the river by ferry because the ferryman was indisposed, drinking in The Swan Inn. The bridge was built in 1729. In 1795, the early feminist Mary Wollstonecraft, suffering from a bad case of a broken heart, flung herself off the bridge in a suicide attempt. She was fished out and revived by a passing boatman. She went on to marry the philosopher William Godwin and their daughter, Mary Shelley, became a novelist and wrote Frankenstein. Today’s residents include, as well as City workers and recent graduates The London Magazine 85

newly arrived in London, a sprinkling of non-showy celebrities. Simon and Yasmin le Bon have a family home here, as does John Deacon, the Queen bass player, and comedian Jack Whitehall.

In the state sector Saint Cecilia’s Church of England School and the Ark Putney Academy both hold “good” Ofsted reports. Although the High Street is heavy on chains – Oliver Bonas, L’Occitane, Waitrose – there are some independent gems in Putney. Pick up a pot plant at Grow, on Upper Richmond Road, shop the latest Korean beauty products at Aigoo, browse the rails at Adornments, and choose gifts at Huttons or Farrago. A stroll along the river, stopping off at one of the waterfront pubs, is a particular delight of Putney living, and the whole area really comes alive on Boat Race weekend in April. The 400-or-so acres of Putney Heath offers ample wide open space. There is an Odeon Cinema on the high street, or you could take in a show at the Putney Arts Theatre. For something more active, along with all the regular gyms and sports clubs, you could learn to row at the Hurlingham Yacht Club.

PHOTOGRAPHS: ALAMY;ISTOCK;AWL

A great range of state and private options make Putney popular with parents. Brandlehow Primary School, St Mary’s C of E Primary School, and Our Lady of Victories Catholic Primary School are all rated “outstanding” by Ofsted. The very smart Hurlingham School takes students from two to 11-years-old and many pupils go on to Ibstock Place in Roehampton or Emanuel School in Battersea. But it is Putney High School (girls) which is probably the most sought after independent school in SW15 – it regularly scores amongst the top performing schools in the UK, although it is highly selective.

Property varies, from chunky Victorian villas with spacious gardens to modern penthouses with views of the Thames. Key streets include Gwendolen and St Simon’s Avenues, close to Putney’s High Street and station. “For West Putney they have big gardens, and they are very attractive late Victorian and early Edwardian villas,” says Alex Howard Baker, joint head of Savills’ Putney office. He recently sold an unmodernised house on Gwendolen Avenue for £4.7m (£1,000 per sq ft). Fully modernised, with a basement extension, houses on these streets can sell for around £1,500 per sq ft. On Putney Embankment buyers must pay up to £1,750 per sq ft for a home with

a front row view of the Boat Race. On Deodar Gardens, gardens run down to the river allowing owners to keep a boat. Buyers looking for outdoor space should explore Lower Common South, where houses overlook Putney Common. Detached, Victorian gothic houses sell for £1,250-£1,500 per sq ft. There is also Heathview Gardens, part of a tiny enclave of leafy streets right in the middle of Putney Heath where gardens measure up to around an impressive third of an acre. Sophie Sharman at Hamptons estimates that Putney prices increased by 5 per cent in 2021. The rise was mainly supported by houses, with many buyers vying for more space and pushing their budgets to secure a house as their first purchase. L

Poised for a SCHOOL PLACE Parents seeking the best performing schools in London must do their homework when it comes to property buying, writes Zoe Dare Hall

A

two-bedroom flat recently came on the market on the Fulham Road. It had no outdoor space, sat directly above a pub – and a couple with young children snapped it up, desperate to get their daughter into the Catholic, non-feeing paying Oratory primary school a short walk away. “We had several far more suitable properties for them, but this one won them over as it was well within the catchment zone,” says James Hyman, head of residential at Cluttons. With London families prepared to pay house price premiums of up to 121 per cent over the borough average to live within reach of a top private school, according to a recent survey, parents are learning the art of future-proofing. Some are jumping on sought-after preps that are opening secondary schools, such as Thomas’s Battersea this September,

bringing valuable peace of mind that their child is sorted until they are 18. Such forward-thinking isn’t just over private schools. Charles Kennard at Savills Kensington mentions newly-wed couples with an eye on primary and secondary options for their yet-to-be-conceived children. “We recently sold a property on Kensington Place to a couple so their young children could go to Fox Primary and then onto Holland Park secondary. This is a prime example of buyers looking to make long-term moves so their children can attend some of West London’s highly sought-after state schools,” says Kennard. Some buyers at 80 Holland Park – where remaining properties start at £6m – are also opting to spend millions for a house and avoid school fees. on the agenda for some families who have bought in the development, along with its study area for private tutoring and “an Olympic-level gym”. And given the shortage of decent family houses on the sales market, parents are increasingly looking at paying high rents instead. Sophie Alexander, senior lettings negotiator for Knight Frank in Kensington, notes: “We have seen clients dramatically increase their rental budgets – from £2,000 to £7,000 a week in one case – in order to be within close proximity of local schools, particularly Holland Park School.” Long-term thinking is often vital, too, to stand a chance of securing a place at schools “centred around religion,” points out Polly Wattridge at Carter Jonas in Holland Park. “Such schools often require the families to have lived in the catchment and to have been part of the church community for a long time. We see clients

Westminster and St Paul’s are now in a league of their own, while Eton and Winchester would probably struggle to keep up with second-tier London schools such as Dulwich College, King’s College Wimbledon and City of London.” Overseas buyers like to be close to London’s European and American schools such as La Petite Ecole Française in Ladbroke Grove, says Wattridge, while Mark Pollack at Aston Chase has just dealt with three competing buyers for a £10m house on Springfield Road in St John’s

Wood. “American buyers like to be within walking distance of the American School. And this was a lateral house, which is rare,” says Pollack, who has a five-bed house on the same road for £5.975m. Competition for places is Londonwide. In Hackney’s Victoria Park Village, Savills’ James Marshall has seen two

We see clients buying in the catchment area, even if their children are less than one year old families paying 110 per cent of the asking price, “after a series of competitive bids,” to secure houses near Lauriston, a state primary school. In Brook Green, Savills’ head of sales Dominic Barry is seeing “huge demand” for family homes within the

catchment of St Stephen’s Primary School. And in Kingston, families are paying £50,000 over the asking price just to be in the right catchment, says Conor Hayes at Dexters, who is marketing a detached three-bed Edwardian house for £1.25m close to Outstanding-rated Kingston Academy. “There’s also Tiffin Girls, which is a top grammar,” Hayes adds. Outside London, however, Savills’ research shows that house prices near several sought-after grammars are lower than the average within 5km. This is because grammars in Buckinghamshire (Aylesbury and High Wycombe) and Kent (Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells) are often located in less-desirable areas to live, and tend not to have fixed catchment areas. It’s a high-risk strategy, though, to buy near a school with a highly competitive entrance exam, warns Frances Clacy, Savills’ research analyst. “Parents would be well advised to locate themselves where there is a range of options.” L The London Magazine 89

A

day trip is one of my favourite things. But equally delightful is the London MDT (micro day trip) that takes up a morning or an afternoon - or just half-an-hour between meetings – but can provide architectural or cultural thrills that rival those of a fullblown outing. I am planning a series of MDTs this month to discover new treats, revisit familiar haunts and observe what is being built where and the progress of regeneration. There is no reason why an MDT should not also have a professional focus. After all, checking out the established property hotspots and those poised for greatness is in my line of duty. Viewing a building or location that is being refurbished also provides a focus on the future that should provide some diversion against the background of war in Ukraine and economic difficulties. These are just five of my best-loved itineraries. Wave hello if you see me packing a lot of fun into a short break. My Shoreditch MDT starts at the Sunday flower market in Columbia Road, E2, where the boho affluent tribe gather to enjoy the stallholders’ banter, buy olive trees and breakfast on bagels. I then head south for Club Row and Redchurch Street to ogle designer shops like Bottega Veneta while reflecting that, at the end of the 19th century, this hip neighbourhood was one of Europe’s worst slums. Today it is a piedà-terre destination for City executives. I finish with a stroll past the elegant early 18th century townhouses of Spitalfields, once the homes of Huguenot weavers and now likely to change hands at £2.8 million 90 The London Magazine

At the end of the 19th century this hip neighbourhood was one of Europe’s worst slums if they become available. My Bloomsbury MDT starts, and sometimes finishes, with the British Museum. I love this vast building for its neoclassical swagger, but also the opportunity to linger for hours, or just 15 minutes, to enjoy a treasure that you may revisit at leisure. If there is time to tour Bloomsbury squares, I sit for a while in the glorious gardens of Queen’s Square, or in Red Lion Square which is less scenic but more historical. It was, briefly, the last resting place of Oliver Cromwell. My Bayswater MDT often takes me to

LONDON BLOOMS The bustling Sunday flower market at Columbia Road, E2, is a great outing

Queensway, named for Queen Victoria when the neighbourhood was coming up in the world. Such a process is again underway. Whiteley’s, the Edwardian department store at the northern end, is being made into a hotel and apartments by Finchatton. At Queensway’s southern edge stands Park Modern, the Fenton Whelan apartment scheme with views over Hyde Park. The Bryanston, another apartment scheme about ten minutes’ walk away, is another key part of Bayswater’s bid to join the elite. Bryanston was the country seat of Sir William Portman, the 18th century entrepreneur responsible for turning this swathe of London from meadows into smart addresses. In Chelsea, my outing begins with a coffee on Pavilion Road, London’s longest mews which has been transformed into an enclave of cafés and restaurants, thanks to the efforts of the Cadogan Estate. I then head north down Sloane Street, enjoying the handsome side streets and gardens in this location which was also farmland until another 18th century man with big ideas – Henry Holland – laid out plans for a new town. If you are in Piccadilly, take some time to admire the windows at Fortnum & Mason then cross Regent Street and continue along Jermyn Street (once home to Sir Isaac Newton) until the turning into St James’s Market. This features some of the most glamorous offices and restaurants in the West End, where the competition in these sectors is considerable. The creativity on display will make you proud to be a Londoner – which is what it’s all about really. L
