Winston Churchill, then in the War Office, wrote to thank the school – the letter can still be seen today in the History Department.
A lot of former pupils served in the First World War (around 300-400), 61 died. To remember those who died, in September 1920 the memorial sundial, which can still be seen today, was erected by the old pupils association, The Old Waconians. A Memorial Tablet was also made – today it is in the entrance hall of the Main Building.
Between 1915 – 1927 at least 55 pupils came to the School because their fathers had died in the War. 18
