A Kitchen Trades French Country for Coastal Chic

WHERE: West Ashley THE NUTS & BOLTS: The original kitchen in this West

Before

Ashley home was closed off from the family room and everything was squeezed tightly into the existing space. To open up the area, Advanced Kitchen Designs of Charleston removed the wall between the kitchen and the family room, as well as removed the door leading to the outside deck and replaced it with a window. They then framed in a 4-foot section of wall where the double ovens and small pantry used to be in order to create a large storage pantry. The refrigerator and sink moved to the new wall of cabinets, with the sink being placed under the new window. The cooktop—which was in the island—was moved to the sink's former space. An English Ivy painted island with bar seating, along with a matching range hood, gives the space a cohesive look. Advanced Kitchen Designs chose Smithport cabinetry for the remodel, as the line is fully custom but priced below most semi-custom lines.

Country Clutter Makes Way for a Modern Marvel

WHERE: Charleston THE NUTS & BOLTS: The homeowners of this Charleston home fashioned their kitchen after a country store by decorating it with the many items they had collected over the years. After retiring, they realized it was time to upgrade to a sleek, contemporary kitchen that would be easier to keep clean—therefore allowing them more time to travel and do the things they truly enjoy. As the house was an early 80's contemporary, interior designer Sandra Gaylord of Gaylord Design, LLC continued that look when extending the sink wall and adding windows reflective of the rest of the house. To allow the homeowner to look out onto the landscape, Sandra opened up an area to the right of the refrigerator that offered a view out of the hall windows. Smooth cabinet doors avoid dust build-up and complement the low-maintenance countertops.
