We honor the courage and commitment that guided our students to this wonderful day. We mark the end of one important journey and the beginning of many more.
To our graduates, your achievement is a powerful affirmation of your resilience, discipline, and dedication to learning about the world around you. Like the friends and family members gathered with us today, the Central family is so proud of you and all that you have accomplished.
As many of you know, at Central we believe in the power of education to transform lives. This belief has guided you through every exam and deadline, every late-night study session, and every moment of uncertainty. As you move forward, remember the strength of character you have cultivated here, and carry it with you as you embark on your next great adventure.
I urge you to remember that your degree is more than a credential. Dr. Mohammed K. Yusuf is the vice president of North America Cloud and Infrastructure at Oracle, a multinational cloud technology company. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Management Information Systems from Central Connecticut State University, where Yusuf says he gained expertise in data center technologies and comprehensive strategy development. Yusuf went on to earn a Master of Business Administration in Management from Alliance University and a Doctor of Philosophy from Walden University.
Yusuf brought more than 10 years of experience to Oracle, after serving as general manager of The ProServ Group at Converge Technology Solutions Corp. and director of IT Services & Operations at Vicom Computer Services, Inc.
Yusuf joined the team at Oracle as a senior manager in 2020. With a solid foundation in engineering and a strong grasp of multi-cloud platforms, data centers, and the business values of artificial intelligence, Yusuf now leads teams that address the scope of technological issues that affect clients in the hospitality, professional services, legal, and healthcare industries. Yusuf says his talent lies in inspiring diverse teams to achieve exceptional outcomes while deeply engaging customers. He says diversity, equity, and inclusion are critical to a team’s success.

Every spring, the university and the CSCU system recognize outstanding seniors for their academic performance and community service with the annual Barnard Scholars and President’s Citation awards.

The CSCU Foundation recognizes 12 seniors from Connecticut’s four state universities with the Barnard Award. The award is named for Henry Barnard, who was Connecticut’s first superintendent of schools and served as principal of what later became Central Connecticut State University.
To be considered for the award, a student must have a minimum 3.7 GPA and a record of significant community service. The students are nominated by their respective universities and presidents and must submit a personal essay and other materials to be considered for the award.
President’s Citation awards are presented to seniors nominated by faculty and staff. The award recognizes accomplishments and contributions that benefit the university. Consideration is given for students who have demonstrated their commitment not only to their academics but also to leadership, student success, or community engagement activities.
Departmental Honors are awarded annually to undergraduate students with outstanding academic achievements who have also participated significantly in the life of the University.
CAROL A. AMMON COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS & SOCIAL SCIENCES
Seventeen years ago, a young Tyrek Marquez was at Hartford’s West Indian Day Parade when he was shot in the head by a stray bullet. The incident was captured at the time and featured in “The Sweetest Land,” a documentary film by Professor Jeff Teitler, a faculty member in the Central Communication Department. The years that followed weren’t easy, yet as fate will have it, Tyrek enrolled as an Exploratory student at Central and eventually changed his major to Strategic Communication. Tyrek agrees that pursuing the degree has been challenging for him and a lot of work, but his persistence paid off. He now graduates with his BA degree. With guidance from his professors about his interests and future job prospects, he recently landed a position helping curb youth violence in Hartford. Remarkably, it is with the hospital in Hartford that saved his life 17 years ago. Now, degree in hand, Tyrek will work in the Emergency Room meeting with victims of violence and caring for families in need. His education at Central helped to transform his life.
During his tenure at Central, Josh LaRoche distinguished himself both academically and professionally. He maintained a strong academic record, earning frequent recognition on the Dean’s List. Josh found that being a peer tutor for other finance students was his way to give back his love of learning. Complementing his studies, Josh sat for the CFA L1 exam and participated in the 2024-2025 CFA Research Challenge. Josh gained practical experience as a part-time merchandiser at PepsiCo in Bristol, Connecticut. In this role, he was responsible for asset management and merchandising across multiple stores, demonstrating his ability to apply classroom knowledge to real-world business operations.
Lisa McMahon graduates with her EdD in Educational Leadership, Higher Education Administration, after three years of dedicated study. A licensed physical therapist, she holds a Master of Science in Physical Therapy from Springfield College (2001) and is NASM-CPT certified.
Lisa has served as a faculty member at Central for over eight years, beginning as an adjunct in Exercise Science before advancing to assistant professor in the Physical Education and Human Performance Department. Since its opening in January 2024, she has also served as the Central Community Health Education Clinic coordinator, playing a pivotal role in the clinic’s establishment and growth. Under her direction, the clinic provides free, accessible health services to the community while enriching the academic experiences of students in the College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences and beyond. Her leadership and dedication continue to leave a lasting impact on both students and the community.
Nathalie Sanchez has made an exceptionally positive impact on Central and off-campus communities. Known for being highly intelligent, dynamic, and compassionate, Nathalie consistently demonstrates professionalism and a commitment to social and economic justice and human rights. Academically, she has made the Dean’s List on several occasions.
Nathalie is a resident assistant, president of the Social Work Club, and member of Phi Alpha and Phi Theta Kappa honor societies. She completes a professional 400-hour social work internship with Wheeler Clinic in New Britain this spring. Nathalie also gained significant volunteer experience in Central student support services, the Ruthe Boyea Women’s Center, and YWCA of New Britain as a Sexual Assault Crisis Counselor & Advocate. She was active in the Central Latina Leadership and Development Group.
Nathalie earned an Associate of Arts from Tunxis Community College, where she was a member of Phi Theta Kappa, Behavioral Intervention JED Team, Community Outreach Club, Human Services Club, and the SOARing Together Mentoring Network.
Sam distinguished himself through outstanding academic performance and deep engagement with both the campus and professional community. A University Honors Program member and consistent Dean’s List honoree, he applied his knowledge in a series of progressively challenging and relevant engineering internships. Sam’s work with Doane Engineering, GHD Inc., Garg Consulting Services, and the I-91/I-691/Route 15 Interchange project contributed meaningfully to public infrastructure and environmental efforts across Connecticut.
What makes Sam truly stand out is his character and commitment to service. An Eagle Scout and former National Honor Society member, he organized bike drives for children in need, participated in environmental clean-ups, and contributed to non-profits like Bikes for Kids. Even while managing a demanding academic load and part-time work, Sam continued to serve as a mentor and leader in Central’s chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers, acting as treasurer and peer mentor for underclassmen.
GRADUATE STUDIES AT CENTRAL
As a participant in the Accelerate Central program, Ardyn earned her Bachelor of Arts in Criminology in spring 2024 and will earn her Master of Science in Criminal Justice this spring. Since beginning her academic career in the Fall of 2020, Ardyn maintained a 4.0 GPA across all undergraduate and graduate coursework. She earned the President’s List recognition every semester for five years. As part of the Department of Criminology & Criminal Justice’s undergraduate internship program, she completed 120 hours with the Middletown Police Department in the summer of 2023. She also is a member of the Criminal Justice Club and Alpha Phi Sigma honor society. She has been researching mediating factors and the impact of prejudice during mass shooting events for her master’s thesis. Upon graduation, Ardyn aspires to further her career as an analyst with a federal law enforcement agency.

Central Connecticut State University is the largest university within the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities system and the state’s first public institution of higher education. In 2024, Central celebrated its 175th anniversary—a legacy of excellence that guides the university’s future.
Founded in 1849 to train teachers for the “common schools,” the New Britain Normal School graduated its first class in 1850. Its first principal, Henry Barnard, later became the first United States Commissioner of Education.
Initially located in downtown New Britain, the school moved in 1922 to its present campus. In 1933, the Normal School became Teachers College of Connecticut and was authorized to grant four-year baccalaureate degrees. In 1959, it became Central Connecticut State College; in 1983, it was elevated to university status.
As a comprehensive public university, Central is comprised of three schools — Business, Education, and Engineering, Science & Technology — two colleges — Health and Rehabilitation Sciences and the Carol A. Ammon College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences — and Graduate Studies at Central.
Central offers more than 100 undergraduate majors in 80 fields of study and 75 full- and part-time graduate programs, along with additional specializations that reflect high academic standards for advanced study and address the state’s workforce needs.
More than 85 percent of Central’s graduates remain in Connecticut within three to five years of graduation. As such, the university is a vital pipeline for an array of professions in the public, private, and non-profit sectors, including engineering, social services, health care, law enforcement, education, business, and industry, among others. The integration of liberal arts into the university’s professional programs serves as the foundation for preparing a flexible, engaged, and adaptable workforce.
In January 2017, Dr. Zulma R. Toro began her tenure as the 13th president of Central. Her presidency marks two milestones for Central: She is the university’s first female president, as well as its first Hispanic chief executive.

Many of the accessories and symbols that add color and drama to academic ceremonies date back to the Middle Ages when universities dominated European intellectual life.
University Mace
The mace was carved from mahogany. Its top, shaped like an acanthus plant found in Corinthian architecture, surmounts a deep-fluted staff. Each of the four gold-leafed medallions inlaid into the top are inscribed with a symbol: a globe to signify the university’s international initiatives; a book of knowledge; a group of students emblematic of leadership and diversity; and the state seal.
University Staff
Also crafted of mahogany and similar in design to the mace, the staff is carried as another symbol of authority. A gold-leafed ball rests atop the staff, to which are attached tassels in the blue-and-white school colors.
Both the mace and staff were designed and carved by the late Peter J. Vernesoni, emeritus professor of Technology Education. Dr. Vernesoni earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Central.
University Medallion
The medallion represents the president’s leadership and continuity of the Office of the President. Each academic school is represented in the medallion.
Banners
The university banners represent each academic school.
Academic Attire
The tradition of academic garb came to America by way of British universities. The bachelor’s gown, with its wide sleeves, is worn closed. The master’s gown, which may be worn open, is distinguished by its long, pointed sleeves.
Doctoral gowns also may be worn open. Its sleeves are long and wide, and three velvet chevrons adorn each sleeve; two matching velvet panels accent the front of the gown.
Academic hoods, made of material like that used in the gown, are lined with silk in the official colors of the institution conferring the degree. The particular length, shape, and color of the hood also signify the degree.
Academic Cap
The academic cap, most often made in the Oxford mortarboard style, is constructed of black broadcloth, although the doctor’s cap may be velvet.
Tassels vary in length, depending upon the degree; the doctor’s tassel is usually gold. It has become customary in most schools to leave the tassel draped over the left temple at all times.
Academic Hood
Holders of Central master’s degrees and sixth-year certificates wear a blue-and-white satin hood trimmed in the color representing their degree. Additionally, students earning the sixth-year certificate are presented with a white cord.

Designations
Latin graduation honors for the baccalaureate degree recognize high academic achievement as demonstrated by a minimum of 45 credits completed in residence at Central the following cumulative gradepoint averages:
• Cum laude (honors): 3.50-3.69
• Magna cum laude (high honors): 3.70-3.89
• Summa cum laude (highest honors): 3.90-4.00
The Dean’s Distinction award recognizes students who have achieved a grade-point average of at least 3.50 with less than 45 credits completed in residence at Central
Candidates for all graduation honors are recognized at the commencement ceremony with gold cords.
