How did you sta rt your business? Ten years ago, Jared Watkins and Craig Woods, the founders of Roadside Services and Solutions (RSS) had nothing except a lot of drive, ambition and a yearning to be the best in the business and build a successful company. Jared and Craig rented a factory and plugged in a fax machine and had no one to fax. They worked tirelessly with street smarts and significant previous experience to create the successful business it is today, to meet the needs of state road authorities, local governments, civil construction and mining companies, facility management services, car park operators and both small and large businesses and companies. The

company’s motto is: Our service is your solution.

RSS is the authorised distributor of the TL-2 crash rated to 60kph Energy Absorbing Bollards (EABs), Oxford Plastic Systems products and the full range of Barrier Group vehicle and parking products. After 10 years of growing its product and service supply in South Australia, RSS has now expanded its core business in South Australia to include civil works and facility maintenance to cover services such as concreting, paving, bitumen patching, retaining wall construction, fencing, minor earthworks and street scaping.

Completed project/products or services you have worked/or have that you are most proud of? Protection for Rundle Mall Precinct Supply and installation of nearly 70 standard, hydraulically retractable, removable and lockable EABs throughout the city’s main shopping complex. With an increasing number of terror attacks throughout the world in early 2017, the City of Adelaide was the first council in Australia to introduce preventative measures to safeguard its citizens from deliberate and hostile attacks using a motor vehicle. EABs are designed to arrest a 1600kg errant motor vehicle travelling at 60kph, protecting the lives of pedestrians from the impact and at the same time preserving the life of the driver of the errant motor vehicle. They can also be found throughout the Adelaide metropolitan area protecting outdoor diners, construction work zones and critical assets and infrastructure. T2T Alliance – North-South Corridor – Torrens Road to Torrens River Project As the successful tenderer for the supply and installation of all permanent signage on this stage of the South Road upgrade, we were pleased to assist T2T Alliance partners CPB and York in providing and erecting all regulatory and guide signs (TES) towards the closing stages of the project. Because a sign is a ‘Critical Safety Device’, it is important it provides guaranteed performance, durability and compliance with all Australian and state road authority standards. As a 3M certified signs manufacturer, signs manufactured by RSS are protected by a 12-year full replacement warranty. A longer warranty not only protects the government’s investment in signs infrastructure, it provides the best life cycle value, which in effect keeps roads safer for longer.

Spotless FMS – Tactile Paving – Adelaide State Library As a ‘pre-qualified’ contractor to Spotless, we are often called to various facilities to either provide products or services within the scope of our core business capacity and proven capabilities. Tasks ranging from the menial to significant projects like removing unstable plastic adhering to the red brick pavement steps leading to the main entrance of the State Library building, cutting and removing perimeter bricks from this area and the re-bedding of more permanent concrete tactile pavers in that space, to protect library patrons and the general public from stairway trip and slip hazards, especially on rainy days. The same RSS skilled crew of four people, have now moved next door to the Immigration Museum to lift and relay approximately 400 square metres of paving affected by tree roots and water damage. RSS’s civil and installation crews continually undertake minor civil and maintenance work for other facility managers, property services, city and outer metropolitan councils. Tasks are as diverse as constructing a 60m post and rail Colorbond fence down the cliff face at a Coorong Council riverside reserve to applying nameplate stickers on a directory board of a DPTI building lobby. Quite often these jobs are the ones larger contractors find too difficult or too small to be interested in, or in some cases, they do not have the capacity or accreditation to undertake this type of work. New Guardrail Installation – Stirling North Twelve months ago, RSS won a job for the City of Port Augusta to supply and install a 50 linear metre concrete sleeper retaining wall and 100m of W-Beam Guardrail, including end treatments. The works were successfully completed by our four-man crew within a week and won much council praise. RSS has recently gained prequalification on the DPTI panel to install, repair and maintain road safety barrier systems and since this time has conducted numerous repairs in the metro and southern region including additional minor, routine and emergency civil works. RSS now operates a dedicated guardrail installation crew armed with a state-of-the-art Pauselli Guardrail Post Rammer and purpose-built 12t crane truck to enable high productivity and a competitive edge. We have also completed substantial guardrail bridge works for the District Council of Yankalilla and the Clare & Gilbert Valleys Council and various minor repairs and new installs for up to 10 other local and regional councils.

How many machines do you have in your fleet and what types? Nationally, we now have in excess of 80 items of major plant, minor equipment and motor vehicles. The major plant and equipment in Adelaide is the sign manufacturing facility. Four specialised civil crews, operate as a group or separately as needed. Sign manufacturing – 162 TS Durst roll to roll inkjet flatbed printer, Crest TS1400 roll to roll laminator, CNC metal router, Henrob seamless riveter. Guardrail installation, repairs and maintenance – 2018 Pauselli 900 G/R rammer and earth drill, Isuzu FSR flatbed crane truck, plant trailer, Isuzu 1t dual cab ute. Civil works and facility maintenance – 8t dual cab tipper with Hiab crane, plant trailer, mini excavator. Installations (major) – 4.5t Isuzu light truck,
