Dan Carmazzi ’71 Dan Carmazzi ’71 stepped up to take over the varsity football program following George Petrissans’ move to Clovis West High School last spring. Six months into it, he is loving the challenge. Carmazzi, who returned to Christian Brothers in 2012, worked as offensive coordinator with Petrissans and currently serves as the school’s assistant athletic director and as a teacher. “I really enjoy coaching these young men,” says Carmazzi. “It was great to coach with George Petrissans and work with these young men as their offensive coordinator. But, I realized that I missed leading a program. I’ve got a great group of coaches and I’m thankful to the administration for giving me this opportunity.” Carmazzi’s varsity coaching staff includes Evan Boylan, Al Hooker, Dave Hoskins, Sean Morris and Kevin Polnasek. “Naming Dan to the position of head coach ensures that our players will continue to benefit from his vast coaching experience and, more importantly, his character and high standards of excellence,” says CB President Lorcan Barnes. “It is fantastic to have an ideal candidate on staff who is ready, willing and eager to take on the job.” “Coach Carmazzi is a great choice,” says Kyle Cherry ’15. “He has the respect of the entire team and we all like playing for him.” Carmazzi’s experience includes 31 years as head football coach, seven years as an assistant athletic director, and nine years as an athletic director at Jesuit High School. Carmazzi was named a Model Coach by the California Interscholastic Federation in 2005 and is a member of the 200-win club.
CB Joins Capital Athletic League in CIF Realignment Christian Brothers High School athletics fall under the direction of the Sac-Joaquin Section (SJS) of the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) – California’s governing body for high school sports. To accommodate changing school populations and new high schools in the section, the SJS goes through the realignment process every four years. With this year’s realignment cycle, CB will compete at the Division III level which is comprised of three leagues: the Capital Athletic League, the Tri-County Conference and the Valley Oak League. CB is a member of the Capital Athletic League which also includes Casa Roble, El Camino, Mira Loma, Rio Americano and Vista del Lago. “The SJS has been meeting for about two years regarding this realignment cycle,” explains Dale Milton. “In 2000, the Sac-Joaquin section had 137 schools. In 2014, there will be almost 200 schools. Realignment is essential to ensuring that schools are placed in the appropriate Divisions and that new schools can be integrated into the various conferences. I believe the new CAL offers us some tough competitors, and exciting playoff opportunities for all of our sports programs.”
