LEE’S VIEW Welcome back to Station View Welcome to Droylsden, all their management team, players and staff for the opening day of the Evostick North campaign, It seems like an absolute age since I took the role of first team manager and I feel like I have spoken to hundreds of players throughout the last three months. Finally we are here and with competitive fixtures which is why we are involved with football and the sport we love. I feel like I have been at Railway for a long time now having spent three years as a player, three years as assistant and now making the step up to first team manager is an honour and I am proud that the club and committee put faith in me to ensure that we do well this season in all competitions but primarily the league. We had an absolutely fantastic season last year and to finish in eighth place was an unbelievable achievement, throw in the FA cup run that we had and it is safe to say the season was beyond our ambitions at the start of the season. We now enter a new season with a new management team and a new group of players that are all hungry to do well at this level. It has taken time and patience to get the squad together and I am now happy with the players we have recruited and the age of the squad. We are a young side and a side that I am hopeful can grow together and over the next few seasons can really grow into an exciting group of players.
5
I am sure over the coming weeks I will speak about individual players and how they are performing, but I think I should mention Dan Thirkell in my first program notes. Dan had an offer from Tadcaster and he turned it down and I was delighted to secure his services for the season. He enters his eleventh season at the club and at this level of football that is unheard of when players often move around from club to club. I have made Dan club captain, and I believe he is now of an age and a maturity that can see him lead the club through his best playing years. He is influential around the changing rooms and as them that know him are aware, he knows when to be serious and when to lighten the mood. Through pre season we have played some teams above us and also teams below and in total played 9 fixtures, this may seem to many people a lot of games, but in this current climate, I feel that matches serve better than training sessions to provide match fitness, it also has given the players extra time to gel as a team and get to know how I want the changing room to be. I believe we are a lot closer as a unit than we might have been but we still have to take our time to adjust to the league and give the players the chance to prove they can compete at this level. I looked around the changing room at the Harrogate Town friendly and really thought we had a good squad and I believe that we can do well this season. When the fixtures were released, I was told by everyone what a difficult start we had, Spennymoor, Brighouse, Scarborough, Clitheroe and todays visitors Droylsden. I agree without a doubt, its difficult but then you look through all the teams and is there an easy game? I don’t think any fixtures are easy at this level and the players are well aware of this. I love that about this league and as you look through social media at the different teams you see that everyone recruits good players. So early on in the season you have a look at the results and see where teams are and who will be thereabouts at both at the top and bottom of the league.
Last season we played Droylsden away on the third match and although we took the lead through Ryan Sharrocks an injury to John Maloney set us back and we lost 6-1. At that point we believed Droylsden would take some stopping, but they fell off a bit but I am sure they will be in and around the highest reaches of the league this time around. At Station View we won 4-3 in a cracking match. I hope that you enjoy the season and support us throughout, football is always a roller coaster of a ride and I don’t see this season being any different, Enjoy the game and the season
Lee Ashforth Manager, Harrogate Railway
But for the first game, how can you judge? Pre-season results mean nothing, everyone knows that and when you are changing formations and personal its hard to get a true reflection of how teams will do. I have obviously kept an eye on Droylsden as I am sure they have on us but today will be a marker post to get us started and something that we can constantly try to improve on.

PRE-SEASON ROUNDUP 1 Hartlepool United XI (0-2) Harrogate Railway’s 2015 pre-season campaign kicked off with a visit from Ronnie Moore’s Hartlepool. The League Two side had included former Leeds United striker Billy Paynter in their travelling squad and left Station View with a 2-0 win in Lee Ashforth’s first game in charge of The Rail. The fixture allowed new faces such as Jack Stockdill, Roy Fogarty and Cameron Lyn to make their first appearance in a Railway shirt; with the latter coming closest to grabbing a goal for the hosts. Hartlepool proved to be a tough start, as their Football League status would suggest, with goals from Lewis Hawkins and Scott Fenwick sealing the win.

Arguably Railway’s toughest test of pre-season came in just their second outing as a talented Middlesbrough U21 team made the journey to Station View. The 2014/15 Barclays U21 Premier League Second Division Champions triumphed 4-0 thanks to goals from Cutts, Jakupovic, Kitching and Jowers as Lee Ashforth’s men were forced to defend for large periods of the encounter. Railway did their best to cope with Boro’s accomplished passing and worked tirelessly without the ball, ensuring fitness levels continued to improve, while Tom Goodwin was in good form; making a series of impressive saves in the Railway goal. Pre-season roundup by Hal Boxhall-Dockree
Harrogate Railway’s History Harrogate Railway was formed in 1935 by workers at the Starbeck LNER depot and joined the local Harrogate League with some success, winning the British Railways National Cup in 1946. They borrowed £1,500 from the LNER and more than 300 workers contributed one old penny per week to repay the loan. This money secured ownership of the current Station View site. The 1950s saw the club progress through the West Yorkshire League to the Yorkshire League and they made the second round proper of the FA Amateur Cup in 1953, going out 3-2 at Harwich & Parkstone. Sadly, the loco sheds closed in 1959, subsequently affecting finances as many of the workers, and players, had to leave the area. Nevertheless, under the auspices of “Chick” Farr the club soldiered on through the sixties and they almost repeated their Amateur Cup exploits of the fifties when they made the first round proper in 1961 only to lose 4-2 at Whitley Bay. In 1964 they won promotion to the first division of the Yorkshire League, then just three steps from the Football League itself, and made the Yorkshire League Cup Final, losing to Farsley Celtic after a replay. The late sixties and the seventies became a real struggle and Railway had to pull out of the Yorkshire League and return to the Harrogate League in 1973. This gave the club time to re-group and they were back in the Yorkshire League in 1980 becoming founder-members of the new NCEL League in 1982. Freddie Cliff steered the club to promotion from the second division (north) and won the League Cup with a 5-0 victory over Woolley Miners Welfare in the final. Meanwhile a new junior structure was formed, thanks to the work of John and Mary Lindsay and now Railway can boast one of the best junior set- ups in the region. In the 1990-91 season Railway made their first major impression in the FA Cup, Denis Metcalf steering his team to the fourth qualifying round. Future manager Martin Haresign actually played in the 3-1 defeat at Chorley. Floodlights were installed in 1991 and a strong Sheffield United side, including Vinnie Jones, provided the star opposition at the official opening. Management changes and more financial hardship hindered progress as the nineties wore on. However, Dave Fell joined as boss in 1998 and won the NCEL first division but he departed at the end of the same season. Paul Marshall took the job on and, although it was a struggle, he kept Railway in the premier division. The club’s faith in him culminated in two amazing back-to-back FA Cup runs. The fourth qualifying round was reached for a second time in 2001, the run ending with a 3-2 defeat at home to Morecambe, the winner coming deep into injury time. A year later Railway went two better and, after a bewildering qualifying competition, the many who travelled to Berkshire witnessed a 2-1 win at Slough Town in the first round proper. The lowest-ranking club ever to reach the second round were drawn at home to Bristol City, top of the second division, the highest-ranking club in the competition at that stage. Railway opted to play the game at home and temporary stands adorned Station View. Sky TV beamed the game around the globe and the club was the focus of the football world for a couple of hours in December 2002. Bristol City were made to fight for their 3-1 win, Steve Davey netting with 17minutes to go, but once again an injury-time goal sealed Railway’s fate. Despite winning the NCEL President’s Cup, Paul Marshall was not reinstated. Leeds duo Dave Harrison and John Francis were appointed but, after just one win in 11 games and early exits from the FA competitions they stepped down. Martin Haresign was brought in to steady the ship and retain NCEL status.
Railway finished in the top three in 2006 and achieved Uni-Bond Northern Premier League status, the vital victory at Sheffield probably the best display of the season. History had been made and the club was set to play at the highest level of the pyramid in its history. The first season in the Uni-Bond League proved to confound the bookies who predicted a basement finish. A good start was built upon and the campaign ended in a mid-table finish. Unfortunately Martin had to relinquish managerial duties for business reasons but Vince Brockie and new assistant Dave Morgan carried on the good work. The following season’s league form proved to be rather erratic but Railway finished well clear of the relegation zone in the end. Incredibly, another mighty FA Cup run dominated and the little club from Yorkshire reached the second round proper for a second time. A battling home victory over then unbeaten rivals Harrogate Town was the undoubted highlight of the qualifying rounds before Blue Square side Droylsden were sent packing 2-0 in the first round. Mansfield Town came to Station View on a soggy Sunday and BBC Match Of The Day screened the game live this time, complete with Ray Stubbs. Mark Lawrenson and Jonathan Pearce. Mansfield won 3-2 but not before two second-half goals from Danny Davidson gave them late scares. Assistant manager Dave Morgan was promoted to manager for the following season but found life difficult, gleaning only 2 points from the first 36. He resigned and in his place came Phil Sharpe and Richard Chattoe. Between them they staved off fears of relegation and looked for consolidation in the future. However, the start of the season was not one of the best and Christmas saw Railway again languishing at the bottom end of the table but an influx of good, battling players pulled the club away from the drop-zone. Richard Chattoe left mid-season and Nigel Danby came in as Phil’s assistant. Phil resigned at the end of the season and Nigel was appointed as manager, bringing in Mick Norbury as his right hand man. Nigel and Mick’s reign lasted just short of two seasons as they flirted with relegation in both years. In came a management team of Alan Parkes, Dennis Metcalfe, Bob Moffat & Steve Donoghue to replace them. Despite valiant efforts in the last six League games Rail found themselves in the bottom two when the season finished. Thankfully Rail were reprieved due to Durham City taking voluntary relegation and Woodley Sports being relegated due to a Ground Regulation ruling. The 2012-13 season started with the new management team of ex-Liversedge manager – Billy Miller and his assistant ex-Railway favourite Lee Ashforth in charge. Although most of the players were from a league below us it was a struggle to start with but things came good with a brand of football that hadn’t been seen at Station View for some time and by the end of that season Rail had finished in 18th position with a total of 41 points – well clear of the relegation zone. In addition Harrogate Railway finished with the best discipline record not only in the Northern part of the League but in all three Evo-Stik leagues. 2013-14 Billy & Ash consolidated our position within the League forging a strong relationship with Simon Weaver and Harrogate Town, dual registering players to boost the player pool at Railway. As a result, Railway finished 13th on 48 points for the season. 2014-15 season saw Railway finish with a record points tally and eigth - a record high. Nathan Cartman wont the golden boot for being the league’s top scorer. Lee Ashforth took the managerial reigns when Billy left during Summer 2015 and we look foward with excitement to the new season.

DANIEL
Having been part of the Railway set-up since the age of eight, two seasons spent at Scarborough aside, Dan Thirkell has become a household name amongst Railway supporters and a familiar face around Station View. While Thirkell’s presence has remained consistent, the club itself has undergone changes on and off the pitch since Dan first arrived at Station View. Thirlkell was of course a member of the squad to win promotion to the Northern Premier League Division One North, although it hasn’t always been plain sailing for the newly appointed Captain. The midfielder has had his fair share of relegation scraps over the years, but with the club now firmly on the up, Railway’s longest serving player insists there is no looking back. “I started here as a junior and have grown up through the ranks. I had a couple of years at Scarborough, then came back and played for the under 19’s, but since then have progressed into the first team. “I couldn’t see myself being anywhere else.” He added. “When I made my debut we were still in the counties league so to come here and make this step up has been great. We were third the year we got promoted but ever since then we haven’t looked back. “We escaped one year we should have been relegated, but ever since then the club has progressed forward. Looking into this year hopefully we can do the same again.” Major changes have taken place at Railway this off-season, including in the managers’ seat where Lee Ashforth has stepped up to replace the departing Billy Miller. Along with a number of changes to the playing squad, pre-season could be an unsettling time for existing squad members such as Thirkell, however the midfielder is positive about the season ahead and confident Lee is the right man to take Railway to the next level.
THIRKELL
He said: “I’ve built a great relationship up with Lee through the past three years and he’s become a mate as well as now being the gaffer. “He’s hard working and puts a lot of time in which is good for the club and hopefully he’ll progress us on the pitch as well. “I think you need to be five games in to really assess things but, looking from our point of view, Lee’s done very well bringing in the players he’s brought in and every week we seem to be getting stronger as a unit and progressing on the pitch. “Jack Stockdill has been good, Cameron Lynn looks electric at times and Roy Fogarty has come into his own and scored a few goals. “We’ve got a good set of lads here and Lee wouldn’t bring in anyone he doesn’t think would fit in with the lads that we already have. “The banter is always getting better in the changing room and I’m looking forward to getting going.” A healthy dressing room can often be carried over to the pitch; something Thirkell feels was of great importance in last season’s record breaking campaign. “I think fundamentally we did the right things last year, we had a great set of lads which has built on to this year and it looks like we’ve got another great core of lads that are willing to fight for each other on the pitch. “Last year we had a phenomenal team spirit that got us through, we went 13 games unbeaten and drove each other on throughout that stage and that carried on for the rest of the season.” If Thirkell and company can harness the team spirit of last season, we certainly have a very exciting campaign to look forward to.
“…another great core of lads that are willing to fight for each other”

WHO ARE DROYLSDEN FOOTBALL CLUB?
Droylsden were originally formed at the invitation of Joseph Cropper, the landlord of the Butchers Arms public house, to play behind the pub. After twenty years of friendlies and local leagues, disbandment, reformations and changes of strip, the club emerged from World War I the sole survivors amongst the village teams, and as members of the Manchester League. The club also adopted their now traditional colours of red and white, the inspiration for the unusual nickname of The Bloods. Two games in the 1921 Manchester Junior Cup Final against Hyde United who were in the Manchester Football League attracted over 1,500 fans to see Hyde prevail. However, the Bloods had their revenge two years later, taking the Cup from their local rivals. The 1930s was the era of Droylsden’s record goal scorer, Ernest “Gilly” Gillibrand, scorer of 275 goals in just four seasons. Gilly’s goals saw Droylsden to the Manchester League Championship in 1931 and again in 1933, and in the latter season he aided Droylsden to the Third Qualifying Round in their first season in the FA Cup. In 1936, the club successfully applied to join the Lancashire Combination and, a season later, became a nursery club to Manchester City, whose A team played at the Butchers Arms. Also their surplus players were available to Droylsden, who were then disqualified from the FA Cup.
When other competitions were suspended in 1939 at the start of World War II, Droylsden entered the Cheshire League, reaching their highest ever league position as runners-up in their second season in 1945-46. However, the club couldn’t build on that start and, four seasons later, failed in their second successive bid for re-election. Worse was to come with the sale of the Butchers Arms lease to Belle Vue FC, who renamed themselves Droylsden United. All of which meant that the Bloods were forced out to the nearby Moorside Trotting Stadium. The town wasn’t big enough for two clubs, especially with bad feeling between them, and after the local council bought the ground, a merger was negotiated. Droylsden came home in 1952 to a renovated ground whose pitch had been rotated to its present position, finally eradicating a long-standing drainage problem. Two decades in the Combination ended in 1968 with a return to the Cheshire League, after the formation of the Northern Premier League. The club won the Manchester Senior Cup in 1973, 1976 and 1979 and enjoyed some FA Cup success, reaching the Fourth Qualifying Round four times in five seasons and the Cup proper twice. In 1976 Droylsden lost 5-3 in a First round replay at Grimsby Town, after a late home goal was disallowed. In 1978, Dave Taylor’s goal at Rochdale sent Drolysden through to a second round tie at home to Altrincham, who ended the run with a 2-0 win.
However when the late 1970s side broke up, Droylsden’s fortunes slumped, and they finished a distant bottom of the First Division in 1982. They were then placed in Division Two of the new North West Counties Football League. The unstable period ended with the appointment of Mark Fallon as player-manager. In his second season Fallon guided the club to the Second Division Championship, which was Droylsden’s first senior honour. After finishing third in the inaugural season of the Conference North in 2004-05, Droylsden were looking to go one better and reach the top tier of non-league football for the first time in their history. A fourth-place finish in the 2005-06 season gave Droylsden a second chance to reach the Conference National through the playoffs. However, they narrowly missed out on promotion in a penalty shoot-out in the final against Stafford Rangers. On 29 March 2006 Droylsden lost 2-1 to Hyde United in the final of the Manchester Premier Cup. On 18 April 2007 they beat Flixton 3-0 in the final of the Manchester Premier Cup. Three days later they beat Harrogate Town 2-0 and so won promotion to the Conference National as Conference North champions with two games in hand. However, they struggled in the Conference National, and were relegated back to the Conference North on 8 April even though they beat Farsley Celtic 2-1, due to Weymouth’s draw against Grays Athletic the same evening. A return to the blue square north in the 2008/09 season saw Droylsden finish seventh with an almost completely rebuilt squad. Winners of the Manchester cup and
a long unbeaten run in the FA cup, only to be disqualified for an administration error regarding an ineligible player. 2009/10 saw Droylsden clinch a play off spot finishing fifth in the league and after a great display against Fleetwood Town winning 2-0, they lost the away leg 3-1 and went out 5-4 on penalties. The 2010/11 season threw up a mixed bag of results and given the high standards the club has set itself over recent years it was a disappointment not to be involved in the play offs, having said that the club continues to punch above its weight in the Blue Square North on low attendances and should be proud that they are able to compete in such a tough league against clubs of such high pedigree. The FA Cup and the FA Trophy runs were highlights of the season. The team got further than ever before in The Trophy which was a fantastic achievement in itself. The club was also involved in a great FA Cup run culminating in drawing at home to Leyton Orient on live television only to be beaten in extra time at the away replay in a somewhat bizarre ending to a game in which for long periods the Bloods outplayed the O’s. Silverware was once again in the trophy cabinet courtesy of another Manchester Premier Cup win over Ashton United in the final. The Bloods winning a competitive game 4-3. The 2011/12 season saw the Bloods finish in a respectable ninth position in the Blue Square North.
20 23
DROYLSDEN FOOTBALL CLUB HISTORY (continued) They exited the FA cup at the 4th qualifying round after two games with Blyth Spartans which was disappointing as they dominated these matches but could not convert the chances that came their way. A great win over Mansfield Town at home in the FA Trophy was a season highlight but they were beaten in the next round by Kidderminster Harriers. Droylsden’s dominance of the M/cr premier cup in recent years came to an end when they were not in a position to field a team to contest the final, the game and the cup were awarded to Mossley. The 2012/2013 season proved to be the worst season for a good number of years in terms of both results and off field problems, financial constraints on the club meant that more resources were channelled into sorting out these finances and the playing side obviously suffered, perhaps inevitably relegation loomed for most of the season despite the best efforts of management and players. So a new start in a new league beckons for 2013/2014 in the Evo Stik Premier league. The 2013/2014 season was a disaster on the field but off it a great triumph was relatively unheralded outside the club and that was the achievement of staying in business and being able to continue the history of Droylsden FC, all funds were channelled into paying off our debts with nothing left for the playing budget, inevitably despite the best efforts of everyone involved relegation to the Evo Stik first division ensued, hopefully now is the time for rebuilding as we look to the future and try to put the dark days behind us. The 2014/2015 season finally saw some stability return to the club, off the field our chairman managed to bring our finances under control with the settlement of a large debt, and on the field we were in a position to field a competitive team for the first time in a few seasons. A mid table finish was a great improvement on previous years and whilst it was not a remarkable season in terms of success it does look as if we have managed to stop the downward spiral the club had been involved in and it gives us a platform to try and bring some success back to the club, this season did prove to the Droylsden faithful that there is light at the end of a long, dark tunnel and hopefully this season can be the start of another journey onwards and upwards.

DROYLSDEN FC - PLAYER PROFILES
Dave Pace – Chairman/Manager
His association with the club stretches back to the early nineties where he played for the clubs youth team in the Lancashire league. As a player he had spells abroad with Dallas Tornados and Olympiakos before returning to England and taking a keen interest in Droylsden, a club his father watched from the terraces. He has been chairman of the club since 1993/94 and after a succession of managers, he took over as manager in 1998 when the club was in the Unibond 1st division. Since then he has won the Unibond 1st division, Unibond Presidents Cup, the Peter Swales Challenge Shield and the Manchester Premier Cup a number of times. After a heartbreaking play off final defeat in 2005/06 against Stafford he won the Conference North title in 2006/07 to take the club to its highest level of non league football for the first time in its history. Although disappointingly we were relegated after only one season it will always be looked upon as a great achievement.
Aeon Lattie - Assistant Manager/Player
alike, a big man with a big heart for the game.
Nathan Haynes (11/01/96 - Midfield)
Signed from Congleton Town in the close season, Nathan impressed the management with his skills and commitment in the run up to the new season, quality midfield player who can both win the ball and set play up, good distribution.
Fernando Moke (10/11/88 – Midfield)
Fernando has re signed again this year for the bloods, his attacking play and exciting skills on the ball are the epitome of what football should be like here at the Butchers Arms, is a real crowd favourite and provides good width for the team.
Andrew Langford (12/07/88 - Defender)
Andy joins us this season from Congleton Town but is no stranger to the Butchers Arms having played here in the past and he is a welcome addition to the team, a stalwart defender who can read the game well and seems to be in the right place at the right time, good with the ball at his feet and not afraid of a tackle.
A player and manager who seems to have been at Droylsden forever, a stalwart defender for the club for many years making his return this season whilst continuing with the management side of things, he is part of the fabric of the club and has formed a successful partnership with Dave lasting many years.
Ben McNamara (Defender)
Alan Cross - Physio
Christopher Middleton (16/02/89 – Defender)
Crossy has been with the club for many years and has proved to be an valued member of staff, always good with the banter so as well as being a skilful professional so can also maintain players spirits when they need it most.
Ged Murphy – Player/Coach
Ged is no stranger to the club and he re-joins us from Prescot Cables as a player and coach. A right sided midfielder or defender he is a great motivator and strong character with a good knowledge of the game.
Jim Vince – Coach
Jim is a very knowledgeable coach who has experience at the Crewe football academy and was at Congleton Town, he has become an asset to the club and his input both in training and on match days is very much welcomed, good with players and staff
Another who has put pen to paper with us for the new campaign after a decent season last time, a no nonsense defender who got better as the season progressed, was a baptism of fire last year but gained some good experience and it will stand him in good stead for this campaign. New signing from his last club, Congleton Town, Chris is a solid defender with a good head on his shoulders, can read the game well and should prove to be a good addition to the squad.
George Bower (11/11/90 - Full back)
New signing in the close season from Ramsbottom, played well in the pre season friendly games and in training, is a versatile right back who is good on the ball and likes to get forward.
Stephen Hall (14/02/89 - Midfield)
Re joined the Bloods from Witton Albion last season has always been a firm favourite with the fans and is a welcome addition to the squad, great midfielder and has already proved he has an eye for a goal, now has the experience as well as the quality.

DROYLSDEN FC - PLAYER PROFILES Ben Hampson (01/09/1993 - Defender)

Michael Monaghan (17/12/93 – Midfield)
MJ impressed greatly when he was playing against us for Burscough last season and we had to sign him, he is an exciting young player, tenacious in the tackle but with bags of skill, is effective by making his trade mark runs through midfield. Re signed for the current campaign, a crowd pleaser and everyone at the club is happy he has decided to stay.
Joe Cooper (25/09/94 – Centre half)
Signed from Oldham Athletic and shone in the pre season games, excellent ball winner and good vision, should provide the much needed stability in the centre of the defence.
Dempsey Smith (11/06/90 – Midfield)
Joins us from Farsley Celtic and is an exciting addition to the team and midfield dynamo with a range of skills

Jake Prescott (14/07/96 – Forward)
New signing joins us this season from a spell in the USA, shone in games pre season, has good movement up front and an eye for goal, has a good appetite for the game and will be looking to establish himself in the team with some early goals.
Luke Sharry (09/03/90 – Midfield)
Luke is no stranger to us here at the Butchers Arms and we are all pleased he has decided to return for the current campaign, a skilful midfield player
28
with bags of experience and a wonderful range of passing skills, on his day he is capable of playing with the very best.
Chris Middleton (16/02/89 – Defender)
Chris joins us this season from Congleton Town, he is a local lad living in Ashton u Lyne, he comes here on good recommendations from his previous club and we are looking to him to join a defensive set up which should be an improvement on previous years.
Robert Doran (16/03/91 – Forward)
Robert has stayed on this year to build on his growing reputation as a front man, likes the way football is played here at the ButchersArms and so knows if he makes the runs he will be found, has got good goals in him.
Josh Sumner (03/01/94 – Forward)
Josh initially joined us last season and has re signed for this campaign, he is an exciting forward who likes to takes people on and terrorise defences, good on the ball and is a good passer of the ball, low centre of gravity so very hard shake off.
Daniel Parkinson (01/07/93 – Left back)
Daniel is a local lad who only lives a stone’s throw from the ground, relatively inexperienced at this level but has shown in pre season he can easily make the step up, very exciting find and we are hoping for good things from him this season.
Shaquille Clarke-Adams (Midfield)
Shaquille joins us from Brighouse ex Man City, he is a robust and skilful midfielder has all the attributes needed for that position, is both a ball winner and a play maker in the middle of the park.
Micheal Pino (03/09/96 – Midfield)
Micheal joins us from Crewe and is a prolific young talent, plays in midfield and has bundles of energy also a great playmaker for the team with his cultured passing, he is exciting to watch and should prove to be a good asset to the team this year.

PRE-SEASON ROUNDUP 3 Nostell Miners (2-0) Railway got their first win of pre-season back at Station View with a 2-0 success over NCEL Premier Division outfit Nostell Miners. Despite results taking on less importance at this stage of the season, there was a collective sigh of relief as Stephen Bromley latched onto Jason Mycoe’s cross-field ball and placed his shot through the goalkeeper’s legs. Harrogate doubled their lead in the second half and put the contest beyond Nostell when good wing play from Ryan Sharrocks picked out Jack Stockdill to notch his first goal for the club.

With the confidence of a win behind them, Railway went into the highly anticipated clash with Darlington in good spirits. Former Station View favourites Nathan Cartman and Rob Youhill were included from the start for Darlington, but it was Railway who grabbed the initiative in the first half; twice taking the lead through Roy Fogarty and Stephen Bromley. Inevitably, Cartman levelled the score on both occasions with trademark finishes, while Youhill was helped off the pitch by his concerned Mum after suffering a dislocated elbow in an entertaining first half. The visitors’ quality shone through in the second half as a much changed Darlington eleven scored three unanswered goals past Railway courtesy of Kevin Burgess, Tom Portas and Adam Mitchell.

PRE-SEASON ROUNDUP 4
Yorkshire Amateur FC (5-1)
Originally scheduled as an away fixture, Railway’s clash with Yorkshire Amateur was switched to Station View at the last minute due to a waterlogged Bracken Edge (in July!). Railway ran out comfortable winners against the NCEL Division One side, producing an accomplished performance to put five goals past the visitors. Roy Fogarty and Ryan Sharrocks both played their part in the victory with two goals apiece before Vincent Dhesi’s neat chip rounded off the scoring for the rampant hosts. A late goal for Yorkshire Amateur provided a slight consolation, however the gulf in class was evident throughout as Lee Ashforth’s side recorded their second win of pre-season.

Silverware was up for grabs in Railway’s seventh pre-season fixture as they took on Harrogate Town in the annual John Smith’s trophy. Town proved too strong for Railway in the end as Louie Swain’s 57th minute goal saw the hosts retain the trophy in a well contested affair. Simon Parkes and Jason Mycoe impressed for Railway, keeping Town’s dangerous attack at bay for the most part of the contest. The visitors threw bodies forward but couldn’t break down a well-drilled Town back line, although there was a moment to remember for Tom Goodwin who made an outstanding save low to his left deep into the second half.

RAILWAY LADIES
Harrogate Railway v Brighouse Town
Railway Ladies opened up their pre-season campaign against a very talented Brighouse side, who only just missed out on promotion from the North East Premier League in 14/15. Within the first 5 minutes Railway were up against it with the opposition spreading play & controlling the tempo for fun. Railway were sluggish and only the desire of player of the match Jenny Huddleston kept them at bay with endless tackles. However on the 15th minute mark a slick bit of play from Brighouse’s back line led to their striker finding the ball on the edge of the Railway box and curling a fine shot in the bottom corner. Railway endeavored to get back into the game but Brighouse were relentless in their power, composure and ability which shone through and6 left Railway 3-0 at the break. Railway regrouped for the second half and a fine string of saves from Charlotte Donnelly kept the score at 3. However on the 75th minute Brighouse again displayed their class with a well worked move down the left which left the Rail keeper helpless to stop a screamer in the top left hand corner. Overall a stern test for Railway but a great display of fitness which will bode well for the rest of pre-season.
Hemsworth Ladies v Harrogate Railway Ladies
Railway Ladies traveled to Hemsworth for their second pre-season game with quite a few debutantes who have joined for the 15/16 campaign. Railway started fast and some intricate play from the right hand side involving Nicola Hadley and Lauren Taylor before the ball fell to Sheridan Douglas who smashed the ball home from 12 yards. Railway didn’t stop there and Louise Donnelly creatively created some space and played in Sandra Clarke who outpaced the opposing defender before placing her shot against the post, only for skipper Ali Purvis to tap in. Hemsowrth could not cope with the pressure and strength displayed by Railway and in the 40th minute a pin point corner found Lauren Taylor’s head and the ball flew into the top corner. Hemsworth rallied and a bizarre long kick confused the Rail keeper which bounced over her head into the top corner - Half Time 1-3. Railway came out in the 2nd half with a message to use the ball better and they sure did that with some impressive play involving many players. It wasn’t long before the ball’s again found Sheridan ‘s foot after clever midfield play between Jade Holt, Nic Hadley and Chloe Elphick and Sheridan again showed her composure in slotting home. Hemsworth again pressed the Rail defense and despite the best efforts of the back 4 a penalty was conceded from a late tackle and Hemsworth scored. By this time Chloe Chrombie was causing chaos down the left and her ability led to a cross come scramble where Hemsworth handled on the line on for Chloe Elphick to dispatch the spot kick. All in all a good day for Railway with many players impressing. The Ladies move on to a tournament on Sunday 16th in Tingley with fitness, good football, fun and hopefully a medal all on the cards!

PRE-SEASON ROUNDUP 5 Knaresborough (1-1) Another local test followed shortly after the clash with Harrogate Town as Knaresborough provided a stern opposition at Manse Lane. The hosts had the lion’s share of the first half and Graham Whitehead’s goal saw Railway go into the break behind in their penultimate pre-season friendly. Lee Ashforth’s half time team talk saw Railway up their game, however, with Greg Kidd finding an equaliser just five minutes after the interval. Harrogate improved as the contest went on, with Cameron Lynn’s driving runs causing Knaresborough problems, although neither side could find a winner and the match ended all square.

Harrogate Railway’s ninth and final friendly against Field AFC provided the most unusual moment of pre-season as the two sides played out a 1-1 draw. Tom Goodwin had been in good form between the sticks throughout pre-season, but not even he would have expected his goal kick to bounce over the head of Field’s goalkeeper and put Railway ahead. Field found a deserved equaliser in the second half from a corner, although neither side could take the lead, despite both hitting the woodwork on one occasion.
SPENNYMOOR TOWN Tuesday 18th August - Away
Harrogate Railway’s first away league fixture of 2015/16 sees Lee Ashforth’s side travel to The Brewery Field to take on Spennymoor Town. The last time the two sides met Railway came away with an impressive 3-1 win, and in doing so became one of only three sides to leave Brewery Field last season with a league victory. Only promoted Darlington and Salford recorded fewer losses at home than Spennymoor last season, ensuring Railway will face a tough contest. Spennymoor Manager Jason Ainsley’s pre-season campaign ended impressively with wins over Tadcaster Albion and Darlington 1883. The latter were comfortably dispatched 3-0 in the final warm-up game thanks to goals from Danny Frost, Glen Taylor and Shane Henry, who are all likely to feature against Railway on Tuesday night. Spennymoor take on runaway North-West Counties League winners Glossop North End in their season opener today and will be looking to improve on last After Spennymoor, Harrogate Railway travel season’s 5th placed finish. to St. Giles Road where Brighouse Town FC will be Railway’s third opponents of the 2015/16 campaign. Having secured promotion the year before, Brighouse Town finished 14th in their first season in the Northern Premier League Division One North in what was a solid first campaign. Lee Ashforth’s side came out on top the last time the two sides met, however, triumphing 4-1 at St. Giles Road last December. Manager Paul Quinn will be looking to continue a sequence of four straight pre-season wins in league matches against Trafford and Ossett Town before Railway arrive in West Yorkshire. Despite recent wins over Basford United, AFC Emley, Ashton United and Huddersfield Town AFC, a 4-2 pre-season loss to Yorkshire Amateur will be cause for concern for Brighouse fans. The St. Giles Road faithful will now be hoping star striker Tom Matthews can breach the Railway defence come next Saturday.

Points From the Past HOW does the song go?
n be, all ain, happy as ca “Here we are ag ny…” m jolly good co pa good friends and Another season in the Northern Premier League, now the Evo-stik League, our tenth according to my reckoning. The status of our little club has strengthened in those ten years and last year’s final placing was our best so far. That status was magnified in the 200708 season by our magnificent run in the FA Cup which brought us national, nay world, recognition and our second appearance on live television. Our opponents today, Droylsden, were part of that adventure. We had beaten Harrogate Town in the fourth qualifying round and the draw brought us another home tie in the first round proper. Some were disappointed in the draw but the more positive of us believed that the tie was a winnable one, and I mean no disrespect whatsoever to Droylsden. At home on our own pitch, slope and all, we were really looking for an upset. It was a fine day for the game and an enthusiastic crowd enjoyed a very entertaining afternoon. We started rather shakily and conceded a goal in the first half, Terry Fearns finding the net for the visitors on 15 minutes, but we were relieved to see it chalked out for a handling offence.
The second half was a different story, two goals inside five minutes were to settle the issue. Scotty Ryan’s free-kick was forced home by Byron Littlefair and then Ryan Haigh ran on to Nick Smith’s through ball to smash home the second. Amazing scenes here at Station View and we were all in the old Dagger the following day for the draw for the second round. The balls were disappearing from the canister at an alarming rate but still no sign of Railway, or Leeds United for that matter. Leeds were then in League One and had drawn their first round game against Hereford United. Their ball was amongst the final four, along with ours. Tension at its highest. However, we missed out on a possible tie against Leeds but it was probably just as well as they went on to lose the replay. The second round match would be against Mansfield Town at home and, as was the case five years earlier, we would stage the game at Station View. The bookmakers were only offering odds of 5-1 for a Railway victory but, as the record books show, we went on to lose what became a tight game in the end 3-2. Hard to believe that it all happened eight years ago. All the best for the new season lads. Ken Welford
