craig angus On behalf of Craig Angus welcome to the 29th Top Cut Bull Sale. We realize the last year has been a challenge to everyone but we will keep moving forward. Our philosophy has not changed in 29 years of selling bulls. We want to offer top quality bulls for the commercial cattlemen/women. Bulls that are not pushed, but grown out on a high percentage forage ration with their longevity in mind. Put on grass in late April to the end of October with no extra feed other than what Mother Nature can provide. A strict culling program that begins within hours of birth until they are offered for sale. I strongly believe if I won’t use a bull on my cows how can I expect you to use him on yours? We don’t chase fads or rush to buy the latest show ring champion’s genetics. We use the same bloodlines in our purebred herd as our commercial cows and background all our calves. The genetics we are offering work. We see it every day when the calves come up to the bunks. With COVID regulations changing often we encourage you to come out ahead of time and look through the bulls. We will be broadcasting the sale on DLMS for anyone who can’t make the sale and videos of all the bulls will be posted on DLMS in early March. Lastly you will notice a change to this year’s sale. Hawkeye Ranching Company Ltd have built a new calving barn and with their increased number of bulls they have decided to have their own bull sale. Each operation has unique challenges and opportunities. Ultimately, our goals are similar, we want to produce cattle that enable us to make a satisfying living at ranching. Over the years we have worked with the unique circumstances here to build a herd of quality purebred and commercial cows. These bulls are the result of careful selection to produce hardy cows tolerant of extreme terrain and weather while raising calves each year that will put money in the bank. The cows graze year round to meet all or part of their forage requirements depending on the season. Therefore, they must have great feet and legs to handle the steep and rocky terrain and exceptional hair coats for conserving energy when the winter winds howl. Additionally, cows are expected to calve without assistance as calving, seeding, and fencing happen simultaneously, so low birth weights and good udders are necessary. Finally, for tasks such as branding or preg-checking we have a minimal crew, so only good tempered cattle are tolerated. These bulls ran at their mothersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; sides on pasture without creep feed from birth until weaning in early November. From weaning until mid-May, they were on a mixed ration of hay and pellets fed at one percent of body weight resulting in gains around 2.5 pounds per day. Since May 20th, the bulls have been on native grass pasture. At the beginning of October, the bulls we gradually started on a ration developed by Cargill for growing bulls. During the winter, long yearlings are fed this ration at 1% of body weight mixed with dry hay while remaining on pasture and walking over a mile a day between feed, water, and shelter. These bulls develop gradually to give them the best chance for longevity. Like the cowherd, we are continually culling animals for any performance, temperament, or conformational issues, so what you see here is the best not only of this year but also of years of herd development. We are excited to present this outstanding group of the top 25 bulls from the 2019 calf crop. bear creek ANGUS Directions to ranch: 4 miles south of Piapot and 1½ miles west The past four years have been hard on the feed supply but these tougher years just further instill in us that Black Angus cattle are the ones that can get us through the tough years. There are many tools at one’s disposal in selecting your next breeding genetics: performance data, EPD’s, genetic testing, carcass data, but for myself nothing beats the process of culling. In a world of efficiency, I focus on cattle that will walk soundly the duration of their lives, milk and breed without any maintenance. This leads to fewer cull cows, requiring fewer heifer calves retained, maximizing calf production. When the structure, udder quality, and fertility is taken care of: I breed for length of body, eye appealing angus character, including an angus head which promotes calving ease, and lots of natural muscle. When selecting a sire, I try to use a bull with the fewest amount of flaws. Beef cattle have been compared to pork and poultry, but one aspect will always vary, our environment. It changes what type of cattle work where and on what inputs. Our cattle are raised on ranch conditions and are developed slowly to ensure longevity. We solely make our living raising cattle, commercial and purebred, and our cattle work for us because we need them to. And I believe they can work for you too. SIRE - EASTONDALE JACKSON 63’15 Jackson is impressive. Starting with large, good feet, legs with a little extra bone to them and natural thickness with a masculine angus head. His bulls are sure to please, they check all the boxes, but even more so do his heifers; they are incredibly consistent with a stamp to them. The first crop of heifers calved last year and their udder development is second to none. Aside from that, he’s an outcross pedigree that does not sacrifice quality in any shape or form. Right now, Jackson and Stoney are our flagship herdsires. I don’t believe we can ask for much more than these two sires do, and we are very fortunate to own them.

We retained this bull’s full brother for in herd use and bred a field of registered cows to him. His full brother’s bull calf crop averaged 3.5lbs per day of age, beating both Jackson and Stoney Creek’s bull calf average daily gains of 3.2lbs per day of age. Here’s a big performance bull with a big top, big hip, and lots of hair. His mother is an excellent Main Event daughter that is designated elite/ premier after having only four calves. I’m not sure why he was born quite so little, but his grandmother consistently had little calves, so perhaps that’s why he weighed only 62lbs at birth. He’s done very well and is a very balanced bull.

We had high hopes when we purchased ‘Stoney’, and he exceeded all of them. His heifers are flat out amazing, the bull calves are the most consistent that we have raised. We have a lot of history with this bull’s mother 56R; she raised 13 calves for us, her heifers were always at the top of the pen and most have gone on to be great cows. Last year’s high selling bull to Bone Creek Angus was a grandson of 56R. Maternal brothers have went to Travis Armstrong, Brett Bock, Hal Topham, and Chris Knight.

Recommended for Heifers. While he’s 84lbs off a mature cow, we used this bull’s full brother on heifers and never helped a single heifer calve. He’s a full brother to the herd sire 54D we retained for our own use. A lot of breeding potential in this guy.

A nice balanced bull from a great footed, great uddered cow. We were sad to lose this bull’s mother to a lump that we could not get cleared up this past summer. When looking through our pedigrees, when you see a Lucky Sevens cow, you can be sure she has amazing foot and udder structure.

This bull really looked nice at weaning time. Comes from a gorgeous cow, from one of our most prolific and strongest cow families, the lavender lady’s. The bulls grandmother stayed until she was 15 years of age and still had perfect feet and udder, and her last calf is in the sale too. I think this bull should work on larger heifers.

Windy is an impressive herd bull. He moves like a cat, is long, full of meat, and has successfully bred our heifers for years. We could easily breed cows to him but he calves too easy to not use him on our heifers.
