St. Mary’s Cathedral Bingo Evenings Offer Opportunity for Fellowship While Raising Important Funds
W
hen you take two Sunday evenings a month, then add fresh and homemade sandwiches and snacks, a chance to win cash prizes, raising money for a good cause, and fellowship all around, what do you get? BINGO! Our Knights of Columbus Council hosts Bingo games on two Sunday evenings each month in the Parish Center. Everyone is welcome to play — and indeed, many of the community who aren’t Catholic make it a regular occasion. Players know that each game has a payout of $25, and the evening offers a wide variety of games. Chuck Donner, K of C financial secretary, coordinates the games. His wife runs the kitchen, where volunteers prepare hot or cold sandwiches or soup, depending on the weather. Proceeds from the games usually are turned over to the Council’s general fund for various projects. “We usually get between 55 and 60 people each continued on back cover

Chosen to Do His Will The Feast of St. Anne — July 26
D
id you know that St. Anne is the patron saint of miners? In medieval times, the Virgin Mary and Jesus were often compared to precious metals of silver and gold. Hence, the lives that came from the womb of St. Anne made her the source of precious riches. Unlike Mary, St. Anne was not conceived without sin — but nevertheless, she would one day raise the Mother of God. That’s a pretty big deal! What was it about St. Anne that prompted God to give her such a significant role in the history of salvation? Not much is mentioned about St. Anne in the Bible,
but her name derives from the longer name “Hannah,” or the Hebrew word for “grace.” We understand that, having believed herself to be barren for 20 years, an angel appeared to Anne and told her that she would soon have a daughter that she should name Mary. When Mary was finally born, after many years of frustration and infertility on her parents’ part, Anne did just as she promised — she dedicated Mary to the Lord, and raised a holy woman who would mother Christ Himself! Although we do not know much more about St. Anne,
we can assume that she was a very holy woman based upon the woman her daughter, Mary, grew to be. Anne was the one from whom Mary learned to be a mother. She was the one from whom Mary learned to serve God. She was the one who instilled in Mary the confidence and faith to say “yes” to God — “May it be done to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38). St. Anne was given a great gift — a child — who she readily gave back to God. And, thanks to her faith-filled gratitude to God for His gift, Mary opened her heart to the will of God, and became the mother of Christ.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

hen Katharine Lee Bates composed the poem “America” — which would form the lyrics to the beloved song “America the Beautiful” — she drew her inspiration from her experiences during a cross-country trip in the summer of 1893. The trip’s highlight came when she reached the pinnacle of Pikes Peak in Colorado, and could gaze upon range after range of the Rocky Mountains on one side and the expanse of the Great Plains on the other. Moved by the vistas around her and the varied features of America she had seen, an idea for a poem and some of its words formed in her mind atop the mountain. That night, back in her hotel room, she completed the poem. I think the reason for the popularity of “America the Beautiful” is that it combines several themes into one coherent whole. The beauty and immensity of America’s natural creation, the rich abundance of our harvests, and the recognition of God’s generosity are woven together. The final product forms a hymn of thanksgiving for our land that goes beyond national pride to prayer, for God is the spiritual source for all the goodness we have. I think it’s a suitable theme for July, the month we celebrate Independence Day, our national holiday. Thankfulness, after all, is the basis of stewardship, the recognition that we’ve been given all we have. We’re then responsible to the Giver for the use we make of His gifts. Let us receive these gifts — the time, talent, and treasure entrusted to us — with thanksgiving. Let us offer praise to the Father of mercies for them, and let us use them in His service.

Our Marriage Preparation Ministry Preparing Couples for the Freedom to Enter into a Sacramental Union
T
hose of us who are or have been married know that marriage can be a rollercoaster. Joy, heartache, love and sorrow can all come to us throughout life. With this in mind, the Catholic Church has guidelines for couples to properly prepare for the Sacrament of Matrimony. “A sacramental marriage allows a bride and groom to say to each other, ‘I promise to be for you in the way that Christ is for us,’” says Fr. Jim Golka. Because the Cathedral schedule fills up quickly, it is recommended that engaged couples contact Fr. Jim or Fr. Joseph Thambi one year before their proposed date. Last year, 50 weddings were held. The marriage preparation process begins when the couple meets with one of our priests. Here, they learn about the sacrament and take an online inventory on a variety of topics. Couples then go
through the results with one of our parish’s Leader Couples. Furthermore, they meet with the priest and Music Minister to plan the liturgy. “In this process, the couple gains more freedom to enter into a sacramental union,” Fr. Jim says. “We also hope this experience deepens their relationship with God.” Fr. Jim says studies show that couples who engage in marriage preparation and attend a regular worship service tend to report happier marriages. To be married in the Catholic Church, at least one of the two must be a baptized Catholic. To begin the preparation process, couples should contact Fr. Funeral Sacristans Carry out Essential Work during a Difficult Time
W
hile the death of a loved one certainly presents a trying time, we are truly blessed with love and community as we celebrate our loved one’s life during their funeral. As the United States Council of Catholic Bishops says, “Funerals give us the opportunity to grieve and show others support during difficult times. Through our prayers and actions during these times we show our respect for life, which is always a gift from God, and comfort to those who mourn.” In the case of most funerals, there are just a few days to prepare. For our priests, this means adjusting schedules to make time to spend with grieving friends and family. Thus, the role of funeral sacristan is particularly important, as members make preparations for Mass while our priests are providing pastoral care to the bereaved. Fr. Jim Golka says sacristans are trusted individuals who help prepare and care for the items needed for the Mass. “A funeral is one of the most important things we do as a Church,” he says. “We not only assist the family in praying for eternal rest for their loved one, but we also spend time with the family providing assurances of our faith.” Besides helping our priests, the sacristans also gain their own blessings. “I’ve had sacristans tell me that this is one of the most fulfilling things they do,” Fr. Jim says. “They know that they are helping a family at a critical moment.” Fr. Jim Golka invites faithful and humble parishioners to get involved as a funeral sacristan. As he points out, sacristans have the privilege of learning more about the Catholic faith.
