S
etting up the nursery, installing the car seat, stocking up on diapers — the to-do list as you prepare for a new baby can be both exciting and exhausting. Sometimes, in the midst of washing tiny clothes, writing shower “thank you” notes and choosing a name, it can be easy to forget the most important thing that you, as a Catholic parent, will do for your child. “Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life,” the Catechism of the Catholic Church tells us (1213). The Church has always taught the necessity of Baptism for salvation — that is, welcome into heaven. It is the call and duty of Catholic parents to make every effort to aid their children in experiencing a relationship with Christ, here on continued on page 7

Forget the Resolutions...
Seize the Opportunities! Dear Parishioners,
O
ne of the most unforgettable years in our lifetimes is finally over and 2021 is here! With the new year, I recommend we forget the notion of making resolutions. This new year presents us with opportunities to practice faithful stewardship — that is, to view the start of 2021 as a time for opportunities instead of resolutions, and to choose to be the disciples we are called to be. The choice is ours, as it has always been. I know all too well that each New Year’s Day on Jan. 1, we do more than just begin a new calendar year. We make all kinds of promises, articulate expectations, and express hopes, desires and dreams. I don’t know who started that custom, but I do know I have spent years attempting with the best intentions to follow my own resolutions, only to become disappointed that most are forgotten all too soon. Therefore, it occurred to me that this year, I need a new and fresh approach to this. Perhaps we all need a new perspective. After all, isn’t that what faithful stewards are best at? The to-do list for 2021 should be seen as a list of opportunities to practice the discipleship intended by Jesus — not just at the beginning of each year, but each day throughout the year when presented with opportunities to be a Christian disciple. In doing so, we are practicing the stewardship way of life. Maybe this year, each of us will be open to embracing the connection between discipleship and stewardship. Discipleship and stewardship are indeed closely linked, so much so that it clearly defines our Catholic spirituality and touches every aspect of the life of the Church. I hope that the same vision is clearly in your sight — the moment of discovery

that stewardship is a way of life, a defining moment presenting opportunities to live what we believe, using our time, talents and treasure to reach others around us. Therefore, as we close out one of the most eventful years in modern history, and are at the start of a new year filled with promise and hopefulness, I ask you to join me in celebrating the opportunities that will present themselves during 2021. We need to keep our eyes, ears and hearts open to them. They will be there when we least expect them. Our Lord’s call to be faithful stewards of the gifts we have been given is already echoing in our hearts as we have concluded a season of giving in which God’s gift to us, Jesus Christ, remains the perfect gift that keeps on giving to each of us. If we continue to receive our Lord with grateful hearts, we can respond in our own way of giving time, talent and treasure back as opportunities to become Christ for others. I know that 2021 will be a year of great interest in what will happen in the world around us, and new opportunities will abound. Wait for them. Look for them. Treasure them when they become known. While resolutions always seem to be good ideas, opportunities are often what God has chosen for us to experience so that our lives may be more whole and fulfilling. Can you think of a better way to start a new year than to forget the resolutions, and instead seize the opportunities God has waiting for us? Sincerely yours in Christ, Fr. no de los años más inolvidables de nuestras vidas finalmente ha terminado y el 2021 está aquí! Con el año nuevo, recomiendo que olvidemos la noción de hacer resoluciones. Este nuevo año nos presenta oportunidades para practicar una corresponsabilidad fiel, es decir, para ver el comienzo de 2021 como un momento para oportunidades en lugar de resoluciones, y para elegir ser los discípulos que estamos llamados a ser. La elección es nuestra, como siempre lo ha sido. Sé muy bien que cada día de Año Nuevo, el 1 de enero, hacemos más que comenzar un nuevo año calendario. Hacemos todo tipo de promesas, articulamos expectativas y expresamos esperanzas, deseos y sueños. No sé quién inició esa costumbre, pero sí sé que he pasado años intentando con las mejores intenciones seguir mis propias resoluciones, solo para decepcionarme de que la mayoría se olvida demasiado pronto. Por lo tanto, se me ocurrió que este año necesito un enfoque nuevo y fresco para esto. Quizás todos necesitemos una nueva perspectiva. Después de todo, ¿no es eso en lo que los mayordomos fieles son mejores? La lista de tareas pendientes para el 2021 debe verse como una lista de oportunidades para practicar el discipulado que Jesús pretendió, no solo al comienzo de cada año, sino todos los días del año cuando se le presenten oportunidades para ser un discípulo cristiano. Al hacerlo, estamos practicando el estilo de vida de la mayordomía. Quizás este año, cada uno de nosotros esté abierto a aceptar la conexión entre el discipulado y la mayordomía. El discipulado y la mayordomía están, de hecho, estrechamente vinculados, tanto que define claramente nuestra espiritualidad católica y toca todos los aspectos de la vida de la Iglesia. Espero que la misma visión esté claramente a su vista: el momento en el que descubra que la corresponsabilidad es una for-
ma de vida, un momento decisivo que presenta oportunidades para vivir lo que creemos, utilizando nuestro tiempo, talentos y tesoros para llegar a quienes nos rodean. Por lo tanto, al cerrar uno de los años más memorables de la historia moderna, y al comienzo de un nuevo año lleno de promesas y esperanzas, les pido que se unan a mí para celebrar las oportunidades que se presentarán durante el 2021. Necesitamos para mantener nuestros ojos, oídos y corazones abiertos a ellos. Estarán allí cuando menos los esperemos. El llamado de nuestro Señor a ser fieles administradores de los dones que se nos han dado ya resuena en nuestros corazones al concluir una temporada de generosidad en la que el regalo de Dios para nosotros, Jesucristo, sigue siendo el regalo perfecto que sigue dándonos a cada uno de nosotros. Si continuamos recibiendo a nuestro Señor con corazones agradecidos, podemos responder a nuestra propia manera de devolver tiempo, talento y tesoro como oportunidades para convertirnos en Cristo para los demás. Sé que 2021 será un año de gran interés por lo que sucederá en el mundo que nos rodea, y abundarán las nuevas oportunidades. Espera por ellos. Búscalos. Atesóralos cuando se den a conocer. Si bien las resoluciones siempre parecen ser buenas ideas, las oportunidades son a menudo lo que Dios ha elegido para que experimentemos para que nuestra vida sea más completa y satisfactoria. ¿Puedes pensar en una mejor manera de comenzar un nuevo año que olvidar las resoluciones y, en cambio, aprovechar las oportunidades que Dios tiene esperándonos? Corpus Christi Welcomes New Parish Staff Member

he year 2020 brought many changes for all of us, though perhaps few saw their lives change quite as quickly and dramatically as our new Director of Music, Faith Formation and Youth Ministry, Rebecca Poncini. After deciding in the fall to move their family of 11 from California to the Midwest, Rebecca and her husband, Ray, applied for jobs here in October. By Nov. 12, they and their nine children — ranging in age from 10 months to 16 years — had made the move to Council Bluffs. On Nov. 16, Rebecca spent her first day in the parish office! Some of the transitions the Poncinis experienced during their first weeks in Iowa — like the difference in temperature between Sacramento and Council Bluffs — took a little getting used to, as Rebecca quickly learned that what had been considered a winter coat by California standards would certainly
not be adequate here! Wintry weather aside, the Poncinis immediately felt blessed to have made the move to our area, where they are thankful for the beautiful natural setting, the absence of traffic, a slower pace of life, and the genuine hospitality of everyone they meet. “I don’t think people understand how different life is in the Midwest,” Rebecca says. “It’s odd to us that people in the gas stations make eye contact and have conversations with us. In a good way, everything is a little slower here. It’s amazing to drive on the freeway and see nature. In Sacramento, there were a lot of little stressors and everything was so over the top. There is a calmer nature to how life is done here.” Reflecting on how many pieces of the puzzle fell into place for the Poncinis last fall, it is clear to continued on page 6

l año 2020 trajo muchos cambios para todos nosotros, aunque quizás pocos vieron cambiar sus vidas tan rápida y dramáticamente como nuestra nueva Directora de Música, Formación en la Fe y Ministerio Juvenil, Rebecca Poncini. Después de decidir en el otoño mudar a su familia de 11 de California al Medio Oeste, Rebecca y su esposo, Ray, solicitaron trabajo aquí en octubre. Para el 12 de noviembre, ellos y sus nueve hijos, de edades comprendidas entre los 10 meses y los 16 años, se habían mudado a Council Bluffs. ¡El 16 de noviembre, Rebecca pasó su primer día en la oficina parroquial! Aporta más de 20 años de experiencia en el ministerio de música, 10 años en el ministerio de jóvenes y cinco años en la formación en la fe a su función. Shortly after Rebecca found a position here at Corpus Christi, her husband, Ray, was hired as a resource teacher at St. Albert High School. And less than a month before the Poncinis arrived in town, Rebecca’s sister and her family had relocated from California to Lincoln. With their new jobs in a Catholic parish and school and family nearby, Rebecca and Ray have certainly seen the Lord at work in their lives here! As our new Director of Music, Faith Formation and Youth Ministry, Rebecca hit the ground running when she arrived in November. She brings over 20 years of experience in music ministry, 10 years in youth ministry and five years in faith formation to her role. On any given day, she can likely be found in the parish office, going over music selections and projections for the upcoming Masses or ensuring that faith formation materials are prepped and ready to go. Rebecca finds joy in each of the three “hats” she wears at Corpus Christi. “With music ministry, I love how you can weave the music in with the sacraments, so Easter Vigil, First Communion and Confirmation are some of my favorites,” she says. “With faith formation, I think the most important thing is looking out for the whole family, seeing how you can reach the parents and how that translates into helping them form kids in the faith. “Then with youth ministry, my goal is for them to realize that living the faith is bigger than a catechism class,” Rebecca adds. “It’s a normal part of your life and who you are. I like them to know that everybody has talents that are from God, they are all different, and He is going to use your talents in you.” Rebecca and Ray know firsthand what a difference early faith formation can make in one’s life. Both feel blessed to have been raised in strong Catholic families, and are committed to providing the same foundation for their own children. “I think if you stay close to the faith and close to the Church, it permeates everything,” Rebecca says. “It shapes who you are as a person, how you work, how you interact with others, and how you look at life.” As she continues to settle in here at Corpus Christi, Rebecca is thankful for both the opportunity to serve our parish and the countless blessings her family has found in their move to our area. “The people are very welcoming and the people I’ve met in the parish are very gracious,” she says. “Mass is lovely here, and I’m glad to be a part of that. We’re excited to be here and excited to see where God takes us now that we’re here.” 6

earth, but also, for eternity in heaven. Baptism is the first step in this journey. In order to help Catholic parents prepare for this joyous occasion, as well as a life of Christian parenthood, Corpus Christi Catholic Church asks those who would like to have their children baptized to attend our Baptism Preparation Class, along with their child’s godparents. The classes are designed to help parents understand the signs and significance of the Sacrament of Baptism, as well as the importance of the commitment that they are making, to raise their child in the faith. Our Lady of Carter Lake parishioner Sharon Orton recently went through the class with her granddaughter, who was preparing to have her two daughters, Sharon’s great-granddaughters, baptized. “It did bring me back to baptizing my own children,” Sharon says. “The Baptism was very exciting, I don’t know how to put it into words. It was a big relief and a big joy.” For many who go through the class, not only is the class a reminder of the beauty of the sacrament, but also an invitation to return to practicing their faith in an active way. Sharon encourages other parents to prioritize the sacraments, especially Baptism, and offers a reminder that there’s nothing more important than sharing the faith with your children. Here at Corpus Christi, we hope that, especially if people have been away from the Church, or want to baptize
