Message from the Director Over the past year, Carson City’s parks, trails and open space have seen unprecedented use. Outdoor recreation areas have never been more popular and provided solace for thousands of residents and visitors to the capital city. This has been an amazing time to get outside, be active, and discover new trails. The Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department has been proud to provide much needed recreation opportunities such as disc golf, snowshoeing, interpretive hikes, shooting sports, pickleball, golf, and swimming, among others, to help keep families healthy, active, and engaged in the community. As restrictions continue to lift, we look forward to expanding recreation services and providing more opportunities for you and your families to enjoy. The City will continue to upgrade and reimagine its park system to meet the needs of the community, with many more capital projects planned in the upcoming year. RANGE OF MOTION This class is designed to increase mobility and range of motion through a series of gentle, head-to-toe exercises in the 92 degree Adult Therapy Pool. These exercises are extremely low impact and are perfect for those with arthritis or who are recovering from surgery or injury. If physical limitations, injuries, joint pain, or stiffness limit your mobility and/or exercising options, this class might be just what you need. Swimming skills not required. CARSON TIGERSHARKS COMPETITIVE SWIM PROGRAM Carson Tigersharks summer league emphasizes stroke technique, racing, and friendships for junior (ages 5-12) and senior (ages 13-18) swimmers. League swimming is the best way to get introduced to the sport of swimming without the high commitment of an elite, year-round club. Leagues run on a seasonal basis, typically 8-12 weeks long, including 2-3 local competitions that run 2-3 hours. Training sessions are about an hour, twice per week. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: One 25yd length of front crawl, one 25yd length of back crawl, comfortable in deep water. CARSON JR VICTORY ROLLERS Indoor Roller Derby! Girls and boys ages 10-17 will learn the basics of flat-track roller derby in a 6 week off-skates program before joining the rest of the team on the track. New participants are not required to have any skates or gear for the first 6 weeks and no skating experience is required. Once on skates, participants will learn how to skate safely, and be taught derby rules and skills. Skaters advance at their own speed to eventually land a spot on the Junior Derby team. Camp Carson is a summer program full of fun and educational activities that will keep your children entertained throughout the workday. Th program runs Monday – Friday from 7:00am – 6:00pm. Check-in time for children is from 7:00am – 9:00am, but you can pick-up your child at any time. Throughout the week, campers will participate in STEAM activities, arts & crafts, swimming, guest speakers, free time, group games, and field trips.

Campers will be divided into age groups, with scheduled activities appropriate for their age group. Additionally, each age group will have a core program they will participate in for 1-2 hours per week throughout the summer. Chipmunks - PBS Afterschool Adventure: This is a collection of multi-media activities that include characters from your favorite PBS KIDS shows.

Battleborns (3rd Grade) - CATCH: Stands for a “Coordinated Approach To Child Health.” This program unites multiple players in a child’s life to create a community of health; introducing fun activities that teach the value of a healthy and active life.
Campers will have the ability to participate in a regional field trip each week. Regional field trips charter school buses, and take campers to locations in Reno, Tahoe, or Douglas County for the majority of the day. Regional field trips are optional and require registration and additional fees. Capital Kids is a before and after school program that takes place every school day during the school year, plus camps held during winter and spring break. Outdoor Program Grant In the summer of 2020, Carson City Parks, Recreation & Open Space received a generous grant of $17,000 from Carson Tahoe Health for the purpose of developing an outdoor education program. While Carson City has some of the Nation’s closest proximity to outdoor recreation, access is still limited for many Carson City residents. This can be due to lack of equipment, educational programming, and affordability. Recreating in the outdoors has proven benefits not only to your physical health, but mental health as well. The grants funds are to be used to specifically create kayaking, backpacking, and snowshoeing opportunities. Check out the many new outdoor programs offered this summer. If there is an outdoor activity you would like to see offered, please let us know. We look forward to helping Carson City be a more active, healthy and happy community through outdoor recreation.
Outdoor Equipment Rentals The Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department now has outdoor equipment available for community rentals. Equipment can be rented at the Robert “Bob” Crowell Multi-Purpose Athletic Center (MAC) during normal business hours. The MAC is not set up for drop-in rentals. Outdoor Programs INTERPRETIVE ACTIVITIES In 1996, Carson City residents voted for the Quality of Life Initiative which created the Open Space program. INTRODUCTION TO BACKPACKING
Have you ever wanted to try backpacking but weren't sure how to get started? This is the perfect experience for you. Each trip begins with a pre-trip preparation class on Monday at 6pm before the trip. You’ll learn how to pack, what to wear, eat, and more. Then, we’ll take you on an overnight backpacking trip utilizing the skills you just learned. Destinations will vary, but all will be approximately 4-6 miles to an alpine lake with low to moderate elevation gain. Backpacks and camping equipment included. While trips are designed for beginners, a moderate fitness level is required. Transportation may be available pending current COVID-19 guidelines. Across the nation, Kids to Parks Day brings thousands of children to local parks to learn about nature and experience outdoor recreation. In Carson City, Kids to Parks Day also marks the first event of our Junior Ranger Program! YAK PACKING OVERNIGHT KAYAK TRIPS “Yak Packing “ is the same idea as backpacking, but instead of carrying all the weight on your back, you carry your gear on a kayak. Fee Increase Notice Due to a recent fee study and adoption of cost recovery rates, some fees for programs and facilities will be increased and new fees added. The below fee schedule was approved by the Carson City Board of Supervisors on 11/5/2020. The majority of the fees will be implemented starting June 1, 2021, though some of the fees, particularly new fees, were implemented in November. Additionally, it was voted that 10% of revenues generated by the Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department will be re-invested in park assets and infrastructure. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding as a majority of the Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department’s fees have not been increased since 2009.
