Deer hunting season closing
The deer hunting season is winding down to a close but the hunting action is picking up quite a bit. The “rut” is usually late in south Louisiana so it’s in full swing. One of the unique types of deer hunting in our area that used to be the norm for deer hunting is those hunters that take to the swamp. We have a couple of hunting clubs that still enjoy the swamp hunting tradition. It takes a hardy soul to tromp our swamps to kill deer in a way that’s unlike any other. Maurepas Wildlife Management Area is a public tract of land that’s available for hunting for those who don’t choose to hunt in a club on leased land. The physical challenges for those that take this task on make the reward all that much more enjoyable. That also lends itself to a different breed of deer as well. They are a little hardier due to the physical demands.

Cory Brignac, of Gonzales, is pictured with one of the swamp bucks he killed this year in Maurepas Wildlife Management Area. Water travel is not an issue for them, so they can slip by a hunter a little easier. It’s just different than the way most deer are hunted. Those who like it wouldn’t do it any other way and those who don’t, you couldn’t pay them enough to do it. One of the swamp hunters I know is pretty successful. Cory Brignac has been tromping the swamps since he was a kid and is accustomed to the rigors of hunt-
ing deer in that environment. He had to walk in the swamp 500 yards to shoot one of his deer but also had to drag it out 500 yards. No four-wheelers here. He’s killed two bucks this year, so I’d say it’s a good year for him. Anybody for some swamp hunting? Lyle Johnson covers sports for The Ascension Advocate.
