Springtime in Canyon Creek

Written by Noemi Quillin owner of Blooming Vistas who lives in and loves Canyon Creek! Photos provided by Noemi Quillin While springtime brings with it the joy of budding trees and flowers and an increase in song filled birds and pollinators, many of us are still mourning the devastation caused by the February winter storm. Not only was it hard on our landscapes but also hard on the damage caused to homes and property. So what should we do for our beloved landscape? Take a deep breath and take inventory of what needs to be replaced and what needs a little nurturing. While making my rounds throughout the neighborhood, I have been encouraged by how many plants are very much alive after the winter storm – even though their appearance may say otherwise right now. What is most significant this season is the importance of hand clipping, tidying, and properly pruning to remove frost burn and damage from the storm. Always remember to fertilize, mulch, and add root stimulator. What you do now will have lasting effects for the remainder of the year as plants work hard to bounce back. 18

If, after careful inspection you determine your landscape is past the point of no return, or you simply do not want to wait for it to bounce back, take it out and start over. Spring is a time of new beginnings and the perfect time to consider updating your landscape. Perhaps you were on the fence for a while and the winter storm helped you decide. There are lots of trees, shrubs, perennials, and annuals that could transform your yard. Shade gardens can be absolutely magnificent and sun gardens equally so – when you select the right plants. Canyon Creek is blessed to have many mature trees, and with it the opportunity to curate gorgeous understory offerings like Japanese maples, yews, camellias, and ferns. Japanese maples are my favorite shade tree with their stunning foliar color change. Evergreens do the heavy lifting in the landscape while annuals cheer things up with their bright pops of color. Whatever your needs, there are plenty of wonderful options waiting for you!
