Mom, three cubs rescued from tree It was a tricky rescue for Conservation officers on Wednesday. They had to use bear bangers, ropes, tarps and tranquilizers to get four bears once captured in Burnaby out of a Lee Avenue tree. Now they get one last shot at staying out of urban areas. by Scott McKenzie editorial@mrtimes.com

aple Ridge Conservation officers rescued a mother black bear and her three cubs from a tree in a backyard on Lee Avenue Wednesday. The rescue brought out the entire neighbourhood, as tranquilized bears were laid out on a front lawn before being loaded into a special container. That gave people of all ages a chance to touch the bears and take video and photographs. Conservation officer Terry Myroniuk estimated the mother bear weighed more than 250 pounds. The mother bear had previously been found in Burnaby in 2008, and Myroniuk said “generally the bears don’t get another chance if they’re caught twice, but we made an exception because she had three cubs with her.” The mother bear was relocated 100 kilometers away from Burnaby but had returned to the area. The four bears had to be tranquilized because they weren’t coming down from the tree voluntarily. After the mother bear and one cub had come down, Conservation officers lit off “bear bangers” in an attempt to scare the remaining two cubs in hopes they would come down. The “bear bangers” caused the two cubs to come halfway down the tree, but were then tranquilized. Normally, Conservation officers would hold a tarp above the ground under the tree in order to catch the bears after tranquilization, but these bears had become stuck in the branches. Since they were stuck, the officers needed to climb the tree and tie up the bears (separately) in order to rope them down with a pulley system. Myroniuk said they weren’t

worried about the bears being severely injured from a fall because there were so many branches that they would hit on the way down. He said that the cubs had been found this past spring, but at that time they were too small to tranquilize without risking their lives. See BEARS, Page 3

Campfire ban finally lifted Campfires are now permitted throughout the Coastal Fire Centre due to a decreased risk of wildfires. Although campfires, fireworks and tiki torches are now permitted, open fires of any other description remain prohibited, including burning barrels. Campfires must not be larger than 0.5 metres wide or 0.5 metres tall. Anyone who lights a campfire must have a hand tool, such as a shovel, or at least eight litres of water nearby to fully extinguish it. Never leave a campfire unattended, and make sure ashes are completely cold to the touch before leaving an area. The rescinding of the campfire ban applies to all BC Parks, Crown and private lands, but does not apply within the boundaries of local governments that have open fire bylaws and are serviced by a fire department. Check with civic authorities for any restrictions before lighting a fire. Anyone found in violation of an open fire ban may be issued a ticket for $345. Should a wildfire occur as a result of recklessness, a person can be fined up to $1 million or spend three years in prison and be ordered to pay all firefighting and associated costs. he provincial government restored $7 million to the B.C. Arts Council last Wednesday, but whether any of that money will get to the cash-strapped arts council in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows remains to be seen. “We’re hopeful they’ll put some money back but we really don’t know at all,” said Lindy Sisson, executive director for the Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows Arts Council. “Hopefully we won’t have a deﬁcit next year.” The new money gives the B.C. Arts Council a budget of $16 million, $3 million less than last year. “It will be up to [the B.C. arts council] where they prioritize its delivery,” said Sisson. “What we want is long-term stable funding.” The $7 million boost to arts is part of the 2010 Sports and Arts Legacy, a $10-million fund. The provincial government announced last July that $3 million from the Legacy fund will go to B.C. Spirit Festivals. The Conservation officers work out of Maple Ridge but cover everywhere from Port Moody to Mission. Myroniuk said bears are common in Maple Ridge because there are a number of creeks and drainages around that make it easy for them to travel without being noticed. He also said Maple Ridge is behind the times a little bit, as cities such as Port Moody and Coquitlam have bylaws preventing people from leaving their garbage out overnight. “Those cities are going to start experimenting with bear-proof bins, as well.” That’s unlike Maple Ridge, where as Myroniuk said, some people tend to leave their garbage out on the street all week long. The bears may have been attracted to the unpicked fruit, as well. Conservation officers found fruit seeds in their droppings. Myroniuk wanted to urge people to remove anything in and around their properties that could attract bears because while they can be re-located, translocation isn’t good for the bears and it is still dangerous to have bears in the community.

rguments concluded Tuesday in the trial of an alleged drug dealer facing charges of sexual assault and conﬁnement with both attorneys painting different pictures of what happened in a Maple Ridge basement suite two years ago. Victor Joseph Reis is on trial in New Westminster Supreme Court, accused of threatening a woman with a sword and baseball bat, choking her and sexually assaulting her. The alleged victim cannot be named due to a publication ban. Both lawyers focused on the credibility and importance of Jim Wagner’s testimony in their ﬁnal submissions to court. Defense attorney Tony Zipp said Wagner’s testimony indicated the alleged victim was calm and showed no signs of wanting to leave the morning after the alleged assault. Crown attorney Winston Sayson countered with Wagner’s initial statement to police in which the witness described the alleged victim as “traumatized” and “upset.” Wagner told the court the alleged victim never said anything about being assaulted, according to Sayson. The crown prosecutor cited a police report in which Wagner said the alleged victim had told him she was assaulted. Sayson also said it was

evidence of the alleged victim’s traumatized condition that: “Wagner interrupted what he was doing and took her to a safe place,” the morning after the alleged assault. According to Zipp, Wagner wasn’t able to continue a repair job because he didn’t have the necessary parts, so there was no interruption. Zipp said before taking the alleged victim to his home Wagner took her to a crack house, an action not fitting someone caring for a traumatized woman. Sayson derided the testimony of Wagner and other defense witnesses who gave more conflicting or more detailed accounts in court than they had to police, calling their testimony: “False, fanciful and fabricated.” Zipp explained the witnesses changing their stories in court with what he called “a ghetto mentality” that involved mistrust for police. Zipp stated everyone who was around the alleged victim before the alleged assault thought, “sex was certainly in the cards.” Zipp said the alleged victim made no complaints until her husband showed up. The defense attorney cited the unreliability of the alleged victim given her “mental difficulties and longstanding addiction problems.” Zipp said the alleged victim said she saw a tattoo of the Virgin Mary and while Reis has tattoos, none of them resemble

the Virgin Mary. Sayson admitted the alleged victim misidentiﬁed Reis’ tattoo, but said she remembered a bat, a sword and a paintball gun with a silencer, all of which were found in the basement suite and were close to the bed. Zipp said only the bat was near the bed, but given the size of the apartment: “Everything was near everything.” The alleged victim described the sword as having engravings, which it did not have. Sayson said the alleged victim’s testimony contained “very unique and unusual details that could not be made up.” Sayson recounted the alleged victim’s testimony, including her statement that she helped Reis remove her pants and told him she wanted to have sex. Sayson said the alleged victim did this: “Because [she knew] it was going to happen anyway.” Zipp cited the alleged victim’s discovery of her husband’s inﬁdelity prior to the alleged assault as a motive for her to want to have sex with Reis. Zipp said it was the alleged victim who asked Reis for his phone number. Zipp said the assault investigation was not instigated by the alleged victim but by the fury and insistence of her husband. Sayson characterized Reis as a predator who “took advantage of what he thought was easy prey.” Defense attorney Zipp

Fans will be able to watch Ridge Meadows Flames games on Internet.

f you can’t make it out to a particular Ridge Meadows Flames Junior B hockey game, don’t worry, just check it out on the Internet. The Ridge Meadows Flames and Play Full Screen announced Thursday an agreement for broadcast coverage of the 2010-11 PIJHL season. The agreement calls for 15 regular season video broadcasts plus playoffs. Dave McIlroy and Play Full Screen will be producing the Internet broadcasts using new software developed by McIlroy’s company,

allowing for live streaming to television, computer or smart phone. McIlroy has been streaming audio and video online for 16 years. Ryan Briggs will be returning behind the microphone for a second season along with colour analyst Brad “Remi” Reminek. Joining the broadcast team as an occasional analyst is

Hockey Now’s Adam Dunfee. Included in this agreement is other Internet-based coverage, including but not limited to the Game Day Preview articles which appear on The Briggs Blog. “It’s really exciting to be taking the broadcasts to the next level by incorporating video this season,” said Flames President and Owner Andrew Ilaender. “I’m very happy to have such a professional broadcaster like Ryan and his team representing our club on air.” Playby-play announcer Ryan Briggs added “in my experience you don’t see the level of commitment from an owner like Andrew Ilaender has for Ridge Meadows. For me personally it is very refreshing and exciting to be a part of this team.” Briggs graduated from Vancouver’s Columbia Academy in 2002 and has worked as a play-by-play announcer for the last eight years. Briggs has previously called games for the Vancouver Canadians, Vancouver Trojans, UBC Thunderbirds and Langley Blaze. Along with his role with the Flames he is also the current voice of B.C. High School Football, a role he has held since 2005. Reminek is a former part owner of the Flames and has been a 27-year official with Hockey B.C. Reminek is a Level 6 official, the highest level amateur rating in Canada, and has officiated in the PIJHL, BCHL and WHL. To see the Flames schedule, check out Sports on Page 36.

The bridge on Kennedy Road will be shut down sometime in early September for approximately 2 months. Pitt Meadows Secondary and Highland Park Elementary students will be advised of alternate route schedules in writing by their bus drivers.

GENERAL INFORMATION In the spring of 2010, families were requested to submit applications to register for school bus service for the upcoming year. Bus routes were developed based on the applications received. If you were unable to submit an application in the spring, it will be necessary to do so as soon as possible. Students not registered may be refused service. Application forms can be picked up from the main reception desk at the District Education Ofﬁce at 22225 Brown Ave., Maple Ridge, or you can contact the Transportation Department at 604-466-6236. Please note that all routes will be reviewed in the fall and may be adjusted or combined where appropriate. We are continuing the practice of maintaining student rosters and seating plans, as they are essential to the protection of your children. The school bus contractor is First Student Canada. Their telephone number is 604-465-5055.

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL On the first day of classes, all schools have their specific early dismissal times and therefore, the homeward bound schedule will not apply for this day. We will endeavor to accommodate the schools as best we can but parents should expect some delays. Families that submitted applications for transportation will have received a letter clarifying their eligibility status. It is important that the student carry this letter on the first day of school as it will be matched against the driver’s roster. Please make sure your child is at the stop at least 5 minutes prior to the scheduled departure time.

BACK TO SCHOOL SALE

Computers taken from nursery Ridge Meadows RCMP are investigating a break, enter, and theft from Triple Tree Nursery. The theft occurred sometime during the night of Monday August 30, or in the early morning hours of Tuesday August 31. A vehicle was driven into the front entrance, allowing the thieves to gain entry to the building. Two computers were stolen, and police have few leads to follow up on. STOLEN POWER LEADS TO POT BUST A residential search warrant for Theft of Telecommunications (B.C. Hydro power) has resulted in the seizure of 320 marijuana plants, and proposed charges of production of a controlled substance against a 47-year-old Maple Ridge man. Ridge Meadows RCMP’s Marijuana Enforcement Team, and the Street Enforcement Unit, entered the home on Rothsay Street in Maple Ridge just after 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday September 1. After seizing the marijuana plants, which were in varying stages of growth, the man was held in custody for a hearing before a justice.

TEENAGER HITS CURB WHILE IMPAIRED A 19-year-old Maple Ridge woman is facing impaired driving charges after hitting a concrete curb with her 2000 Volkswagon bug in the early morning hours of Thursday September 2. At approximately 2:25 a.m. the woman hit the curb at the Meadowvale mall in Pitt Meadows. The force of the collision engaged the airbags inside the vehicle. The female driver was kept on scene by citizens and members of the joint lower mainland Integrated Gang Task Force, for Ridge Meadows RCMP to respond. The young woman showed signs of being impaired by alcohol, so she was taken to Coquitlam RCMP Detachment, where samples of her breath were analyzed at more than twice the legal limit. The suspect was later released from custody, but will have to attend Port Coquitlam Provincial Court to answer to the charges.

Get involved in Albion plan

aple Ridge is looking at using Twitter and possibly Facebook as part of its Albion area concept plan process. This social media would go along with public meetings, a forum and something called a charrette. The charrette will consist of selected participants (nominated by stakeholders) spending two days (Oct. 20 and 21) working with designers in developing a concept plan. There will be stakeholders meetings on Sept. 7th and 8th followed by a community forum at The ACT on Wednesday, Sept. 29 from 5-9 p.m. What all this means is that there are a lot of events and ways to get involved and be involved in forming a plan for this area. So there’s no excuse for not getting involved if you care about the future of this important piece of our community. There’s a lot at stake with Albion. People need to come to the table with fresh ideas and an open mind, as in more than simply yelling “we need more shopping.” Let’s get creative. Let’s do more than just follow it on Twitter. That’s a cute gimmick, but there are plenty of public events to take part in to give your ideas. Let’s come up with a plan that our community can be proud of.

Everyone working in B.C. has the right to a safe workplace. Not everyone has one, however, as the families of five workers on a Langley mushroom plant found out two years ago. Three men were killed, two left severely disabled, in a toxic event in a small room. Charges were laid Monday against four supervisors or company directors, but the charges can only indirectly protect other workers. Too many workers in B.C. don’t know their own rights. They may not have much education. They may not speak English as their first language, or at all. They may simply be too young to worry about risking life or limb. Those vulnerable workers are more likely to be taking exactly the jobs where poor safety precautions can be fatal. The B.C. government should make it a priority to crack down on unsafe employers from Tsawwassen to the Peace River. Fines should be hefty, and they should be levied before anyone is buried. There needs to be more outreach — in more languages, in more venues, and more often. Perhaps some of the budget dedicated to telling us how great things are going could be put aside for this purpose. But workers can’t trust the government to do everything for them. They need to stand up and fight for their own rights. B.C.’s dwindling unions could be a big part of this, if they would look outside their traditional bailiwicks and try to aid workers in casual, part-time jobs or in smaller workplaces. We also hope that good employers, the ones who do try to keep their workers safe, will be speaking out on this issue, and helping to shame their less-ethical colleagues into acting better. Re: Grant De Patie’s killer Darnell Pratt This is an absolutely devastating and heartbreaking situation for both families. I hope the De Paties can ﬁnd some peace in their hearts. This case is also disturbing for our society. Darnell is now villainized, having crossed the line from victim to perpetrator. He was once a child who needed saving. Darnell is very likely an example of a person brain injured due to prenatal exposure to alcohol and neglect and trauma. To have the expectation that this individual will show the appropriate level of remorse and reform and become a good citizen, although reasonable, is unrealistic. Darnell will not likely be able to function successfully outside of an institution without intense supervision and support. Our systems are not set up to ensure he, or other fetal alcohol disordered, neglected or traumatized individuals, receives the supervision necessary to be successful by our societal deﬁnition. There is no excusing the behaviour of Darnell or other criminals; however, there needs to be understanding of the why’s for such behaviour. We as a society need to see that Darnell is another example to us all of the importance of supporting our pregnant women to have an alcohol-free pregnancy, a pregnancy free

Before “white men” and modern gear arrived on our coast many, many millions of fish ascended the Fraser and tributaries year after year, for thousands of years. Likely with ups and downs, none of it the fault of government, the DFO or of any human fishing activity. So if I get Cummins right, restraint in harvesting sockeye in 2006 has nothing to do with the 2010 run? And a wonderfully strong return this year is all DFO’s fault. Will restraint in harvesting sockeye in 2007, 2008, and 2009 yield strong returns in 2011, 2012 and 2013? Let’s hope so. Cummins doesn’t seem to know but would scoop the fish even if there was not enough ice, closed fish processing plants etc. all the case as Crey noted. Then MP Randy Kamp sends out a mailer asking voters if judges sitting on Canada’s Supreme Court need to speak French. Doh, has he never heard of the Quebec Civil Code? If he hasn’t, shame on me for letting him get elected. If he has, shame on him for the unwarranted provocation of Canadian citizens in Quebec. Every time we turn a blind eye to any form of abuse, or minimize the impact alcohol consumption has during pregnancy, we are participating in perpetuating the cycles of abuse and ultimately, the demise of our society. For Grant, Darnell and all the other victims, let’s work together to put a stop to fetal alcohol disorders and abuse.

Locals create manual of parade tips Local volunteer parade organizers have been hard at work in partnership with Parks and Leisure Services to create a parade resource manual. The manual is a result of research into safe event planning that included collaboration with local volunteer event organizers, neighbouring municipalities, engineering, RCMP, risk managers and the ﬁre department. The largest parades in the area are the Pitt Meadows Day Parade in June

and the Santa Claus Parade in December. Both of the events’ organizers provided insight into the parade planning process. “Planning a community day takes a lot of preparation and dedication,” says Christine Wood, a Pitt Meadows Day parade organizer who helped create the resource guide. “It’s also lots of fun and you get to meet some great people along the way.” Parks and Leisure Services is pleased to have this manual

available to the public as a legacy of the shared knowledge and experience in our community. The parade resource manual is available at www.mapleridge.ca and www. pittmeadows.bc.ca in the event resource section. A wealth of information and resources for event planners is available at both websites in addition to the parade resource manual. Alert citizen spots an impaired driver, calls police to catch him A call to Ridge Meadows RCMP from a citizen resulted in police taking an impaired driver off our roads. Just before 2:00 a.m. on Tuesday August 31, 2010 the citizen noticed a vehicle being driven erratically on Lougheed Highway. A

general duty ofﬁcer located the vehicle in the 22700 block, pulling it over near 222 Street. The 49-year-old Maple Ridge man driving showed several signs of being impaired by alcohol, so he was brought back to the Ridge Meadows RCMP

Detachment, where samples of his breath were analyzed at three times the legal limit. MEN TRY TO STEAL DEBIT Ridge Meadows RCMP are looking for 2 males who attempted to steal a debit machine and assaulted an employee while making an

escape. The two thieves entered the Shoppers Drug Mart, which is located in the Westgate shopping mall, at approximately 9:40 p.m. on Monday August 30, 2010. An employee saw the pair attempting to steal a debit card machine. As the

employee apprehended one of the suspects, his partner struck the employee and the duo were able to run out of the store. They were last seen running southbound through the parking lot, toward Lougheed Highway. The suspects are described

as both being white males, and they were clean-shaven. The one who did the assault stood ﬁve foot eight, 140 pounds, bald, with two tattoos.He was wearing a black, sleeveless, t-shirt, and dark jeans. His partner is six feet, 185 pounds.

Most Wanted The Ridge Meadows RCMP warrants attached to these individuals were outstanding as of 10 a.m. Thursday. If anyone has information on the whereabouts these individuals, call the detachment at 463-6251 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

The heritage building at 12229 Harris Road is going to be, as of Tuesday, Sept. 7, the second location for the Bergthorson Academy of Musical Arts. In addition to moving to Struthers House, the music academy will continue to operate at its original location at Unit 21, 22621 Lougheed Highway. At the music academy, students of all ages and abilities from Pitt Meadows, west Maple Ridge, Port Coquitlam, and surrounding areas

Budstock to honour Pitt music fan

Dozens of Vancouver’s best known and most popular blues entertainers are banding together for a memorial concert for Pitt Meadows resident Bud Rogers. A well-known music fan and supporter of the local blues community, Rogers passed away unexpectedly on Aug. 15. More than 40 of the Lower Mainland’s best blues musicians and singers, including Jack Lavin, Russell Jackson, Leslie Harris, Jerry Adolphe, and many more, will gather at the historic Fort Pub in Fort Langley on Sunday, Sept. 5, from 3 p.m. to midnight, to play their music and pay their respects to Bud Rogers and his family. Rogers was not only a dedicated music fan, but was also a very devoted family man who passed his love for music along to his son,

STRUTHERS, From Page 15 In 2005, Bergthorson and her partner Robert Hornsey opened their ﬁrst music school at their Maple Ridge facility, where music lessons in voice and all instruments continue to be offered. The music academy’s original location is currently being renovated to include two more studios as well as additional seating space. “Things are hopping,” said Bergthorson, who is thrilled about soon being part of the Pitt Meadows community. The Struthers House underwent extensive renovations after being hit by an arsonist in March. The city-owned house used to be the location of the Ridge Meadows Women’s Centre and then was used by the Katzie First Nation to store archeological artifacts until the ﬁre. The house was built in 1931 by William Struthers Jr. who lived there until his death in 1970. The City of Pitt Meadows bought the house in 1994. It is a protected property on the Pitt Meadows Heritage Registry and is listed on

Regarding his father’s contributions to his own musical development and to the blues community at large, James remembers, “He had a passion for music his entire life, he played the drums and introduced me to music, he supported me musically my whole life above and beyond what anyone would expect, so much that he was with me at the Yale Hotel hours before he passed. We are doing ‘Budstock’ because his life was music and he touched so many in the industry, blues was the roots for him. He made many friends in the music industry and even though he didn’t play after I started in the music business, he made an impression on many musicians as if he did play. He was more popular at my gigs than I was.” The pub is at 9273 Glover Rd., Fort Langley.

Oatmeal bar great for breakfast

ith the start of another school season, almost everyone’s lives become a bit more hectic — the increased traffic on the road is a perfect example of this. Store bought, premade breakfast bars are not always the healthiest solution to breakfasts on the run, so I want to share this recipe made with whole wheat flour, oatmeal, and ground flax. Make them ahead of time and freeze each of the

sixteen bars individually. For those hurried mornings, microwave one bar on high for 30 seconds, and you are out the door with warm oatmeal in your hand. Yes, the recipe does have butter in it for moisture and tenderness, but remember this makes sixteen bars: that’s only just over two teaspoons of butter per bar. I hope this recipe will take a bite out of your busy mornings. Oatmeal Breakfast Bars

Recipe created by Chef Dez/ Gordon Desormeaux “The benefit of oatmeal in a convenient bar. Great for Breakfast on the run - Microwave each bar from frozen for 30 seconds on high power.” Makes 16 bars 2 1/4 (two and a quarter) cups whole wheat flour 2 1/4 (two and a quarter) cups quick oats 3/4 (three quarters) cup raisins 3 tbsp ground flax seed

1 1/2 (one and one half) tsp baking soda 1 1/2 (one and one half) tsp cinnamon 1 tsp salt 3/4 (three quarters) cup butter, room temperature 1/2 (one half) cup Splenda Brown Sugar Blend 1 cup unsweetened apple sauce 1 1/2 (one and one half) tsp vanilla extract 2 eggs 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and prepare a 9 x 13

inch cake pan with baking spray. Tip: Line the pan with parchment paper leaving the ends sticking out to make the uncut product easier to remove from the pan once cooled. 2. Combine the whole wheat flour, quick oats, raisins, ground flax seed, baking soda, ground cinnamon, and salt in a mixing bowl. 3. Beat the butter and Splenda Brown Sugar Blend together in a separate bowl. 4. Add the apple sauce, vanilla extract and eggs to the butter and Splenda/ butter mixture. Continue beating until thoroughly combined. 5. Combine the mixtures in the two bowls together. It will be a very thick batter. 6. Press the mixture evenly into the prepared pan. 7. Bake for 18-22 minutes until firm. 8. Cool in the pan until room temperature - it is important for it to set up firm enough to cut into bars. 9. This was to be a lifelong lesson of the importance of slowly, gradually, a small amount at a time. We are likely to befriend those who make little of their problems. Making little of the problems of life is a welcome antidote to those who make too much of them. So often today people are inclined to exaggerate their anger, to become outraged when they should be simply annoyed. It is a strength of the language that it allows us to describe something big by saying ‘not a little’. At Christmas we sing ‘O little town of Bethlehem!’ and bring that distant desert place into our homes and lives. Carl Jung wrote of “The little world of childhood. . .” and Isaiah tells us that “The wolf shall dwell with the lamb. . . and a little child shall lead them.” Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of Sherlock Holmes, observed that it was his belief that “the little things are inﬁnitely the most important.” and many a writer has drawn attention to those seemingly unimportant little moments that add their quiet riches to our lives. This year’s theme was the “Best Green Photo of Summer 2010” and the first prize was claimed by Kyle Falconer of Pitt Meadows with a shot of Alouette River at dusk (right). The contest is the idea of Greener Steps founder Alex Sangha. It aims to generate greater public interest about the environment, sustainability and greener living, through a series of thematic photo contests. There’ll be room for another 2,000 riders daily on the West Coast Express this fall by the time seven new Trans-Link railcars are in place. The ﬁrst two bi-level cars, built by Bombardier in Thunder Bay, Ont., and each costing $3.25 million, were unveiled Thursday and will be in service early next month. The remaining ﬁve are expected to arrive early in October and will be carrying passengers by mid-month. The West Coast Express, which began in 1995, recorded cost-recovery of 86.3 per cent in 2009, compared to 75.6 per cent in 2005. Ridership has doubled to about 10,500 daily. But commuter rail won’t be the answer for the $1.4-billion Evergreen Line rapid-transit project, which has been stalled so long it’s being called the Nevergreen Line Both federal and provincial governments

have committed to the connection between Lougheed Town Centre and Coquitlam City Centre at a cost of $827 million. But TransLink doesn’t have its $400-million share of Evergreen, which is scheduled to use SkyTrain technology. B.C. Transportation Minister Shirley Bond calls the Evergreen Line “absolutely essential.” Although tracks are already in place for commuter rail, she doesn’t think it should supplant a SkyTrain Evergreen service. “It’s not about either-or,” said Bond Thursday. “I think you need as many choices...as you can possibly provide. “One of the challenges we face with the WCE is we are running a commuter rail service on an operating freight railway line,” she added. But so does GO Transit in Ontario, which uses CN and CPR freight lines in addition to its own track to carry 180,000 passengers on 491 bi-level railcars similar to the ones used by the WCE.

Hockey Hall of Famer Cam Neely, U.S. college coaches Jack Parker and Jerry York and American Hockey League president David Andrews have been named recipients of the 2010 Lester Patrick Trophy for outstanding service to hockey in the United States. The award honours the memory of Lester Patrick, who spent 50 years in hockey as a player, coach and general manager. Neely, who grew up in Maple Ridge and starred as a junior for the WHL’s Portland Winter Hawks, went on to be recognized as one of the top power forwards in NHL history. Though cut short by injury, his career was prolific — he scored 395 goals with 299 assists and 1,241 penalty minutes in 726 regular season games and scored 57 more goals in 93 playoff games. Neely, who was drafted by the Vancouver Canucks in 1983, went on to star for the Boston Bruins and scored 50 goals in a season three times. Neely is currently president of the Bruins.

Daniel Amesbury is no stranger to throwing punches at the opposition, and his bruised knuckles show he doesn’t miss very often. And while the Abbotsford Pilots defenceman has no problem lighting a ﬁre under his teammates with his scrappy nature, his latest jab might start a slow burn with the coaching staff of the Ridge Meadows Flames, his former team. Amesbury, a Maple Ridge boy who was traded by the Flames to the Pilots in June for blueliner Sean Kavanagh, let a barrage of verbal haymakers loose on the coaching philosophy of his old squad on Tuesday, perhaps lighting the spark under what has been a tumultuous longtime rivalry between the Paciﬁc International Junior Hockey League clubs. “I like the coaching [in Abbotsford], it seems like they take things a lot more seriously around here and they actually want to win,” Amesbury said after Tuesday’s practice at MSA Arena. “Where I was before, it didn’t feel like that. I didn’t get that vibe and the coaching wasn’t there.” Amesbury, who will be 20 years old in November, didn’t stop there, either. “It was nothing compared

I operate mine by being honest with the guys and being upfront. Everybody operates theirs different and I believe in that so that’s the way I operate.” Amesbury also had no problem relaying his thoughts about being the Flames go-to tough guy for the last two seasons. Kavanagh, also a 20-yearold defenceman, had 13 goals and 29 assists for 42 points last season with Abbotsford. But, as Amesbury will tell you, he’s just happy to be a Pilot. “I’m just glad to get out of Ridge Meadows, the coaching is a lot better here and I think we’re going to do well and I think we can win it all this year.” Eaton said “[Amesbury]’s entitled to his opinion and if that’s how he feels then he’s allowed to feel that way.”
