Foam fingered for kill Runoff from Burnaby house fire likely cause of Byrne Creek pollution Jennifer Moreau staff reporter

Byrne Creek streamkeepers are, yet again, counting dead fish after another chemical spill in the creek. This time, it appears to be linked to a fire upstream. Streamkeeper Paul Cipywnyk got a call from fellow volunteers around 9 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 28, reporting foam in the creek in a ravine near Southridge Drive. Cipywnyk went further upstream only to find a pond with lots of foam and roughly a dozen dead trout and coho. Volunteer streamkeepers looked around the neighbourhood and saw a fire truck near Kingsway and 16th Avenue, where there had been a house fire. “We asked the firefighters if they’d used foam, and they said yes, a full load from one of their trucks. The drainage flow from the site of the fire into storm drains was evident,” Cipywnyk reported. “Streamkeepers are certainly not going to question firefighters for doing an outstanding job in ensuring the safety of the community. It’s just unfortunate if this is confirmed as the source of the kill.” The streamkeepers are estimating several hundred fish have perished, and the spill could mean another total kill for the creek, whose fish Creek Page 3

They may have kicked their final soccer ball at Swangard Stadium, but the Vancouver Whitecaps are keeping at least one local tie to Burnaby. On Monday morning, Whitecaps FC announced that local video game giant Electronic Arts has inked a deal to become their official video game partner. EA Sports has similar deals with major European clubs like Chelsea, Arsenal and Real Madrid, but the Whitecaps are their first North American soccer club to team up with the company. “We’re thrilled to join Whitecaps FC as a Founding Partner, as they enter into their inaugural season in MLS,” said EA Sports vice president and general manager of soccer Matt Bilbey in a prepared statement. “EA Sports has a long history of supporting soccer clubs internationally, and with the success of MLS, it’s the perfect time to bring this support to North America at the club level.” Electronic Arts Page 4

Eight residents escape home blaze Andrew Fleming staff reporter

An old wooden home in the Metrotown area was destroyed by fire early Sunday morning. Flames were already shooting from a basement window and smoke had reached the third floor by the time firefighters arrived at the home in the 7300-block of 16th Avenue around 2 a.m., according to Burnaby Assistant Fire Chief Mark Wilson. “The fire travelled up the wall somehow and got into the third floor before firefighters could get any water on it,” said Wilson.

Eight residents of the 91-year-old threestory home, including the owner, escaped without injury. Social service agencies are currently helping the residents find temporary shelter. The RCMP and fire investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire, which Wilson described as “suspicious, until we can determine what caused it.” Wilson described the dwelling as a “hoarders’ type of a house” with 11 vehicles in the yard, including a flatbed trailer loaded with tires, which made putting out the blaze more complicated. “So it was a difficult fire to fight because of

all the debris around,” he said. However, an anonymous person claiming to be a resident of the building disputed Wilson’s claim on The Province’s website, saying most of the vehicles instead belonged to a residence next door. “The 11 vehicles were not in our yard,” wrote someone calling themselves “retox,” who claimed the property’s yard only had a total of three vehicles parked on it. Retox added that three pets were still missing as of early Monday morning. – with files from Jack Keating, The Province. Lake, and there’s no detrimental effect to the fish,” he said. But, whatever was mixed in the run-off from the house fire is a mystery. “It’s undetermined what’s in that house. It’s a total wreck of a house, and there’s all sorts of a number of things stored in that house – paints and thinner and who know what else is in there, ... it’s like a hoarders’ house,” he said. “We’ve taken extreme measures to make sure (our foam is) non toxic (and) biodegradable.” Wilson said the building is

being torn down. “Basically, it’s a toxic hazard waste site right now,” he said. As for the streamkeepers, Cipywnyk isn’t sure what will happen next. “There’s not much we can do. The fish are dead, and it’s very unfortunate. For the second year, the Burnaby Teachers’ Association is working to keep Burnaby’s homeless warm this winter. The campaign is called Sock it to Poverty, and the teachers are collecting new socks, knitted scarves and toques, toiletries and even cash for the homeless

As well, we suspect, people are just overworked and the department understaffed.

But whether the problems are in political leadership, or lack thereof, pushback in bureaucracy, staff changeover or a failure to simply follow through – there is simply no adequate excuse for failing to complete this project. Children depend upon us and the government for protection. They don’t get to vote out the government that has failed them. It’s time to fix this.

Your article (You’ll fork out more to live, play in Burnaby, Burnaby NOW, Nov 24) contained a misleading statement when it said that “The Burnaby Girls Soccer Club in particular indicated it would be able to accommodate a fee in its budget, according to a parks department report.” It is true that we have budgeted a specific amount at the beginning of our season to accommodate this user fee because we knew it was imminent. There is not much one or more user groups can do to stop fee increases. To hold out and not pay would mean the loss of fields to our club and to our girls. increased from about 15,000 since the Liberals took office. That fact got me thinking back to my college economics class that stated, as I recall, if you increase supply of a commodity, you lower the price people will pay for it. Wouldn’t increasing the supply of temporary foreign workers lower the wages of all workers? Upon further investigation, I discovered that Welcome B.C. was actually misleading me. True, in 2000 about 15,000 foreign workers were employed in B.C., but the 2009 number was actually over 69,000. Over nine years the number of foreign workers in B.C. increased four-and-a-half times, yet minimum wages remained stubbornly at $8, the lowest in Canada. Digging even further I learned that Ontario, with a minimum wage of $10.25 barely doubled their dependency on foreign workers over the same period. Clearly, it is not lack of demand in B.C. that keeps minimum wages depressed, but

employers’ and government’s preference to choose foreign labour over Canadian residents. Aside from updating their website, the government should stop subsidizing business with foreign labour and take care of minimum wage earners that make British Columbia their permanent home. There doesn’t seem to be any problem with having such carts operate on the streets and sidewalks of downtown Vancouver, so I can’t understand why there would be a problem in Burnaby. It seems to me that unless the city can come up with a good reason not to do so, it should change its regulations to allow such operations with adequate and proper controls and regulation. Garth M. is seriously diluted under the proposed change to make all ridings equal when it came to voting. The proposed voting method (which is by no means guaranteed to get the required two-thirds support to pass at a rules convention) also penalizes an “outsider” like Clark, who has not been active in the party for more than five years. While she no doubt still has ties with a lot of members, her rivals have had more time to cement their own relations with the people who will be voting. The voting proposal is also based on a preferential ballot, so voters will rank the candidates. As I understand it, if there is no clear winner on the first ballot, the bottom-ranked candidate (and maybe more) is dropped and those who voted for that candidate will have their second-choice votes redis-

tributed among the surviving candidates. Then another candidate is dropped, and the second-choice votes of that candidate are redistributed, and so on until a winner emerges. So a candidate who can command a lot of second-choice support has a distinct advantage. Candidates who pointedly shun one side of the coalition in favour of wooing support from the other side risk losing that second-choice support. This may favour someone like Abbott, whose low-key, likeable demeanour may translate into wider support among those not willing to make him their first choice. It may also penalize someone like Falcon, whose aggressive, take-no-prisoners approach may cost him valuable second-choice support. Now, having said all this, it’s important to

remember another key factor that will help ultimately determine the outcome. Members will keep an eye on polls that show which of the candidates has the strongest support among the general public. And this is where Clark may hold the edge. The so-called “freeenterprise coalition” has historically always been able to choose someone who can keep the party in power. Unlike the NDP, which tears itself apart with ideological debates over policies and issues, the coalition ranks having power as its chief reason for existence. It has lost only three times in almost 60 years. Party members will keep that stat in mind when they vote on Feb. 26, and that could trump all other considerations. Burnaby residents will get a chance to weigh in on Metro Vancouver’s growth strategy this week. The regional growth plan, titled Metro Vancouver 2040: Shaping Our Future, is scheduled to be the subject of a public hearing at the Metro Vancouver head office in Burnaby on Thursday, Dec. 2. Metro Vancouver released its regional growth strategy draft plan earlier this fall. The new plan would replace the Liveable Region Strategic Plan, which was adopted in 1996. The growth strategy pinpoints five primary goals: providing a clear urban footprint to prevent urban sprawl; ensuring enough land for housing and plans for affordable housing in each municipality; protecting industrial land; keeping new development near transit centres; and reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the region. The primary issue has been establishing what should fall under the regional government’s jurisdiction and what should be handled by municipalities, according to Mayor Derek Corrigan. “We’ve worked hard on this for the last four years and believe we have found the

right balance between what needs to be solved regionally and what issues are best left up to individual municipalities,” he said in a Metro Vancouver press release. One of the elements of this particular balancing act was determining how industrial land use should be regulated, and which government body should regulate it. The current edition of the plan has changed since a draft was put forward in February 2009, which gave the regional government more control of industrial land use. The policy was changed in the newest draft. Another issue brought forth in the newest version of the regional plan was future transit projects. The plan proposes that rapid transit for Surrey be the next priority project for TransLink, after the Evergreen SkyTrain Line is completed. The plan is intended to accommodate the additional one million residents expected in the region by 2040, according to the Metro Vancouver press release. “If all goes well, we will have a new strategy in place early in 2011,” Corrigan said. The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Thursday in the second-floor boardroom at Metro Vancouver’s head office, at 4330 Kingsway.

As MLAs begin endorsing their choices for the next Liberal leader, Burnaby’s Harry Bloy is staying mum until more candidates step forward, likely from outside party ranks. “I’m waiting,” said the Burnaby Lougheed MLA. “I have all respect to my colleagues, but I’m probably leaning towards someone who is not sitting right now, so we’re probably going to hear more names come out this week.” Bloy wouldn’t say whom exactly, only that he’s waiting and that the leadership race is a chance for party renewal. “I think we need a leader that’s going to maybe change direction slightly to bring in a different look, and I think that person is out there, and I’m waiting for them to announce they are going to run in the campaign,” he said. Funding for TransLink’s portion of the Evergreen Line will not be determined until spring 2011. The province has given TransLink additional time to come up with funding for major projects after Metro Vancouver’s board of directors voted unanimously against increasing property taxes. Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Shirley Bond told the mayors’ council that TransLink has until the spring to arrange its portion of funding for the projects, according to Peter Fassbender, mayor of the City of Langley and chair of the regional mayors’ council on transportation. TransLink’s mayors’ council, which includes Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan, was planning to vote on the supplemental plan for funding major transit projects at its Dec. 9 meeting. But TransLink’s board of directors voted Friday against increasing the taxes. “The GVRD has to sign on the dotted line,” Corrigan said regarding financial decisions, adding the regional government is responsible for TransLink’s debt. He questioned the province’s extension, saying the government was concerned about a standoff with the mayors. “They’re putting the best spin on it,” he said. “At the point where there was a showdown, the province backed down.”

The fire that damaged Horizons restaurant came at a terrible time, just before the busy summer season, but restaurant spokesperson Geoffrey Howes can still see the positive side of the disaster. “The restaurant was in need of updating,” says Howes, director of operations for Toseki Entertainment Ltd., the restaurant’s parent company. Horizons, at 100 Centennial Way on Burnaby Mountain, was built in 1986 and was slated for a number of upgrades before the fire. The company turned the need to repair damage from the blaze into an opportunity to renovate the entire restaurant. Horizons suffered major damage on the right side of the building as well as the entrance, roof and back of the building, due to a fire last April. A Burnaby teen is onstage with Carousel Theatre’s Seussical The Musical this month. Lucas Testini, a Grade 12 student at Burnaby North Secondary, is in the cast for Carousel’s holiday favourite, which runs Dec. 4 to Jan. 1 at the Waterfront Theatre on Granville Island. It’s Lucas’s third time in the Seussical cast and his second time appearing as a Wickersham Monkey. Make sure that your child knows that there will be a chat about school in the evening. Conversations do not include one-word answers and half-hearted attempts at discussion. A productive two-way conversation should start with open-ended questions: for example, “How do you feel about receiving your report card?” “Why do you feel this way?” • Get to know your child’s teachers. Children should be eating four to eight servings, depending on their age. This is an ongoing challenge for some people, so to assist you I have gathered some helpful tips. The first and most important direction to lead you in is to ensure that you are buying fruits and vegetables in the first place. One helpful tip is to buy the recommended serving amounts for each member of your family for number of days you are shopping for. For example, if you are a family of four and shopping to get you through the next three days, you would need to buy a total of 84 servings of fruit and vegetables combined, based on an average of seven servings each. Purchase these first and build your meals based on these initial produce selections. An easy way to incorporate fresh spinach with every meal is to serve every piece of chicken or fish on a bed of sautéed spinach leaves. Heat a pan over medium heat with a very small amount of olive oil, add a large handful of clean, fresh spinach leaves and season with salt and pepper. If sandwiches are a meal item that you have regularly, then make sure you always have fresh lettuce, tomato and onions on hand. A Mediterranean flair can also be added by

There’s a delicious way to ward off cold winter chills this month. Bombay Bhel offers a cozy atmosphere and the warm and complex flavours of East Indian cuisine. Bombay Bhel co-owner Ron Modi said the colder months are the busiest time of year for the Hastings Street eatery. One of the reasons is that Canadians gravitate toward spicy foods in the winter. The rich curries are seasonal comfort food. “In Canada, we eat salads in the summer,” he said. “Ironically, (East) Indians don’t care, they eat hot food in hot weather.” Modi and his business partner Ed Madon opened Bombay

Get medieval: Joaquin Ayala of Burnaby is a medieval

instrumentalist who’s on stage this month with Winter Harp.

Winter Harp takes the stage A medieval instrumentalist from Burnaby is onstage this month with Winter Harp. Winter Harp, nominated for B.C. Touring Artist of the Year in 2008, is an ensemble featuring harps, medieval instruments, flute, percussion, poetry and song. The musicians, in medieval attire, perform a collection of music from well-known carols to Celtic, medieval and world music. Among their ranks is Burnaby’s Joaquin Ayala, who plays a selection of medieval instruments – nyckelharpa, bass psaltery, symphoni and organistrum. He is joined by Celtic harpist and singer Janelle Nadeau, singer Caroline Markos, flutist Jeff Pelletier, percussionist Lauri Lyster, classical harpist Scott Hughes and narrator Ron Halder. The group’s Christmas tour is currently underway, with performances having taken place in Harrison Hot Springs and Sechelt, with a Winnipeg concert on Friday. Winter Harp is onstage this Sunday, Dec. 5 at Massey Theatre in New Westminster, in a 2:30 p.m. concert with the Vancouver Welsh Men’s Choir. Tickets are $25 and can be bought by calling 604-8781190 or 604-521-5050. The Winter Harp tour then moves to the Island, with concerts in Courtenay, Victoria, Nanaimo and Duncan, before moving back to the Lower Mainland for performances in North Vancouver on Dec. 15 and 16 and Maple Ridge on Dec. 19. Aunt this weekend Leah’s Society has opened its annual Christmas tree lot in Burnaby at Royal Oak and Rumble. If you buy a Christmas tree from Aunt Leah’s, proceeds go to the society, which helps youth in foster care from becoming homeless and young aboriginal moms keep custody of their kids. Aunt Leah’s tree lot is at 7405 Royal Oak at Rumble Street. It’s open Monday to Thursday, 1 to 9 p.m., and Friday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. 2. Get lit up: North Burnaby is getting into the holiday mood on Saturday with Light Up the Heights. There will be strolling carollers and surprise visit from a Christmas guest from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Christmas tree lighting ceremony is from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Heights Fountain Square (Hastings and MacDonald). Engine: What caused it to fall? continued from page 25

TOM: I don’t think the engine fell out, Robyn. But it could have fallen down. RAY: You really can’t run over the engine and see it bouncing down the road behind you. It’s too massive. The car wouldn’t be able to go over it. The car would have to flip over it in order to separate itself from the engine. TOM: Here’s what probably happened. The engine and transmission are held in a cradle, or sub-frame, that’s bolted to the chassis of the car. For some reason, that cradle failed. RAY: And when the engine and transmission assembly dropped down,

it probably tore out the power steering lines, stalled the engine (which killed the power brakes), and the roadway probably sheared off the oil pan, which is a black thing that could have been rounded off in the process, and then bounced down the road. TOM: It’s very unusual to see the bolts that hold the sub-frame fail. They’re massive. But it’s within the realm of possibility that they corroded due to a dozen-plus years of winter road salt. Or maybe the sub-frame itself corroded and broke? RAY: Another possibility is that someone removed the cradle to do some

work and didn’t properly retighten those bolts. If you had any major undercar work done (engine, transmission, rack and pinion) in the past year or so, that could have required those bolts to be removed. And if they weren’t retightened completely, over time they could have loosened up, worked their way out, until … ba da bing! TOM: Well, it’s all oil under the bridge now, Robyn. Young Rebel to Junior team camp Burnaby’s Ryan Nugent-Hopkins was one of 39 players invited to Canada’s national junior hockey team selection camp. The 17-year-old Red Deer Rebels centre is the youngest forward selected and one of just four draft eligible skaters on the camp roster. The four-day camp will take place at the MasterCard Centre in Toronto from Dec. 12 to 15. Three returning junior players – Jared Cowen of Spokane, Oshawa’s Calvin de Haan and Ryan Ellis of

Windsor – helped Canada win a silver medal at last year’s world junior championships. In addition, 34 of the invited players named to the camp were taken in the last two NHL drafts, including 18 first-round selections and four second-round picks. The players will take part in two intrasquad games on Dec. 12 and 13. They will then face the Canadian university national team on Dec. 14. The final 22-man roster will be named at the conclusion of the camp

on Dec. 15. A 17-year-old has not been selected to the junior national team since Sidney Crosby was picked in 2004. Since then, Canada has won five of six world junior titles, including five consecutive gold medals from 2005 to 2009. Canada lost last year’s gold by a score of 6-5 in overtime to the United States. This year’s world junior tournament will be held in Buffalo, New York.

The Simon Fraser University women’s basketball team had its 11-game winning streak snapped by Metro State College. SFU suffered its first defeat of the season following a 73-62 defeat to the Roadrunners in Denver, Colorado Nov. 27. The last loss for the 3-1 Clan was a 63-61 defeat to the University of Victoria back in February. “We came out extremely flat and because of our depth this season we need everyone to show up to have success,” said SFU head coach Bruce Langford in a press release. “We were badly out-rebounded again, and you can’t be tentative for a second against aggressive people.” On the Friday, SFU got by Western State College 83-79 in the opening game of the Metro State Thanksgiving Classic. In that game, Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe posted a third consecutive doubledouble, finishing 12-of16 from the floor with 28 points and 14 rebounds. SFU earned the win despite being out-rebounded 31-6 on the offensive glass and 50-39 overall. Guard Carla Wyman scored a career-high 17 points, while Amonda Francis, with 13 points, and Kristina Collins, with 11, also finished in double figures for the Clan. Goalie gets recall to AHL Two solid outings with Greenville of the East Coast Hockey League have earned Brian Stewart a recall back to the American Hockey League. The Burnaby goaltender was called back to Adirondack on Sunday, following the Phantoms’ 40 loss to the Hershey Bears on Saturday. Stewart’s posted two wins in three games with Greenville since he was loaned to the AA club from Adirondack on Nov. 18. In his last outing in Greenville, Stewart made 33 saves in a 6-2 win over the Kalamazoo Wings on Nov. 26.

Former FC Gold Pride forwards Christine Sinclair of Burnaby and Brazilian star striker Marta are the two top free agents in Womens Professional Soccer. Marta, the four-time FIFA world player of the year and two-time WPS MVP, led the league with 19 goals in 2010. Sinclair, Canada’s star forward, registered 10 goals and nine assists in her second WPS season. Free agency opened on Wednesday, Nov. 17. Another player available for free agency is Pride teammate Tiffeny Milbrett, who played with Sinclair earlier in their careers on the Vancouver Whitecaps.

The men’s varsity hoop team is still without a win after a pair of tournament losses last weekend. SFU dropped to 0-3 following a 77-59 defeat to the University of California San Diego at the Notre Dame de Namur Thanksgiving Classic in Belmont, California last Saturday. The Clan dropped its opening game at the tournament 95-50 to San Francisco State University on Nov. 26. SFU shot less than 30 per cent in the opening game, including a dismal four-for-24 from behind the arc. Ricky Berry led the Burnaby squad with 15 points, while Justin Brown added 12. In the second game, Brown had a game-high 21 points and Berry added a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Chris Paredes got SFU to within a point midway through the first half. San Diego led 41-32 at halftime. The men host Quest University in their season home opener today (Wednesday). SFU will play its first-ever NCAA Div. Field Selects take three from Starz The Burnaby Mountain Selects under-12 and u-13 elite field lacrosse teams won three out of four games in Washington state earlier this month. The u-13 selects, including Burnaby attacker Jordan Gabriele and midfield Garrett Wills, and New Westminster goalie Dylan Sharpe, went undefeated in the two games of an exhibition series hosted by the South Sound Starz in Tacoma. The Selects won their opening game 7-6 against the Grade 8-aged Starz. The Selects then trounced Bainbridge Island,

one of the top high school lacrosse programs in Washington by a score of 15-2. The u-12s lost to the Starz’s Grade 7 team 6-5, but won their opening game 19-3 over the Starz’s younger side. George Oswald laughs out loud at the question, only because the answer is a little absurd. How many coaching changes have the B.C. Lions made since Oswald first started his coaching career at Notre Dame Regional Secondary School in the fall of 1964. Try 18. After 46 seasons, the man who many would call the greatest coach in the history of B.C. high school sports is set to step away from the only team he has ever known. Oswald, a Capitol Hill resident, stepped down as the head coach of the Jugglers’ varsity team at the end of this season to concentrate more on his administrative duties. “I still have the energy and I still have the passion,” said the 63-year-old Oswald, who has won 14 B.C. championship titles while coaching at the school that lies in the shadow of the PNE, including eight as the Jugglers’ head coach. “But they told me that because of my administrative duties, I had to make a choice. It’s a tough decision to give up something you have been involved with as

a player and as a coach for 50 years.” Simply put, you can’t overstate Oswald’s accomplishments in the game and the level of influence he has had in the shaping it at every level in this province. Over a 13-year span from 1977-89, a dynasty which began with his first full season at Notre Dame head coach, Oswald led his Jugglers to nine B.C. championship finals where his team went an incredible 7-2. And although Notre Dame has not won the title since 1993, the past 16 seasons have been every bit as important in cementing the reasons why he has coached the game for parts of six decades. “If you didn’t have a passion, if you didn’t think you could impart something on the kids, then you wouldn’t coach,” says Oswald, who also worked for the B.C. Lions for over 30 years in various capacities, beginning as a nineyear-old ball boy in 1955. After graduating from Notre Dame in 1964 as the team’s starting quarterback, Oswald was back the following fall as an assistant on a staff that included his lifelong friend and cur-

rent lead assistant coach Bill Cole, and head coach Al Blesch. Oswald became a teacher at Notre Dame in 1970 and remained an assistant coach through 1975. He shared the head coaching duties with Blesch in 1976 before assuming the role himself in 1977. In his time as both assistant and head coach, the galaxy of players the program produced is stunning, a sampling of which includes Lui Passaglia, Glen Jackson, Leo Groenewegen, David Mattiazzo and 2010 grad Stephen Spagnuolo. These days, with a near half-century worth of memories, every trip to the mall results in the most meaningful of reunions. “I am coaching sons of former players now,” he smiles. “No grandsons, but I got pretty close.” And then there are his own children. All five – John, Dawn, Anne-Marie, Leiana and Teresa – were varsity athletes at Notre Dame. “I have been lucky,” says Oswald. So many others, an entire generation of husbands and fathers who learned life lessons under him on a dusty, old practice field, would beg to differ.

VICK Marge SEYMOUR - Harry Passed away peacefully November 26th, 2010 after a short illness in New Westminster. He will be missed by his beloved Vi. His children Christopher, Patrick, Stephen (Joan Johnson), Joseph, Marie (Luke Balogh) Seymour. Always 'Diddy' to Darryl (Duke) Wolf, Michael Seymour, Shannon Wolf, Mary Seymour, Kim Fitwailter and six great grandchildren. Harry had many talents, there was nothing he couldn’t take on. He loved music, traveling and Coronation Street. Always a advocate for a properly made cup of tea and a kind heart for the less fortunate. Harry’s sense of humor and love of life was unraveling among those knew him. He worked tirelessly up until a week ago as Canada’s oldest active Bailiff. Harry never grew old just his body did. Special thanks by Carol, Randy, Richard, Nell and all his loyal friends. We will have celebration of Harry’s life in the spring.

Survived by her loving family Donald and Lynn, Brian and Sally, Karl Douglas and Wendy and John and Rita, 10 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, sister Dorothy, sister in law Mary and many cousins and friends. Predeceased by her dearly beloved Karl (married 53 years), brothers George, Fred and John. Born Biggar, Saskatchewan. Moved to New Westminster in 1948 where she resided for the following 62 years. Memorial services will be held at Shiloh 6th Avenue United Church, 1111 Sixth Avenue, New Westminster at 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 3, 2010. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to Shiloh Sixth Avenue United Church, in memory of Marge Vick.

Mary Alice Hazel L’Estrange L’Estrange, Mary Alice Hazel of Burnaby passed away November 21, 2010 at the age of 93 years. She is predeceased by her husband Robert and son Bobby. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Merle (Ernie) Hirsekorn, granddaughter Colleen (Landon) Helfrich, grandson William Peterson, sister-in-law Joan Pritchard and numerous nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank Dr. Jan Holan and the ECU nursing staff at Delta View Habilitation Centre not only for our mother – but also for us over the recent difficult days. Cremation, no service by request. In lieu of flowers donations to Delta View Habilitation Centre ECU Unit or to The Alzheimer’s Society. Do not stand at my grave and weep. I am not there, I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the diamond glints upon the snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain and I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awaken in the morning’s hush, I am that swift uplifting rush, Of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft star that shines at night. Do not stand by my grave and cry, I am not there, I did not die.
