Helga Jacobs Helga Jacobs of Camrose, AB passed away on May 10, 2015 at the age of 93 years. Left to cherish her memory are her sister Ella Thompson of Camrose; her brother-in-law Kore Bohmer of Daysland; several nieces and nephews; and numerous other family and close friends. She was predeceased by her parents Ole and Karen Loken; husband Herman; brothers and sisters-in-law Gulbrand (Lillian) Loken and Edward (Elma) Loken; sister Lily Bohmer; brother-in-law Edward Thompson; and nephew Calvin Bohmer. Helga Loken was born in the family farmhouse northeast of Bawlf on July 2, 1921. Her parents, Ole and Karen Loken, were homesteaders who had emigrated from Norway. She began her schooling in the one room Scandia School located one mile from the farm. At age 17, she began her first job working in the kitchen at the Bethany Old People’s Home in Bawlf. She married Herman Jacobs on October 19, 1941. They lived in Ohaton where Herman worked as the Alberta Pacific Grain Company elevator manager. Helga worked in the Ohaton store, the post office and as a school bus driver. She was the first person to drive Ohaton students to the Bawlf School. In her leisure time, she played on the Ohaton Ramblers championship softball team and was an active member of the Women’s Institute. In 1964, Helga began commuting to Camrose when she took a position at the Camrose Post Office. When Herman retired later in 1964, they moved to Camrose. Helga continued working at the Post Office until her retirement in 1979. She had worked for Canada Post for approximately 38 years. Helga was an avid coin and stamp collector, a member of the Probus Club and enjoyed playing bridge. One of Helga’s favourite activities was hosting dinner parties for friends. She was a terrific baker and pie maker and really enjoyed sharing her baking with others. Herman and Helga loved to travel and enjoyed trips to various parts of Scandinavia, the Orient, the United States, Australia and New Zealand as well as camping and fishing trips closer to home. Helga took joy in her volunteer work as a Welcome Wagon Hostess – she really liked meeting new people. She also volunteered with Golden Tours through the Camrose Seniors’ Centre as well as Pronghorn Bus Tours for many years. In 2005, Helga was honoured to receive the Alberta Centennial Medal in recognition of outstanding service to the people and Province of Alberta. Helga lived at Lakeside Village from 1989 to 2013. In 2013, she moved to Deer Meadows and to Bethany Meadows in 2014 where she passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 10, 2015. The family is grateful for the compassionate care provided by the staff members of St. Mary’s Hospital and Oak Cottage in Bethany Meadows. ~ Blessed be her memory ~ A memorial service was held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 15, 2015 at Messiah Lutheran Church in Camrose, AB with Diaconal Minister Bev Swanson officiating. Cremation has taken place. Memorial donations may be made to Hastings Lake Bible Camp, Bethany Group or the charity of one’s choice.
