Busy year for Mirror Lake Express By Dan Jensen
It's shaping up to be another busy summer for the Mirror Lake Express. The train is currently scheduled for 40 events, including seven parades at which it will represent the City of Camrose and Camrose County. "We are teaming up with About Time Productions for major parades to produce a musical production on the parade routes," said Camrose Chamber of Commerce Mirror Lake Express committee member Tom Chelmick last week. "We did this last year for the Capital X Parade in Edmonton and won Best Municipal Entry over all the other towns and cities in Alberta." The Mirror Lake Express season started with a display at the Camrose Regional Trade Show in February. Future scheduled appearances include the St. Albert Rainmaker Rodeo Parade May 25 and Jaywalkers' Jamboree May 31 and June 1. The first of the bi-weekly runs on the Mirror Lake trails will be on June 4. The train will run Tuesdays and Thursdays for all of June, July and August. "The price of riding the train will increase from $2 to $2.50," said Chelmick. "The increase is to try and offset a part of the loss of the STEP grant program that the provincial government cancelled in the March budget. This program funded two university students to the Visitor Information Centre last year." While prepaid $2 tickets will be available until May 30, quantities are limited. Possible uses of prepaid tickets include gifts for children and grandchildren, birthday party favours, or end-of-year school class gifts. The tickets are good for all Tuesdays and Thursdays, Jaywalkers' Jamboree and Canada Day. McClellan Wheaton Chevrolet Buick GMC has donated the use of a three-quarter ton truck for the season. CRE has donated the use of a half ton truck for the season for out-oftown events. Anyone interested in volunteering with the train is encouraged to contact the Camrose Chamber at 780-672-4217.
