Letter From Our Directors Dear Friends, Earlier this spring, we received outreach from the daughter of a former Kiniya camper who attended during the summers of 1927 and 1928. She wrote that her Mom, Elise Julia Sieker Walker, who passed away in 1992 at the age of 80, spoke often and very fondly about her experience at Camp Kiniya. After all these years, among her life’s treasures, Elise had held onto the allcamp photo taken during her first summer along with her coveted Camp Kiniya Pin. At Dudley, we enjoyed a similar experience when we received #4918 Bill Kennard’s amazing photographs from his time at Camp from 1932 - 1941. While many of Bill’s images were included in the earliest Last Whistles, his scrapbook offers a rare glimpse into camp life and showcases the photographic talent that he first learned at Dudley. Bill turned 101 in July of 2021. (See The Other Fellow First photo essay, Fall 2021 edition.)

In each of these circumstances, we are struck by the impact Camp has had on so many generations; how a Kiniya Pin from 1927 and Dudley photos from 1932— cherished by their owners for decades after the experience itself—serve as physical reminders of the memories they conjure.

A few of us attended a keynote address on “Generations at Camp” —a session focused on the benefit of fostering multi-generational communities at a recent American Camp Association Conference. WOW! Did this hit home. We have heard countless stories throughout the years of campers who discovered their calling or sought out mentor relationships sparked by experiences during their formative time at Camp. Many recall leaders or staff members who actively believed in them, listened to them, or taught them something brand new. Currently, our CDA team, co-led by #17982 Matt “Rooster” McElroy and #21013 Sarah “Bear” McKani, is driving the initiative to help pair our current and former leaders with mentors—like-minded professionals in industries they’re passionate about. Many will be able to connect with experienced alumni in “Career Affinity Groups” through the Camp Dudley and Kiniya Network on LinkedIn.

Those who are planning on being with us at Camp this summer range in age from nine years old to 89. Yes, we said 89. Our 83-year-old dear pal, #21532 Pete Nash, began his Kiniya journey in 1958; he’s been a loyal and devoted member of our community ever since. At Dudley, 89-year-old #7289 Ace Scharges will visit campus each week to continue his work in the Archives and share his remarkable findings with our campers. These friends have seen Camp change over the longest period of time in our world. They value the beauty of the experience they share with other generations each summer, none quite like the one before it or the one to follow.

The two of us were born in the same year, just one month apart. (We’ll let you guess which one of us is more mature... ;)) Regardless, as fellow Directors and dear friends, we recognize the importance and the value of lessons we learn from so many different generations. Some of our dearest friends, colleagues, and mentors are years older and years younger than we are.

Each and every day, we learn something from a camper.

Likewise, we receive some form of daily wisdom from an older staff member, alum or friend. The countless opportunities to work, play, and live alongside others, creating connections across generations, is one of Camp’s greatest gifts.

We will be welcoming our first Generation Alpha campers on both shores of Lake Champlain this summer, and we can’t wait to bring them into the fold. Summer '22, here we come!

Board Update - Meet the 2026 Class #15293 Jerome “J.J.” Alexander's first Camp experience began in 1990 as a Senior in Williams Cabin under the leadership of #11887 Bill Manning. He loved Camp so much that he returned the following year as an Aide. Little did he know that this was the summer that would change his life. At the end of the camp season, Willie and Lois Schmidt asked J.J. to live with them and attend school in Westport. J.J. lived with the Schmidt’s for three years until he graduated from Westport Central School in 1994.

J.J. currently works for Con Edison, in NYC, where he manages a Strategic Procurement Team which focuses on implementing new processes, procedures, and technologies in the company’s environmental space. In 1998 he graduated from Hobart and William Smith Colleges with a B.A. in Anthropology. In 2015 he attended Mercy College and received a Dual Concentration M.B.A. in International Business and Marketing. In 2020 he received a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Certification from Boston University and in 2021 he completed his M.S. in Global Supply Chain Management from Boston University. He currently lives in Katonah, New York, with his wife Monica and two children #26293 Anastacia (14) and Rome (8). Anastacia, who spent her first summer at Kiniya in 2021, attends The Master’s School in Dobbs Ferry, NY. Rome attends the Rippowam Cisqua School in Bedford, NY and is anxious to be a Cub in 2023.

#12640 Tyler Chapman attended Camp every summer from 1979 to 1984, rising from Cub to Junior Leader. He then returned as a Leader in the Junior Division for the summers of 19861988 and 1990. In addition to being privileged to attend camp during the Schmidt years, Tyler also was fortunate to benefit from the guidance of such legendary Dudley leaders as Steve Schmidt, George Nelson, Tom Bolster, and Mark Davenport. In 2000, Tyler joined the Board for a five-year term during one of the more momentous periods in Dudley’s history. It was during this time that the Board voted to expand Dudley’s mission and, ultimately, become the Kiniya and Dudley Camps we are today. Says Tyler, “Sitting in that meeting when we first voted to expand Camp’s mission, it was hard to envision what the future would look like, but I have marveled over the last two decades as Kiniya and Dudley have grown and thrived beyond anything I could have imagined. It is all a credit to the great leadership of these Camps and the strength of the greater Dudley family.”

For more than 40 years, Dudley has been the most important institution in Tyler’s life. Son #23740 Miles has attended Camp since his Cub summer and was a Junior Leader in the summer of 2021. Tyler’s younger children, Caroline and Reed, will hopefully one day be campers at Dudley and Kiniya. They are looking forward to visiting Camp.

After four years working at City Year in Boston, and earning a graduate degree in Education during that time, Tyler attended law school and has been practicing full time since 1997. His practice focuses on commercial litigation, but he also has had extensive experience serving on and advising non-profit boards throughout his career. He is looking forward to returning to the Board and is eager to serve Camp to the best of his abilities.

Board Update While most campers and parents anticipate the first summer at Dudley for months and prepare for weeks, #11871 Kevin McCormick arrived at Dudley in the Summer of 1975, three days after Dudleyite and YMCA Director Bob Stubbs offered him a scholarship position. He met the new Dudley director, Willie Schmidt, and was placed in Colgate cabin with a leader who was also new to Dudley, #11846 Tom Canning. It was the first of six summers of fun, growth, and broadening of horizons.

Three days after that final summer as a leader, Kevin was at Cornell University, where he studied biology, was a member of the swim team and met his wife Catherine “Kitty” Cantwell. He then moved south to Richmond where he found old Dudley friends and recruited a few new campers. In between Dudley Reunions, he picked up degrees in Gerontology, Anatomy, and Medicine before returning to New York for his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Rochester. After completing a fellowship in Geriatrics, he joined the medical school faculty. He is still there caring for elderly patients, teaching, and providing administrative leadership. In recent years this has included serving as Chief Medical Officer for Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville, NY. Says Kevin, “While I love many things about my career, one of the best perks is getting to come back to Dudley as the camp doctor for nearly two decades. (That’s a lot of Dudley T-shirts!) I also had the opportunity to serve on the Dudley Board from 2005-2009 and again from 2010-2012. Those were exciting days for Dudley.

We finally expanded our mission to include girls and bought a beautiful camp for them, complete with a fantastic director! We found a new director for the boys too. We dealt with landslides on both sides of the lake and prepared for the H1N1 Flu epidemic, which looks pretty trivial these days. Serving on the board not only gave me more justification for spending time at Dudley, it gave me the opportunity to make many new Dudley friends and renew ties with old ones.”

“As a former camper, leader, Dudley parent (3 sons and 2 daughters), and camp doctor I will bring all those experiences to the board, not to recreate the Dudley of my

youth but to meet current and future challenges so that diverse future generations will have the same opportunities I did, regardless of how they came to Dudley or on which side of the lake they spend their summers,” concluded Kevin. #21013 Sarah "Bear" McKani began working at Kiniya as a leader during the summer of 2008, and she has been thrilled to find ways to be involved with Camp ever since. Bear grew up going to Dudley reunions hosted by her grandparents, Sally and #15400 Bill Sword, in Princeton.

As a camper, she attended Camp Jeanne d'Arc, then Dudley's sistercamp.

Bear was overjoyed when Dudley expanded to include girls, and dove in to all that Kiniya had to offer in Colchester. Bear was a leader in the Senior Division for two summers, ran the hike hut, instructed sailing, and led Junior Beach. Bear also ran Hymn Sing at Kiniya from 2009 through 2012, and, with the help of #19629 D'Anne Hurd, wrote "'Neath the Pines," which is now part of Kiniya's final five.

Bear is a lawyer in the Antitrust Division of the Department of Justice. After studying English and French at Wesleyan University, she attended Georgetown University Law Center, where she received special recognition for pro bono service. While in DC, she also tutored with Horton's Kids, a Dudley community partner organization. At the Antitrust Division, Bear serves on the Women's Subcommittee of the Diversity Committee and continues to do pro bono housing work.

After Bear finished law school in 2016, Marnie and Kat generously offered her the opportunity to come back for another summer, and Bear leapt at the chance to lead Hymn Sing while studying for the bar on the shores of Lake Champlain. Needless to say, Junior Beach beats the law school library!

Bear lives in Brooklyn, New York, with her partner, Kunal. Many of her closest friends are Dudley and Kiniya alums, and she hopes that her work with the CDA will help offer opportunities to all alumni to connect with the Camp community.

Board Update - Meet the 2026 Class #20608 Martha McKinley grew up in Westport, NY, and is the daughter of #14508 Peggy Bolster and #10399 Hokey McKinley, sister to # 22008 Willa and #19399 Bo McKinley. Martha first experienced leadership at Kiniya as an Aide in 2007. She returned to Dudley in 2011 as a staff member in the A-Hut serving for four years.

Martha led the first Spain Exchange trip in 2015 and continues to frequent Dudley each summer.

Martha works for Marstone, Inc., a FinTech company that develops investing software with a mission to make these tools accessible to everyone, regardless of their education or wealth. Martha deeply believes in equality and is proud to work for a firm that strives to create products with this in mind.

Martha and her wife, Gillian, were married at Camp Dudley in 2018 in the first same-sex marriage at Dudley. They spend their time between New York City and Westport, NY. They welcomed their first child, a son Gray, who was on Dudley’s campus when just a few days old.

She is very excited and humbled to join the Board of Trustees and looks forward to serving the community that has served her in so many ways.

John (“JU” to his Dudley friends) is beginning his third term on the Board of Trustees, having served from 2003-07 and from 2017-21 and as a member of the Executive Committee from 2004-07 and again from 2019-21. JU began his first term as Chair of the Board in 2022.

JU grew up in New York City, received his BA from Brown University in 1987, JD from the UCLA School of Law, 1992 and his LLM from Harvard Law School in 1995. John is a member of the firm at TroyGould in Los Angeles, specializing in copyright and trademark litigation. He has a rich pro bono civil rights practice focusing on voting rights, public education, and providing for unhoused veterans. He serves as Chair of the University of Southern California’s Intellectual Property Institute and on the board of the Los Angeles Copyright Society. He has also volunteered as a Board Member of the ACLU Foundation of Southern California, Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles, and of California Common Cause.

John was a Dudley camper from 1976-79, then a JL and AL before serving as a Leader from 1985-87 and Plebe Division Head in 1988-89. JU also kept up his singing with bands in Southern California and can sometimes be seen performing on the Sunset Strip. John and Mary Ulin have been married for over 31 years and are the proud parents of four Dudley and Kiniya’ites; #21256 Ali, #20904 Tori (Kiniya’s 2022 waterfront director), #20304 Christine and #18756 Curtis. The Ulins live in San Marino, CA. JU said, “Chairing the Board is one of the adventures of a lifetime. I am so proud and psyched to have this chance to give back to Camp Dudley for everything it has done for our family.”

Sunday Talks with John Ulin Blog post from 3.6.22

I

n the summer of 2019, I sat in Witherbee Hall and watched then-Board Chair #22898 Whitney Phelps and incoming CDA president #19231 Kari McKinley present Camp’s Person of the Year award to #15305 Sheila Kapper, who was head nurse at Camp Dudley for 30 years.

That moment, when we saw women assume all three of the most revered positions in our alumni community, was a long time coming. In fact, it took 99 years before Dudley even issued camp numbers to women regularly.

Hymn sing icon #10475 Ellie Edwards and director’s assistant #10698 Helen Moak received numbers in the late 1960s, and it appears legendary Camp secretary Martha Ellenwood was next. In 1983 she refused her own number and adopted her late husband Jud’s number with a “-W” suffix (presumably for “wife”) – so her number was #4606-W. That summer, Camp began issuing numbers to all women staffers. The first group to receive regular camp numbers included Olympian #13295 Leslie Milne (1984 bronze medal in field hockey), Martha’s successor #13300 Pat Allen, and three of the Coyne sisters—#13281 Carol, #13288 Tracy and #13302 Mary.

Of course, we are now entering our seventeenth summer operating an entire camp for young women and girls in Colchester, Vermont. Our first woman director, #20001 Marnie McDonagh, is delivering on Camp’s motto and mission for a generation of Kiniya girls who will lead Camp into a future that has already arrived. Under their leadership, we will continue to assure that women are celebrated in our community and that all people in the Camp Family are on equal footing, regardless of gender.

It has been a long journey and we are still climbing.

After the camp number barrier fell, women began to assume positions of even greater importance at Camp.

In 1968, Ruth Marshall had been the first woman recognized as the CDA’s person of the year. #18178 Joan McKeown won the award in 1993 and it went to #16000 Lois Schmidt the following year. In 2018, Camp Kiniya’s founder, Helen Van Buren, became the first woman to win in her own right, and Sheila was the second in 2019.

In 2020, the CDA itself finally got a woman president, when Kari took the job. Meanwhile, #17400 Betsy Griffith, who was head of the Madeira School in Virginia, became the first woman to join Camp’s Board in 1998.

Year-Round Team Welcomes Three New Members!

Jamie Johnson

Facilities & Compliance Director, Dudley #25330 Jamie (James) grew up in Crown Point, New York, spending a lot of time outside hiking, camping, and canoeing in the Scouting tradition. He spent his college years in the Bronx, where he could volunteer for God’s Love We Deliver and work to develop after-school Cub Scout Programs in inner-city schools.

Jamie graduated from Fordham University in 1997 with a degree in history, at which time returned to the North Country. He soon began a 22-year career with Mountain Lake Services, serving in various roles and finally as the Director of Staff Education & Development.

Jamie’s wife #22830 Anita joined the Dudley family in 2012, and soon after, his sons #23830 Christopher and #25430 Jack, would become campers as well. Impressed with the Dudley tradition, Jamie participated in work weekends and, in 2018, began volunteering at the Rifle Range. He admired the culture, history, and dedication of the Dudley family.

When the opportunity to join the team arose in 2021, he was excited to take on a new career challenge and looks forward to leading the Maintenance Team and Compliance efforts at Camp Dudley.

Liz Moore

Director of Leadership Development, Kiniya #25223 Liz joins the Kiniya year-round team excited for the good work of empowering our young women as they grow into resilient, aware, and thoughtful individuals. As an extensive traveler and a perpetual student, Liz understands the power of inviting curiosity into our experiences. Liz’s education in anthropology and cultural geography, training in experiential education and body-based therapies, and love for culture and our natural world, all give her a unique approach to the art of human growth and development. She is ready to bring her joys, expertise, and ideas to the Kiniya community.

Liz was first introduced to Camp in 2014 to train the Dudley and Kiniya summer challenge course facilitators. Since 2018 she has been involved more extensively, training leaders and staff in specific leadership skills during pre-season. She has also worked alongside the Dudley Hike Hut team to support the rock climbing, ropes, and facilitation program. Liz says it was during this time she saw firsthand the incredible love and devotion of the folks who work at Dudley and Kiniya. “It’s truly remarkable how much good energy is devoted to the growth of the youth who are lucky enough to walk through Camp's doors,” she says.

Liz is an avid rock climber, paddleboarder, hiker, and gardener. She loves the change of seasons, cloud formations, and science fiction and psychology books and podcasts. Having lived and worked all along the east coast and abroad, Liz now splits her time between Baltimore and Burlington. The former is where she thrives as ‘the outdoor-adventure-aunt’ to three nieces and a nephew she can’t wait to welcome into our camp community.

Will Long

Facilities, Dudley #14158 Will “Wilbur” Long joins our yearround facilities team this spring.

Wilbur attended Dudley all four years as a camper from 1986-1989, where his love of Camp and the Adirondack Park was born. He returned in 1991 as a JL, rising to Cub D-Head in 1997. At the same time, he began his teaching career which conveniently left summer months available to return to Camp. In 1999, Wilbur served as Assistant Program Director with Matt Storey. Wilbur’s staff journey later led him to run the Arts Department, and he then became Camp photographer and videographer.

Will worked in several different schools in the off seasons, most recently teaching middle school math. Concurrently, Will’s work with the Sustainability Committee at Greenwich Country Day School led him to discover a previously undiscovered passion for design/build with a focus on energy efficiency.

Will now holds certifications in Net Zero Design/Build and Building Science Principles. He is a Passive House Tradesperson and loves working with his hands. The opportunity to work at Camp to combine all these skills presents a new and exciting chapter.

Wilbur hopes to combine his institutional knowledge, years of working with young people, and passion for design, building and learning to this new opportunity. The proximity to hiking, skiing, golf, and Lake Champlain are also huge bonuses. Wilbur, his wife Lauren, and dog Charley live in Elizabethtown, NY.

Networking at Camp By #15017 Evan George

B

uilding off of my blog post on Dudley & Kiniya as a Resume Builder, I’m sticking with this theme of career development and talking about everyone’s favorite career development term…networking!

I know, ugh. Just the thought of it makes me feel awkward and anxious. Hopefully, Dudley & Kiniya can help, though.

This winter we wrapped up a series of career development seminars with Jeff Chapski, the parent of a Dudley camper and the founder of Career Ready Coaching as well as the author of Careerology: The Art of a Successful Career. Our last seminar focused on networking, and it was a really fruitful discussion that included insights from alumni like #14571 Pete Groves.

What struck me most about the conversation though was that, in many ways, Dudley & Kiniya provide the perfect network. Here’s why…

Networking is not about someone giving a job, it’s about building meaningful and authentic professional relationships.

This was a point that Jeff made and I thought to myself, well that’s really what we’re all about here: building meaningful and authentic relationships. And networking in our community is a chance to do that with folks who may not have been at camp the same time that you were. However, you share the experiences and love of Dudley and Kiniya.

Personally, one of my most significant personal and professional mentors is #12082 Pat Butler. Pat and I never knew each other at Camp. I think we overlapped one or two years when he was a Leader and I was a camper. However, I got to know him through Dudley events in New York City in the early days of my working life. He never gave me a job (because he’s smart!), but he gave me tons of great advice. To me, it’s a great example of the kind of authentic and meaningful connections you can make in our community even when you’re no longer spending summers at camp.

Networking is learning more about the industry or career you’re interested in.

One of the things we try to focus on in our leadership development program is asking good questions. This is an important skill for two reasons: One it helps you learn about someone or something and, two, it lets people know that you’re listening to them and curious about who they are.

Because our community in the summer is defined by close, face-to-face, meaningful interactions with almost everyone on campus, our alumni tend to develop a great ability to connect with a wide-variety of people and get to know them easily. When that’s translated into the professional realm, it means our alumni are able to learn easily from others and also learn how they can be helpful to those around them.

The Dudley & Kiniya Network is filled with thousands of alumni who want to see each other succeed.

Those of us who are part of this community are lucky in many regards. A big reason for this is that for the rest of our lives, we’re surrounded by a group of people who want to help us find success in not just our careers, but in our lives. So we all have an incredible built-in network!

Plus, we all have a shared experience and love for the same place. That’s a wonderful place to start, even if you end up talking about professional experiences in tech, education, healthcare, the law, the arts, or finance— that shared common background makes our community very accessible.

Another point that Jeff made was that one of the keys to successful networking is asking, “Who else should I talk to?” And that’s where things get really interesting.

By starting conversations within the Dudley & Kiniya Network you also get the chance to expand one more layer out. It’s one of the best things we can do to help each other find success in this endeavor.

Smart folks want to meet our talented groups of Leaders.

It’s not just a nice thing to do for our older alums to meet with younger alums. This is a point that Pete made: it’s a pretty smart move for anyone interested in recruiting talented, smart, compassionate, and committed young people to their organizations to meet with Dudley & Kiniya Leaders.

So, it’s a win-win in our network. Our young alums get to learn about an industry and our older alums get access to terrifically talented people.

Networking is Fun! What’s more fun than meeting new people (especially Dudley & Kiniya people!), learning about them, and what they do?

“Extravagant,” “Fun,” “Exciting,” “Surprise,” “Bring your ‘A game’.” These are some of the many expressions Dudley and Kiniya alumni conjured when trying to describe extravaganzas.

The exact origin of the extravaganza at Dudley is about as hard to pin down as the activity is to describe. According to Last Whistle archives and alumni testimonials, non-athletic activity block programming took off during Willie Schmidt’s tenure as Camp Director, and many alumni credit him for helping create division-wide extracurricular activities sometime during the late 70s.

Still, no one is sure exactly when the term extravaganza entered the Dudley and Kiniya lexicon.

Prior to the late 70s at Dudley, and late 2000s at Kiniya, there existed a rich tradition of non-sequitur programming on both campuses. At Dudley, the leader chases and pageants of the early and mid-twentieth century provided a break from the normal athletic routine and gave leaders and campers an opportunity to display their wackier, creative sides. In the early days at Kiniya, it was traditional for campers and leaders to invent songs poking fun at camp rules and partake in campwide ceremonies marking the beginning and end of the summer.

The earliest extravaganzas at both camps were known for their creativity, scope, and rumored penchant for causing bystanders to whisper, “No safety there!” to their companions. #10649 Steve Wertimer, who spent eleven summers at Dudley—his first as a Junior in 1968 and his last as the Cub Division Head in 1978—insists the Soap Box Derby was amongst the greatest extravaganzas he’s ever seen. “The first year, the materials they gave the kids were pretty rudimentary. The wheels were wooden. We started at the top of the hill by the office and went down to Cub beach. There were hay bales lining the route on each side. These carts were not real sturdy; the wheels would break off, and several people exited the course altogether.”

Steve continued, “The next year, they had rubber tires with ball bearings in them. This made the cars much faster but no safer because these were kids who were building the cars. Leaders had to keep pushing the starting blocks farther and farther down the hill to reduce speed, so it was hard to gauge who was the overall winner. But it was very exciting. They had a couple of leaders who would commentate the whole thing as if they were the Saturday afternoon guys on Wide World of Sports. So that was a lot of fun.”

it around something campers are interested in and making it age-appropriate.”

Perhaps more important than ensuring buy-in from campers is establishing enthusiasm amongst the leaders; after all, these are the people responsible for putting on the show. Leader buy-in was a particular focus for #20725 Ragon Willmuth as Senior Division Head in 2018. Ragon, an eleven-year Dudley veteran and brother to Gretchen Willmuth, mentioned that “The best ‘ganzas are the ones that are fun for the leaders and the kids. I personally probably had more fun putting them on than participating as a camper.”

Much like the pioneering extravaganzas in the 70s at Dudley, campers’ excitement and enthusiasm reached new heights in the nascent Kiniya extravaganzas of the late 2000s. #21412 Gretchen Willmuth has been at Kiniya since the summer of 2009 and served as Division Head last summer in the Cub division. Her long tenure at Kiniya means she participated in Kiniya’s first formal extravaganzas. “I do remember my first extravaganza.

It was the summer of 2009. I was in Cady cabin—which at the time was the youngest cabin in Kiniya—and I was nine years old. The extravaganza was Halloween-themed, and we went around trick-or-treating and doing fun things like dunking for apples.”

Gretchen says, “I remember collecting candy and that was really fun because candy at Camp was always so exciting. I had no idea it was coming because it was my first year, so I just remember feeling very wondrous. I couldn’t even tell you what all the stations were…I just remember running around getting candy. This was somehow more exciting than what I was doing every day. I just ate it all up.”

Later, as a Division Head, Gretchen grew to appreciate the sometimes fickle nature of planning these elaborate, high-energy events. “It’s so hard. I’ve planned ‘ganzas where I was thinking ‘This is the best one yet!

We’re really gonna get them with this! This is gonna be awesome!’ only to have the campers say, ‘This wasn’t your best one.’ What makes a good ‘ganza is centering

Ragon spoke to the challenges of stringing together a coherent series of games in a fixed amount of time: “Usually you have blocks of an hour and a half, maybe three hours, so right there you have to come up with an entertaining idea for something within that time frame. But then there are activities within that. If you do something where the campers feel like they could have planned it themselves, they’re automatically disengaged—especially in the older groups. If you find a way to keep everyone in the game, it’ll be successful.”

Today, extravaganzas are as successful as ever, and a few have become Camp-wide traditions. Mellowfest began at Dudley in the mid to late 80s as a way for the Junior division to distinguish itself from the rambunctious Cubs and Plebes; it eventually became the Camp-wide extravaganza so many enjoy today. At Kiniya, Mellowfest has been a staple of girls’ summers for roughly the last decade.

Like Mellowfest, today’s most memorable extravaganzas pair a division’s personality with a unique game or theme. #25444 Magdalena Manastra has spent three years at Kiniya, starting in 2019, and has vivid memories of her extravaganzas. Her first was called “Home Alone” where Leaders ALs, and JLs all left their cabins while the girls were still asleep, only to materialize in the dining hall under a sign that said “Paris.” The extravaganza ended with the entire division watching “Home Alone” together.

Magdalena’s favorite extravaganza was something called Senior Night. It started with cards in the dining hall; leaders suddenly turned off the lights and it changed into a murder mystery party. Magdalena describes, “The victim was part of a band and she had three back-up singers who were suspects. We were split up into teams of five or six people, and we basically just asked suspects questions. There were other clues around the dining hall, too. I remember in the bathroom there were cards taped to the mirror with codes that we had to figure out. It was really fun.”

Extravaganzas are mostly fun and games, but every former leader who spoke about their role in the Dudley and Kiniya fabric insisted that they play a serious role in the trajectory of a camper’s summer.

“Extravaganzas are a great way to break the routine,” Ragon pointed out. “The beauty of Camp is it feels like everyone gets a chance to do everything, and extravaganzas are an important part of that. A different set of activities is crucial because it can be limiting if you just repeat the same thing every day.”

“It was meant to be different,” echoed Steve, “and take campers out of this hyper-competitive team structure and have a good time. Kids who weren’t necessarily good athletes could participate in a big way in a lot of extravaganzas.”

Gretchen sees extravaganzas as “on top of the special” that is the daily Kiniya routine. “For me, when I had that first extravaganza, everything was already so wonderful.

The extravaganza is beyond wonderful. It’s that special event that stands out in your mind. It’s something that you look forward to throughout the session and then, after it happens, spend the rest of the session talking about.”

Maybe that’s what has kept extravaganzas thrumming with such fervor for all these years—their ability to seamlessly emphasize the strengths of the many and the outlet for creativity it gives leaders and campers alike.

Or maybe it’s as simple as Magdalena put it, “It’s stuck around because it’s so much fun.”

Army-Navy December 2021 By #13820 Marcus Chioffi

T

he Army-Navy game has always played a part in American history since the two teams first met in 1890, a full five years after Sumner Dudley started the Boys Camping Society, and a year before Mr. Dudley moved the camp to Lake Champlain in 1891. Prior to the creation of the NFL, the contest was the biggest football game in the country for much of the first half of the 20th century, and the rivalry has grown from then to now. Historically played on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, the two schools engage in a celebration of their tradition marked by the marching of the student body of both West Point and Annapolis. That storied tradition continues to this day.

Two giants in this hallowed contest are #9061 Rollie Stichweh, former Camp Dudley Director (1970-74) and legendary quarterback of the Army squad in 1963 and ‘64, and Roger Staubach, the Navy quarterback during the same period. These two men, who upon graduation both served in Vietnam, have remained lifelong friends since their playing days. More recently, they co-chaired the host committee that brought the Army-Navy Game to New York’s MetLife Stadium in December 2011 from its more traditional home in Philadelphia.

Their work was to honor and collectively commemorate the 20 years and three months after 9-11. This year was not the first time these two helped the nation grieve through their efforts in the Army-Navy football game.

Stich reached out to his vast cadre of Dudley pals and his sons-in-law to bring together a great group (pictured on page 21) to witness a unique mix of camaraderie and rivalry, celebration and competition. It was truly an amazing day. It was a joy to be able to spend time together with such connected souls both in the stadium and within the group that Stich had assembled.

In 1963, both men led their respective teams to successful seasons. Army was 7-2 and Navy was 8-1 before they met that year. The game was scheduled to be played in Philadelphia’s Municipal Stadium on November 30, 1963. However, the assassination of President John F. Kennedy called the playing of the game into question.

After much debate among the First Family, government officials, and the leadership of both schools, it was decided that since the game was one of President Kennedy’s favorite national events, the game would be postponed one week and played on December 7, 1963. In 2013, Jack Ford, the Emmy-winning broadcaster, produced Marching On: 1963 Army-Navy Game Remembered, a documentary to commemorate the 50th anniversary of that game.

Ever the gracious and talented host, Stich saw a steady flow of folks who stopped by to say hello to their teammate, leader, mentor, and most importantly to all, their friend.

Among those who gathered were Pete Dawkins, USMA ‘58 (pictured below with Stich), who won the Heisman Trophy and was a consensus All-American that year.

After leaving West Point, Dawkins went on to Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar. Now that is a short list.

Another friend who stopped by to be with Rollie was Jack Ford, the producer of the aforementioned documentary of the 1963 Army-Navy game. Jack brought such a unique perspective and many stories about this long-standing rivalry. (Pictured above with Stich and Mike Stevens.)

The event was a true testament to Stich as a man and a leader, to have such a varied group of alums, friends, associates, family, and of course the Dudley community who he puts his arm around and pulls into his life.

Thank you, #9061 Rollie Stichweh, for your lifetime of openness, giving, and for living the other fellow first, every day.

The 2021 contest was relocated to New York through the hard work of Stichweh and Staubach. These two men worked tirelessly to gain support and corporate sponsorship to move the game to MetLife Stadium. This initiative also took some work from a Dudley MetLife insider #11373 Mike Stevens, then the Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer for the New York Giants, was asked about putting in a bid for MetLife to host the Army-Navy Game. Mike picked up the phone and reached out to Stich, and Rollie took it from there.

After five years of work, phone calls, meetings, and events, it was game day. On December 11, 2021 the Midshipmen and the Cadets marched onto the field at MetLife Stadium commemorating the 122nd meeting of these two programs.

he work of preserving the thousands of slides that are in the Archives continues. It is a tedious and challenging task. Truly a labor of love. The safe return of boys and girls to the cabins at Kiniya and Dudley in 2021 was in itself a fantastic accomplishment, giving us great reason to celebrate. Equally as important were the 2021 achievements in the Development and Alumni Relations world. As reported to the Board of Trustees in February 2022, a summary follows.

1,759 donors contributed over $3,372,000 to support all facets of our Camp programs and activities.

Camp received its first $1,000,000 estate gift for the endowment.

$913,547 was donated to the Annual Fund.

The first of five new staff cabins planned for Kiniya was fully funded; it’s expected to be ready for 2023.

The Frisbie Farm was added to Camp Dudley’s campus, and the purchase was fully funded by generous donors.

Helping Others Suffering From Housing Crisis: #9191 Carleton Cleveland at Work

It was September of 2017 and Mother Nature had once again unleashed one of the most destructive forces on the planet. This time, it was Hurricane Irma, and her sights were on southwest Florida. The one-time Category 5 hurricane made landfall in the Florida Keys and marched right through the center of the state with winds at 130 mph. Some of the most vulnerable people in the area were directly in the storm’s path.

A record 6.5 million Floridians evacuated, making it the largest evacuation in the state’s history. But for some residents of Immokalee, home to many agricultural workers and their families, all they could do was evacuate to the local shelters, or ride out the storm in the old, dilapidated trailers that they called home.

Immokalee is a town where Latinxs and Haitians make up 72% of the local population, and it is not uncommon to hear Spanish and French Creole languages spoken wherever you go. In this area of Collier County, which already struggles with a poverty rate of 44%, families had no financial means to recover. If their home survived (and many didn’t), they had no choice but to continue to live in the damaged trailer.

If there was anything positive about the storm’s impact on the community, it was the urgent need for safe and affordable housing for these hardworking people. The significant destruction of housing stock left farmworkers and their families with even more expensive and yet sub-standard, unsafe, and overcrowded housing. If the house was not totally destroyed, it was still rented out, and for many farmworker families, there is no option but to pay up to 70% of their income to live in trailers with some having vermin, mold, and limited bathing or toilet facilities.

The solution to the housing crisis in Immokalee has required a network of resources and many partners: individuals, foundations, government, private businesses, churches, civic groups, and nonprofit agencies. The Immokalee Fair Housing Alliance (IFHA) was formed to address the housing problem head-on. Their goal is to strengthen the entire community through safe, healthy, affordable housing.

#9191 Carleton “Cleve” Cleveland serves as the Development Director for IFHA. “The IFHA project is working to build 128 safe, affordable rental units for farmworkers, their families, and other extremely low-income residents of Immokalee,” said Cleve. “We are a non-profit organization, we’ve purchased the land, and have recently broken ground on these rental units that will cover ten acres. The new homes will be in an area central to transportation, markets, churches, and businesses.”

Cleve continued, “To live the way these people are living is inhumane. Safe, affordable housing is not a luxury,” he said. “It is a basic human need and a critical way of protecting the residents of Immokalee from the spread of future virus pandemics and hurricanes.”

A Tribute to the “Music Doctor”

I

t was a beautiful fall afternoon on Sunday, Sept. 19, when Todd Gaglianese and I did our annual fall tour of Fort Hill Cemetery. The crowd of 63 people had come to support Willard Memorial Chapel and its Community Preservation Committee.

Because it was September and schools in the county were in their third week, we had added more stops on the tour: teachers. These were people who had devoted their time and talent, and in fact their lives, to helping young people.

There were now 25 stops, and the tour took two hours.

Todd and I took turns sharing their history at each gravesite — Mrs. Rogers, Brud Holland, Professor, and Mrs. Long, Martha Shosa. We like to interact with the audience, so I asked the group, “How many teachers were present?” The show of hands gave me the opportunity to applaud them and to remind them of the legacy they were leaving to the many students they had helped over the years.

One of the most endearing and new presentations was at the modest grave of Stuart Hemingway. The flat plaque in the ground behind the graves of Martha Shosa, the Longs, and alongside his parents briefly listed his information. Born in 1942, he died on April 23, 2015, at the age of 73.

To the casual observer, an inscribed phrase, “The Music Doctor” must have puzzled them as to its meaning.

Those who knew and remembered Stuart would know.

Todd shared the story of this blind musician and the lasting impression he made on everyone. He recounted the depth of his caring nature. Locally, he worked closely with disabled children, and helped them overcome the individual challenges each one faced. He taught them by example to get in touch with the music inside them as a form of “music therapy,” hence the moniker “The Music Doctor.” Friends enjoyed his joyful spirit and sense of humor, affectionately calling him a “wise guy.” Many would later marvel at his tenacity and courage.

I stood aside and watched the crowd as Todd talked about his friend. He was born with full sight, and at an early age; a childhood illness caused him to gradually go blind. His brave mother was determined that her son grow up to be independent and achieve anything he set his mind to. She encouraged his musical and piano ability. She sent him each summer to a camp for chil-

dren with disabilities and he learned the skills he would need as a blind adult.

These skills helped him in 1960 to have the courage to move to New York City and rent a small flat on 46 W. 75th street near Central Park. Each day he would venture out and explore the city with his cane and memorize the route.

One day, he heard inviting music coming from a thirdfloor walkup in the Brill Building. They were musicians in a jam session. He worked his way up to them and thus met young Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons in their recording studio! He made several suggestions to them and was invited to join them. Back then, studio musicians were paid, but not given credit for their participation.

I was able to watch the moving magic of the crowd’s reaction. It was as if an electric shock moved through them like a powerful musical crescendo. Todd continued to recite the names of groups Stuart, later on, was introduced to and worked with. He listed the records he was on.

One by one, recognition dawned on the gathering. There was an audible murmur through the crowd. I shall never forget it and give tribute now to Stuart Hemingway.

A New North Country Partnership By #10555 ​​Dave Langston

I

n the spring of 2019, Matt Storey started a conversation with Clifton Harcum, Director, Center of Diversity at SUNY Potsdam. Matt had read a story in the Adirondack Explorer about Clifton’s enthusiasm for exploring the ADKs and had reached out to connect.

Clifton developed a passion for hiking and has looked for ways to encourage other people of color to discover the rich outdoor experiences that are so abundant in the North Country. During that initial meeting Clifton and Matt spoke about ways to get more diverse campers to Camp (including North Country kids and Cliff junior!) and encourage more urban kids to experience the Adirondacks. Clifton also shared his desire to create an Alternative Spring Break Program where SUNY Potsdam students had a chance to immerse themselves in rich Adirondack experiences. Matt offered to host the endeavor at Dudley when Clifton was ready.

Despite COVID delays, the SUNY Potsdam/Camp Dudley Alternative Spring Break program became a reality in March 2022. Twenty-three SUNY Potsdam students arrived on March 7, 2022 and spent a week enjoying Camp and the surrounding area. The students used MacLean lodge as their base of operation, spent a day

on the Challenge Course, prepared and shared meals, explored the Camp property, and discovered some of the recent beaver action around Camp. A few students even decided to spend the night in Peavy Lean-to at North Point. A side trip to a nearby Amish sugarbush allowed the students to provide some local community service while they learned about tapping maple trees.

2021 Greg Farrell Award Lighting Sparks, Living Boldly, Leaving the World a Better Place

A

fter the passing of #9106 Greg Farrell in 2020, a group of Greg's former colleagues from the early crew of NYC Outward Bound Schools established an award to honor the legacy and life of Greg, a visionary educational leader and public servant, a founder of NYC Outward Bound Schools and EL Education (formerly Expeditionary Learning), and an Executive Director of the Fund for the City of New York.

A dedicated Dudleyite, dreamer, and doer, Greg possessed an exceptional ability to recognize and cultivate the gifts of others, support creativity, service, and adventure, and foster innovation toward a better, more just society. Each year, the award recognizes an individual or team that exemplifies the qualities Greg sought to nurture in others. The award's motto is "Lighting Sparks, Living Boldly, Leaving the World a Better Place," true to how Greg lived his life.

Moses Ssenyonjo has been named as the recipient of the 2021 Greg Farrell Award. Chosen from among an outstanding group of 14 nominees who work in fields ranging from education to healthcare, Moses is a Rwanda-based educator with roots in Uganda. He currently serves as the Head of School of the Rwamagana Leaders' School and has provided exemplary leadership in this role, steering the school and supporting his students through a global pandemic.

Moses embodies so many of Greg's values. He, like Greg, is a patient listener who asks insightful, probing questions, a tireless connector who is skilled in building relationships with people of all backgrounds, a visionary who is also pragmatic enough to get things done, and someone who is always ready and willing to give credit to others.

Winter Gatherings at Camp The beautiful settings and views across our spectacular campuses offered perfect venues for small outdoor alumni gatherings at both Camps in December of 2021. The outdoor space at Mimi’s Lodge and the Middlebury Outdoor Pavilion provided the ideal locations for local area families to gather and share some snacks and hot chocolate. The fellowship of friends warmed the chill December air.

Low Impact Logging at Stacy Brook Wilderness Area By #25330 Jamie Johnson

Camp Dudley's Stacy Brook Wilderness Area comprises approximately 250 acres of pristine Adirondack Wilderness that is home to several lean-tos, yurts, hiking trails, and memories in the minds of countless Dudley campers and Kiniya rock climbing majors.

This year saw us embark on a new endeavor: low-impact on property-logging. Most logging operations are focused on maximizing the financial returns of the land; most typically follow a once-every-20-years approach to land management that often leaves a scarred and damaged landscape. Instead, Dudley adopted a low-impact, sustainable approach in order to take care of what we are blessed to have.

Last Fall, a young man from Westport named Gabe Palmer reached out to Matt to create a plan for us to test out the process for the winter. Gabe worked with his team of horses to selectively harvest and remove a limited number of mature pine and hemlock trees from the western side of the property near the town-owned Greeley Pond. In his wake, he left new hiking trails which provide access to several beautiful spots unknown to those who have previously used the property. These trails will allow future Dudleyites to explore and discover wonderful new parts of the area. The harvested timber then gets transported to a local, family-owned Amish mill on the Stevenson road right next door. Finished lumber winds up being purchased and used for building projects locally on campus and within the community. In fact, Camp Dudley recently replaced the side of one of the Frisbie Farm barns; in all likelihood, some of the boards were milled from timber harvested from our own property. By keeping the scope of the harvest small, we hope to be able to partner with our logger and his horses for years to come to manage our forest responsibly—removing the mature trees that are more likely to die or break in a storm while making room for newer, younger growth. And we’ll continue to use the milled lumber for our building purposes, much like those before us have done for generations.

One resource is able to be sustainably managed, granting us increased access and providing us locally-sourced lumber while supporting local families. Just another example of Camp’s commitment to leaving it "better than you found it!"

Impressio’s mission is to materially transform the most important products in the world. Current projects include reimagining helmet technology for the NFL and U.S. Army as well as creating new biomedical devices with grants from the NSF and NIH. The NFL announced that Impressio is one of three granted funding from the NFL Helmet Challenge. In Memoriam #5772 Lee Day Rose, Marshall, VA, passed away on January 9, 2022. He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Janet Evans Rose. Lee attended Camp from 1937-1943 and was very pleased to have the ability to help other boys share in the experience of attending Dudley and all it has to offer. Lee’s father, #2596 Armand M. Rose, was the first family member to come to Dudley.

Lee was a retired farrier who specialized in founder and navicular disease, saving numerous horses and ponies from early retirement. With a passion for horses and riding, Lee could often be found riding throughout Fauquier County. Having grown up on the east end of Long Island, Lee was also an avid boater.

Lee is survived by his two sons, Timothy (Vicky) and #12263 Scott (Patricia); his two sisters, Susan Potter and Aileen deVergie Zmuran; and grandchildren Christina, #25863 Evan, and #25763 Grant. #7828 Bill Hallenbeck passed away peacefully on February 13, 2022. Bill was at Camp from 1949-1956, working his way from cub to leader. Bill continued his service to Camp as the CDA President from 1982-1985. Dudley was his true “home away from home.”

Bill was born in Glens Falls, NY, on November 8, 1938, and made his home there until he left for college. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School and began his career in advertising with J. Walter Thompson and went on to work for several other ad agencies. He eventually used his skills and knowledge to work on a joint newspaper venture between the U.S. and Russia. He later became involved in the creation of communications networks as the age of technology presented itself with new possibilities. In his later years, Bill began a second career as an estate manager for several large properties in the Westchester County area.

Bill was a long-time, faithful member of Stanwich Church.

He was a kind and gentle man who exemplified 1 Cor. 13:4-8, “Love is patient, love is kind…” in his service and in his love of family and friends.

Bill is survived by his wife of 46 years, Patricia, his three children, #13320 Heather Titterton (Paul), #13990 Cathy Carlson (Mark), and #13440 Chris Hallenbeck (Lisa); his

grandchildren, #23601 Sophia and #19667 P.J. Titterton, Emily, Sally, and Grace Carlson, and Lily and Charlotte Hallenbeck; and his siblings, #8504 Chris Hallenbeck and Hope Hall. He was predeceased by his sister Anne McWilliams. #12186 Keith Smalls passed away suddenly on March 1, 2022. Keith attended Camp in 1977. #12188 Dennis Ryan recalls, "I started camp as a second-half junior in '77.

There was a kid in Allegheny second half from NYC named Keith Smalls. I remember him well because our cabins were teamed on the soapbox derby, and he and I were the two drivers. I remember that he wore his pajamas, saying that, in case he crashed, they were nice and soft. :)" Keith was born in Brooklyn, NY, later moving to the Capital District, where he was employed by MVP Health Care. He loved his work and also loved spending time with his family and children. He was the husband of Claudia L. DeBrocky, father of Keith Flowers (Sharia), Shakeem Smalls (Melissa), Adriana Smalls, Xzayvean Smalls and Rayanna Smalls. He is also survived by his brother Leonard and sister Brenda, his grandchildren, numerous other family members, and his best friend William Stevenston. #13297 Joan Snook Timm passed away on March 4, 2021. At Camp, Joan was an integral part of the Witherbee production team for almost a decade through the mid1970s and early 1980s. She served as the costume designer and seamstress for many Witherbee productions.

Says #11264 Mark “Davo” Davenport, “From queens, princes and paupers to the Muckagluck and two-headed dragon, from Humpty Dumpty and the Three Blind Mice to flying monkeys and Philadelphia lawyers, Joan always made us look our best. Sewn with love and artistic grace that would be the rival of any professional Broadway theater, many of her creations remain vital elements of the Dudley costume locker and still find their way on stage to this day.”

Joan was born in 1929 in Princeton, NJ. She earned a BA from Wellesley College, her MS from Wheelock College, and an EdD in Human Development from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Joan taught at Wheelock College

In Memoriam before moving to Wisconsin where she served as Chair of the Educational Foundations Department at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. While teaching there, she received the Edward M. Penson Distinguished Teaching Award and other honors including the John McNaughton Rosebush Professorship (award) for outstanding teaching, research, and service.

As an independent artist, Joan sold her paintings in Boston and Wisconsin. She authored two books: Four Perspectives in Multicultural Education and with Henry C. Timm, Athena’s Mirror; Moral Reasoning in Poetry, Short Story and Drama. Joan also published over thirty articles in professional journals.

She and her husband Henry retired to Door County, Wisconsin in 2000 where they enjoyed teaching winter classes on film at The Clearing in Ellison Bay. They were members of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Sister Bay. Joan is survived by her husband, #11444 Henry C. Timm; her two daughters and son, #13299 M. Jeanne Thrower Aguilar, Annie (Robert Patterson) Thrower-Patterson, and #11435 Eden Thrower; two stepchildren, #13725 Triffin Timm (Gregory) Morris and #13140 Simon Christopher Timm (Allyson McKinney Timm); three grandchildren, Xavier Aguilar, Genevieve Aguilar Reardon (Matt), and Oskar Thrower-Patterson; one step-granddaughter, #26025 Abigail Morris; two great-grandsons, #23025 Teddy and Luke Reardon; sister-in-law, Pamela Melendy of Green Bay and other relatives and friends. #14219 Scott Tornga, 46, passed away on October 18, 2021 in Reno, NV, from cardiac arrest. For many years he bravely battled the complications of diabetes. A sixth generation Californian, he was born and reared in Marin County, where he lived through his teenage years.

He loved traveling and called many places home before settling in Reno. He is survived by his parents Thomas and Nancy; his brothers #13015 Todd (MM) and Andrew (Sarah); and five nephews and nieces. Scott's bright smile and infectious laughter will forever be remembered.

#14251 Mary Tanneberger of Brooklyn, NY, passed away on February 23, 2022 after a long struggle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease).

Mary was a social worker specializing in family therapy, and she spent most of her 35-year career helping families in need. She worked with victims of domestic violence, persons living with HIV and those battling drug addiction, providing crisis care to homeless children and runaway teens, and countless others seeking aid in New York City's vast social welfare system. She approached every day and every difficult situation with tireless positivity and refused to see setbacks as anything other than minor obstacles to clear from the path of making others' lives more meaningful.

Mary was a graduate of St. Bonaventure University and Catholic University Graduate School of Social Work, and she pursued post-graduate work at The Ackerman Institute for Family Therapy in NYC. She married #10875 Steve Schmidt in 1985 in the Dudley Chapel and joined the Witherbee staff the following summer. Mary created Dudley Dance Theater in 1987 with the show "We Are Only a Machine."

From 1986 through 1995 her two-week summer vacations were spent in the hall producing original dance theater works in the happy certainty that all Dudleyites— campers, leadership and staff, boys and girls, young men and women, performers and audience alike—would fall in love with the creativity of physical expression. She brought joy and passion for multiple dance styles from hip-hop to ballet and everything in between to the Witherbee stage. Among her memorable pieces for Saturday Night Shows were "Five For Elvis," "Believe It," "White Man Sleeps," "Creation of the World" and "O Baby!"

Mary's love of Dudley and Kiniya was embodied through the countless camp friends she adored, from the great elders to the brilliant youngsters, and she always spoke of "The Other Fellow First" as more than a motto, as a bell that rang true and clear from Westport and Colchester out into the world every day. She is survived by her husband, #10875 Steve, beloved daughters, #20351 Telka and #22875 Qi Mei; and by her many camp sisters, brothers, nieces and nephews of the families Tanneberger, McPheron, Kilkelly, Myers, Schwoebel, Baldwin and Schmidt.

In Memoriam #18178 Joan McKeown, Chatham, NJ, passed away on October 6, 2021, in South Windsor, CT. Joan’s connection with Camp initially began through her husband #5178 Sam, but she quickly established herself as one of Dudley’s lead recruiters. Joan and Sam shared a passion for Camp Dudley and Camp Kiniya and helped direct hundreds of young boys and girls to the north country to spend their summers. It would be an impossible task to figure out how many campers were introduced to Dudley and Kiniya through Joan and her family.

Joan was an affectionate and loving wife (#5178 Samuel Anderson McKeown II, predeceased) and mother of #10883 Robert Lanston McKeown (#14525 Sara), #11170 William Tolbert McKeown (#14256 Kerry), and #13540 Joan McKeown Baratta. She was a grandmother of ten that she lovingly referred to as her ‘treasures:’ #18795 Thomas, #19178 Samuel, Molly, and Anne McKeown (Robert McKeown); #20356 Layne, #21170 Jacqueline, #22656 Ainsley, and #23370 Brynn McKeown (William McKeown); Emily and #19540 George Baratta (Joan Baratta).

Joan had a strong sense of community and was passionate about everything she did. In her professional career as a travel agent, Joan helped many newlyweds plan memorable honeymoons, led numerous ski trips all over the world to benefit American Field Service, and created exciting family trips around the globe.

Joan was a 1949 graduate of the Kent Place School in Summit, NJ, and a 1951 graduate of Bennett Junior College, Millbrook, New York. Throughout her life, Joan actively served Christ Church in Short Hills, The Kent Place School, and was a Trustee Emeritus of The Chatham Day School. Joan was a Sustainer of the Junior League of Short Hills, and a former member of The Lake Placid Club in Lake Placid, New York, as well as The Short Hills Club and Baltusrol Golf Club. #20724 Jonathan “Colby” Williams, 24, passed away November 12, 2021, due to complications from sickle cell disease. He attended Camp from 2008-2011.

Raised in Jersey City and South Orange, New Jersey, Jon had a quick wit, a legendary smile, and a charming demeanor. As a young boy, he loved creating outdoor games and adventures for the neighborhood kids. If he

wasn’t climbing trees and crafting wooden swords, you could find Jon playing with Lego sets, Minecraft or with his siblings.

Jon began his education at St. Luke’s School in Manhattan, New York, and Jefferson Elementary in Maplewood, New Jersey. He continued at Aquinas Academy in Livingston, New Jersey, and graduated from Maplewood’s Columbia High School in 2015. Jon loved being active and regularly participated in sports. He was a part of Maplewood’s Jaguar Track Club and played for Columbia High School’s soccer and fencing teams.

After graduating, Jon focused on art, music, and fashion design. In 2019, he and a friend created a fashion and graphic design company called Corruption, LLC that specialized in modeling, screen printing, and photography. Jon, a music virtuoso, created songs “Too Late,” “Sleep Alone,” “Movie” and many more. He will be dearly missed.

Jon loved making friends and spending time with his family.

Whether in New York City or New Jersey, Jon always welcomed everyone and made his guests feel special.

Surviving are his parents Ian and Molly Ann Williams; siblings #19678 Nicholas, #20954 Jessica and #21411 Hannah; as well as grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins. #25465 Beckham Egglefield passed away on February 4, 2022. He attended Camp in 2019; his stepmother #25518 Terry Egglefield worked on the A-Hut staff in 2019 and 2020.

Born in 2003 in Plattsburgh, NY, Beckham was a sophomore at Boquet Valley Central School where he enjoyed playing soccer and basketball.

He spent time with his friends, sharing his smile and kind heart.

Beckham was always up for fun. He enjoyed fishing, car shows, music, animals, shooting hoops, and looking his best, with an immense passion for shoes. In his down time, you could always find him playing video games with his brother.

Beckham was an avid car enthusiast; a true motor-head.

Every evening he loved going for drives and doing things with his dad, his best friend in the world.

Beckham valued family and had a special bond with his older brother and was a proud protector for his two little sisters.

Beckham is predeceased by his beloved “pop” and idol, Dennis Egglefield, and aunt Korrina (Conley) Duprey.

Friends of Camp Joan A. Evan, Crystal River, FL, twin sister of #7405 William “Willie” Schmidt, passed away on March 26, 2022. Joan shared Willie’s passion for Camp Dudley and was a faithful lifetime friend. She continued to stay in touch after the passing of Willie and Lois.

Joan was born in 1929 in Englewood, NJ, and moved to Citrus County, FL, 34 years ago. She was a retired telephone operator and an artist in oils, winning many awards at the Citrus County Fair and other local events. Joan was a member of the Citrus Art Club, the Manatee Club, the New Jersey Club, and the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary-Crystal River Flotilla. As a graduate of the Crystal County Sheriff’s Office Citizens’ Academy, Joan had a special place in her heart for the deputies and support personnel of the Sheriff’s Office. She loved her steadfast companions, dogs Baby Belle and Baby Jane.

Joan was preceded in death by her husband, United States Army veteran Louis Evan, and her twin brother #7405 William “Willie” Schmidt. She is survived by her son Christopher Evan (Ronda), granddaughter Natalia Evan, niece #13405 Beth Schmidt, nephews #12993 Don, #10875 Steve, #11260 Ed, and #10874 Doug Schmidt, as well as other family members.
