MB Landscaping & Nursery, Inc. Offering a One-Stop Solution to Landscape Contractors in the Greater Los Angeles Basin Written by: Brian Hoover

F

ederico Martinez had his own business in Mexico, but back in 1983 he decided that it would be prudent to make a trip to California to put together a stake of money to help him further his dreams back home. He took a job working for a few landscape contractors before deciding that he would remain in California and take a shot at starting his own gardening business. Things moved along fast and soon he was taking on much more than just lawn and gardening projects. As his brothers became available, they went to work for Federico and MB Landscaping & Nursery was officially launched in 1988, with MB naturally standing for Martinez Brothers. Eventually, his two brothers split off to start businesses of their own and Federico continued on with the original company. Federico and his wife, Maria, have five children together and like many traditional hard working families, the children would go home each day from school and help out any way they could with the family business. Maria was the oldest and she remembers helping her father at the age of 12 or 13 with paperwork and other office duties. Israel came into the company much like Maria and immediately after graduating he also went fulltime into the business. Yanet came next and she also worked after school and during the summers, before earning her degree from UC Davis in Landscape Architecture. She contributed greatly to the family business and today works the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Johanna followed her sister, Yanet, and earned a degree in chiropractic medicine and acupuncture,

after also contributing tremendously to the family enterprise. The last of the five is Jordan and he made the decision to attend a tech college to earn his degree in industrial mechanics, which has now enabled him to perform and oversee all of the machinery maintenance duties for the company. Maria Martinez serves as corporate secretary for MB Landscaping & Nursery. “I remember my father pulling all of us together right after I graduated from high school to ask a very important question. He presented a choice of either buying a new home in Palos Verdes or starting a nursery business,” recalls Martinez. “We already had a small nursery going in our backyard that our mother took care of and we enjoyed it very much. It didn’t take us long to decide unanimously to jump feet first with our mother and father into the nursery business.” The year was 1998 when

Federico was offered the opportunity to purchase an existing nursery in Carson from a gentleman that was ready to retire. The new nursery division took off from the start, and Federico decided to take that momentum and start another division that he was also passionate about. He purchased a tub grinder from W.H.O. Manufacturing in Colorado and started a green waste recycling division. This move played perfectly into a business plan that now covered landscape construction, nursery sales, and green waste recycling. MB Landscaping & Nursery could now recycle their own waste, as well as the green waste for the hundreds of landscape contractors that visited their nursery each month. The new divisions and growth required more space, and by 2002 the company had three locations in Carson that totaled 25 acres of land. MB Landscape & Nursery’s diversification led to tremendous growth and by 2007 the company had 60 employees. Within the next year, they were down to 25 employees. The recession was brutal to arguably everyone in the landscape construction industry and MB Landscape & Nursery was no exception. “It was our diversity and uniqueness that allowed us to grow quickly and I believe this also kept us alive during the Great Recession as

www.calcontractor.com

well,” says Martinez. “We had become a one stop shop for our loyal customers and this allowed us to be one of the lucky few that remained in business during those difficult economic times.” The company has now grown back to 35 employees and according to Maria Martinez, 25 of these employees have been with the company for more than 12 years. “We have long-term employees that are truly a part of our family,” says Martinez. “We treat both our employees and customers with respect and work hard to maintain a safe and comfortable atmosphere for everyone.” According to Martinez, there is no single service or product that sets them apart. “It is the culmination of everything we offer together as a whole that keeps our customers coming back each day,” says Martinez. “When a contractor starts a job, they bring us the clearing waste to recycle and then purchase the trees, plants, soil mixes, compost, rock, gravel, decomposed granite and a variety of other materials they need for that same project. They can do this with a family operation that they trust and where they know they will get a fair price. This is what keeps us going strong and what will sustain us in the future.”

MB Landscaping & Nursery, Inc. continues to work as a landscape contractor on both residential and commercial projects. They will take on a small project where they are simply planting a tree for a residential customer, all the way up to several hundred thousand dollar projects. Around 70 percent of their work is residential and 30 percent commercial. The landscape construction division was once the largest part of their business, but now it is the nursery and green waste divisions that seem to be the fastest growing. “Our green waste business model is a winner for everyone involved. We offer a fair dumping fee and then feel good about reusing this material on our own properties as compost or selling it to other nurseries or farms to be reused in the cycle of life,” says Martinez. “The green waste stays out of the landfills and that is also a great benefit to our environment.” In an effort to expand their green waste division, MB Landscaping & Nursery, Inc. acquired 260 acres in Lucerne Valley in 2002. After determining that it was not an opportune time to expand this division, the Martinez Family decided to grow alfalfa on the ranch and once again this thinking out of the box mentality has proven to be successful. “We sell to the local ranchers and my father has even invested in a few horses of his own,” says Martinez. “He is a smart man and always seems to find a way to make things work out for the greater good.” MB Landscape & Nursery requires the right heavy machinery to remain safe and productive throughout all of their divisions and business ventures. They currently maintain a fleet of machines that include skip loaders, skid steer loaders, wheel loaders, tub grinders, trommel screens and a long list of attachments and other implements. A few months back, MB Landscape & Nursery decided that it was time to add another wheel loader to their fleet. “We called all of the major brands to request a meeting with a sales representative and possibly set up a demo. Sonsray

8

Machinery’s response surprised us to say the least. Nicole Jones of Sonsray Machinery was out to see us the very next day with several ideas and financing plans for us to review,” says Martinez. “We eventually looked at several other machines, and afterward my brother, father and I decided on the Case 821F wheel loader. Sonsray was on top of the deal from the very beginning and I have to say that really impressed us. They even provided us with a loaner machine when our new tractor went back to their shop for the addition of protection gear, attachments, and other upgrades.” MB Landscape & Nursery uses their new Case 821F wheel loader at their green waste facility to load the tub grinder and to transfer material to locations around the yard. The Tier 4 Final 821F is an ideal machine for this application as it utilizes a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) solution that allows the engine to run at peak performance while providing industry-leading fuel efficiency. This makes the machine ideal for applications with variable power demands, with quick throttle response and massive torque. Federico Martinez is a self-made man living the American dream along with his wife, Maria and five children. He established MB Landscape & Nursery in 1988 with a dream of providing quality landscape construction at a price that makes sense. That idea grew to more than maybe even Federico Martinez imagined with two retail nurseries, one wholesale nursery, a green waste division, alfalfa production farm and a landscape construction & maintenance division that offer everything from landscape design and construction to irrigation construction and repair. They also offer outdoor lighting, retaining walls, masonry, fencing, water and hardscape features and the list just goes on and on. ary Horton began his personal journey in the landscape construction industry back in 1966 when he was assigned the yard care duties for his childhood home. His family struggled financially and Gary found a way to help out by parlaying his newly found landscape skills into a small business. From the age of 11 to 22, Gary performed landscape maintenance duties, first for neighbors, and then for the surrounding community. Quality and reliability were at the forefront from the very beginning and this is how Gary grew his business. In 1977, Gary joined as a partner in an existing landscape construction business, before obtaining his own license and founding Landscape Development, Inc. in 1982. In the early years, the company focused on services for the model home and production yard construction niche. After a few years in business, landscape maintenance services were added and eventually a green earth services division. During this time and while growing his fledgling business, Gary Horton completed the first of his 2 degrees in business management. Landscape Development, Inc. (Landscape Development) has continually evolved to meet the demands of an ever-changing and developing landscape construction market. Landscape Development was one of the first to form a design-build division

that supplies its clients with a seamless process from initial vision to the actual installation. This process has been so successful that the company decided to offer the service to their private homeowners through their Custom Gardens Division. Landscape Development now offers a full complement of services from landscape architecture, design-build services and landscape construction to maintenance, erosion control, and environmental mitigation. From the beginning, Landscape Development has relied on quality employees, sound business practices, and innovative technology to remain at the pinnacle of their profession. Albert Quiroz is the director of fleet for Landscape Development and he has been with the company

for more than 10 years. “Our bread and butter continues to be residential and new construction, primarily on tract home projects and for multimillion dollar estates,” says Quiroz. “We are also currently busy in downtown Los Angeles, where we are working on several podium projects. This can be a challenge as we work closely with crane operators in small, confined loft areas. The end result, however, has been very rewarding for everyone involved.” Landscape Development works as a general contractor on most of their home residential projects, personally performing or hiring the best subcontractors in the business for trades like, pool and water feature construction. They are currently working on

what might be the largest mansion in Southern California. It is located in Bel Air and Landscape Development is performing all of the landscape and slope design on this project. They also just recently completed a project in Malibu that exceeded $1million. It is in this area that they saved several homes in 2010 during the, at times treacherous, rainy season. Their erosion control division was mobilized and worked tirelessly to prevent the loss of many multimillion-dollar homes in Malibu. A video of their work in Malibu can be found at http:// landscapedevelopment.com/ movies.asp?id=136. “We are gearing up for the rainy season, and with what some say will be our most fierce El Nino yet, we are proactively preparing tens

of thousands of sandbags for use by our emergency services division,” says Quiroz. “We stand ready with hillside stabilization and erosion control crews that can be mobilized at a moment’s notice, day or night.” Albert Quiroz is responsible for dispatching the appropriate trucks and machinery for each project. He also oversees three machinery shops, manages all of the mechanics and drivers and generally takes care of the daily operations of their fleet of more than 200 cars and trucks and various construction machines. Landscape Development uses their construction machinery to load and unload materials and to move plants and construction items from staging areas to their final destination. “We own and maintain a fleet of skid steer loaders, compact excavators and skip loaders,” says Quiroz. “We recently added three more John Deere skid steer loaders to our fleet. We go with John Deere because we feel that they offer the best value and features available on the market. We go with Coastline Equipment because of their outstanding customer service.” Quiroz goes on to explain that his operators prefer John Deere controls because they feel that they are simply easier to use. “Coastline made purchasing our three new John Deere 332E skid steer loaders simple and painless,” says Quiroz. “Our representative, Julio Gomez, set us up with terrific financing and just an all-around great deal. I have worked with Julio for two years and when he promises something, he delivers. It is great to have someone like that on your side.” One of the new 2015 John Deere 332E skid steer loaders is being used at Landscape Development’s Castaic yard for use in their sandbag production operations. “Our new John Deere 332E has all the power you need to load the heavy sand into the hoppers of the machines that we use to fill the sandbags,” says Quiroz. “We currently have nearly 20,000 sandbags on standby and we are still producing more. Our new John Deere makes the entire process go faster and more efficiently.” According to Quiroz, it is the people at Landscape Development that make the difference. The entire staff is made up of high quality, educated individuals that are each uniquely trained and qualified in their field. The project managers are degreed architects and horticulturalists. Their business managers are MBAs and CPAs and their construction superintendents and foremen share many decades of construction experience. Landscape Development grew to more than 1200 employees before the recession took that number down to 200 in 2008. They have now grown back to 500 employees and show no signs of slowing down. They are headquartered in Valencia with satellite offices in Bakersfield, Nipomo, Clovis and Corona. hile grading on the San Francisco Peninsula, John Lyngso found that many of his jobs required the export of excess soil. He saw this as a business opportunity, and in the early 1950s, he purchased property in San Carlos to store excess soil and begin creating soil mixes. Then, one day, he received a request from a local contractor to bring in a load of quartz pebbles. This combined with the sale of custom soil mixes formed the beginning a more than 60-year legacy. Lyngso Garden Materials, Inc. (Lyngso) remains a family-run and owned business with long-term employees and a level of service that is unsurpassed. Terry Lyngso and her sisters, Linda Lyngso and Pamela Parkinson all work and share in the ownership of the family business. Terry Lyngso serves as the company president and has been part of the family business since the early 70s. She has studied and composted at the commercial and home garden levels. “All of our products are

ornamental stone and are very well-known for their organic compost, mulches and soil mixes. “We do a lot of custom soil mixing and we offer a wide variety of special composts and mulches backed by years of training in soil biology,” says Lyngso. The company also offers flagstone, dimensional stone, boulders, polished pebbles, pathway fines, organic fertilizers, clay pots, in addition to basic construction materials like sands, base rocks pea gravel, and drain rock.

Managing the traffic flow through the busy yard is often a challenge that requires the use of support equipment. Lyngso has invested in a fleet of all sizes of forklifts and flatbed trucks, as well as four Volvo wheel loaders. They purchased two Volvo L70F wheel loaders from the San Leandro branch of Volvo Construction Equipment & Services a few years ago and recently added two more. “We were very impressed with our initial purchase of Volvo wheel loaders, so we decided to add two more this year,” says Lyngso. “Our operators and service shop staff prefer the Volvo machines and we want to keep them happy. They are the perfect machines for getting our materials loaded quickly and

safely, which are both important to the continuing success of our operation.” Lyngso currently owns and operates two Volvo L70F wheel loaders and two 2015 Volvo L70H wheel loaders with Tier IV Final certification. These machines can take on many tasks with a wide range of attachments. The Volvo cab is designed for maximum comfort, visibility and productivity. The machines also come with a new and improved Volvo attachment bracket that offers industry leading versatility and astounding front visibility. “We have 70 plus products in bins and we use our Volvo wheel loaders, equipped with various attachments to load our products by both weight and volume,” says Lyngso. The company currently has buckets

from a ½-yard to 3-yard capacity. They also own a side dump bucket that, according to Lyngso, is perfect for precise loading of materials. Lyngso Garden Materials, Inc. is a family owned and operated business that has earned a reputation for being passionate about providing the very best possible service. Several of their employees have been with the company for more than 20 years and every employee contributes to the success of the company on a daily basis. “Vic Thomas started out working for the company while still in high school and is now VP of Sales and Marketing. He has been instrumental in the growth of our business and I appreciate his efforts very much,” says Lyngso. “James Kolter is our Vice President of

Pacific Weed Control, Inc. Utilizes the Competitive Advantage of Combining Highly Skilled Employees with Advanced Technology to Achieve Remarkable Efficiencies

eeds can create problems for industrial and commercial business operations and are at the very least a visual nuisance. Brian Child founded Pacific Weed Control, Inc. (Pacific Weed Control) in 2003 in order to provide industrial and commercial businesses with a higher standard of weed control services. “I had worked for another weed control company for more than 13 years before deciding to form my own company in order to implement my own ideas on providing the very best weed control management service,” says Child. “We have successfully combined the use of the industries best educated and trained individuals together with the most progressive methods and advanced technology. I believe this is why we have experienced such tremendous growth and customer loyalty these past 12 years.” Pacific Weed Control provides vegetation management services for private industry, including oil refineries and production fields, as well as

18

for the aerospace industry, electrical energy suppliers and other parts of the energy sector. Brian Child started out in 2003 with just two trucks and one other employee. He earned a degree in International Business with a minor in Spanish from Cal State Fullerton, but after accepting a job in the weed abatement industry, he found that he had a real knack for the business, along with some original ideas on how to operate safer and more efficiently. Pacific Weed Control has an herbicide application and vegetation management division and a mowing and brush clearing division. Both combine to eliminate and control vegetation through the use of spraying, industrial

mowing and ground sterilants. Much of their work is applied by trucks and spraying units, with hand crews available whenever necessary. The company now has more than 30 employees and nearly 20 trucks in their fleet. They also own and maintain two Cat skid steer loaders and a Massey Ferguson ag-tractor. “About a year ago, we were awarded a large-scale parcel project that required us to purchase some heavy construction machinery,” says Child. “This was our first experience with purchasing this type of equipment and I did all of the proper due diligence.” Child

studied and researched all of the major manufacturers and distributors of skid steer loaders in his area before settling on Caterpillar and their dealer, Quinn Company, out of City of Industry. “I narrowed it down to a few brands and met with their representatives to demo their machines,” says Child. “I felt most comfortable with the Cat controls and already knew of Quinn Company’s reputation for excellent service and support.” Child has a friend that owns a large concrete masonry company in Southern California. His

friend provided him with a reference to Dennis Madden, a Quinn Company sales representative. “My good friend had purchased multiple machines from Dennis and Quinn Company and he highly recommended them to me. Dennis was so helpful and knowledgeable and he helped to make the entire purchasing and financing experience painless.” Pacific Weed Control purchased their first Cat machine from Quinn Company several months ago. with a mower attachment. They also just recently purchased a 2015 Cat 246D skid steer loader equipped with a grapple attachment for picking up and hauling brush. “We had a small issue with one of the units early on and Quinn Company was on-site within hours. They took care us and got us back to work quickly

and that is the kind of support we need to be able to count on in this business,” says Child. I also let Dennis know that we were in the market for an ag-tractor with a PTO to run our new flail mower. He did not have what we needed in his inventory, but he went to the trouble of finding a great deal on a slightly used Massey Ferguson ag-tractor that is just perfect for our operation.” Brian Child makes it very clear that safety is job one at his company. “We have put several plans in place to assure that our employees remain out of harms way,” says Child. “I think we have done a good job considering

20

that we have not had a single lost time injury or environmental spill in the history of our company’s existence. There is nothing more important than the safety of our employees.” According to Child, Pacific Weed Control is currently taking on additional larger projects that will certainly add to their continued growth. “We have a great reputation for our high quality of work, along with efficient and reliable service that we continue to cherish and build upon,” says Child. “We hope to continue our amazing growth, but not at the cost of compromising our quality by either growing too fast or becoming too

CASE Construction Equipment and Sonsray Machinery have provided the use of a mid-sized excavator and two compact track loaders for the construction of a new outdoor landscape, edible garden and hardscape design by landscaping expert and TV host, Ahmed Hassan. The project – a landscape/foodscape and outdoor living/playspace installation at the Aster Street Gardens transitional housing project – is the work of Hassan’s organization of “Sustainable Heroes.” Sustainable Heroes is a freelance group of professionals including contractors, carpenters, landscapers, project managers, designers and more. The group travels the country and chooses humanitarian and sustainability

projects where they feel their charitable works will make a positive impact on a particular community and/or help bring awareness to a worthy cause and organization. This particular project partners Sustainable Heroes with Interfaith Community Services of Escondido, California. The equipment – a CASE CX75C SR hydraulic excavator, and TR320 and TV380 compact track loaders – were used in the earthmoving phase of the project and assisted with the demolition of unwanted plant material, and the placement and planting of new trees, shrubs and hardscaping materials. Hassan, a longtime TV personality who uses his blitz-style landscape makeover skills as a way of advancing charitable and

humanitarian efforts, sees the Aster Gardens project as “the perfect way to give back to both the community and a wonderful organization that does so much to help the less fortunate in the community during the Thanksgiving season and year-round.” “The capacity to pay it forward is one of our greatest human talents,” says Hassan. “Aster Gardens provides women, children, seniors, vets and others with a safe place to get their lives back on track after homelessness or difficult and traumatic life circumstances – the new landscape will provide their family complex with an outdoor living space and recreational area for the people who live there to relax, play and socialize,

while enjoying their natural surroundings. We are grateful for the participation of companies such as CASE and Sonsray who have donated their time, coordination and these extremely valuable resources to improve this community’s space.” “We’re inspired by the work Hassan and his team does, taking the craft and skill of landscaping and turning it into something that improves the lives of others,” says Jim Hasler, vice president – North America, CASE. “What his team has done with Aster Gardens is remarkable, and we’re proud our equipment helped make it happen.” More details and project photos can be viewed by following the Aster Gardens project on Twitter (twitter.com/STHeroesOrg/) or Facebook (facebook.com/ events/1650096175269411/), and via the #AsterGardens and #SustainableHeroes hashtags. Nixon-Egli Equipment Co. Celebrates 50 Years with Open House Celebrations at Their Ontario and Tracy Facilities No matter how you look at it, 50 years is a long time to do anything, let alone remain viable in the construction equipment industry. Nixon-Egli Equipment Co. has done this over three generations with unprecedented service and support. They recently celebrated this achievement on Nov. 3 in Ontario and on Nov. 5 in Tracy. More than 300 customers and friends of Nixon-Egli were in attendance. Employees past and present were there, along with the entire Nixon family. Several of their vendors were also on hand with displays including: Associated Wire Rope & Rigging, PB Loader, Link-Belt Parts and Rhino Parts, a division of Wirtgen American Parts. Ontario guests were treated to lunch via the Habit Burger truck, while the Tracy guests enjoyed hot and fresh pizza from Pizza Oven. Along with the food and refreshments, there were raffles, gifts and even a 50-year anniversary cake. Steve Nixon happily greeted his guests and thanked everyone who helped contribute to the company’s longevity and success.
