A NOTE FROM THE
editor
I can’t believe it is the end of the year and time for the holiday season. I’m a big fan of the holidays when we get to spend more time with family and friends. This has been a tough year for many, especially looking back at recent tragic events, including the devastating wild fires, hurricanes, and shootings. It’s a time to pull our loved ones a little bit closer and hug them tight. It’s a time to pause and appreciate what we have and what is important in life. To me, family is the most important thing, and that is one of the reasons I started Calabasas Style magazine. I wanted to start a magazine in an area with a great sense of family and community. Recently, one of my daughters, Katrina, who also writes for the magazine, was married, and now, my family has grown and I have a new son, Geoff. We have to enjoy these special times in our lives and treasure the memories. Our cover feature in this issue is the Murphy-Tuckel family who shares their amazing and hectic life with their two sets of twins. It takes a village to raise children, and Calabasas is that perfect village! Holiday shopping is a topic that people either love or stress about. To help make it easier, our holiday gift guide offers fabulous suggestions, and it is a perfect way to support our local businesses. From my family to yours, wishing you all a heartfelt and safe holiday season! Gayel Barnes Publisher/Editor stylepublishing@gmail.com

MONA FOUNDATION
GARDEN GALA 2017 ____________________________________ ____________________________________ Photography by Debbie Vaccarello On the beautiful fall evening of Sunday, September 17, Tammy Wood of Interior Archaeology and her husband, David, hosted an elegant gala to benefit the Mona Foundation. The event took place at their home adjacent to the property where the TV show The Bachelor is filmed—in the mountains above Malibu. Delightful refreshments and gourmet dinner, live music, and an auction featuring a curated array of fine home furnishings and a South Africa Photo Safari Package to benefit the Mona Foundation were enjoyed al fresco, amidst a beautiful rose garden and majestic views. One-hundred percent of the evening’s contributions went directly to the educational initiatives that Mona Foundation supports in Haiti, India, Panama, China, Brazil, Vietnam, Mongolia, and the United States. Mona Foundation supports universal education initiatives around the world which emphasize service to the community and increased opportunity for women and girls. The Murphy-Tuckels may perpetually have a lot going on, but they make it a point to always leave room for family time. They enjoy making family memories on their boat and in their home in Lake Arrowhead as well as by traveling around the world with a close group of families to places like tropical Cabo San Lucas and Mammoth and Utah for winter ski trips. A little closer to home, Jeff and Christina love entertaining friends and hosting parties at their gorgeous Calabasas home. Christina even hosts several annual events at her home, including the Holiday Gift Wrapping Lounge. This annual holiday event showcases Christina’s extensive collection of over 250 rolls of vintage, designer, and one-of-a-kind wrapping paper. As their twins grow in this dynamic community, Jeff and Christina feel incredibly lucky to be a part of such a tight-knit village. Calabasas has become an extension of family for the Murphy-Tuckels. Jeff and Christina, with the help of their supportive community, are bringing up four lovely little people with the potential for doing great things.

This past year alone, over 5,000 homeless veterans started living on the streets of Los Angeles, 60% more than the preceding year, and the number continues to grow. Donna Deutchman, president and CEO of Homes 4 FamiliesTM and a Thousand Oaks resident, acknowledges that California has more veterans than any other state in the nation. “These veterans were serving six to eight years,” she says, “and when they came home, they were couch surfing without a permanent home, living in the projects or living with a family of four in one bedroom at a relative’s. They were going to school during the day and doing shift work at night, trying to better themselves. They had been willing to serve and had been promised a shot at the American Dream.”

MARVIN’S
Gardens
By Lori Berezin Photography by Debbie Vaccarello Marvin Lopata and his wife, Judith, adore the outdoors. The couple lives on the East side of Calabasas above Mulholland Highway in Mulwood, backed by Greenleaf Canyon. Marvin works as a real estate appraiser and consultant, and his wife, a former commercial interior designer, currently manages office buildings. Marvin’s other passion, besides his wife, is gardening. When he was a young boy, Marvin worked for the neighborhood gardener, who taught him how to take clippings from different plants and root them. Eventually, he grew intrigued by cacti and other succulents. He finds time spent in the yard to be very therapeutic. When California was hit by the prolonged drought, Marvin grew more interested in plants that could be sustained without much water. He loves exchanging clippings with his friends. Gardening requires a combination of patience, talent, and stamina, plus a green thumb. Clearly, Marvin Lopata possesses these qualities in spades. n

typical arsenal of autumnal foliage or winter pine and poinsettia to help me set the stage for holiday festivities is a breath of fresh air. Now, instead of putting my gardens to bed in the fall, I look forward to refreshing them. I love to sprinkle the beds along our walkways with these cool weather annuals and ground cover, like baby tears, moneywort, and sedum. These cool-loving plants also look gorgeous arranged in pots of various sizes and shapes in luscious combinations of hue and texture that announce the holiday season in the vivaciously organic way only Southern California can. I love to create my holiday décor against this backdrop of living color which keeps going strong from autumn to the New Year. Rather than wading through the mass-produced options in stores, I’ve found that it takes just the tiniest bit more time (and usually less money) to create my own beautiful arrangements from natural materials. The more traditional spruce can be fashioned to make wonderful wreaths and tabletop arrangements, but so can native olive branches, eucalyptus, magnolia leaves, and succulents. Pots of rosemary, myrtle, jasmine, and lavender trimmed into cone shapes make tiny fragrant living Christmas trees that look amazing in groups of varied sizes and containers. Another plus to using these kinds of plant materials is that often they fit seamlessly into the greater setting of our indigenous flora and help bridge the more expected holiday materials, like pine and holly, both indoors and out.

Put your own spin on what nature provides. A few well-placed velvet bows, some dainty lights, and your own touch will add the festive sparkle. I have a box of special pretties that I keep tucked away to reuse every year. It’s full of anything that can embellish wreaths, garlands, and potted plants: gossamer wired ribbon, stiff velvet bows, and tiny battery-operated copper string lights. A nice benefit of using live plants and cuttings from your garden is that when you pack up at the end of the season, a box of these small additions takes up much less storage space than those big old boxes of fake greenery. In addition to ribbons, lights, and bows, I have a cherished collection of tiny birds with natural feathers that tend to find their way into my decorations. In my home, they are a big part of making our holiday feel festive. My mother-in-law has a set of antique sleigh bells that she attaches to the noble-fir wreath that greets us at her front door every Christmas. The fresh scent of fir and the sound of those sleigh bells is part of her special holiday tradition that we all love so much. Fresh and personal holiday décor…it’s only natural! Wishing you a happy and beautiful holiday season. Until next time, here’s to creating your own Noble Spaces! n

____________________________________ ____________________________________ Photography by Melissa Westervelt On September 27, Vista Ford/Lincoln of Woodland Hills transformed its vast car dealership into a party venue filled with guests from across the San Fernando Valley to host the 11th Annual Food & Wine Tour. The West Valley-Warner Center Chamber of Commerce worked hard to make sure the event was a success, and as always, it was. Members of the Chamber of Commerce joined together with community leaders and businessmen and women for the opportunity to explore new flavors and experience local-area favorites in the food and beverage industry. A myriad of the Valley’s most-loved restaurants and businesses showcased their food, wine, and services at the event. The Local Peasant, Maggiano’s, and Jimmy’s Famous American Tavern were just a few of the local West Valley restaurants and bars serving their hottest menu items. Local exhibitors pouring their favorite wine included Fairwinds West Hills Retirement Community and Sunpower by Green Convergence.

Q
My friend suggested I get a pneumonia booster shot. Is this something new and do I need one? I am 72 years old
and received a pneumonia shot about 13 years ago when I was a smoker. I quit 10 years ago.
A
First of all, let me congratulate you on quitting smoking, which is the best thing you can do to improve your overall health! Next, let’s talk about pneumonia,
which is an infection in the lungs causing coughing, fever, and trouble breathing. The infection can be caused by bacteria, viruses, and even fungi. Viral pneumonia cannot be treated with antibiotics or prevented with a pneumonia shot. However, the pneumonia is often a complication from the flu, so the best way to prevent viral pneumonia is with an annual flu shot. If you haven’t received this year’s vaccine, I suggest you do this as soon as possible. Predictions are for a nasty and early flu season based on activity in the southern hemisphere and documented cases already in the U.S. Viral pneumonia is more common in children and bacterial pneumonia is more common in adults. There are many types of bacterial pneumonia, which can be treated with antibiotics and prevented with immunization, which you had 13 years ago. There are two pneumonia vaccines; the newest one has been around about seven years so you would have received the original, Pneumovax 23, which covers you against 23 strains of bacterial pneumonia. The newest vaccine, Prevnar 13, covers an additional 13 strains. Both vaccines are recommended for everyone over 65. They are recommended for individuals under 65 with specific medical conditions. The timing of the two vaccines gets complicated so I would advise people to consult their doctors or pharmacists for their individual situations. In your case, since you received the Pneumovax 23 before you were 65, you should get the Prevnar 13 as soon as possible, followed by another Pneumovax 23 one year later. This should be all you need…until the CDC changes its recommendations or a new vaccine comes out.

The local Life Is Why sponsor was Dignity Health, and major sponsors of the Go Red movement were Macy’s and CVS Health. Go Red for Women’s mission is to raise awareness of heart disease and stroke as the number-one killer of women.

Ask the
Pediatrician Break out the tissues. It’s cold and flu season! Sick children everywhere are performing the music of cough cough, sneeze sneeze, achoo! So how do you keep your children safe from the common cold and flu this winter?
For the common cold, the best prevention is frequent hand washing, plenty of sleep, exercise, and good nutrition (including probiotics and vitamin D). To avoid the flu, there’s a less time-consuming answer: the flu vaccine.Just getting a flu vaccine reduces your risk of serious illness and death from the flu by 50%. Flu vaccines are recommended for everyone six months of age and older. To help protect your newborn, make sure everyone else at home, or anyone caring for him or her, receives a flu shot.Other than a sore arm, side effects from the flu vaccine are rare. And contrary to popular belief, you can’t catch the flu from the flu shot. Okay, so you don’t think getting the vaccine is worth the time? Then prepare for potential trouble. If you are otherwise healthy, having the flu is probably the worst you will ever feel. The flu causes fever, cough, sore throat, headache, chills, and muscle aches. Most victims are sick for a few days to a week, but some people get much sicker and even need to be hospitalized. Believe it or not, the flu still causes thousands of deaths each year. Remember, the best way to prevent cough, sniffles, and colds in your home this winter is to make sure everyone gets flu vaccines, washes their hands, eats healthy, exercises, gets plenty of sleep, and gets regular check-ups. That way your home can be filled with pleasant holiday music rather than the sounds of cough cough, sneeze sneeze, achoo! Tanya Altmann, MD, FAAP, is the founder of Calabasas Pediatrics. What separates you from your competitors?
What do you like to do outside of work?
I feel that my background experience in advertising and marketing separates me from most of my competitors. Having worked and negotiated national advertising campaigns gives me the per fect background for negotiating for my clients at Berkshire Hathaway. My marketing budget exceeds most others because I know that the very best photographers and marketing means a higher price for my sellers. With the amazing resources at Berkshire Hathaway and my focused attention to detail, my referral business is booming.
I love living in Southern California and enjoy playing tennis, going to the beach, hiking, and spending time with my husband, Ki, and visiting our daughter at USC and seeing the Trojans play football. We love to go to Rams games and enjoy trips to Napa and Santa Barbara wine country.
Why have you been so successful?

My “specialty areas” are Calabasas and Hidden Hills, but I was raised in “The Valley” so I’m very familiar working from Studio City to Westlake Village. I’ve built long-term relationships with so many of the agents in these areas that they respect my work ethic and always welcome showing my listings or getting a client’s offer from me.
Are there any new and exciting developments taking place in your business? All you have to do is turn on your computer and you’ll see that the real estate industry has evolved into “all things social media.” Along
with my brokerage, I’m an advocate of capitalizing on these venues to capture the majority of the buyers who are out there looking and to make sure my sellers’ homes have maximum exposure to procure the best buyers for their homes.

What areas do you specialize in?
Any final remarks? Buying or selling a home is one of the biggest transactions that you will ever go through in your life. Pick an agent that will be trustworthy and truthful with you. I always say to my clients, “Do you want me to tell you what you want to hear or what you should know?” Honesty has always been my one and only policy.
Honesty has always been my one and only policy.

eal estate agent Patte Gilbert, with Wish Sotheby’s International Realty, is one of Calabasas and Hidden Hills’ most-selected agents. In her 28-year career, she has maintained her popularity with clients as “the agent you can work with one-on-one.” Her success lies in the fact that she works equally with both buyers and sellers so she always knows exactly how much her buyers should pay for a home and the amount a seller should ask. When not selling real estate, Patte likes to take one fabulous trip each year, play Mahjong, support the local schools, and work with a number of charities. In work as well as life, Patte’s mantra has always been: “There are no problems, just solutions.”

Why have you been so successful?
How do you give back to your community?
Work ethic and building on a successful reputation have been key. When clients trust you and your expertise, the business is there. It’s vital to deliver on what is most important to your client. We work with city organizers, investors, and builders to know projects that are starting up in this area. In this competitive business, our service and marketing are a stand out.
Being a member and having served as a deputy with the Calabasas Chamber of Commerce and supporting charity events such as the American Cancer Walk. Every year, our family does the Calabasas Classic Run, which has benefitted families of cancer. In addition, Tracy started the Random Acts of Kindness Party, which has been a huge success in the community.
What areas are your specialties? Marketing, market knowledge, and getting high volume of looks at a property. The more people that view a property, the more likely we are to create multiple offers. But you have to know the market, where the market is in the real estate cycle, and where it is going in order to market effectively to obtain success for your client.
In nearly 30 years of real estate, I have found that the key to success is surrounding yourself with other like minds and creating a group dynamic that is second to none. As the number-one residential group in our office seven years running, I have created a team of agents, escrow and title, and other support persons that allow me to do what I do best—real estate, real estate, real estate.
What areas are your specialties? As original owners in The Oaks, I have garnered a razor-sharp knowledge of our local luxury community. I try to preview every new listing to provide my clients a first-hand account of the property before they step foot
in it. My other specialty is investment properties. I have found over the years through my own personal forays into rental properties that in the long run, there is no better source of retirement and contributes to a balanced portfolio. Owning something tangible and collecting monthly dividends is a great feeling.

What makes you the best in real estate?
Clearly, real estate is a people business and my ability to connect with new clients as well as 30-year clients is truly rewarding. Handing over a set of keys and seeing the smiles on my clients’ faces is a feeling that everyone should experience once. Fortunately for me, after thousands of times, it never gets old.

How do you give back to the community?
From very early in my career, I immersed myself in the different estate markets of Los Angeles. I have been representing multimillion-dollar homes nearly all of my career and have been credited with many notable sales. Among them L.A.’s largest residential sale of 2006, the legendary Harold Lloyd estate.
My life changing event came in the form of my oldest son, Kevin A. Cordasco, who was taken by childhood cancer at 16 ½-yearsold after nearly a seven-year battle. His story is well-known locally and well chronicled. As the founder of the Kevin Cordasco Foundation: Something Yellow, along with my wife, Melodie, our mission is to honor and support the many heroes of childhood cancer.

Larsen’s ’Tis the Season for
STEAKHOUSE
IN WOODLAND HILLS
By Lori Berezin Photography by Marvin Steindler
T
here’s no better way to celebrate the holiday season than to gather with friends and family for a great meal. Larsen’s Steakhouse in Woodland Hills offers all the tender aged meat and succulent seafood you crave. “The Larsen’s dining experience is like no other,” notes Charles Shumar. “We value our great relationships with the members of our communities. Our staff are seasoned professionals who are committed to a higher standard of guest service. This is what separates us from our competition.” For the past two years, Chef Logan Shumar and his brother, General Manager Charles Shumar, have been serving perfectly aged steaks and mouthwatering chicken and seafood to discerning guests at The Village at Topanga. Both brothers attended Calabasas High School, where they were enrolled in the inspirational culinary program taught by Chef Kerri Allen. Larsen’s also manages several other locations throughout Southern California and Nevada. The company started in Encino in 2008. Owner Flemming Larsen has had an extensive career that includes establishing several restaurants, a butcher shop, and a market.
Aging gracefully Larsen’s dry ages their prime meats to tenderize the steaks with their own natural enzymes. This makes the steaks taste more rich and buttery. They unlock full flavor with a two-week wet-aging process to preserve the flavor of their marvelous marbled beef. This time-honored technique ensures guests receive the most tender, delicious steaks every time. For those diners seeking something other than masterly prepared steaks, Larsen’s also offers delectable king crab legs, gigantic chilled seafood towers stuffed with sweet snow crab claws, briny oysters, shrimp, mussels, and succulent lobster tail. Their fresh fish and other seafood are flown in daily and served directly from the sea to your table. They also offer hearty salads and tasty soups, such as a classic Caesar, burrata and tomato salad, and French onion soup. Their rich, buttery

lobster bisque will make any seafood lover blush with delight. And the Alaska king crab still retains the refreshing flavor of ice-cold northern seas.
Choose your sides At Larsen’s, it’s a pleasure to eat your veggies, especially when they come so deliciously prepared. Panko-crusted onion rings, sugar snap peas, lobster mashed potatoes, and purple cauliflower gratin are just a few of the scrumptious sides to get you in the mood for the main course.
Sipping If you’ve come in search of the perfect cocktail, Larsen’s delivers. Try their Cinnamon Penicillin with Highland Park 12 Scotch, lemon juice, honey and ginger syrup, and a touch of cinnamon. It’ll cure whatever ails you, making you feeler better in no time. The Larsen’s Standard is their refreshingly appealing house cocktail, with muddled cucumber, mint, simple syrup, and your choice of Tanqueray 10 Gin or Kettle One Vodka shaken and served up with a crisp cucumber slice. Or perhaps you’re more in the mood for the Gold Rush, with Eagle Rare Bourbon, honey syrup, and tangy fresh lemon juice, or one of their Pilsners or Pale Ales.
Larsen’s caters to your needs Whether you are a party of one, two, or 12 hungry diners, Larsen’s caters to all your wishes during the holiday season and throughout the year. When it’s time to celebrate someone’s birthday or anniversary, Larsen’s offers plenty of space, plus private dining rooms, to ensure a magical meal for your special day or night on the town. The restaurant’s unique specialties include a tender filet sashimi. Chef Logan seasons and rolls their prime filet mignon in black and white sesame seeds, sears it extremely rare with just a hint of a crust, and then slices it really thin. He then layers it all over spicy wasabi mashed potatoes, topped with homemade eel sauce and chives, for a meat-lover’s mouthwatering take on sashimi. Their Beef Wellington begins with a 12-ounce, USDA, prime, dry-aged filet mignon, seasoned and seared then brushed with tangy English mustard. The filet is coated in a delicious mushroom duxelles mixture and wrapped with prosciutto. It is topped with puff pastry glazed with egg yolk and baked to perfection. MEDITERRANEO:
NUTELLA CHOCOLATE TRUFFLE Ingredients 1 cup dark chocolate morsels 1/3 cup Nutella 1/2 cup cream 2 tbsp. butter ¾ cup chopped hazelnuts, toasted Cocoa powder, for dusting
Directions Put dark chocolate, Nutella, cream, and butter in a bowl. Place bowl in a double boiler and heat until melted. Fold in the chopped hazelnuts. Transfer to a Pyrex container, cover with plastic wrap, and chill for at least two hours, or until chocolate becomes firm enough to scoop into balls. Scoop chocolate using a small scoop or teaspoon and form into balls in the palm of your hands. If the truffles start to stick to your hands, dust your palms with cocoa powder, then continue to roll. Dust each truffle with cocoa powder. Refrigerate in an airtight container, but bring to room temperature before serving for best taste and texture. For variations, you may leave hazelnuts out of chocolate mixture and instead roll truffles in finely chopped hazelnuts. Also, you may add 1 tablespoon of espresso powder one and one-half tablespoons of coffee liqueur or 2 tablespoons orange liqueur and one teaspoon grated orange zest.

THE STONEHAUS:
TOFFEE BANANA RUM CHEESECAKE Cake
Filling
1 box yellow cake mix 1 egg 4 oz. unsalted butter, melted
16 oz. cream cheese, room temp ½ cup sugar 2 eggs 2 tsp. vanilla extract 1 cup toffee bits
Banana Layer 2 tbsp. unsalted butter ¼ cup brown sugar ½ tsp. cinnamon 3 tbsp. dark rum 3 large firm bananas, sliced
Directions Cake: Preheat oven to 325 degrees low fan for convection oven, 350 degrees for regular oven. Lightly grease a 9” springform pan. In large mixing bowl with electric mixer, paddle attachment combine cake mix, eggs, and melted butter, and mix until smooth and combined. Press evenly into bottom of prepared pan. Banana Layer: Heat sauté pan over medium high heat and add butter and sugar until melted and bubbling. Stir in rum and cinnamon, add bananas, and stir to coat. Pour evenly over crust. Filling: In same mixing bowl, beat cream cheese and sugar until smooth. Add eggs and vanilla mixing until smooth. Mix on low to medium heat to avoid beating too much air into the batter. Stir in toffee bits. Pour batter over bananas smoothly, evenly, and tap on counter to avoid air bubbles. Place pan on baking sheet and bake 60-75 minutes. Cake top will brown, but you can tent with foil after 30 minutes to avoid overbrowning, just make sure foil doesn’t touch cake. Cook until set around edges, but still jiggly in center. Cool on rack to room temperature, then refrigerate at least six hours or overnight.

MASHED BLACK TRUFFLE CAULIFLOWER
LOBSTER MASHED POTATOES
2 lbs. cauliflower, trimmed, cut into florets 16 oz. garlic mashed potatoes 5 garlic cloves, sautéed in olive oil until soft and golden brown One each 1 1/4 lbs. live Maine lobster, fully cooked 3 tbsp. cream cheese 1 oz. heavy cream ½ cup butter, unsalted 3 oz. whole salted butter, softened 1 cup parmesan cheese, grated and 6 tbsp. to top dish 2 tsp. Old Bay seasoning ½ cup heavy cream 2 tbsp. charred scallions (we recommend taking scallions and ¼ cup half and half putting them on the grill to char them, it really adds to the flavor) 1 tbsp. black truffle shavings 2 tsp. fresh chopped parsley ½ tsp. truffle oil, white 1 ½ tsp. salt and ½ tsp. black pepper Directions Start with 16 oz. of garlic mashed potatoes, and keep hot
Directions
Set up a steamer on the stove. When the water is boiling, add the cauliflower to the steamer. Do not boil the cauliflower directly in the water. Cover the steamer and steam the cauliflower for approximately 10 minutes, until tender. Not al dente, but not mushy. Meanwhile, sauté the garlic until soft and golden brown. Place the cauliflower into a food processor or blender. Mix at medium speed until well broken up, but not pureed. Add all of the other ingredients except the truffles. Continue to blend until fairly smooth. The mix should still have bits of cauliflower, not completely pureed smooth. Remove the mix and place it in a mixing bowl. Fold in the truffles. Divide the mix between three oven safe serving dishes. Top each dish with grated parmesan cheese. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Bake the mashed cauliflower for approximately 10 to 12 minutes until cheese is golden brown. Serve immediately.

until serving. Remove the shell from the cooked lobster, reserving all the edible meat. Chop up the lobster meat and add it to a medium sauté pan over medium-high heat. Add 1 oz. heavy cream and 3 oz. whole salted butter. Add 2 tsp. of Old Bay seasoning, and bring the lobster to a low simmer, until the butter has melted and the seasoning has been incorporated completely. The mixture should be hot and frothy, creamy and still emulsified. Add 1 tbsp. of the charred scallions. Place and mound the hot garlic mashed potatoes into a large bowl for serving. Spoon the hot pieces of lobster meat and pour melted butter sauce over the top of the garlic mashed potatoes using all the lobster and all the butter sauce. Garnish with the remaining 1 tbsp. charred scallions, sprinkle with chopped parsley, and serve immediately.

PUMPKIN FESTIVAL ____________________________________ ____________________________________ Photography by Marvin Steindler Calabasas first got its name from the Spanish word “Calabaza.” Can you guess what that means? Surprisingly, it means pumpkin or gourd! Thus, it is only fitting that the city of Calabasas hosted its annual Pumpkin Festival on October 21 and 22. Continuing a more-than-40-year tradition, the festival aims to bring the community together for two days of entertainment surrounding the season’s most prized harvest, the pumpkin. Presented by the City of Calabasas and the Calabasas Chamber of Commerce, the festival was a huge hit. The Pumpkin Festival was housed alongside Lost Hills Road and Juan Bautista de Anza Park. Not only was there a Saturday morning costume parade, but the festival offered live music,

Calabasas Style: Pet Sponsors
Adopt a Fur Baby! Rescue • Foster • Adopt • Love Shelter dogs just need someone to believe in them. There are millions of homeless dogs in the world, and a large number of them are currently in shelters waiting for a forever home, or to be euthanized in some cases. Adopting from a shelter saves a life. So if you are thinking about bringing home a new furry friend, consider all the benefits of a rescue adoption. Adopting from a shelter gives a pet a chance in a happy home, and you also make room at the shelter for another animal with nowhere else to go. One of the big myths about rescue pets is that all of the animals have behavioral issues or have been rescued from abuse. In truth, many shelter animals end up there because their owners can no longer care for them. If these dogs pictured have been adopted, there are always more dogs waiting for a good home. Vista Ford Racing Car Show By Dustin Troyan Photographed by James Stanley The Vista Ford Racing Team is nothing short of incredible. Based out of the Vista Ford Oxnard dealership, they are some of the most passionate people within the car dealership world. Not only are they innovative with modifying new vehicles, but they support the community every chance they get and are very patriotic. For the past handful of years, the Vista Ford Oxnard dealership organizes and hosts an annual 9/11 remembrance car show. This annual tradition touches the hearts of so many within the car community, and we are all grateful to Vista Ford for taking the time and effort and making the investment in such an endeavor. The patriotism and passion are so greatly appreciated. James Stanley, who is part of the Vista Ford team, kicked the event off by singing the national anthem. It was truly a wonderful moment. James is also a veteran, having dedicated 13 years of his life to our country. Coachmen Car Club Founder Skeeter Rader gave a great speech reminding us all how lucky we all are, and the crowd went crazy. Vista Ford titles the show the “All American Car Show, and there was no shortage of domestic cars on display. Form classics to hot rods and late-model muscle cars, hundreds from the patriotic car community attended, and everyone had an outstanding experience. They were all grateful to be there and to support the event. Thank you Vista Ford Racing, you guys rock! n
