t is Saturday morning in The Oaks Estates of Calabasas. The McGraw family sits on a blanket in their backyard enjoying doughnuts from their local favorite, Blinkies Donuts of Woodland Hills, planning their day. Warm, golden rays of Southern California sun caress the grinning faces of two very happy children. While the kids savor the doughnuts, their loving parents, Jay and Erica, savor the moment. For the McGraws, family is always the highest priority.

“And amazing grandparents,” adds Erica. “To see ‘Dr. Phil’ be such a soft and loving grandfather is so fun, and Robin always make the kids feel like they are the center of the universe. They are a special part of the kids’ lives.”

Jay received his B.S. in psychology from the University of Texas and his J.D. in law at Southern Methodist University. He is the president and CEO of Stage 29 Productions. _______________________________________________________________________________ He also serves as the executive producer on numerous TV productions, such as The Doctors, Bull, and The Amber Rose Show. Jay is a #1 New York Times best-selling author of numerous books focused on helping Jay and Erica, along with their two children, Avery and London, teens with life strategies. moved to Calabasas from Beverly Hills almost six years ago. With Jay originally from Texas and Erica from Minnesota, the couple “TV has played a central role in our lives,” he says. “Erica and I wanted to raise their children in a place that reminded them more were both cast in the show Renovate My Family, which is where of home. While the great schools and gorgeous houses originally we met. ay and Erica’s 6-year-old daughter, Avery, is a first grader at beloved Viewpoint School of Calabasas. She loves to dance and play tennis with her mom and little brother, who she adores. London, the McGraw’s 5-year-old son, attends Cornerstone Preschool. He also enjoys tennis, golf, and baseball, especially his Dodgers, “GO BLUE!” Jay and Erica cannot wait for London to start Viewpoint School next fall. The family shows their support for the school they love so much through volunteer work. From memorable nights of chips, salsa, and margaritas at Sagebrush Cantina (where Erica and her sisters first visited over 19 years ago) to turtle watching at The Commons, the McGraw family loves that Calabasas is a community where “everyone knows your name.” As Erica says, “We have so many friends here. We love raising our family in such a supportive community.” And Jay adds, “We have found everything we could want, here in Calabasas.” When the McGraw family is not out on the town in Calabasas, they are out traveling the world together. “You really get to know someone when you travel with them,” Erica explains. “Jay and I discovered that we usually wake up in the morning on the same page. Be it mimosas and brunch or a trip to the gym together, we are usually side by side.” From relaxing at their home in Cabo San Lucas to snorkeling and waterskiing in the Sea of Cortez to being snow bunnies in the Alps, traveling for the McGraw family takes away the stress of daily life. “It reminds me of when we first started dating,” muses Jay. “It brings you back to being infatuated with each other,” adds Erica. “It reminds us to just be best friends.” While the family is not out traveling, they love enjoying their beautiful home in The Oaks Estates. This fun-loving family delights in having friends and family over for backyard barbecues, swim parties, tennis, and Bocce ball tournaments. Above all, the McGraws make time for family. From making it a priority to have family dinners together to family bonding mornings to start the day right, this McGraw unit knows that the strongest bond of all is love. n If you know a great family or individual to profile, please contact us at: stylepublishing@gmail.com.

Amazing Grayse A New Line by Marie and Kelly Gray

By Pax Ansley Photography by Marvin Steindler

S

ynthesis is the combining of separate elements to form a coherent whole. The beauty of synthesis exists in the juxtaposition of seemingly unrelated facets. It exists in the birth of something new entirely. From the inspired minds behind the timeless elegance of St. John’s Knits and the edgy rocker style of Royal Underground comes a new line that is sure to turn heads. Brilliantly talented mother-daughter duo Marie and Kelly Gray have teamed up yet again to bring new project Grayse to the fashion world and, more importantly, to our own backyard. Westfield Topanga Shopping Center of Canoga Park is home to one of three Grayse boutique stores to open in Southern California. With intricately detailed leather jackets, embellished tops and dresses, and Italian silk-printed tunics, Marie and Kelly’s new line is all about edgy glam combined with

56

Calabasas Style

an element of timelessness. While Kelly and Marie have had somewhat contrasting styles, Grayse is a whole new energy of collaboration, a “fusing of souls,” as Kelly puts it. “My mom and I have always been polar opposites when it comes to our styles,” she says. “Mom has always focused on a timeless elegance and high fashion. She designs for herself. For me, I have always liked extremes. I focus on edginess and a kind of rock star feel. I pull a lot of inspiration from pop culture.” In Grayse, the two worlds have blended seamlessly. Marie Gray, originally Marie St. John, started out as a model and then turned to design. In 1962, a future giant of the fashion world was born: St. John Knits. The collection included tailored suits and dresses as well as casual sportswear. Marie stayed with her company until 2005, when she left to devote time to other passions, such as children’s charities, golf, education, and the arts.

Kelly Gray was born into the fashion world and grew up at St. John. As a 4-year-old, she walked the factory floor with her mother, showing her innate sense of style and her eye for detail. By her mid-20s, Kelly had become the creative director for St. John. Just before the age of 30, this up-and-coming designer had become the company’s CEO. In the years after leaving St. John, Kelly founded Royal Underground with Motley Crue bassist Nikki Sixx. They designed a contemporary collection known for its edginess and rock star glam, a far different feel than the tailored elegance of St. John. While Kelly explored the extremes of her own style, mother Marie started to feel the itch to design once again. Hence, the mother-daughter duo started to conceive a collaboration, a new line in the making.

The first collection of Grayse was released in the spring of 2013. With elements of both Marie and Kelly vividly present, the pair became more sensitive to each other than ever before. Marie helped Kelly to soften her tone, and in turn, Kelly inspired Marie to design with more drama. Above all, the duo agree, “We want women to feel sexy wearing our clothes. We want them to feel comfortable. When a woman is comfortable in what she is wearing, it allows her inner confidence to shine through. And what is more sexy than that?” Grayse continues to grow by reaction and response from women everywhere. They create iconic looks with incredible attention to detail, fabulous fabrics, asymmetrical designs, and of course, plenty of sequins. n Westfield Topanga 6600 Topanga Cyn. 13TH ANNUAL

“Jake’s Ladder”

Photography by Melissa Westervelt The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation was pleased to present the 13th Annual “Jake’s Ladder,” celebrating Jacob Dyne, who was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (CF) at the age of 14 months. Cystic fibrosis is a life-threatening genetic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of more than 30,000 Americans. The average life-expectancy for someone living with CF is 37.8 years. The CF Foundation is the world’s leader in the search for a cure, and nearly every CF-specific drug available today was made possible with its financial support. The festive event was held at The Commons at Calabasas on Sunday, September 18, and all the proceeds from the event benefited the CF Foundation. Top teams were Jake’s Ladder, raising $18,441, and Rozanne Burstein, who raised $10,999. Top participants included Shellee Dyne, Rozanne Burstein, Jonathan Burstein, and Tanya Altmann. Q&A with Doctor Beauty By Anna D. Guanche, MD Bella Skin Institute

A

s a dermatologist specializing in beauty, I have been dubbed “Dr. Beauty,” which I consider a high compliment. In practice for over 14 years, I have noticed that some questions come up over and over again. I answer with as much specificity to the questioner as possible, but here, I have written some general answers.

IF I DO BOTOX® ONCE, WILL I HAVE TO KEEP DOING IT? Short answer: no. Botox ® is a very popular procedure. It has minimal to no downtime and, when done artfully, leaves

62

Calabasas Style

the face smoother but still with the ability to make some expression — in other words, a natural look. It generally lasts four months from the time of injection, but some don’t want to go “all the way back” to their original wrinkles, so they will do a three-month to three-and-ahalf-month cycle. If you do it once, you will not have to keep it up, but you will want to. If anything, that four-month period of not wrinkling the face will leave you a little better off. That’s four months less of furrowing and deepening lines. So, again, you will not have to keep doing it, but it is likely you will want to.

IF I DO FILLER AND THEN DECIDE NOT TO KEEP IT UP, WILL I END UP WITH MORE WRINKLES? Absolutely not — at least not in my hands. It would be an inordinate amount of filler that would stretch skin to the degree that it shrivels up like an empty balloon when no longer filled. This is simply not the case. In fact, even when filler has “worn off,” which can take five months to two years depending on the type, there is usually a residual correction. Most patients feel they are better off long term after the procedure.

DOES RETIN-A THIN OUT THE SKIN? Retin-A (tretinoin) is one of the most powerful anti-aging topicals that we know of today. People think it thins the skin because during the initial six weeks to three months of treatment, the skin is a bit pink, fragile, and sensitive. This is called the ‘retinoid reaction,’ and is surmountable with patience, moisturization, and consistent continuous use. If use is interrupted for more than seven days, the retinoid reaction restarts. The end of the reaction is the time when your body up-regulates the enzymes necessary to properly handle the Retin-A on your skin. At this point, the skin cells divide at a regulated rate and the surface of the skin continues to be micro-exfoliated without irritation. The skin, at this point, is actually thicker, and the dermis (the collagen layer under the five layers of epidermis) is plumper.

DO YOU BELIEVE IN SUPPLEMENTS? WHICH ONES ARE BEST FOR THE SKIN? Absolutely! I take about 25 supplements a day. For the skin, I love glucosamine with chondroitin sulfate, which supports collagen production and reduces inflammation. Also, I love Biotin, a co-factor for hair and nail growth. I have found that Viviscal PRO ® is a great supplement that incorporates Biotin and marine extract in order to optimize hair growth. When I know that I will be out in the sun, I take Heliocare ® , a supplement that provides the body with an SPF of 8. It is a great addition to sunscreen. I have been testing out Celastin Co Pep 12 for the past few months, and it appears to have promising results. The promise of this peptide is that it will reduce fine lines and result in more radiant skin by supporting elastin and collagen. We shall see. Last but not least, I take a few tablespoons of virgin pressed coconut oil daily. This can be added to coffee or used in cooking. It provides moisture and smoothness to the skin, especially as the winter months approach.

WHAT IS THE BEST MAKEUP TO USE? The best makeup to use is the one you have tried on for at least a day and that doesn’t make you itchy, puffy, or break out. And one that matches your skin color! I find trial and error is important, and that is why makeup counters exist! Try the makeup on for a day and see how

your skin handles it. For acne-prone skin, I recommend starting with non-comedogenic mineral makeup. Personally, I use Chanel Double Perfection compact powder over Chanel Vitalumiére Aqua.

WHICH SUNSCREEN IS BEST? This is a loaded question. There are many great sunscreens out there. To avoid chemicals, you can use zinc oxide or titanium-dioxide-based products. These don’t tend to sting the eyes, but they are a little more likely to block pores, unless micronized. Chemical sunscreens are more cosmetically elegant and do not block pores as much. My favorite daily sunscreen currently is Elta MD UV Clear or Tinted SPF 46. My favorite waterproof sunscreen is Anthelios Cellox Shield SPF 60, and my favorite physical blocker is SkinCeuticals Physical Fusion UV defense SPF 50. For Rosacea or acne or pigment-prone skin, we recommend specific skin-type based products.

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT HORMONE REPLACEMENT? Hormones definitely affect the skin. Menopausal symptoms include thinning, ‘crepey’ skin, which is a direct result of estrogen withdrawal. Changes in thyroid hormone levels can cause thinning, brittle hair. With professional counseling, serum-hormone-level evaluation, examination, and thorough family history to determine suitability, hormone replacement can be an excellent option. Estrogen in moderation can improve the skin tone. This, of course, can be balanced with testosterone, which can improve libido and muscle tone but should not be used excessively as it leads to enlarged pores, coarser skin, increased hair growth, and steroid acne. Optimizing hormone levels can lead to an improved quality of life. As usual, when we harness nature in our favor, we need to be conservative in our approach to avoid causing new problems. Finding a trusted endocrinologist is important in this endeavor.

cific cell type. Now, these delicate cells have to match your DNA so that your body won’t reject them so you cannot just inject other peoples’ or embryos’ stem cells into your skin and expect them to work. Yes, I said embryos, which means there are docs in Southern California injecting cord-blood-based or embryo-based stem cells into some very special faces. The body will simply reject these cells unless they are an HLA/ DNA match. When stem cells are derived from a subject’s own body, there is a great chance of survival. And then, the next challenge is to induce them to differentiate into the type of cell we need them to be: to produce collagen or, better yet, elastin.

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR YOUR SKIN, DR. GUANCHE? An easier question would be: What do I not do for my skin? I have tried every procedure that I offer at my office at least once. First and foremost, I always wear sunscreen and use a full range of skin care products. I have done Thermage a number of times, as well as Fraxel and Ultherapy. I regularly but conservatively use Botox ® and fillers. I do a VBeam laser treatment and light Jessner’s peel about monthly for maintenance. I came across a quote on the internet that I love: “Beauty is being the best possible version of yourself on the inside and out.” I am Dr. Beauty because I absolutely adore what I do. My passion is to help people match their inner youthful, beautiful selves to what they see in the mirror. It is playing a part in people’s self-actualization. It is truly a privilege. n The statements in this article are for general informational purposes only and do not substitute for individual medical advice.

WHAT ARE STEM CELLS AND DO THEY WORK? I believe stem cells do work when harvested from the fat or bone marrow of the treated individual. First, let me briefly explain what stem cells are: They are very delicate cells that have all of the same DNA as your other cells but haven’t locked into their duty yet. They are not kidney or cornea or skin cells. They are pluripotent cells, meaning they can (and I emphasize ‘can’) turn into a spe-

Pulling off a Really Big Event... at home! ASID

N

othing presses the spaces that we create into service more than a big gathering. Most of us will, at some point or another, find ourselves inspired to host a big event. Large or extra-large, within our private circle or encompassing the greater community, chances are there will come a time that we pull out all the stops and welcome a much larger group than would typically fit at our dining room table. My design maxim has always been to “Create Noble Spaces,” and event hosting sees those spaces rise to their ultimate joyful potential, allowing us to come together and foster meaningful connections. My husband, David, and I have had the pleasure of hosting more than a few super-sized events in our time. Here are some of the steps we take to pull

one off! First things first: Take a creative but realistic look at the space you have to comfortably host an event. Make sure you take into account the area necessary for tables, seating, heaters or umbrellas, and a stage and dance floor if you are considering hosting live music. If you have ever attended a great event, you know how important music is in setting the tone. Are you able to put the necessary time into the curation of a playlist and the coordination of sound equipment or will you have a DJ or a live band? Will you be handling the food yourself? Will it be ordered in or can you consider a caterer? Also, consider whether your restrooms are up to the challenge; if they aren’t, portable toilets might need be part of your plan. Parking is a lead contender in determining the number you can accom-

modate. Can guests safely park themselves or will a valet service be necessary? Many of these decisions might be resolved by the boundaries of your budget, and if they aren’t, try to prioritize by thinking about what has made the biggest impact on you at the events you’ve attended in the past and go from there. Allow yourself plenty of time to prepare: For an event of more than 50 people, I like to begin my planning at least three months in advance. Time is key in allowing us to feel calm and ready, and some aspects of the party will need more time than others. If you will be drawing on power for lights, music, or food service, make sure that you test the capacity beforehand. There are a lot of great ways to end a party, but losing power halfway through when there are 150 people feting it up in your backyard is not one of them! It might be necessary in some cases to actually have an electrician out to make sure you have adequate amperage and outlets to support your plan. Time allows us to do the obvious, like repaint a room or add accessories, but make sure that the exterior of your home is on the purview of your party planning as well. Have the windows cleaned, walk the grounds to make sure that all of the outdoor lights are operational, and make sure that vines haven’t grown over the house numbers. When the basic decisions have been made and you have a clear idea of how many people you can accommodate, it’s time to think about invitations. I think it’s important to find or create an invitation that reflects the spirit of the event. Beautifully handcrafted invitations are always a treasure to receive, and nowadays, Etsy is an amazing resource for them. However, the advent of the paperless invitation is a revelation, and there are many excellent options: Greenvelope, Punchbowl, Minted, Evite, and Paperless Post all have excellent offerings. Through these sites, you can create and customize a realistic and stunning invitation, compile your guest list, and track the RSVPs. There are a host of time-saving organizational features available through all of these with which a standard paper invite cannot compete and which make the electronic invite one of my favorite party planning innovations.

Command Performance Catering

I like to plan the menu — everything from the libations to the dessert — as well as the timing of each presentation in detail to ensure each offering is not only delicious, but reflects the essence of the event and keeps the energy flowing. Simply grilled organic meats, seafood, and vegetables with beautifully arranged crudité, cheese, and fruit are always a hit and can be straightforward, cost-effective choices. I love to serve one-bite desserts that can be displayed en mass (doubling as decoration!) and easily enjoyed while mingling. When it comes to beverages, I like to make sure that the “potions” are as refreshing and interesting for those who imbibe as well as those who don’t. I also try to offer plenty of delicious vegan and gluten-free selections for those with dietary restrictions, and I make sure to note this in some way so guests are aware that they can partake without concern. I insisted on doing all the cooking for the first big events we hosted (my collection of pots big enough to bathe small children is a testament to these days), but I’ve learned over the years that it’s almost impossible to be a great host and handle the fare. This truth was made crystal clear to me at an event we attended to benefit the Westport Historical Society at Martha Stewart’s fabled Turkey Hill property. Martha, the caterer extraordinaire, was calmly present as she graciously visited with every one of her guests, while the caterers she hired did an amazing job feeding the crowd. Point taken! The added benefit of hiring a caterer is that they can be a mainline to many other rental services you might require, such as tables, linens, dishes and cutlery, lights, heaters, florists, even valet and portable toilet rentals. I’ve been lucky to work with a few caterers who were happy to handle the coordination of these services for me at no added cost. Next on my list is one of my favorite topics no matter the context — floral arrangements! If you use a florist, provide a sample of the invitation so they can get the flavor of the event and possibly coordinate the tones of the florals to the invitation. It’s also a good idea to provide images of particular arrangements that appeal to you and discuss the floral material they recommend so there are no unpleasant surprises the day of the event. If you share my penchant for floral arranging, you might want to do the florals yourself. I have compiled a collection of floral containers that I haul into service

Command Performance Catering

for big and small events. They are of all different shapes and sizes but all the same color and texture — ivory matte bisque. None of them were expensive, but they look great arrayed on various tables with almost any type of arrangement displayed in them. I like to visit the wholesale floral markets a few weeks beforehand to match the seasons’ offerings with the “story” of my event. Great resources in our area are Mayesh Wholesale Florist in Van Nuys and Far East Wholesale Flowers in Agoura Hills. This September, we had the pleasure of hosting over 150 guests at our home in the Santa Monica Mountains for our second annual Garden Gala and Concert to benefit Mona Foundation (monafoundation.org), a non-profit organization that supports grassroots educational initiatives all over the world. It was a moving experience. Not only did we spend a joyful social afternoon and raise significant funds for Mona Foundation, but our circle of friends grew around something larger than ourselves. It was an unforgettable event, but because of the detailed planning that went into it, it was unforgettable for all the right reasons. Peace, Happy Holidays, and here’s to creating your own Noble Spaces! n

Hope and Harvest

Photography by Tibor Deme Photography & Will Edwards

On Sunday, September 11, Andrew Firestone returned for a second year to inspire record-breaking giving in one evening by a sold-out crowd of 320 regional leaders, businesses, residents, law enforcement officers, and fire and rescue representatives at Interface Children & Family Service’s “Hope & Harvest, an Evening in the Vines” benefit. Honorees included Victor Flores, Jeremiah Kieffer, Andrew Salinas, and Sharon Giles. Proceeds funded vital programs that protect and heal children, youth and families who are in the midst of crisis and prevent abuse and relationship violence from occurring in the first place. Guests enjoyed live entertainment; delicious, award-winning, locally farmed cuisine; fine wine; and extraordinary auction items and experiences. They also viewed Interface’s Project Hope art exhibit containing narratives provided by domestic violence survivors depicting hope, survival, and triumph. More than $275,000 was raised to shelter victims escaping domestic violence, rescue homeless youth, and provide child-abuse prevention and treatment and parent education programs.

10TH ANNUAL WEST VALLEY

Food & Fine Wine Tour Photography by Morey Spellman On September 21, the Porsche/Audi Auto Gallery of Woodland Hills transformed into a party venue filled with guests from across the SFV to host the 10th Annual Food & Wine Tour. The West Valley-Warner Center Chamber of Commerce worked hard to make sure the night was a success, and it was. Community leaders and business men and women had the opportunity to explore new flavors and experience food and beverage favorites from local-area vendors. Many of the Valley’s most-loved restaurants and businesses were in attendance to showcase their food, wine, and services. Local West Valley restaurants and bars like HQ Gastropub, Maggiano’s Little Italy, The Villa, The Local Peasant, and more served their hottest menu items. In addition, exhibitors like Oak Crest Academy, Trader Joe’s, Fairwinds - West Hills Retirement Community, and Allstate Insurance poured their favorite wines.

Tech Is Cool

But Don’t Forget the Jewelry

By Marc Cohen

I

t’s hard to believe we are almost at the end of the year and already making plans for 2017. As we head into the holidays, we all run into the annual problem: What do I buy for my spouse, significant other, or the kids? Well, let’s explore some of the cooler tech items; but first, get your batteries fully charged and ready to go. If you travel, check out the Barracuda. It’s a collapsible carryon suitcase with both an ergonomic handle and a built-in USB charger. It’s very clever as it also comes with a built-in tray that can handle a laptop. You can wait for your flight while fully caffeinated because it also includes two cup holders. Rounding out the perks, this handy device gives you a GPS tracker to help you locate your luggage and inform you when your baggage has arrived at the terminal. It retails for around $300. Check it out at barracuda.com.

If you are looking for a tech gift that doesn’t break the bank, take a look at the Amazon Fire Tablet. It’s actually an excellent device for the money, starting at only $50. It includes a web browser and social networking and allows you to stream from the Amazon library of movies and TV shows. While it’s not as useful and dynamic as an iPad or full android tablet, it’s a terrific tablet for anyone on a budget. They make great gifts, and sometimes Amazon has a buy-four-get-one-free offer.

Everyone is now talking about 4K televisions. The prices have dropped dramatically over the past year. They originally ran for as much as $25,000, but now, you can buy one for as little as $500 depending on size. While the content is still sparse on the 4K network, we are beginning to see more broadcasting in 4K. The networks did broadcast the Summer Olympics on a special 4K channel. The Samsung KS8500 is an excellent option. Selling around $1300, it actually features a curved LED display, HDR technology, and many of the smart TV features we have come to enjoy. Home safety has become a much greater issue; you don’t want to open your front door for anyone that knocks. The Ring Video Doorbell is a great solution. It’s easy to install and allows you to see and talk to whoever shows up. It retails for around $170 and comes in several colors. It is also water and humidity resistant. Be safe. It’s worth the money. Enjoy the holidays no matter what tech you decide to buy. If you buy a tech gift for your spouse or significant other, make sure you include a really nice piece of jewelry. Trust me. No matter what it costs, it’s worth it. n

See you on the radio! If you are anything like me, you are frequently surrounded by three to five remote controls — one for the TV, one for the DVR, and so on and so forth. Logitech makes a device called the Harmony Elite. It’s one of the best on the market. With one nifty controller, it can control most devices you have; in fact, it can control over 270,000 items.

I am honest to a fault! With my buyers, even if I find a house that they really like, I will often say, “I think there may be something better out there for you.” I won’t sell a house just to make a sale. With my sellers, if we come to an impasse on a list price or staging their home, I’ll look at them and say, “Do you want me to tell you what you should know or what you want to hear?”

What do you feel is the most rewarding aspect of your work?

every time to see the look on their faces when we’ve found “The One!”

Any final remarks you want to make to our readers? Selling a house is easy; getting through escrow is challenging. When escrow opens, I like to think of myself as a conductor of an orchestra, leading my string section (mortgage broker), winds (title), percussion (inspections), etc. The music can only sound good if you lead well, and that’s what I pride myself on doing…conducting the orchestra with finesse until “the close.”

Being one of the most recommended names in the real estate industry. Knowing that people recognize that I care about the quality of my work. The fact that my past clients now are referring me to their children and employees to purchase or sell their homes is the highest compliment one can receive.

What makes you one of the best in real estate? From very early in my career, I immersed myself in the different estate markets of Los Angeles. I have been representing multimillion-dollar homes nearly all of my career

and have been credited with many notable sales. Among them L.A.’s largest residential sale of 2006, the legendary Harold Lloyd estate.

How do you give back to the community? My life changing event came in the form of my oldest son, Kevin A. Are there any new and exciting developments taking place in your business? Real estate has evolved into a complex business. The skills required to guide clients through the sales process have become bewildering, and only a small proportion of agents are equipped to facilitate transactions. More transactions will be conducted by fewer well-trained agents, resulting in a higher level of professionalism in our industry.

What trends do you see for the 2017 real estate market? Our market is transitioning from a strong seller’s market to a more balanced buyer/seller environment. Price increases have pushed affordability lower and values

higher. Expect softening as interest rates rise and inventories of unsold homes increase. This mild price correction will be temporary and will help stabilize home values, allowing for a robust market as we move toward 2020.

Any final remarks you want to make to our readers? My company has earned a reputation of leadership in the real estate community for marketing exceptional homes. Our network of luxury agents represents decades of experience catering to the needs of high-profile clientele. Above all, we are always willing to go the extra mile for them. What do you specialize in and what is your philosophy as realtors? Our expertise is representing residential estate properties throughout the West San Fernando Valley and Greater Los Angeles. We provide our clients with the highest level of service to reach the best results and satisfy their real estate goals. Our exceptional integrity, trustworthiness, negotiating skills, and effective marketing strategies are reasons our clients pick us over others and refer us to family and friends.

Why should a seller choose your services? A home is typically the most expensive business transaction someone will be involved with in his or her life. You want somebody trustworthy whom you can rely on. We understand the importance of pricing properties correctly and using internet visibility and effective marketing to sell homes for top dollar in the quickest timeframe possible. Our efforts, combined with Coldwell Banker’s unparalleled online presence locally, nationally, and

internationally, serve our clients best.

I pride myself on being honest, trustworthy, and knowledgeable in the real estate market.

A

gents of LA luxury real estate agent and manager Paige Gordon doesn’t need to boast about his achievements. His clients and 20 years in the industry speak volumes for him. Clients repeatedly note how Paige goes above and beyond their expectations, responds quickly to all their questions, and paves a smooth path to home ownership. They also say he’s a great negotiator. Growing up in Westlake Village and living all over the San Fernando Valley and Ventura County, Paige possesses extensive knowledge of the area. He is committed to helping buyers and sellers understand every step of the process and remains on top of the constantly evolving real estate market. His firm specializes in both residential and commercial real estate, which gives Paige an even broader perspective in matching the ideal property and client.

What makes you one of the best in real estate? I put my clients first and everything else second. Nothing is more exciting to me than the gratifying feeling I get from helping people meet their real estate needs. You can count on me to always do what’s in a client’s best interest. I pride myself on being honest, trustworthy, and knowledgeable in the real estate market. What helps separate us from our competition is that we own the

media company many agents use to market listings. I don’t sell homes; I sell a lifestyle.

What are the biggest obstacles your clients face today and how do you help them navigate through those challenges? Most people have never been in a transaction like this before and, with so many papers and deadlines, they need someone who can guide them through the process. My biggest reward

is watching buyers get the keys to their new home, knowing I helped them achieve their goal.

Are there any new and exciting developments taking place in your business? We just opened up a brand new office on The Landing in Westlake Village. We will also be opening three new locations soon.

Pricing a property just right means you have to be very analytical in knowing and understanding the comps. Real estate, however, is not only about number crunching and market research; there is a human side to real estate. A home is one of the biggest assets a person will sell or buy in their lifetime. In the luxury real estate, market you are not only dealing directly with your client but often times with their lawyers, CPAs, and business managers. All of my combined skills result in successful sales.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of your career?

I truly understand that a home sale or purchase is not a small undertaking both financially and emotionally. I thoughtfully guide my clients through every step of the process. After successful negotiations, it is rewarding to call my clients with the news: “We recorded today” or “They accepted our offer.” The tears of joy are priceless.

What do you like to do outside of work? I am a wife and mother of three wonderful children and our loving beagle, Walter. I am a marathon runner. I support nonprofit charitable organizations ranging from animal welfare to cancer research.

Ask the

Pharmacist

Q A

There are so many types of flu shots this year. How do I know which one to get?

Yes, there are more options than ever this year. The “classic” flu shot covers three strains of influenza, two Type A and one Type B. Flu viruses are constantly changing, so the vaccine composition is reviewed each year and updated as needed. The World Health Organization recommends which strains should be included and then the FDA makes the final decision for the U.S. based on which influenza viruses are making people sick, the extent to which those viruses are spreading, and how well the previous season’s vaccine protects against those viruses. Some manufacturers include an additional Type B strain. This shot is called the “quad,” because it covers four strains of influenza. At this time, the CDC does not have a preference for the use of one over the other. It is your personal choice. Both the three-strain and four-strain versions are available as a preservative-free option. These do not contain thimerosal, which is a type of mercury. Pregnant patients or those allergic to thimerosal may choose this option. There are also two egg-free formulations for those allergic to eggs. There are two high-dose options available to patients 65 and older. Aging decreases the body’s ability to develop a good immune response, so these options produce higher levels of antibodies. One vaccine uses larger amounts of antigen in the vaccine and the other adds an adjuvant to improve the body’s immune response. The CDC has no preference for one of these over the other. Finally, if you are needle-phobic, you have three options. First, the intradermal vaccine, which is injected into the skin (not muscle) and uses a needle 90% smaller than a regular needle. There is also a jet injector that uses a high-pressure, narrow stream of fluid to penetrate the skin instead of a needle. Lastly, there is the Flumist nasal spray. However, the CDC does not recommend it this year due to lack of effectiveness the past 3 years. With so many options to get vaccinated this year, “just do it”. Any flu vaccination is better than no vaccination. Consult a healthcare professional for the best option for you. Brenda Johnson, R.Ph. MEDITERRANEO: BUTTERSCOTCH PUDDING

THE STONEHAUS: FALL QUINOA SALAD

Ingredients

Ingredients

Serving Size: 6 6 egg yolks 2 oz. butter 1 cup brown sugar 1/2 tsp. salt 1/3 tsp. vanilla extract 2 1/3 cup heavy cream Garnish: Whipped cream Caramel sauce (recipe follow), sea salt, roasted peanuts

Serving Size: 6 1/2 bunch Tuscan kale (also called lacinato kale), washed, stems removed and leaves cut into 1” strips 1 cup quinoa, rinsed well 1/4 cup blanched hazelnuts 4 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil 2 cloves garlic, thinly sliced 1/3 cup chopped fresh parsley 1/4 cup chopped fresh mint 1/4 cup dried cranberries 1/4 cup crumbled goat cheese 1 scallion, washed and sliced thin 2 1/2 tbsp. fresh lemon juice Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper

Directions In a large bowl whisk together the egg yolks and set aside. Melt the butter over medium heat, whisk in the brown sugar and salt, stir in the vanilla and cook over medium heat until sugar darkens slightly and takes on a caramel fragrance, about 5 minutes. Turn the heat to medium low and whisk in the cream pouring slowly. The sugar will harden but will dissolve as you stir. Stir until it just begins to boil. Remove from heat and temper with egg yolks. Strain and pour into serving containers. Bake in water bath at 325 covered until custards are just set but still jiggly about 50 min. Caramel Sauce 1 cup sugar 1/4 cup water 1/4 of a stick butter 3/4 cup heavy cream Combine sugar and water in heavy bottom pan and cook until deep amber. Add the butter and stir until it melts and is well-blended. Add the cream a little at a time and stir, the sugar will harden but melt again. Stir until completely smooth. To serve top with a dollop of whipped cream, sprinkle with Maldon Salt, or other sea salt, drizzle with caramel sauce and chopped roasted peanuts.

Directions Heat 1 tbsp. of olive oil in a sauce pan and cook quinoa over medium heat until lightly toasted, about 2 minutes. Add 1 3/4 cups water (or use low-sodium chicken broth) and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer, covered, until the liquid is absorbed, 10 to 15 minutes. Remove from the heat and let sit, covered, about 2 minutes. Meanwhile, “massage” the kale strips with 1 tbsp. of olive oil by rubbing between fingers until glossy and tender. Toast the hazelnuts in a skillet over medium-high heat, stirring, until golden, about 3 minutes; transfer to a plate. Add the remaining olive oil and garlic to the skillet and cook over medium heat, stirring, until golden, about 2 minutes. Transfer the garlic to the plate, reserving the oil. Fluff the quinoa with a fork and spread on a sheet tray to cool. When quinoa is cool add the nuts, garlic, reserved oil, parsley, mint, cranberries, goat cheese, kale, and lemon juice. Season with salt and pepper and toss. Adjust with additional lemon juice or olive oil if necessary.

Kosher salt and ½ tsp. black pepper, freshly ground 2 tbsp. fresh basil, chopped 3/8 cup parmesan cheese – 12 month, grated

Serving Size: 8 8 large shells to cook the scallop in if a shell is not available at your local market then you can use a small cast iron dish. 8 Boston Jumbo Scallops or your favorite type of scallop (Jumbo) 1/2 lb. of bacon (cooked and diced) 1/2 lb. unsalted butter 1/4 cup soy sauce 6-8 shiso leaves (fresh/julienned) (Serves 8)

Directions; Using a small pot on the stove, add the soy sauce and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Once soy sauce is ready add the unsalted butter and whisk it to help emulsify. Lastly fold in half of the shiso leaves and set it aside. To complete the recipe, you can use your oven or a barbeque. At the restaurant we use our Robata Grill. Preheat oven to 400 degrees or turn your barbeque on to high heat. Take the 8 scallop shells and add 2 tablespoons of the butter/soy mixture to each shell. Once the butter is on each shell you can add a pinch of bacon to each shell. Place the raw scallop on top of the butter/soy mixture and then place them directly on the barbeque or onto a sheet pan if you’re cooking them in the oven. Cook the scallop for 3-4 minutes on either side. Once the scallop is cooked through, remove them from the barbeque or oven and place them on your serving dish. Garnish the top of each scallop with crispy bacon and the remaining shiso leaf.

CALABASAS

FESTIVAL

Photography by Marvin Steindler Did you know that Calabasas got its name from the Spanish word “Calabaza, meaning pumpkin or gourd? Thus, it is only fitting that the city of Calabasas hosted its annual Pumpkin Festival on October 15 and 16. Continuing a more-than-40-year tradition, the festival strives to bring the community together for two days of entertainment surrounding pumpkins. Presented by the city of Calabasas and the Calabasas Chamber of Commerce, the festival was a huge success. The Pumpkin Festival was housed alongside Lost Hills Road and Juan Bautista de Anza Park. Not only was there a Saturday morning costume parade, but the festival offered live bands, marketplace vendors, scrumptious food, pumpkinfilled treats, and pumpkin painting and pumpkin-carving stations. This affair was a family-friendly event as kids, along with young-at-heart adults, rejoiced in taking part in Halloween carnival games and gushing over the reptile and bug shows.

What is your Legacy? By Mark Wendell

H

ow should your family successfully transfer wealth to benefit not just the next generation, but many generations? It starts with the first step, exercising immediate and ongoing financial planning, a process to grow and protect assets, covering all of your household’s present and future financial requirements. The second step, estate planning, is designing a sound legal foundation through wills, trusts, and other legal instruments to smoothly transfer those assets to intended heirs with a minimum of complications, maximum tax efficiency, and well-defined outcomes. The third step is to spend many years consciously preparing a legacy through heritage planning, a process of laying a foundation to prepare heirs to manage both financial and emotional inheritances. With proper attention, heritage planning serves as a vital step to help shape and guide the financial and estate planning of current and following generations. At the heart of heritage planning is open communication among family members across generations. It’s difficult for eventual heirs to plan their own futures if they do not know what they will be inheriting. However, with frank and detailed information, they can not only manage their own lives and finances responsibly but prepare their own estate planning and legacy planning to benefit their children. It can be said that the greatest gift we give our children is not financial assets, but the information they need about the

166

Calabasas Style

financial assets they will receive, together with a personal family emotional legacy that is the living human heart and soul of any inheritance. Many people make the mistake of treating wealth transfer as one event rather than an arduous lengthy journey. Preparing for wealth transfer provides an extended opportunity to instill an emotional legacy: composing and defining values, clarifying intentions for monetary inheritances, and memorializing lifelong learned perspectives that will influence many generations to come. There is a reason families are able to establish and maintain a multi-generational legacy. It is because they remain strong and closeknit across generations and have many definable elements of success in common that intentionally teach and transmit to succeeding generations this formula as part of their legacy. Trusts and wills are precise legal statements, but they aren’t personally or sensitively worded, which can easily breed conflict among family members. Occasional family meetings and open discussions familiarize heirs in a personal manner with an estate’s legal documents, such as a trust’s intended purpose, and allow for adaptation to changing personal circumstances and, most importantly, address sources of discord as they may occur. A system of family governance through family councils can be an effective method of preparing succeeding generations for the responsibilities they might

one day bear after an inter-generational wealth transfer. Including outside professionals in family meetings, rather than being invasive, can help assure that heirs appreciate and are comfortable with expert guidance. Family members may participate in stewardship duties, such as philanthropic, mentoring, and educating activities to focus on preparing the next generation. This participation in the process of building an inheritance can assure that neither its values nor the family’s ideals will fade away as it passes from generation to generation. Most of us have a desire to pass on a legacy that’s more than merely financial assets. What we often lack is a formula for success. Heritage planning is really an ongoing cycle of honest and open communications among all connected family members that begins very early in the wealth transfer process. Its goal is to transfer not just numbers on account statements and balance sheets, but also values, stories, wisdom, life lessons, and intimate family traditions. T

he auction scene at Monterey Car Week was a spectacle unto itself. With every major auction house present, tens of millions of dollars exchanged hands over the course of the week. The estimated sales surpassed $174 million. As speculation goes, many collectors and investors realized that a collectible vehicle might be a better investment than a traditional one. Certain cars “just keep going up,” and they seemingly have no end in sight. Provenance and racing heritage always play a role in pricing as well as how rare a vehicle might be. For those in the collector world, to have the rarest car is often a feather in their caps and knowing that there is no other vehicle to compete with a specific model, well, that is worth paying the price for. This year, a 1939 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B brought just under $20 million. Yes, you read that right, just under $20 million. This car was believed to be one of seven examples ever produced and to be derived from Alfa’s racing program. It was also noted to be one of the most advanced vehicles of its time and one of the most notable “pre-war” cars ever produced. Would you pay $20 million for a rare collector car? Well, if this year’s auction season in Monterey proves anything, it is that cars bring the money. There is never a shortage of buyers for the right car at about any price. If you ever get the opportunity to visit Monterey Car Week, make sure you visit the auctions. It is an incredible experience. n
