is the season where magic is all around us as we rejoice in the holiday spirit and embrace the coziness of winter. In our holiday issue, you will find many creative and insightful gift ideas to make your holiday shopping rewarding, while supporting local shopping centers and boutiques. It’s an exciting time in the community. Check out our holiday guide filled with fun, unique ways to embrace the magic of the season. Whether it’s catching a ride on The North Pole Express, ice skating in Woodland Hills or volunteering – there’s not a shortage of meaningful things to do. Most importantly, the holidays are really a time to appreciate family. Our cover family, the Penners, unconventional in the traditional sense, demonstrates that love can be thicker than blood. On the culinary front, we are excited to share the story of Brent’s Deli, all the way back to its beginnings. We also feature six favorite recipes from the very best chefs in our area. We wanted to bring the gourmet kitchen to you — so you can recreate these holiday-inspired dishes for your Thanksgiving dinner, Christmas feast or New Year’s bash. If the sunny California weather leaves you craving a winter wonderland to get you in the holiday spirit, we bring you Aldik Home. Transformed for the holidays, their beautifully decorated showroom could be exactly what you need to deck the halls and break out the holly. Also featured in this issue are local winemakers who will inspire you not only to go wine tasting, but to look into planting a vineyard of your own. Their wines, many available for purchase or tasting locally, would be the perfect addition to your holiday table. Stay tuned for our upcoming January/February issue where we focus on welcoming 2016 with a commitment to our health, well-being and bridal season! To all our readers and advertisers, we wish you a very happy holiday season from our team at Calabasas Style.

Love is Thicker Than Blood The Penners of Hidden Hills

By Pax Ansley Photography By Marvin Steindler

F

amily is a concept that means different things to different people. The word may bring to mind warm thoughts of laughter and smiles or, perhaps, thoughts of challenges and tears. At the end of the day, family is made up of the people who love you unconditionally and who will be there for you when you need them. The love that binds a family together is much thicker than blood, and often, people have to find their own family, the place where their hearts truly belong, if they don’t have a conventional, biological family. The Penners of Hidden Hills are that family — one that shows that family is not only made up of the loved ones you are born with, but also those you choose to love and have in your life. As the family patriarch Ethan says, “The Penners are a family that defies categorization.” The Penners’ story begins with Ethan. He was born in the Bronx, New York. Ethan grew up to be a successful and well-known entrepreneur in the finance and real estate industry. Living in San Diego, he also became a loving father to two wonderful children from what is now a previous marriage. Always putting his children first, he was hesitant to marry again. He worried that his children would end up in a lessthan-ideal stepmom situation. That is, until he met Marisol. With her,

22

Calabasas Style

his fears disappeared. He fell in love with her not only as a person, but for how she treated his children as if they were her own. She cared for them and loved them as he did. He had found the missing piece to the growing and blossoming Penner puzzle. Marisol was born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela. She became a top-level professional triathlete, cyclist, martial artist and bodybuilder. Marisol married Ethan and became a Penner in 2001. She has been a personal trainer to numerous high-level clients, including Anthony Robbins, Deepak Chopra and Barbra Streisand. Marisol has made her passion for wellness and fitness a family trait, and she and Ethan can often be found pursuing athletic endeavors together. They especially love to cycle the hills of Calabasas. As a team, Ethan and Marisol have raised five children together and, as Ethan happily says, “That is where the magic happens.” Daniel Penner, now 24, is in a master’s program at Stanford University. Not only is he working toward his degree in applied mathematics and statistics, but he is also a research engineer for Shazam. Through his Japanese studies, he has taken several trips to bring liberal arts studies to rural Japan. Daniel is also a recording star and his band The Divergence’s music can be found on most digital download sites.

Rebecca is a 17-year-old student at Fusion Academy in San Diego. She has excelled in her studies and has been recognized with numerous academic awards, including honor roll and a national award of excellence in health science. Rebecca is also an accomplished actress and singer, having performed on stage since age 6.

After calling many exciting places home, including San Diego, Hawaii, Santa Monica and New York, the Penners settled in Hidden Hills in the summer of 2014. Ethan remarks that they have become “infatuated with the Calabasas lifestyle and community.” Strolling past a Calabasas Little League practice, you may see Ethan

In early 2003, Marisol gave birth to the third Penner child, Julianna. Ethan remembers that little Julianna “was in such a rush to join the family that she forced her way out into the world seven weeks early.” Julianna, now 12-years-old, is a high-level competitive swimmer. She swims for Viewpoint’s 7th/8th-grade squad as well as the Royal Swim Club.

and Michael coaching Everest’s team to victory. If you frequent Calabasas farmers market, you will be sure to see health-conscious Marisol picking up some nutritious provisions for her family. The Penners of Calabasas are living proof that, no matter the distance, the heart always seems to find its home. n

The Penner’s family size grew by two in 2003. Originally from Marisol’s home country of Venezuela, Michael Angel’s birth father passed away, unfortunately, at a very young age due to cancer. Then 14years-old, Michael was left without a family to call his own. During a visit to the U.S. in 2002, Michael met Ethan and the rest of the Penners. The rest is history; he found his home. By the summer of 2003, he moved in with the Penners in San Diego, matriculating at San Diego Jewish Academy where he was challenged to learn in both English and Hebrew. Now 26, he owns the first Los Angeles-based franchise of Fitwall. Fitwall — rated by Refinery29 as one of the top gyms, changing the way we think about working out — is a 40-minute class with an effective blend of strength, cardio and flexibility training.

If you know a great family or individual to profile, please contact us at: stylepublishing@gmail.com.

In 2005, the Penners started a process that would end with the youngest Penner joining the family. Everest Gobena, now 6, was adopted from Ethiopia at age 2. His playful, sweet and innocent nature is exactly what the Penner family needed to complete their circle.

Pumpkin Festival

Did you know that Calabasas got its name from the Spanish word “Calabaza, meaning pumpkin or gourd? Thus, it is only fitting that the city of Calabasas hosted its annual Pumpkin Festival on October 17 and 18. Continuing a more-than-40-year tradition, the festival strives to bring the community together for two days of entertainment surrounding pumpkins. Presented by the city of Calabasas and the Calabasas Chamber of Commerce, the festival was a huge success. The Pumpkin Festival was housed alongside Lost Hills Road and Juan Bautista de Anza Park. Not only was there a Saturday morning costume parade, but the festival offered performances by live bands, a DJ dance arena, marketplace vendors, scrumptious food, pumpkin-filled treats, pumpkin beer, pumpkin painting and pumpkin-carving stations. This affair was a family-friendly event as kids along with youngat-heart adults rejoiced in traveling down a giant slide, taking part in Halloween carnival games and gushing over the reptile and bug shows.

Beauty Things By Anna D. Guanche, MD Bella Skin Institute

…Skin that glows brightly and leaves your mate smitten, Paraffin hand dip with warm, silky mittens, Brown and pink packages tied up with strings, These are a few of our favorite things… Smooth hair and tight skin and full lips and one chin, Creamy complexions and thighs toned and abs thin. Procedures are offered, low downtime a must; After a moment, you will say, “Bella or Bust!”

T

he holidays are upon us, and we want to look and feel our best. Soon, it will be time to decorate, cook and shop for everyone. Before getting into the thick of it, take a moment to care for your own concerns. Let’s face it, the gift of beauty is something we usually give ourselves because it is difficult for others to predict what our next beauty move will be (and this is not to exclude men who make, what I call, ‘handsome moves.’)

Sparkling Eyes The eyes are the window to the soul, as they say, and they are the focal point of the face. We do not want to frame the eyes with shabby curtains that say, “I’m worn out.” We want them to look vibrant, expressive, alive. The Thermage® skin-tightening procedure can firm the skin around the eyes and provide a subtle brow lift with no downtime. A bit of strategically placed Botox® can provide a pretty brow lift and arch (when done correctly) and reduce crow’s feet. A great eye cream, such as Lumiere Riche (my favorite), will help to smooth out fine lines under the eyes.

Luscious Lips The number-one, most-popular cosmetic procedure in our office is Juvederm® injections. Juvederm is a hyaluronic acid gel that provides a smooth, natural-looking result. When performed artfully, lip injec-

tions result in a naturally restored or enhanced look. Fuller lips are a feature of youth and sensuality. Dull, dry, cracked, winter lips can be remedied with Healing Balm®, a lip balm that is an anti-inflammatory that promotes healing. And barring any procedures, some lip plumpers really do work to plump and hydrate the lips — Sexy Mother Pucker™ from Barney’s, for example.

Sculpted Features We can now literally sculpt the face with a needle. With the FDA approval of Kybella™, we can now reduce double chin fat without surgery. This is a very popular procedure among men and women alike. With fillers such as Juvederm®, Voluma® and Belotero® or Radiesse®, we can add volume strategically. We can improve dark circles by reducing the hollows under the eyes. We can add a lift and fullness to the cheeks that provides a return to youthful features. Augmenting the jawline of either men or women for the sake of defining it and flaring it restores a youthful look as well. Earlobes that have lost tone can be rejuvenated. We can even reshape the nose, camouflage bumps and sculpt the nasal tip. Over the past few years, advanced techniques in fillers have given us a fountain of youth, provided, of course, that the injections are done artfully and in moderation.

Glorious Hair Go darker. The fall and winter trends are for darker hair to frame fairer skin. This is great news for both your hair and your skin. Darker hair color treatments do far less damage to the hair shaft than bleaching or highlighting, and they leave the hair looking glossy. My favorite supplement for fuller hair is Viviscal® Professional. Some of us at the office have tried it and have been impressed with the results. As I mentioned before, I love John Frieda® Brilliant haircare line and popping a few raw almonds once in a while can’t hurt either (unless you’re allergic).

stubborn bulges. CoolSculpting® is an excellent choice for those who seek to recontour belly, love-handle, thigh, arm and even chin bulges. This no-downtime procedure is extremely popular and safe. Velashape, a radiofrequency and infrared device, results in the smoothing of cellulite on the arms, thighs and abdomen, again with no downtime.

Best Skin Ever! A consultation with a skin expert is a must if you want a tailored skincare regimen specifically for you. And besides that, there are lasers — Fraxel®, for resurfacing the skin; VBeam, for reducing redness and rosacea; and Ultherapy®, for tightening the skin of the neck and jowls. For collagen stimulation, the newest procedure is Platelet Rich Plasma, which is an injectable procedure that employs your own platelet-derived growth factors to stimulate collagen and give you a fantastic glow. Last, but not least, event facials, such as an oxygen facial or fire-and-ice facial, can have you party-ready with smooth, glowing skin. These are a few of our favorite things… among many! Every skin type, personality and budget is different, but beautiful skin, hair, eyes and figure are pretty much on everyone’s list. Procedures with little downtime make it easy to look and feel your best for the holidays. n The statements in this article are for general informational purposes only and do not substitute for individual medical advice.

Fabulous Figure We’ve tried everything from juicing to cleansing to fasting to Bikram and Kick Ram — oh, wait, that’s not a thing. Anyway, once the balanced diet and exercising has been taken to the max, many people notice that some of the cellulite is not gone and neither are some specific,

Farm to Table

2ND ANNUAL INTERFACE BENEFIT AT SHERWOOD COUNTRY CLUB Photography by Melissa Westervelt A sold-out crowd of more than 300 regional leaders, businesses and residents joined together to help thousands of vulnerable children and families on Sunday, October 4, at Interface Children & Family’s second annual “Farm to Table” Benefit at Sherwood Country Club. Local philanthropist, businessman and reality TV star of “The Bachelor,” Andrew Firestone, emceed the event, featuring delicious, award-winning and locally farmed cuisine, fine wine and extraordinary auction items and experiences. More than $250,000 was raised to help youth and families in crisis. It went to domestic violence shelters, runaway and homeless youth shelters, child abuse prevention and treatment, and parent education programs. Each of these programs aims to prevent, interrupt and end the cycle of violence within families. Guests generously raised their paddles in response to Andrew Firestone’s urgent reminder that “on this evening while we all enjoy a bountiful meal, more than 200 youth are sleeping on the streets within 25 miles of this beautiful location.” Youth who have received shelter from Interface were present to thank attendees for helping to transform their lives.

By Dustin Troyan

T

he 12th Annual Motor4Toys Charity Toy Drive and Car Show is around the corner! On Sunday, December 6, 2015, the entire car community will come together with one purpose: to help children during the holiday season. Every type of car imaginable will be present and loaded with toys to donate to the Motor4Toys Charity Toy Drive and Car Show. The car show kicks off the toy drive season for the Motor4Toys Charitable Foundation, which, over the last 11 years, has collected over 5 million dollars’ worth of toys, distributed to needy children throughout California. The foundation revolves around the very kind motorsport community and, over the last handful of years, has grown outside of the car world. Many schools, businesses, chambers of commerce and even city entitles have gotten behind the toy drive and help to collect toys during the holiday season. Every year, the foundation continues to grow with the kindness and support of so many. Motor4Toys collects toys all year long, but the focus of the toy drive is the holiday season. Our goal this year is to collect over 60,000 toys in just two short months! Children always need to know that people care about them. We hope you can support! For more information, visit Motor4Toys.com. n

Christmas in California Winter Wonderland of

Y

es, it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, with snow, the North Pole, glistening trees and a 15-foot red airplane suspended from the ceiling, carrying a life-size Santa Claus. This miseen-scene is surprising to see in sunny Southern California, unless, of course, you’re on the set of a new holiday movie — or at Aldik Home of Van Nuys. During the regular season, Aldik Home supplies you with the highest quality artificial foliage and flowers available on the market. During the holiday season, however, walk in and you are transported to a magical winter wonderland. Imagine the scene: You leave behind the 90-degree heat of the San Fernando Valley as you step in the showroom. Immediately, you notice the exquisitely decorated artificial firs that fill the store. The magical forest lights up in whimsical blues, purples and white, then takes a turn to elegant silver, purple and gold, and finally ends up in the land of the more traditional, vibrant reds and greens. No matter what color and style of decor you’re seeking this Christmas, you will find your ideal scene at Aldik Home. The 24,000-square-foot showroom becomes a holiday lovers’ paradise, complete with giant working nutcrackers. Looking for a giant 12-foot tall, snow-covered pine to convert your living room into holiday heaven? Aldik Home features a giant selection of trees in different sizes. If you prefer a 5-foot tree in iridescent pink, look no further. Trees, nutcrackers, and flying Santas are not the only Christmas cheer you will find there. Aldik Home offers welcoming wreaths, gorgeous garlands, ornate center pieces and delicate figurines. If you get into the Christmas spirit as much as we do, be sure to stop by for the 360-degree experience; it’s one-of-a-kind and only comes around once a year. n

FURNISH YOUR FEAST By Tammy Randall Wood, ASID

E

very Thanksgiving Eve, my mother would sit down at the kitchen table and make butter lambs. She would take a stick of butter and lay it on its side, adding another half stick upright at one end. Small tufts of butter “fur” were accomplished with the aid of a garlic press. She would carefully cut the pressings and apply them to the little lamb she was building. The face, ears, tail and folded front legs were carefully carved out, and she would make their eyes from little pieces of black olive. Right before dinner was served, she would place a lamb at each end of the Thanksgiving table. This was my mother’s way of making us feel important and loved as we sat down to share this special meal together. As I gear up for holiday entertaining, I try very hard to remember that this is the impetus behind a beautifully staged table. The primary purpose should be to make loved ones understand that the effort put in was on their behalf because their presence is being celebrated at the table as they gather round it.

It seems that the style of how we entertain has changed so much in recent years. Buttoned-up, formal dining has been replaced with meals that embody a relaxed and individualized joie de vivre. This shift doesn’t mean that the ceremony of planning special meals must be downgraded. It does mean that the food itself, how it is presented and, most importantly, the guests can be the focus. Whether you are serving your family’s perennial favorites, experimenting with new dishes or celebrating your holiday in a traditional potluck style, the spirit with which you present what you’ve prepared can make even the most simple fare feel noble and your guests feel special. Here are some fun ways to elevate your evening and make hosting the holiday dinner a treat for everyone. Location — Moving the feast to a new or unexpected location can add a dash of whimsy and make the meal feel like a destination. Think about taking it to the garden, patio or a balcony.

Tablecloths — These are no longer a prerequisite for a formal dinner! If you do opt for one, consider vintage hotel linen. It can often be found for a song on eBay, at auction or in flea markets. These linens work especially well in an outdoor setting, creating a juxtaposition between formal and informal that I always love. Tablecloths have the secret added benefit of transforming a makeshift folding table or door on sawhorses into a great dining table. Placemats — If you have an interesting table, show it off with great placemats. Rattan, wicker, linen or mid-century placemats made from capiz shell are good choices. Alternately, a long runner made of twigs or vintage textiles can be just the thing to highlight your furniture. The texture and pattern provided by these kinds of elements combine beautifully with dinnerware of almost any sort. Dishes — I have the most beautiful set of Limoges porcelain...that I almost never use. Nine times out of ten, I opt to use either simple white porcelain chargers or my old Wedgwood queensware dinner plates collected at flea markets. Big white or cream dishes make food look so appealing, and I love how they can combine with other dishes of pattern to allow me to be inventive with a table composition.

Goblets — Large, simple, clear-glass water and wine stems have great form and utility. Whether you’re drinking Côtes du Rhône or Calabasas’ Finest, guests love them and they pair well with elements of every era and level of formality. Silverware — You can’t go wrong with sterling or silver-plated flatware. Even different patterns of hotel silver can work on the same table. New, handed down from family or found in your favorite antique store, fancy flatware has a way of making every meal feel like a party. Napkins — Linen or cotton, new or a vintage print; they look so elegant oversized and cinched through a simple napkin ring. Pewter or rattan napkin rings are my favorite. They go with everything and are durable! Candles — In my opinion, candles are the crowning touch to every table. It’s fun to experiment with combinations of candleholders of various heights and materials. There is only one rule: No fragrance. Nothing should compete with the aroma of the feast! Centerpiece — Contrary to its appellation, the centerpiece doesn’t have to be in the center, and it doesn’t have to be singular. I like to think of centerpieces more in terms of table décor, where florals, vegetation and interesting items can be distributed over the breadth of the table. Keep things low so guests can see one another, but always have something lovely to look at wherever their eyes might fall. Displaying florals, fruits, vegetables and herbs in imaginative ways will never go out of style, but you might also arrange groups of other interesting items down the center of the table which speak to the style and surroundings of your home. From antlers to fossilized corals to mercury glass vessels, the possibilities are endless. Last Thanksgiving, we abandoned the indoors and dined in the courtyard. My family gathered candlesticks from every collection we own. Blown glass, carved wood and silver were arranged down the center of our outdoor table to create a cascade of twinkles in varying heights. We sprinkled the table with rose petals, succulents and herb clippings from the garden and composed our place settings not from a formal set, but from a collage of my favorite things from the cupboards. Simple white porcelain chargers, my mother’s sterling flatware, vintage hotel linen and large modern glass goblets were arranged to

make the table feel diverse and vibrant. The food was arranged buffet style on the sidewall of the courtyard using my collection of old transferware platters. Contemporary and vintage elements were combined to feel fresh and interesting, and the end result was a table that maintained a special sense of formality without missing out on the organic and fun nature of the individual elements. Once the dancing fire had been lit in the fireplace, the whole space felt magical. Long after dessert had been devoured, we lingered. It was almost midnight before we could tear ourselves from the table, which, in my estimation, is the best feedback a hostess can hope for. Wishing you celebrations to remember! Until next time, here’s to creating your own Noble Spaces! n Tammy Randall Wood, ASID, is the founder and principal of Interior Archaeology. ou’re in the market for a special piece of jewelry that reflects your personal style. Maybe you’re looking for an art deco brooch or to redesign your great-grandmother’s engagement ring in a more contemporary setting. Perhaps you’d like to get top dollar for a diamond or some jewelry sitting in your drawer that no longer suits your style. Estate Diamond Exchange is a one-of-a-kind retail experience that offers all these options, as well as discreet collateralized loans, jewelry and watch repairs, and appraisals. They’re located just minutes from Malibu on Kanan Road in Agoura Hills. Estate Diamond Exchange has been a fixture in the Agoura Hills area for over 23 years. They are much loved by longtime clients who keep coming back for the warm, friendly ambiance and expert staff knowledgeable in all aspects of jewelry. Estate Diamond Exchange is thrilled to welcome Sandy Horovitz, a GIA graduate with over 35 years of experience in the jewelry business. In addition, they’re pleased to welcome renowned master jeweler Leo Gevorkian, who has over 30 years of experience in the field. When the late Neil Shanman started Estate Diamond Exchange in 1992, he aimed to provide local residents with the kind of experience his customers had enjoyed in his antique businesses back east. His daughter, Lisa Shanman, says, “Fine jewelry was in his blood. His mother had an antique and jewelry store in Brooklyn. My dad owned an antique auction gallery and was an auctioneer.” When we interviewed Lisa, she showed us a framed clip from an early 1970s Women’s Wear Daily that mentioned a jeweled bra worn by Lana Turner that was up for auction. When Neil relocated to Southern California with his wife Merle and family, he eventually returned to the jewelry and antique business, opening his unique retail store in the Agoura area. “Neil loved dealing with antiques and kibitzing with customers,” Merle says. “He was a fixture in Estate Diamond Exchange.” Following his death, Merle kept Neil’s vision for a unique, custom experience alive at Estate Diamond Exchange. Today, Merle, Lisa and the staff ensure each and every customer has this experience. Clients from Calabasas, Agoura, Westlake Village, Malibu and beyond love to stop by to see the distinctive vintage and antique jewelry, representing a variety of styles, from Victorian and art deco to nouveau and contemporary, including signed pieces from Tiffany & Co., Cartier and other luxury designers. The boutique carries fine watches, engagement and wedding rings, pendants, bracelets, earrings and more. Customers are treated with hospitality and warmth, an experience rarely found in mall jewelry stores. Estate Diamond Exchange is a well-regarded resource for everything from consignment and estate evaluations to custom jewelry design, appraisals, redesign and jewelry and watch repairs. In addition to having GIA graduates onsite, the store also has professional jewelers in store. Customers often bring in engagement rings or jewelry handed down by a family member that they would like to adapt to their personal style or sell or trade in for a new piece. Estate Diamond Exchange has kept up with the times and features pieces at their eBay and Ruby Lane online stores (Ruby Lane features antique and vintage pieces). Lisa shares, “People love to shop here. It’s a very warm environment. They feel comfortable to schmooze and browse. My father would be very proud that his vision is alive in the store today!” n 5017 Kanan Rd. Agoura Hills 818.865.8160 yournextdiamond.com

Investors Beware: By Mark Wendell

The Media Noise Can Be Deafening

M

ost people would argue that living in a digital world, with instant access to an endless stream of information, has made us smarter and more self-empowered than past generations. Investors believe that it has “leveled the playing field,” enabling them to make investment decisions based on the same information once only available to investment professionals. The incessant quest for information has reached such a fever pitch that all media — especially the financial channels, with their many comedic guests, and the print media and, now, the Internet — are focused on churning out content 24/7, and it still isn’t enough to satiate peoples’ ravenous appetites for information. So, it’s all good, right? Wrong! There is a much stronger argument that can be made that, for people in general and individual investors especially, information overload not only makes it more difficult to make constructive rational decisions, it often leads to behavior that can be harmful, if not devastating, to your financial health. While there has obviously been a marked increase in the quantity of information, the quality of the information is unquestionably in question. Where you have quantity without quality, all you really have is unfiltered insufferable “noise.” And for people who really want to obtain legitimate financial advice and relevant information, it can be deafening. With most of the population wired to the Internet and mobile devices, information has become so ubiquitous that it has become

84

Calabasas Style

an entitlement for people who take its availability for granted. The media is taking full advantage of that entitlement attitude to layer on as much content as it thinks the public can consume, whether it be accurate, useful, valid or not. In order to attract the attention of a pre-occupied public and, therefore, the advertising dollars its viewership generates, the information has to be excessively entertaining, pithy and compelling. To that end, the media has no fear or shame in hyping a story or a personality beyond a reasoned reality in order to make its information more essential. For example, why is the world coming to an end with every market correction as foretold in 15 sound bites per hour from the mouths of 15 pedigreed “experts” with charts and graphs to justify Armageddon? In the investment arena, stories can’t be compelling, or entertaining for that matter, unless they are consequential in the shortterm. The problem is that the information we, as investors, receive is filtered through an “excitability” gauge. Can you imagine an analyst or a market guru spending 30 minutes on the financial channels talking about the superior five-year growth prospects of investing in a well thought out and researched investment approach and how a diversifiedstrategically-well-designed portfolio is in your best interest to achieve superior results? Even though it could benefit the vast majority of investors, three-quarters of the audience would switch over to the Food Network, where they could find much more “consequential” information upon which to make definitive decisions by dinnertime.

Unfortunately, access to more information and technology has not improved investor performance over the last couple of decades. Emotionally charged decisions in volatile markets may impact your performance. According to Dalbar, Inc., the average individual equity fund investor captured only slightly more than half of the S&P500 return over the 20 years ending 2013, returning 5.02 percent vs. 9.22 percent respectively. While we’re not suggesting that you should turn off your cable news or refrain from surfing investment sites, you do need to remind yourself that these sources of information don’t necessarily share your agenda. Gathering information and educating yourself are essential parts of the process, but it should be done in the context of your clearly-defined objectives, with a well-conceived financial plan, under the disciplined guidance of a seasoned financial professional. n Copyright © Mark Wendell 2015. IT COULD

COST YOU A FORTUNE,

but it’s worth it.

By Marc Cohen

S

o, it’s the holiday season again, and you’re wondering, “Should I distribute my money equally and spend it on my loved ones or should I buy a bunch of cheap gifts and keep the bulk of the money for myself?” Tough decision, I know, and unfortunately, most of the cool tech gifts are expensive. I can’t reveal what I decided to do this year — although I’m sure one of my family members will be more than happy to enlighten you — but I can give you some of the options so you can decide for yourself. Just remember that with great power comes great responsibility. When the Apple Watch was announced, I said, “No way.” I use my watches as a fashion statement, so why would I ever give that up? Then, a good friend, who felt the same way that I did, ended up getting the watch as a gift. I was interested and then intrigued, and I ended up buying the smartwatch for myself. I have to say that I haven’t taken it off since. It is truly an amazing product. I can answer a call and get my text messages without picking up my phone. I get the weather at a glance, plus a million other cool features. If I have an appointment, it pops up to remind me. For fashion and design options, I can choose the face. After a month, I went practical and have information on the screen. It is an amazing gadget, but are you ready to make the financial commitment? The watch ranges from $500 for the standard model to $17,000 for the gold watch. Yes, you read that right. I have to say that it’s been a bit of a life-changing experience for me. No longer am I tethered to my phone as now I can actually run to the bathroom without bringing it with me. Yes, apparently, I was that attached to it. Check it out. You might actually love it. Another really cool tech gift is the Amazon Echo. It looks like a giant cylinder. Say the magic words, “Alexia, get me the Dodger

94

score,” and instantly, you will have the score, the current weather or anything else you ask for. It does a million things. You can ask it about Abraham Lincoln or Jennifer Aniston, depending on your taste, and it will access Wikipedia for the answer. Additionally, you can set up news briefs from many sources, like ESPN or NPR, if you are an Amazon Prime member, which I highly recommend. You can also voice order a product that you have previously ordered. Couch potatoes, rejoice! It runs around $180 and must be connected to the internet. It stays on all the time but activates with the key word “Alexia.” NSA, are you listening? It’s fun, different and even gives you traffic to a specific destination. Check it out on the Amazon website. Don’t forget kids of all ages. The Xbox One, PS4 and Nintendo still make great gifts. They are truly media centers. While not inexpensive, they will entertain for years to come. If you own the PS4, check out one of the best adventure games I have ever played: Until Dawn. Think horror film on steroids, only you control the action.

Hope you have a wonderful holiday season. If you have a few bucks left over and are feeling generous, feel free to buy me the $17,000 Apple Watch. After all, fashion is important to me.

See you on the radio! Marc

Spotlight: Local Winemakers

WINE NOT? Winemaking is just as much an art as it is a business. As witnessed by these local winemakers, there are many different circumstances that lead to making wine. Be it a family business, an escalating hobby or the need for a suitable ground cover, planting a vineyard requires research and dedication

BLISS AT FIRST SIP

Greg and Etty Goetzmans’ Goetzman Cellars

W

ine is more than processed grape juice;” these are the words of local winemaker Greg Goetzman. Greg and his wife, Etty, have been seriously collecting and enjoying wine for over 20 years. The pair has traveled to several picture perfect, storybook wine regions, including Bordeaux, Burgundy and Tuscany. After building their own wine cellar, the Goetzmans started seriously contemplating making their own wine. When their neighbor started growing grapes with a similarly laid out backyard, the Goetzmans thought, “Why not us, too?” They planted their vines in 2010, and their first vintage was bottled in 2012. Their vineyard focuses predominately on Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and Goetzman Cellars’ Red Wine blend seems to be a real crowd-pleaser. When asked about their favorite varietal, Greg reveals, “We enjoy all wines from Pinot to Zinfandel, as well as White Burgundy and Sauvignon Blanc. But if we were on a desert isle and had to choose, give us a nice Cabernet Sauvignon.” Their collection is a private production and quite limited at this time. How-

ever, their grapes are developing nicely, and they plan to expand production in the years to come. Greg’s advice to future winemakers: “Plant your vineyard now! You will have plenty of time to figure out the ‘how’ of wine making later.” For Greg, the best part of winemaking is sharing his creations with friends and family and watching the unmistakable expression of bliss at first sip. “It brings people together in a very social and sophisticated way. It’s fun that you can taste, study and enjoy, whether you are a producer or simply purchasing your first bottle.” As Greg sees it, it doesn’t matter whom you are or what your level of viticulture education because wine is something that brings people together and gets the conversation going. Wine can be enjoyed by all, even if you can’t taste the hints of tobacco and black pepper in your glass of Cabernet to save your life. n

FATE DRINKS CABERNET Milt Arenson’s Quatro Niños

M

ost winemakers choose to start the journey into winemaking. For Milt Arenson, fate brought him into it. Back in 2004, Milt bought a home in Calabasas. When he went to pick up the keys, the owner mentioned that he had planted a couple of rows of Cabernet grapes up on the hill. Milt remembers what the previous owner said to him: “Maybe one day, you will have enough grapes to make a bottle or two of wine.” With that, Milt started maintaining the vines up on the hillside of his new house. He quickly realized that sustaining this hillside with water would be very cost consuming. He installed a drip system, which used less water and definitely helped keep costs down. With the help of Tom Booth, Arenson was able to plant more vines above and below the original ones. The very first harvest came in 2007. Booth’s son, Tommy, one of our other featured winemakers, entered Milt’s wine into a couple of local competitions. When the wine thrived at these local events, Milt’s path into the world of viticulture was set. As the vineyard yielded more grapes, the wine got better. In 2008, the vineyard became Calabasas Vineyards

102

Calabasas Style

and their delicious Cabernet Sauvignon was given the name Quatro Niños, after his four children. Milt admits, “Basically, I got into this by accident.” Preferring to take care of the viticulture portion of the process, in 2010, Arenson put the pleasure of turning his grapes to wine in the capable hands of Shaun Frohn at Camarillo Custom Crush and he turned over the vineyard management to Debbie Larmon at Somis. With his certified organic grapes behind it and Shaun’s skill at winemaking, Quatro Niños won numerous awards, including Double Gold from both the 2012 San Francisco International Wine Festival and the San Francisco Chronicle. Quatro Niños also took home Best of Show at the Santa Barbara Wine Festival in 2011. The vineyard has since shown no signs of slowing. Quatro Niños Cabernet Sauvignon is available online at calabasasvineyards.com. n

GROWING GRAPES IN THE CANYONS OF CORNELL The Folletts’ Ramjet Ranch

N

ot only are grape vines visually striking and require much less water than traditional ground cover, they are also a wonderful way to prevent erosion on hillsides. This is one of the reasons that Bill and Sheila Follett entered the world of vineyards and winemaking. The Folletts are nestled away in the canyons of Cornell, an unincorporated region of Agoura Hills, off Kanan Road between Agoura and Malibu. Residents there take full advantage of both the utilitarian and aesthetic features of personal vineyards. This, together with having friends and neighbors with vineyards, was the spark of inspiration that prompted the Folletts to plant their own vines. Still in their first year of viticulture, their vines have not yet produced a harvest, but they are hopeful. The pair recently filed a permit with the county to expand their vineyard. With this permit in hand, they would be able to plant more vines and make the change from hobby winemakers to small producers of heavenly wines. Bill has already learned much from his vines: “Do your homework up front. Find wines you like that are grown locally

and find out as much as you can about the grapes, the growing process, the winemaking process (or winemaker) used and the specifics about the site.” Bill also learned the art of growing grapes from friends and neighbors. As he is just starting out, advice from friends and neighbors is paramount to the success of the endeavor. Bill is also a man of science. The Folletts’ 10-acre parcel of land, where their vineyard lies, is nicknamed “Ramjet Ranch.” The ranch is named for Bill’s years of research and development on ramjet and scramjet engines. As for the future, Bill looks forward to having his first grape-harvesting party, a time for friends and family to get together and celebrate the fruits of his labor. n

THE SCIENCE BEHIND GOOD WINE Memory Maker of Harmata Family Wines

O

lfactory senses send signals to the brain which trigger memories. There are numerous flavors and aromas in wine that allow us to escape back to these certain moments,” says Tommy Booth, as he puts perfectly into words one of the most inexplicable draws to a good glass of wine. His very own delectable Cabernet Sauvignon is named “Memory Maker,” after this very concept. Tommy has been surrounded by wine his entire life. A native Angeleno, he helped his father with his backyard-vineyard entrepreneurial business, a venture that had the father-and-son team teach clients how to make their own wine. His mother, Julie, the creator behind the name “Memory Maker,” has been a wine connoisseur for as long as Tommy can remember. Naturally, he was accepted into the Wine & Viticulture program at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. After tragically losing his father three weeks into the semester, Tommy bravely decided that the best way to honor his father was to continue on in his footsteps. He went on to perpetuate his father’s entrepreneurial spirit in his backyard-vineyard business. Tommy’s Harmata Family Wines, named after his mother’s

104 Calabasas Style

maiden name, has since blossomed and grown gloriously. The grapes for his wines come from three different local L.A. vineyards. He trades a few cases of his wines for excess grapes from these local vineyards. With these grapes, he is able to make several different luscious varietals at Aldabella Custom Crush Winery in Westlake Village. “There’s no wrong answer when tasting wine…if you took the measures to maintain integrity and create something you love, don’t worry about what some people think,” Tommy says. It is evident that Tommy Booth puts his heart and soul into the wine that he makes, and it is palpable to the palate. For him, winemaking “gives me a sense of both passion and science, the tangible and intangible, especially achievement.” Keep an eye out for Harmata Family Wines at local festivals, select restaurants, HarmataWines.com, the tasting room at Aldabella and more Los Angeles venues to come. n

A DREAM MADE REALITY CAB IN of Bridle Trail Wines

R

esting atop Bridle Trail, nestled away in the terraced hillsides of Hidden Hills, there sits a log cabin. This cozy and statuesque home is modeled after a lodge one might find in the majestic Sierras. This log cabin is also the inspiration behind the name of the succulent cabernet which is made there: “CAB IN.” Winemaker and vineyard owners Marc and Debra Spellman and family moved to Hidden Hills in 2003. They were fortunate enough to acquire a plot of land that was absolutely ideal for a vineyard. With terraced hillsides and both east and west exposure, this area had “wine” written all over it. Spellman quickly realized how much maintenance his hillside would entail. From worries about wildfire to rainfall-induced erosion, it soon became apparent that a vineyard was the way to go. Tom Booth, local vineyard genius, helped Marc make his dream a reality. After deciding which varietals to cultivate and the layout of the vines, Spellman Family Vineyard was slowly and painstakingly born. After acquiring the 1-year-old vines from Kendall Jackson Nursery, each vine was handled

with utmost care, transported to Hidden Hills, and planted in hand-dug holes. The work took over two days to complete. “Be prepared for anything and everything, understand that there’s no bad wine, just better [wine]; and keep your sense of humor,” says Marc Spellman, on the process of becoming a winemaker. After the tragic loss of winemaster Tom Booth, a close friend and loved by the wine community, Spellman Family Vineyard sat untouched for several months; and surprisingly, thrived. To tame the wild vines, Spellman brought in vineyard expert Bob Tobias. 10 years later, the vineyard had produced “7 vintages, beginning in 2008, of what we believe is a very elegant, complex memorable wine that is always evolving.” Today, tended by Perez Vineyards, Spellman Family Vineyards and Bridle Trail Wines have produced many mouthwatering varietals, available locally at select restaurants, Camarillo Custom Crush, and Cornell Winery. Spellman also donates many of his bottles to local charities. CAB IN is available locally at Riviera Restaurant and Lounge, and other select restaurants. n

The High School Journey:

Pairing Academic Rigor with a Culture of Kindness

W

hat if there was a high school where teens naturally extended courtesy? Where, in the midst of promoting unwavering academic rigor, the teachers also compassionately helped teens navigate through adolescence? Imagine a high school that produced A+ human beings! In today’s educational culture, many focus on college as the “Big Prize.” Yet, studies and parents decry increasing teen stress, sleep deprivation and unmanageable pressure. Is it so counter-cultural to imagine that students can earn the Big Prize (sought after college acceptance) without excessive suffering and tears? At de Toledo High School (formerly New Community Jewish High School), they focus on the journey. Ethical living, values and kindness are at the heart of their school community. They aim to create a daily environment that uplifts the teen spirit and the soul. At de Toledo High School, they pair college prep academic rigor (extensive AP and honors classes available) with a culture of kindness that encourages teens to tap into their best selves. Their faculty leads with both intellect and heart, enabling teens to mature into confident, compassionate young adults. Their curriculum leaves room for students’ interests, talents and passions to flourish. In the science labs, on the performance stage and around lunch tables, kindness resides. While touring, prospective parents frequently ask, “Why are your students so happy?” They spot teens smiling, seated beside teachers, out-

side under bright colored umbrellas, working on essays or math equations or playing a game of chess. They visit classrooms full of lively, topical conversation. They observe students savoring their day at school. Self-reliance, leadership and kindness abound. Through national and international travel programs, students practice self-reliance, learning how to live and work with others. They develop leadership skills through a myriad of experiences - academics, athletics, performing and visual arts, clubs and meaningful roles in the development of school policy. Alumni carry this de Toledo High School legacy of kindness and values into college, graduate school and their careers. They become advocates for a healthy, humane and peaceful world. Adolescence has its inherent ups and downs. Teens and their parents benefit from the partnership of a kind, inspirational team of educators. At de Toledo High School - tucked between calculus and physics, English and AP U.S. history - students learn to care about others, to graciously widen their circle of friends and to hold the door open for anyone whose hands are full. Calabasas Chamber of Commerce ‘Tis the season to shop local! When someone is asked the name of their favorite restaurant, supermarket or retail shop, it’s usually a local business. And our answers are important. Why? Because local businesses define our sense of place. But we often forget that their survival depends on our patronage, especially at the holiday season. Local business owners invest much of their life savings in their stores and have an active interest in the area and community’s long-term well-being. They serve on local boards, volunteer for charitable organizations and join the local chamber of commerce. In doing this, they show a real sense of commitment to the area. When residents shop with local merchants, they help keep the economy healthy and employment strong and both residents and business owners glean sense of ownership of the local economy. Here is a list of our shopping centers in Calabasas worth visiting this holiday season: THE COMMONS AT CALABASAS An internationally awarded, European-village-styled, open-air shopping center, offering over 35 diverse shopping, dining and entertainment venues. THE COURTYARD AT THE COMMONS A community retail center, offering restaurants, specialty stores, a spa and shops that appeal to your sweet tooth. CREEKSIDE VILLAGE Located in west Calabasas, offering an Albertsons grocery store, neighborhood services, specialty shops and casual restaurants. DELI DREAMS The Story of Brent’s Deli

By Pax Ansley Photography by Marvin Steindler

I

n this life, there are some things that are simply meant to be. Hindsight allows us to look back at the path we’ve taken to get to where we are today. In 1969, Ron Peskin made the pivotal decision to buy a failing delicatessen in Northridge, California. That decision has changed not only his life, but the lives of his family and his community.

In a strip mall located in Northridge, a small deli had been barely staying afloat for the previous two years. The owner had made the decision to sell. He offered the deli at a very reasonable $1,800, but with a hefty extra $40,000 in debt. With the yearning to open a place of his own, Ron Peskin bravely accepted the owner’s offer and decided to take on the faltering deli.

The year was 1969. A young Ron Peskin from Cleveland, Ohio, had been immersed in the deli world for as long as he could remember. His uncle was the proud owner of Linker’s in Sherman Oaks. Ron himself worked for Art’s in Studio City and Mort’s in Tarzana. He was happily married to his beautiful wife, Patricia, with whom he had two loving children, Brent and Carie.

In a serendipitous coincidence, the name of the deli, Brent’s, was the same as Ron and Patricia’s own son. With only eleven employees and one delivery truck, the Peskin family embarked on a journey that would begin with sandwiches and whose end is still nowhere in sight.

134

Calabasas Style

It didn’t take long for Brent’s Deli to cement a place for itself in the hearts of local Angelenos. Business was booming. With Ron at the helm, making every sandwich that passed over his counter, Brent’s Deli developed a reputation for consistency and unfailingly delicious food. From mouthwatering pastrami piled high on crusty rye bread to amazing latkes and matzo balls, Brent’s has always had the kind of menu that foodies dream of. In 1988, Ron hired a young delivery driver named Marc Hernandez. After leaving the deli to attend college, Hernandez returned to Brent’s. This time around, Marc fell in love with Ron’s daughter, Carie, while the two of them were working together at Brent’s. The couple wed in 2001. Coincidentally, Ron’s son Brent also met his wife, Dori, while they were working together at the deli. Dori went on to become the manager of both locations and today owns her own spin studio. Dori and Brent’s oldest daughter, Taylor, recently graduated from the University of Oregon and is currently the manager of both locations, with the added responsibility of handling all social media accounts. Brent’s Westlake opened in 2006. It was Marc Hernandez who first pushed for opening a new location. Conveniently located in the heart of the Conejo Valley, Brent’s Westlake has become a local favorite. From business meetings to birthday parties, the Westlake Village location serves as the perfect backdrop for all kinds of social events. The one delivery truck that Ron Peskin started with has turned into a fleet of nine refrigerated trucks that haul delicious food to events all over Southern California. Today, catering accounts for a big chunk of the company’s revenue. Throughout the entire run of Brent’s Deli, there has always been an important connection to community. Brent’s Deli has donated tens of thousands of gift cards to charity auctions, schools, churches, temples and more. They’ve hosted two charity golf tournaments, where they raised over $100,000 for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Conejo Valley. They also donate to a nonprofit called T.H.E. Foundation that works with Las Virgenes School District, right here in our own backyard. With a legacy spanning almost 50 years, Brent’s has become synonymous with quality food, accommodating customer service and great atmosphere. Zagat has rated them Top Deli for 18 years. Offering classic deli food and surprisingly unique options, Brent’s has reimagined the typical delicatessen, and it has never tasted so good. With over 650 items on the menu, from pastrami omelets to decadent reubens served with steak fries and homemade coleslaw, Brent’s Deli is guaranteed to please even the pickiest palate. n

Ask the

Pharmacist

Q A

I received a letter from my child’s school stating that head lice was found in her classroom. Is there anything I can do to prevent my child from getting it?

First, you need to realize that this is very common in schools, especially in preschool through middle school, due to the close contact among the kids. Second, I commend you for being proactive and aware of the lice presence in the classroom. Many parents are in denial. They don’t think it can happen to them and, therefore, don’t do anything about it until their child is infested. I do not know that you can prevent head lice, but there are steps you can take to minimize the risk. • Ask your child to avoid head-to-head contact with classmates during play and other activities. • Instruct your child not to share personal belongings, such as hats, scarves, coats, combs, brushes, hair accessories and headphones. • Instruct your child to avoid shared spaces where hats and clothing from more than one student are hung on a common hook or kept in a locker. • Keep your child’s hair up, braided or gelled so it is less accessible. • Perform frequent lice checks on your child’s hair to look for lice or nits. Your school health clerk can be an excellent resource – someone who can teach you what to look for. • Observe your child and look for head scratching. It is much easier to treat a mild case when you discover it early. There are proven remedies to treat lice, and some over-the-counter products claim to actually repel them. More scientific research is needed to prove the safety and efficacy of these products. A number of small studies have shown that ingredients in some of these products — mostly plant oils, such as rosemary, citronella, eucalyptus, tea tree and lemon grass — may work to repel lice. However, these products are classified as “natural,” so they aren’t regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and they haven’t been tested to FDA standards. Overall, just remember, the best approach to minimizing the risk is to not panic and be proactive! n

WEST HILLS HOSPITAL POWER OF PINK SEMINAR To kick off Breast Cancer Awareness Month, West Hills Hospital’s Women’s Diagnostic Center hosted a seminar series, “The Power of Pink: Surviving Breast Cancer & Beyond,” on Oct. 1 at the Westfield Topanga Community Center. The important discussion informed participants on preventing, detecting and treating breast cancer –– the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths for women in the U.S. The seminar also taught attendees strategies for supporting loved ones who are dealing with the disease. A panel of West Hills Hospital’s expert hematology/oncology, surgery, radiology and radiation oncology physicians joined the evening’s host, Wellness Oncology & Hematology’s Omid Shaye, M.D., in covering a variety of topics. These topics included new drug therapies, treatment options, breast health awareness, survivor support and more. In addition to appearances by local support organizations, the series shared stories of survivorship from women who have been afflicted with this lifechanging disease.
