Vanity flair The focal point of a great bathroom is a stylish, functional vanity. Here’s how to choose the right one for you

hether you’re updating a few fittings, renovating your bathroom or planning a new spa-inspired ensuite, choosing a vanity is a big decision. As the storage and grooming hub, it’s a high-use fixture that, with the right accessories, can be as practical as it is beautiful. Size matters First, measure the size of your bathroom and the space available to accommodate the vanity. “Allow for clearance to open doors and fully extend drawers, and space from wet zones like the bath and shower,” says Nicole Wesley, communications manager at Cibo Design. A good clearance is 300mm between the vanity and an adjacent toilet, and 600mm in front of the vanity, so you can move around it comfortably. Consider your priorities, too. Do you want to maximise bench space, incorporate ample storage or calm the morning rush hour with twin basins? In family bathrooms, storage may be a high priority, whereas if you are shopping for a powder room or guest bathroom, it might not be so important. “A double vanity can be a great option in family bathrooms where multiple people are using the space at the same time,” says Nicole, who suggests allowing at least 1200mm to accommodate a dual sink.
