Hard work pays off

MYDAUGHTER’S high school diploma arrived in the mail with no fanfare. Four years of seriously hard work, often with little to no sleep, wrapped up in this one sheet of paper delivered by the mailman on a Tuesday afternoon.

Isn’t that how it goes though? Years of hard work and dedication often go unnoticed until one day others recognize what you’ve been working so hard to achieve.

It reminded me of a similar discussion of the NADRA awards that I read in the Elite Deck Building Professionals group on Facebook. Builder David Phillabaum shared this about a recent project of his: “I probably have the best view from a deck, but it’s not going to win any awards.”

Deck Specialist columnist Brendan Casey replied: “A new NADRA award category needs to be created for views over $1 million.”

Phillabaum said: “Please tell me there’s a monetary prize.” To which Casey responded: “Are you kidding? There’s a fat monetary prize for winning... The upside of winning is you can leverage that award into far more than a cash prize. We doubled our sales from winning in less than two years.”

Casey isn’t wrong. The award or recognition may not have monetary value in itself, but the hard work, talent and expertise it symbolizes does.

That’s why we’ve dedicated this issue to highlighting 22 builders who have proven their worth in the industry. Each builder has been nominated by a manufacturer for their expertise using that manufacturer’s product.

As Deck Specialist of the Year Award winners (see deck-specialist.com for additional coverage of the winners), we honor these builders for their contribution to the industry. What’s amazing about being named a Deck Specialist of the Year builder is it proves the builder has put in years of dedication and commitment to master their craft.

For example, Michael Arneson, Jr., owner of

Cedarbrook Outdoor Design/Build, Inc., Mount Airy, MD., began working in construction at a young age with his father and grandfather. He worked for an outdoor construction company for years before venturing out on his own in 2006. Seventeen years later, he is being recognized by YellaWood (see page 50).

Likewise, Edward Pacylowski, ProBuilt Construction, Highland, MD., (see page 44) got his start in construction in 1974. In 2000, he built his first Trex deck in Ellicott, MD. Two years later, he received his first TrexPro Contractor card. Last year, he was recognized for having worked with Trex for over 20 years.

And for Mel, Brandon and Jordan Dueck at Windeck, it was 21 years before they landed on Wolf Home Products (see page 48). Then, in the past five years, they have received multiple awards at NADRA after having found their niche in the market.

These builders’ hard work paid off. Just as my daughter’s effort was similarly recognized at her high school graduation. Watching my daughter walk during her graduation ceremony as a distinguished scholar among her peers was proof enough that she put in the necessary work to earn that diploma. No doubt, four years from now, I will be watching from the sidelines once again as her college of choice recognizes her effort in her chosen field of medicine.

Trex Honors 8 Pro Contractors

For decking contractors, success is built on quality work and referrals. With this in mind, Trex Co. recently honored eight of its elite TrexPro contractors with the company’s prestigious Stellar Service Award.

The Trex Stellar Service Award is presented annually to the top performing TrexPro Platinum builder in each of the company’s sales regions based on project volume and customer satisfaction. To qualify for this honor, builders must install enough decks to rank within the top 25% of all TrexPro Platinum builders in their region by volume, and also earn the most and highest satisfaction ratings in postbuild customer surveys.

Based on their outstanding performance over the past year, eight TrexPro Platinum contractors were presented with Trex Stellar Service Awards. They include (by region):

Central: Mike Mitchell, Mitchell Construction, Illinois.

· Mid Atlantic: Bud Bradford, South Jersey Custom Decks, New Jersey

· Northeast: Nir Elimelch, Samsol Decks, New York.

FastenMaster Celebrates 25 Years

FastenMaster is celebrating 25 years of providing professional building contractors with innovative products and fastening solutions that make work faster, easier, and more efficient.

Established in 1998, FastenMaster created the category of structural wood-to-wood screws with the introduction of TimberLOK, a heavy-duty wood screw designed to eliminate the need to predrill when attaching two pieces of wood together. It was the first of what has become the very popular ‘LOK Line’ of structural wood-to-wood fasteners for residential applications, and solidified FastenMaster’s focus on providing PRO-Driven solutions.

“By actively listening to our PROs, FastenMaster has helped contractors achieve great success by offering them the very best solutions on the market,” said Web Shaffer, senior VP and general manager. “Developing productivity solutions through innovation has been our north star during the past 25 years and we expect to deliver even more new and innovative solutions to the market in the next 25 years.”

“Referrals are the lifeblood of any decking contractor,” noted Phariss. “Earning this award distinguishes them as great TrexPro builders with a lot of enthusiastic customers.”

Vista Railings Expands Distribution in Northern Georgia

Vista Railing Systems Inc. is expanding its distribution network in Northern Georgia with the addition of Carolina Atlantic Forest Products.

“We are very excited to work with Carolina Atlantic to make our products available in the Northern Georgia market on a day-to-day basis,” said Kalvin Eden, national sales manager, Vista Railing Systems Inc. “They have been providing excellent service to the Northern Georgia market for several years, and

the addition of the Vista Railing line will allow them to expand and grow with their current customers and extend their reach to new opportunities by offering our full line of premium quality aluminum, glass, and cable railing products.”

“At Carolina Atlantic Forest Products, our team draws from decades of experience to provide best in class service to all the markets exterior envelopes covers including deck and stair railings. We pride ourselves on being knowledgeable and reliable, and we measure success with repeat business. Carolina Atlantic has several long-term partnerships with our suppliers and customers because we have a vested interest in providing the supplies needed to help their businesses grow. Q. Tell us how you got started in construction.

A. I received the opportunity 25 years ago to get into the construction industry with a family member.

Q. How has business changed in recent years?

A. I would say you have to be more intuitive in how you converse with a potential client as internet searching is readily available with lots of information.

Q. How did you first start using Armadillo products in your projects?

A. While walking the IBS show, the Armadillo decking caught my eye with its vibrant colors. Soon to find out the boards are fully capped, and made here in Minnesota where we get wild temperature swings, it was an easy switch, and I was hooked.

Q. Any projects for which the use of Armadillo products was particularly beneficial?

A. I built a two-story deck last year, and the client was very pleased the underside of the material was finished when they looked up from their patio below.

Q. Where do your design ideas come from?

A. I would say the IBS show helped tremendously in gaining knowledge, ideas, and also reading building magazines, such as yours.

Q. What’s ahead for your company?

A. Looking forward, I would say keeping great customer satisfaction, quality, growth, and employee development.

AZEK/TimberTech Specialist of the Year

Legacy Decks

Q. How did Legacy Decks get its start?

A. My journey began in 2013 when my wife, Amy, and I decided to sell our renovation business. We were passionate about creating beautiful outdoor living spaces and recognized the potential in focusing exclusively on deck construction. By niching down, we were able to dedicate ourselves to perfecting our craft and providing our clients with exceptional, customized decking solutions. This decision ultimately laid the foundation for the successful and thriving business that Legacy Decks is today.

Q. How did you discover TimberTech products?

A. We’ve always been aware of TimberTech as a top brand in our industry. Our collaboration began when a TimberTech rep connected with our sales team, introducing us to their diverse product lines and innovative technology. After touring their manufacturing facility, we were impressed and started offering TimberTech as an option for our clients. Customer feedback quickly confirmed their preference for TimberTech,

solidifying our partnership and enhancing our outdoor living projects.

Q. What are your preferred TimberTech products, and why?

A. Our top choices among TimberTech products include the Vintage Collection and the PRO Legacy Collection, primarily due to their superior quality and durability. They have a ton of color options, which helps our clients to customize their space. The Vintage Collection has a great wire-brushed finish detail, while the PRO Legacy Collection has a more traditional woodgrain appearance. Both collections are great for resistance to staining, scratching, and fading, which is a huge benefit.

Q. What has business been like since the pandemic ended?

A. Since the pandemic ended, business has been thriving for Legacy Decks. With people spending more

time at home and focusing on improving their living spaces, demand for outdoor living has surged. We have expanded the team and refined our processes to better serve the demand we are seeing.

Q. Where does your project inspiration come from?

A. We draw inspiration from a variety of sources, including client preferences, architectural styles, and the latest design trends. The team also turns to social media platforms like Pinterest, Instagram, and Houzz for ideas, and enjoys collaborating with clients to create unique, personalized spaces that reflect their lifestyles and tastes.

Q. Any projects for which TimberTech was particularly beneficial?

A. Their PVC line has been a game-changer for us. The ability to heat bend the decking allows us to create truly unique and innovative designs that set us apart. Additionally, the multi-width planks offer versatility in design, enabling us to craft exceptional features that cater to our clients’ preferences and enhance the visual appeal of their outdoor spaces. The TimberTech PVC line has been invaluable in elevating our deck designs and meeting our clients’ high expectations.

Q. What’s next for Legacy Decks?

A. As we look to the future of Legacy Decks, our expansion into new markets is a key focus. We are

committed to staying ahead of industry trends and continuously enhancing our offerings. Our recent focus has been on broadening our range of services, incorporating outdoor lighting and custom outdoor features, like pavers and Struxure louvered pergolas, to create even more captivating and functional outdoor spaces. To ensure our team’s expertise and efficiency, we will invest in training and technology that streamlines the design and construction process. At the heart of our mission, Legacy Decks will remain dedicated to delivering exceptional quality and service, guaranteeing that our clients’ outdoor living spaces stand the test of time and bring enjoyment for years to come.

CAMO Specialist of the Year

Green Shield Deck Builders

Q. How did you get your start in construction?

A. Green Shield started in 2019 as a safety products builder (Radon mitigation and water quality). Green Shield offered free radon testing in homes in west Michigan as a goodwill gift to the community. After the appointment, we would offer services to customers who may or may not have been interested in mitigation services. We offered many services including siding, roofing, windows, HVAC and more.

Q. How did you first begin using CAMO?

A. Green Shield started using CAMO after a few months of testing other products and not being able to find an easily repeatable deck fastener for growing crews. We found the CAMO clip and never looked back. The CAMO edge clip is the reason we use all CAMO products, and we cannot stress enough that it is the best clip for the professional deck builder.

Q. Do you ever work directly with CAMO?

A. Green Shield is located in Grand Rapids, MI., which so happens to be the home of CAMO (National Nail). We have worked with CAMO on marketing projects in the west Michigan area and have a strong relationship with the company.

Q. How has business changed in the last year?

A. Green Shield has had the good fortune of partnering with a composite deck manufacturer in the last year to stock our own composite boards and

handle our own logistics. We have truly a white glove experience from the sale to the cleanup of the job that the customers have come to expect. Green Shield has also expanded its dumpster business to provide more dumpsters to our crews. Our dumpsters have a built-in porta-potty to keep crews on the job site. Lastly, we have launched the offering of Northern Crossarm brand KDAT framing products to make our framing better in every way versus standard treated lumber.

Q. Tell us about your team.

A. Green Shield has an elite team of in-house crews. We hire and train all employees in house with the same training materials and testing to ensure a consistent quality outcome. We have an in-house drafting department and full-time permit specialists. We use CAD, drones, and the latest tools to elevate our process. We currently have 22 crews building decks full time, even in the winter—over 100 employees strong.

Q. What’s next for Green Shield?

A. Next steps for Green Shield is to continue to grow in west Michigan and continue to refine our process. Green Shield will eventually seek new markets once ready, likely in 2024 and beyond. Secondly, to continue to strengthen partnerships with manufacturers to retain our best-in-Michigan pricing and unrivaled quality outcomes.

Deckorators Specialist of the Year

All Decked Out

Q. How did you begin using Deckorators?

A. We started using Deckorators after seeing a booth at a trade show in Chicago. Prior to that time, I was only familiar with Deckorators aluminum balusters, but had not heard of the decking until I saw the display and was blown away! I saw its durability first and that started my research to then discover just how different it is from other brands because of the unique technology to its unheard-of warranty. As with any new product, I was hesitant to recommend it to our client’s at first, but I am glad I decided to take the risk, and after just a few installations, I then advocated for our lumberyard to bring it in. I never looked back! I moved on immediately to become a certified installer, and to this day, it is the number one product I recommend and install.

Q. Take us to the beginning of your company.

A. While serving in the Navy, I also worked for a deck and fence company as a second job at the time when we were not out at sea. It was much better being outside working than being cooped up on a ship while in port. A superior officer gave me a chance and took time to train and mentor me—truly he was my starting point. I owe a lot to him and am still grateful he gave me an opportunity.

Specialty: Premier decks and outdoor living

I moved back home to Cincinnati after my enlistment and had setbacks that ultimately led to me having the drive and determination needed to take the risk and start my own business. I built the business literally from the ground up from nothing but the support of my wife and some great opportunities from great clients. No bank loans or investors to help us, just hard work, day in and day out, one deck or fence at a time. I set aside money after each project to put back into the business. I built up enough tools, and purchased another vehicle and hired another crew. We just kept growing and saw a doubling in sales each year for the first five to six years! It mainly came from excellent customer care in an industry where it was lacking, and simple respect of our clients led to them spreading the word for us!

Q. Where do you get your ideas from?

A. Short answer: from listening, education, transparency and building trust. First, we listen to our clients’ needs, wants and dreams for their backyard space. Next, we educate them and share suggestions on design and materials that will help cater to them, but sometimes that may mean that we share a better alternative then their original selection or vision. It is very important to our company to ensure that what-

18 | Deck Specialist | July/August 2023

ever is designed will be the best value for them and not just what vision that designer has that day. We believe that education helps each client to make their best decisions that result in the best outcomes on our projects.

Next, we act as consultants, not salesmen who are trying to hit our sales goals, which we believe will help to continue to build their comfort with us, and ultimately trust. We always hope that a client wants our creative spins so that I can then pull from all the ideas in my head from years of dreaming up spaces, and then my team of installers and I will make them come alive! In our local market, most homeowners don’t have unlimited funds, but are willing to invest for a quality project and experience.

Q. Any projects for which Deckorators was beneficial?

A. I do not have just one in mind because honestly any projects using Deckorators is beneficial to us! We want to only use products that we can trust to perform, and longer term be covered under an amazing warranty. Our reputation is on the line with each project we build and using quality products means we have one less item to be concerned about each day.

Q. Tell me about your team.

A. Our business would be nothing without our people and we invest in them to ensure they know how important they are! As my role changed from being out in the field building to now more focused on design and ownership, it’s been critical to have a team that I can trust

and count on. We have amazing builders that want to learn and grow with us each day. We believe that a person must have some core values innate to be successful long term and know that the carpentry skills can always be trained. Positivity, ethics, determination and the desire to be great is something I can’t teach so that is what we look for first!

We have crews made up of employees and some as subcontracting crews, but we always ensure that everyone is connected as one team with the common goals to take care of our clients and continue to grow. We always strive to give our clients the best contractor experience. It’s hard when all of us build outdoor spaces, but for a homeowner, this might be one of their largest purchases besides their home, and we always have to be mindful of that. Because of the client, we as a team exist!

Q. What’s next for All Decked Out?

A. I was focused on growth, growth, growth for many years. Now we are focusing on getting better processes in place, building into our teams to ensure a long-term “family” business approach, and focusing on improvements in every area we can. We are also looking for ways to stand out from competition in all the ways we do business each day. Our goals are efficiency and mastery of our systems. Excellence is better than growth in size at this moment, and that’s what we are striving for.

DeckWise Specialist of the Year

Sweeting Property Group

Q. How did you become interested in DeckWise?

A. I was drawn to their hidden deck fasteners because of the varied clip sizing they offered. The ability to design board spacing as needed, based on expansion and contraction of the material, as well as the benefits provided regarding pull-through strength, saved time and eliminated waste, and spoke to our individualized approach to each project. Once I began using DeckWise products, I realized that the build quality of DeckWise’s hardwood wrench is second to none. It helps us at job sites of every size, allowing us to have a non-slip “third hand” as we straighten deck boards and ensure that every project is on time, on budget, and on point.

Q. How do you integrate your exterior and interior living spaces?

A. We see this in a variety of ways. Sometimes clients want to bring elements of their exterior hardscape to a high-traffic interior location. The best example of that would be hardwood v-groove ceilings or accent walls in a main living space or great room. Many times, our clients will ask for a deck with ipé, garapa, or cumaru, and then will ask to use the same

material for a hearth, a mantle, or recessed ceiling. We’ll also see a desire for design callbacks with indoor and outdoor showers—using hardwood in a bathroom and then using the same or similar wood in an outdoor shower or other living space. We see requests for poured concrete counters in an outdoor kitchen, and an interior kitchen or other interior space.

Q. How has business been in the past few years?

A. Business has been incredibly busy in the past few years. We noticed a serious uptick in renovation interest in mid-2020, and things truly haven’t slowed since then. Between individuals spending more time in their homes—realizing there were things they absolutely wanted to update—and a pretty big migration to this area in 2021-22, we’ve been really pleased with the consistent interest in all that Sweeting Property Group has to offer clients.

In the past few years, I’ve been working solo with a focus on customization and quality. As a result, I’ve been especially busy, so clients occasionally have to wait a bit to begin their project.

Once we start, however, we see the entirety of their quoted concept through from start to finish.

Q. How did you begin using DuraLife?

A. Tommy: Several years ago, when we were a wood deck building company, I was at the lumberyard picking up material. During this visit, I saw a display of DuraLife. Keep in mind, we exclusively worked with wood, no composite. I love wood, and I still have a passion for it today. Back then, we would not even entertain the idea of building with anything else. Composite, in my opinion, looked cheap and plasticky.

The moment I saw the DuraLife display, my mind was blown. I remember asking the lumberyard about DuraLife. I remember reaching out and grabbing the book off the shelf, flipping through the pages, astonished. Then, there it was—Golden Teak. I knew right then and there on our next home we would build an elaborate deck with DuraLife—and it would be built with Golden Teak.

Fast forward a handful of years and two homes later, we did it; we built a gorgeous DuraLife deck

with inlays and 45s throughout the build. Oddly, Golden Teak did not make the cut. We went with Tropical Walnut, and the variegations really stole the show. You see, Tropical Walnut complements our walnut hardwood flooring throughout our home.

Q. Anything new that’s popular with customers?

A. Today, we are creating a complete outdoor living space. Many of our builds will include outdoor kitchens, a louvered pergola, outdoor fire features, full roof systems, screen enclosures, pools, etc.

In the last year, we have transitioned to steel framing with the help of New Castle Steel. The product is becoming more popular with our clients because of durability and steel framing is aesthetically pleasing.

Another popular item is the LouveRoof adjustable pergola system. Whether standalone ground level or as part of the deck, LouveRoof has proven its popularity giving function and fashion to our builds.

Envision Specialist of the Year

Texas Best Fence & Patio

Q. Tell us how you got your start.

A. We started as a fencing and deck company called Best Fence and Deck. Colby Coward moved to DFW from Anchorage, AK., and started working as a salesman for the company. He worked there for two years before being asked to become a part-owner. Over time, the business expanded to become a fencing and patio company that creates outdoor living spaces for families and friends to enjoy.

Q. How did you first encounter Envision?

A. We first encountered Envision through our supplier, Master Halco. We were impressed with their high-quality product, great aesthetic, and incredible value. We also appreciated that Envision works directly with the supplier to maintain competitive pricing.

Q. How has business been in the past few years?

A. Business has been good for us in recent years, with a growing focus on the outdoor living side of our business, especially during the pandemic when people spent more time at home. We’ve seen a significant

increase in demand for our solutions, and have been working hard to meet that demand while maintaining our high standards of quality and customer service. We’re proud of our team and grateful for our loyal customers who have helped us grow and succeed.

Q. Where does your project inspiration come from?

A. We draw project inspiration from various sources, including the Internet, deck sites, Facebook, Pinterest, and other design experts. We’re always looking for new and innovative ways to create beautiful outdoor spaces for our customers. We love to get creative with our designs and provide our customers with unique and personalized solutions that meet their needs.

Evolution Specialist of the Year

My Deck, LLC

Q. How did your company start?

A. My father was a Sandy Hook harbor pilot, and I planned to follow in his footsteps. As required for this apprenticeship, I was sponsored at 12 years old and, after high school, had begun earning my associate’s degree. I was working for the local road department until a friend offered me a job in his construction company, where I made double the money, loved the work, and picked everything up quickly. I started my own business about a year later, so when I got the invitation for pilots, I decided against a seven-year apprenticeship at minimum wage. By the time I would have been a well-paid, full-branched harbor pilot, I was still learning how to grow my business and wondered if I had made the right decision. Almost four decades later, I have no regrets. I am proud to have

founded my own business, providing employment for nine crews and eight staff, and most recently welcoming Joseph Kalnas as a partner.

Over the past six years Joe has facilitated even greater growth, allowing My Deck to create amazing outdoor living spacings for more clients.

Q. How did you begin using steel framing, and what drew you to Evolution?

A. Decks have always been my passion. I’ve been building them since pressure-treated lumber was used for both framing and decking. While we continued to use this lumber for framing, over the years My Deck has used cedar, mahogany, ipé and other hardwood decking as we upgraded our decking material following industry trends and customer preferences. Today,

26 | Deck Specialist | July/August 2023

composite decking is widely-considered the preferred decking material and used exclusively at My Deck, but it doesn’t work well on pressure-treated framing. As the pressure-treated lumber dries, it moves, and the composite takes on the shape of the warped framing. It is highly visible and impossible to prevent. In an effort to eliminate this challenge, about 12 years ago, we started to experiment with steel framing.

I was introduced to Evolution steel deck framing at the Baltimore Remodeling Show about six years ago and was interested in the concept of steel framing designed specifically for decks. Once we started working with Evolution, as with all new products, we had some ideas that we felt could make the product better, and Fortress Building Products was always willing to listen and incorporate our suggestions.

Q. Any projects for which steel was particularly beneficial?

A. Steel framing is beneficial for all projects, but is especially advantageous for second-level decks with living space underneath because it allows much further spanning with less footings.

Q. What percentage of your jobs do you use steel framing on?

A. We use steel framing on 100% of our decks because, while more expensive, is well worth the investment. Steel provides a better aesthetic and will

never need to be replaced.

Evolution steel deck framing is superior to common steel framing because each joist is a boxed beam and powder coated. Their product line has been designed from the ground up, including support posts for the deck and framing for the stairs so the entire substructure of the deck is steel.

Q. Where does the inspiration for your projects come from?

A. Steel framing has been inspirational for us, giving us greater design freedom. Steel’s strength and durability allows for longer spans and the opportunity to create spaces with less obstructed views.

Evolution’s steel deck framing features a premium, black, sand powder coating that complements all other design elements. Over the years, My Deck has always tested new building materials and techniques to offer our customers only the best in design and construction.

Q. What’s next at My Deck?

A. At My Deck, we will continue to try new technologies. We are proud to partner with companies like Fortress who are willing to consider our feedback as we use their products. Only together can we deliver the finest end products for our shared clients— outdoor living spaces to be enjoyed for years come.

FastenMaster Specialist of the Year

VB Decking

Q. Tell me how VB Decking got its start.

A. In 2015, I decided to depart my corporate job and pursue a career in the remodeling industry. It was always a dream to one day run a business of my own. Over the course of five years, I acquired a diverse set of skills and experience, learning as much as possible from every opportunity.

Unfortunately, the Covid-19 pandemic resulted in a wave of job losses, and I, along with my brother-in-law, Brandon, were let go from our previous employer. As the founder of VB Decking, I established the business on September 19, 2020, as a family and veteran-owned company with a passion for outdoor construction and a desire to transform outdoor spaces into works of art. We pride ourselves on delivering exceptional customer service, innovative deck solutions, and superior craftsmanship.

The company name, VB Decking, is derived from both my first and last name, but also reads as “Vic and Brandon Decking,” representing the strong bond between myself and my brother-in-law, and our shared commitment to delivering the highest quality of work to our clients.

Q. Tell us more about your company.

dential properties. From design to completion, we are committed to making the deck building process as smooth and enjoyable as possible for our clients. We pride ourselves on our attention to detail, strong work ethic, and our commitment to ensuring our clients’ satisfaction.

Q. How did FastenMaster become your primary vendor?

A. FastenMaster became a primary vendor for our company after Brandon and I were introduced to the TC-G Hidden Fastening System and Tiger Claw Gun at a local deck show. Initially, we were skeptical about using the system for our projects as it was just another sales pitch. However, a FastenMaster representative demonstrated the system on one of our projects, and we were impressed with its efficiency and ease of use. The TC-G Hidden Fastening System significantly reduced installation time, making it a game changer for our business. It became an essential part of VB Decking’s toolkit.

Q. What do you draw your project inspiration from?

A. We draw inspiration from a range of sources, including our clients’ visions, industry trends, and the natural beauty of Colorado’s landscape. We under-

stand that every project is unique and deserves a tailored approach, which is why we work closely with our clients to understand their needs and preferences. As a company, we stay up-to-date with the latest innovations and materials in the decking industry, incorporating them into our projects whenever suitable. We as a team are dedicated to providing high-quality craftsmanship, exceptional customer service, and innovative deck solutions that cater to each client’s unique needs and preferences. Ultimately, our goal is to create outdoor living spaces that are not only functional and durable, but also aesthetically pleasing and aligned with our clients’ lifestyles.

Q. How has business been for VB Decking?

A. I’m proud to say that since our inception in 2020, we’ve experienced steady growth and have established a loyal customer base in the Denver area. We believe that our commitment to quality craftsmanship, attention to detail, and exceptional customer service has set us apart from our competitors. We take pride in going above and beyond to ensure that each project we undertake not only meets but exceeds our clients’ expectations.

Our dedication to providing outstanding customer service has likely contributed to our success. By building strong relationships with our clients and prioritizing their satisfaction, we’ve earned their trust and loyalty. As a result, we’ve

received positive word-of-mouth recommendations, which have helped us attract new customers and grow our business.

What’s ahead for VB Decking?

A. We’re always on the lookout for ways to grow and expand our business while keeping our focus on quality and customer satisfaction. Our immediate priority is to continue serving our local community and building upon our reputation as a trusted and reliable decking company. We understand that our success is largely due to our commitment to providing personalized attention and exceptional craftsmanship to each of our clients.

As we look to the future, we hope to expand our services to other areas of Colorado and potentially beyond. However, we’re aware that expansion can be challenging, and we’re committed to maintaining the same level of quality and customer service that we’re known for, no matter where we operate. We believe that our clients appreciate the level of attention and care we provide, and we want to ensure that this remains a priority as we continue to grow.

Ultimately, our goal is to become the go-to decking company for homeowners across Colorado and beyond. We believe that by staying true to our values and always putting our clients first, we can achieve this goal and continue to grow and thrive as a business.

Q. How did you first begin using Fiberon?

A. Around 2008, we tried Fiberon Horizons Ipe color decking. It was a beautiful product and did not have all the issues that other composite deck products had at the time (discoloration, expansion, mold).

Q. Where do you draw your inspiration from?

A. It’s a combination of our own ideas, client ideas, Houzz and pictures from other architects and deck builders, and the Fiberon website.

Q. What are your preferred Fiberon products?

A. Cabana is our best seller, very popular color, goes well with Earl Grey border. It’s the best value to the clients of all the brands—superior scratch resistance, very stiff even though it’s fluted (not fluted as much as the competition). For PVC, Shaded Cay is our best seller. The color is very popular, it’s great value PVC, and it has the best traction.

Q. What’s next for Delta Decks?

A. We will grow, expand, hire more teams and build more beautiful decks.

Deck Remodelers

Q. Take us back to the beginning of Deck Remodelers.

A. Sean McAleer, owner of Deck Remodelers, is a third-generation finish carpenter, who grew up in his father’s architectural woodworking shop; designing and building is literally in his DNA. After owning several businesses over the years (all in the building and construction field), and taking everything that he learned from these prior ventures, Deck Remodelers was born in 2010. Sean had seen that the outdoor living part of the home was extremely lacking, and decided to take this opportunity to make a difference in the way people live outdoors.

Q. How did you first begin using in-lite in your projects?

A. I became aware of in-lite through networking with the top deck builders in Canada that were using in-lite. We had some preliminary calls with them, and after we were satisfied they were the partner we were looking for to help us elevate our lighting game, we went all in. That was in January 2022, and we have been using in-lite exclusively ever since.

Q. Where does your inspiration come from?

A. Bringing the indoors out as an extension of the home, while staying true to the architecture of the home, is one form of inspiration. We also factor in how the clients will live in the space—do they love to entertain? Do they want to be able to have movie

night outside? These all factor into our design inspiration. When designing a project, we bring design elements that reflect the personality of the homeowners, while also keeping it timeless.

Q. Tell me more about a project in which Deck Remodelers used in-lite.

A. One of the projects that sticks out that we used in-lite on is one we call Starry Night, because of the recessed lighting in the floor of the deck. The pattern of alternating-size puck lights, recessed into the floor, seem to dance around the perimeter of the deck. They are accompanied by multiple lights strategically placed around the custom fabricated railing. Below, a fully finished room uses a variety of lighting to showcase its unique features. Up-down lights display the ornate trim above and below the oversize columns, while three down-lights create a brilliantly unique pattern just above the custom feature wall. Each corner below the deck is up-lit by four spotlights, while more subtle twinkling lights were used in the under-deck ceiling.

Q. What’s next for Deck Remodelers?

A. We have a few different things in the works, most of which I can’t mention at this time (hint… big news coming up by the end of the year). What I can say is that we are concentrating on building our team and working on new ways to blur the lines when blending the indoors and outdoors.

MoistureShield Specialist of the Year

Dockside Boat Lifts

Q. How did Dockside get its start?

A. My wife was partners in another boat lift company, and they asked me to come in and help them. Then we split and we became Dockside. We were doing boat lifts for a lot of other contractors or dock builders, and we had one in particular that did premium, higher-end deck work. When he retired, we basically didn’t have anybody to refer that decking business to anymore and so we kind of we just started doing it.

Q. Why do you prefer MoistureShield?

A. The reason is we just don’t have any board failures. We don’t have any problems with it so it’s basically put it down and you kind of forget about it. It’s a perfect fit for water application because you have basically very minimal expansion and contraction of the boards. We can also install it over a boat lift so that actually the entire deck raises and lowers into the water because MoistureShield’s okay with direct water contact or actually being submerged. We don’t have any issues. Now we use it almost exclusively. I would say probably 95% of our new work is

MoistureShield composite. And the other thing is that Cool Deck. That’s something new they came out with and because obviously when you’re doing docks you have no shade unless under a boathouse. Most of our docks on our lake—you’re not allowed to have a boat a roof over it. The Cool Deck really comes into play and most of what we’re doing now is the Cool Deck colors because of the fact that you can actually walk on it barefoot in the middle of the summer.

Q. What’s next for Dockside?

A. We’re booked out close to a year, so somewhere between eight to 12 months, and we’ve stayed six-plus months probably for the last five years. We need to expand by adding more crews, but we really don’t want to do that because every time we do that then you lose some of your quality because you can’t manage. After 25 plus years, we finally decided we’re going to stay around you know 23 to 25 employees— probably never get over 30. We run crews so we do two main carpentry crews and then we have people that go ahead of those to drive the pilings or to build the boat lifts or whatever that are separate.

New Castle

Steel Specialist of the Year

French’s Custom Outdoor Concepts

Q. How did you get started in construction?

A. I started installing hardwood floors over the summer when I was 15 and picked up a room addition here and a fence there. A few years out of high school, I replied to an ad in the newspaper looking for laborers, helpers, leads, and project managers for a new deck company in town. I was hired as a lumber grunt, but after being paired with a lead for the day and proving that I knew how to read a tape and cut a straight line, I was moved up in the ranks.

Q. Why did you first start using New Castle Steel?

A. I considered offering steel framing for a while, but hadn’t messed with it or seen it installed. With changes in building requirements in select municipalities in my area, having firsthand knowledge of the product was a good idea. I decided to pilgrimage to the Steel Sharpens Steel event in Mt. Pleasant, TX., hosted by Extreme Backyard & Beyond, to see the different options and how they differ in quality and installation. I was very impressed with the look and strength of New Castle Steel and that it was manufactured here in the USA. I’ve worked with many

different products over the years, but I only have the owner’s personal cell phone number for one—and that’s Jason (Alloway)—and that’s New Castle Steel.

Q. What’s ahead for your company?

A. I’ve always felt like I marched to the beat of my own drum. I always do things differently than the rest. Owning my own company and embracing that drumbeat to its full potential allows me to design things that represent who I am as an individual and a brand. Thank God I have a group of guys that work with me that jam out to the same song.

I’m taking my company to a spot where I’m known, hands down, as the local expert of proper building techniques and how to implement those techniques into genuine custom works of art. I want to merge interior elements with the exterior and make the flow seamless. I want to make my place as the outdoor living design-build company that does custom, unique work like you see in the deck we were nominated for. We used New Castle Steel framing for the deck, but the pergola is also New Castle Steel clad in Deckorators decking. Incredible.

Q. Tell us more about a project in which you used MOSO bamboo decking.

A. The above-mentioned customer chose to use MOSO bamboo for the upcoming deck product. The project being an approximate 1,000 sq. ft., flat and verticals on a bi-level deck with built-in planter boxes.

I found working with MOSO bamboo would be a medium to expert skill level, with extra attention to cutting, pre-drilling and fastening. The final product speaks for itself in clean lines, strength and durability and in an exotic appearance which can blend with any environment.

Q. What’s next for your company?

A. As a new company, branching out on my own, I look to continue satisfying my customers, making their visions and dreams a reality, one project at a time.

Longview Decks

Q. How did Longview Decks get its start?

A. I started Longview Decks on July 1, 2010, out of my garage and the bed of my truck. My primary background is in fast-food management, car sales and car sales management. And when I started to think about the idea of starting this business, I was in a different business category altogether. My dad asked me to help finish a small deck project he was working on for a customer with a new mobile home, so I worked with him for the weekend to get it wrapped up. While working, I started wondering, “Can mobile home dealerships add decks into the purchase of a home the same way a car dealership can add leather to a car purchase?” So, the following Monday, I drove around mobile home dealerships and began asking questions. I was able to learn more, and what I heard encouraged me to make a life-changing decision. By the end of the following Monday, I had a 4x4 deck built, mounted on a homemade trailer with a banner, name and telephone number, and I drove it all over East Texas. I sold the hell out of it to anyone with a set of ears. I visited 20 different mobile/modular home dealerships within a week, and the rest, as they say, is history.

We have never been afraid to just jump out there and take on whatever projects we can to help us grow and get better. The more custom the better.

Q. What drew you to using ProWood products in your projects?

A. ProWood has been our lumber of choice since it was introduced to us in 2022. The most important reason being the product’s appearance. The dyed color into the treatment allows the wood to keep a lighter, more natural look while also maintaining its color. There are not too many options on the market that can offer this type of product at this price point.

Q. What’s next for Longview Decks?

A. The sky is the limit! We recently gained possession of a 30,000-sq. ft. warehouse and 4-acre yard. Every year has been an up year for us going on 12 years straight. At the end of year one, we did $35,000 in annual sales. But by the end of year 12, we did $3.4 million in annual sales. Our 2030 year-end goal is to be a $10 million plus company with multiple locations. The sky is the limit!

Their craftmanship and communication with the client are what produce the finished project. We have the upmost confidence in the individual skills of each of our employees to provide our clients with a masterful final product.

A. One of our favorite products is the Avalon railing line. It looks the best, installs the easiest, and offers a multitude of options to our clients. The new decorative screen infills that we installed on a project last year turned out incredible!

TIVADEK Specialist of the Year

The Deck Store, Inc.

Q. Take us to the beginning of The Deck Store.

A. The Deck Store was founded in 2007. At that time, the decking industry was being revolutionized by an influx of low-maintenance products. Consumers were limited in where they could see a good selection of materials and talk to experts in the deck industry who knew the benefits and limitations of these products. Our first showroom was opened in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, in the fall of 2008 to meet the demand of consumers looking to view and educate themselves on various decking products, railing materials and accessories all in one location. The Deck Store quickly gained a reputation for being the only place in Ontario where someone could go and see samples of almost every deck board in the market, as well as get solid, helpful and honest advice from the team members.

Q. How did you discover TIVA Building Products?

A. We have established a close relationship with TIVA in that we were selected by them to field test their product before it was introduced to the market. We met them while on a trip to Asia and established a good relationship with the manufacturer. Since then, the company has expanded into North America and we have continued to work with them by providing

valuable “in the field” feedback on colors, embossing, technology and customer feedback.

Q. What are your preferred TIVA products?

A. Their Designer series—colors are very vibrant and work well in most settings.

We also love the fact that TIVA fascia is a full 3/4” thick and can be installed using screws and plugs.

The generous thickness also makes it very stable and prevents it from buckling and creating a wavy look in the heat.

TIVACoat and TIVATape are products that we offer to our clients as they add longevity to the project and provide extra profitability for our company.

Q. Where does your project inspiration come from?

A. From getting to know the clients and working with them to develop a design that is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also very functional and well thought out with respect to space utilization. It’s not just about a pretty picture for our gallery or for social media—it’s about creating an outdoor living space that works for the client with respect to their budget, how it ties in with their home, and maximizes their ability to use and enjoy.

ProBuilt Construction

Q. How did ProBuilt Construction get its start?

A. After serving in the Army, I opened my own construction business in 1974. My brother taught me all about construction. We had a great thing going. His company would precut and sell deck “kits,” and I would assemble these kits for homeowners. One day, we built a 10’x10’ pressure-treated wood deck off of the back of a townhome that was under construction. At the end of the day, the builder stopped by and said, “I can’t believe you built this in a day! How would you like to build 500 of these?” That is how ProBuilt Construction got its start building decks on our own.

Q. How did Trex become a primary vendor?

A. I clearly remember building my first Trex deck in 2000 in Ellicott City, MD. ProBuilt was the deck subcontractor for a local home builder, and this builder was working on a brand-new 55+ single-level duplex community called Turf Valley. Back then, the majority of my work was for home builders. I proposed to put Trex on the model home, but the home builder wanted to stick with wood. Trex was a new product on the market. I thought this would be a good option for this community. However, the builder was okay allowing us to offer the Trex as an upgrade to homeowners, which I did—to the home directly adjoining the model home that had its own wood deck. While the model did not have a Trex deck, the adjoining neighbor did, and every person who went to the model walked out onto the model deck made of wood, saw the neighbor’s brand new Trex deck and said, “What is that? I want that!” Every deck in that community was eventually built with Trex decking, and from then on, the builder spec’d Trex for all their communities.

In 2002, I remember the day the rep stopped by to hand deliver me my first TrexPro Contractor card, telling me ProBuilt was going to be one of the original builders to be part of this program. In 2022, ProBuilt was recognized by Trex at an awards ceremony because we have worked with Trex for over 20 years, something we are very proud of.

Facebook.com: Decks Unlimited Incorporated

Specialty: Unique decks and railings

Q. How did you get your start in construction?

A. I started working in construction over 30 years ago at the age of 15. During the summer months back in high school I worked for my father, a general contractor, remodeling homes, doing roofing, siding and building decks. After high school I started my own company, Decks Unlimited, and for 25 years now I have followed my passion creating unique deck designs. Specializing in composite materials, we were the first in our area to design and create decks utilizing two-tone colors, borders, custom inlays and curves. Although we offer wood frame projects, 80% of our work is framed with steel and we lean toward helical piers.

Q. Where do you draw your inspiration from?

A. I enjoy the challenge of creating unique and creative projects that the clients love. Having been blessed to win multiple NADRA awards, my father is the one who inspired me to specialize in decks and the challenge is what continues to motivate me and my designs.

Q. How did you first start using Westbury?

A. I started using Westbury a decade ago and it’s our go-to rail. I believe it’s the best railing out there. We love the VertiCable railing system.

Q. Take us to the beginning of Windeck.

A. Mel Dueck, founder, and principal owner of Windeck: I’ve been a part of the decking and railing industry for 42 years. The first 12 years was primarily wooden fences and decks. I became the leader in the wooden deck industry, however the never-ending question by customers was how often will I scrape, paint or stain, and replace rotten deck boards, joists, beams, or the entire deck? This led me to researching what products could alleviate these concerns and give us an edge over our competition.

Q. How did you discover Wolf Home Products?

A. I reached out to a few suppliers and decided the best prod-

ucts at that time were S.T.A.R. Aluminum Railing, and Duradek. With those two products, I launched a new company, Windeck Ltd., May 10, 1993, now 30 years old. After 21 years, our team realized we needed an audible play. We starting to miss out on business by not having a high-quality synthetic deck board. Once again, I did due diligence in seeking different product lines that were best in industry. I sampled many different products and Wolf Home Products fit our customers’ needs the best. Bob and Mark from Wolf Home Products were amazing to deal with and supportive in helping us set up our Wolf distributorship, from product knowledge-to-training. Wolf made the trip to Winnipeg, whereupon a strong business relationship was cemented. The appearance and benefits made it an easy sale to dealers, contractor and homeowners.

Q. Any projects for which Wolf products were particularly beneficial?

A. The wholesale part of our company grew very rapidly, and Wolf Products helped grow all our product lines. Coupled with strong radio, television, social media, and website, we became recognized as a one-stop shop for outdoor decking.

Q. Where does your project inspiration come from?

A. Windeck has received some of the highest design awards at NADRA within the last five years, and are looking to compete once again. Along with my

professional team, we gather for inspiration and design ideas where our “war room” thinking is created. We have learned creating a competitive environment, mixed with a team-centered mentality unlocks the key to being the best designers in our industry. The fresh new ideas born in war room is what I believe separates the decks from #sexydecks.

Q. What are your preferred Wolf products?

A. I appreciate the versatility to install LED lighting into our deck designs, which was a much bigger challenge before we carried the Wolf Products. We presently carry the Wolf Serenity Series.

Q. How has business been in the past few years?

A. Windeck experienced record sales during the pandemic, due to isolation and families spending more time in their backyards. Sales stabilized last year when people were able to travel again, combined with the growing concerns of increased living costs and supply chain issues. I remain optimistic this year will be a record by a landslide.

Q. What’s next for Windeck?

A. Windeck’s goal is growing the supply side of our business and continuing to compete North American wide for top design-built decks. It’s an absolute honor, to have been selected Wolf Home Products Deck Specialist of the Year. “Do it once, do it right.”

YellaWood Specialist of the Year

Cedarbrook Outdoor Design/Build, Inc.

Q. How did Cedarbrook Outdoor get started in construction?

A. I began working in construction at a young age with my father and grandfather. I continued working and learning different construction fields as summer jobs all through college. After college, I started working for a large construction company that specialized in outdoor construction. After several years with that company, I realized the company’s vision and my own were no longer in alignment. I saw there was a growing need in the Washington, D.C., area for custom outdoor living spaces and I wanted to fill that void. In 2006, I opened the doors at Cedarbrook.

Q. How did you first begin using YellaWood?

A. We began using YellaWood in 2016. At that time, it was not always stocked with our local suppliers so we were using many different types of treated lumber (some good, some bad). In 2021, the Extreme Treated YellaWood product became available in our market, and we met with local distribution channels to make sure it would be readily available, and we could use this on every project. This was critical to us so that we could stand by our guarantee to our clients of offering the best available materials.

Q. Where does your project inspiration come from?

A. My inspiration comes from the client, most often. Our vision is to create functional environments for families that instills pride while allowing them to truly relax and find enjoyment in their own home as the dynamics of homelife evolve and change. I also enjoy traveling and seeing how outdoor living spaces are designed throughout other parts of the world.

Q. What’s ahead for Cedarbrook Outdoor?

A. Our main focus moving forward is to continue improving the customer experience and our general portfolio of work. Cedarbrook will continue to grow our outdoor showroom to include outdoor kitchens, furniture, and pergolas. We feel that it is important for our clients to be able to see the variety of high-quality products they are purchasing.

We are also planning on having educational Saturdays for the local metropolitan community to come and tour our showroom, meet our staff, and learn about the different materials. Education and community are very important to the Cedarbrook team, and I can definitely see us going more in that direction.

Where do you rank as a deck builder?

IFYOU WERE to rate yourself as a competitor in your market, how would you compare with those you compete with?

Do you see differences, or are you just a version of others? How do you think potential customers perceive your company? If a potential customer has three proposals, why should they choose you?

What does it take to be a Deck Specialist Award-winning builder like the others in this issue?

How you’re perceived matters. It matters in terms of staying busy when a market tightens. And it matters in a good market to maximize profits.

If you’re perceived to be like others, you have to charge the same as others. You’re just one of many in a customer’s mind.

There have to be discernible differences to justify and allow an increased price tag for your services. The types of projects you deliver, the manner of approach, and processes you utilize to deliver them directly affect the results you’ll have as a builder. Adopting premium products and custom details as a standard and signature of your company provides benefits for your positioning and reputation.

The simpler a project is to deliver and the less skill it takes, the more who will be competing for it. Ease of build usually equals lower pricing and profit. If this is where you choose to compete, that’s fine, but those who demonstrate a better and best-delivery history will look better to a prospect than someone

who shows a diluted mixed bag of project types.

Skill levels also factor in, but for most it’s the attitude of approach—which includes motivation, ambition, and competitiveness—that drives builders to be better. Many evolve and improve over time in quality, creativity, and process. Many get better with developing people skills and approaches to communication and sales. As their confidence in themselves and the value they offer rise, so too will their pricing.

Don’t think that because you’re “staying busy” now means that you don’t need to implement elements that shape your future trajectory as a builder. Staying busy doesn’t necessarily mean you’re healthy as a business. Don’t just settle for making good wages as a self-employed business owner. Strive to create another bank account of accrued company profits aside from your production earnings.

It takes years for most builders to refine their skills, fine-tune production, and balance their business in order to advance to the point they can deliver higher-end projects in a clean and efficient way. The sky’s the limit for those who are creative, take pride in their work, and possess ambition, discipline, and people skills. You don’t have to build a huge company—you just have to build the right kind of company. You can have good success operating as a one-crew operation if you approach it correctly and there’s an opportunity to grow your company through margin, instead of production.

The objective is to raise your credibility to a high

52 | Deck Specialist | July/August 2023
PARKS AND DECK CREATION BOBBY PARKS

level and your perceived risk by the customer to a low setting. If you can adopt a building philosophy that includes a high standard of job types; take, edit, organize, and present photos on an iPad (not a cell phone), and build up solid reviews, you’re positioning yourself for better results. If you can add an effective website and communicate simple messaging to that, you’ve laid down a solid foundation.

These skills strengthen your credibility and value:

• Possessing refined people skills.

• Being a good listener and communicator.

• Having a solid process.

• Being organized in how you present, price, and deliver proposals.

This is simple professionalism. The more of these aspects you accumulate, the more you will separate yourself from others in your market. These elements along with your realization of your value impacts the price you’ll charge for your jobs. It will allow you to grow your company with margin instead of production. This applies if you’re a one-man show or a multicrew-based operation.

Most customers are risk averse and will pay higher prices if you create the layers of credibility and show a reduced risk factor. They will spend more with

those that appear to be above average, that provide a perceived guarantee of delivering what they want versus an average proposal, and instill the hope that they’ll get what they want.

But it has to be a clear choice. They must believe in you. Showing a consistent delivery history of job types creates comfort for a customer. It really comes down to what you want to do, what you want to be known for, and what your financial goals are.

In today’s world, it’s not that hard to stand out in a good way. You don’t have to be the “top builder,” but you do need to be in the group of best builders. Do a self assessment to determine where you stand now and what you want to accomplish. It may take time to put the pieces in place. Strive to create building and business side balance. Adopt the right building philosophy and set goals to improve your business step by step. Then re-ask yourself: “Where do I rank in my market?”

Well, I’ll be a dirty word

MY DIRTY four-letter words, such as deck builder and blue collar, like a badge of honor—guys like us have earned the right.

IWEAR

Our necks have been burned to a leathery RED from too much sun. The whites of our eyes are bloodshot from hard days and longer nights.

The ol‘ collar may be as blue as the veins bulging from every muscle in our beat-up bodies, but after years of construction, we carry loads that would bow the knees of an Army mule. At the end of the day, we bleed our country’s colors with the same pride as our forefathers. Yet, somehow the words deck builder and blue collar have become four-letter dirty words.

Since the end of WW2, returning servicemen, carpenters, tradesmen, and blue-collar tradesmen became the backbone of America and its economy. They became synonymous with the middle class that carried North America into the 21st century. However, in the last decade or so, there has been a notion that hard, construction-type work is beneath the younger generations. The younger generation seems to prefer to go hundreds of thousands into debt instead of learning a trade. Little do they realize how lucrative and rewarding being a Deck Specialist can be.

Deck Specialists have come a long way. We no longer live in shanties; we reside in the same neighborhoods as our clients. We drive luxury vehicles, sports cars, watercraft and off road vehicles. Our children go to the schools of our choosing, public or private. They aren’t forced to wear Bi-Lo Bombers, Keds, or Chucks (unless they want to). We attend the same churches, and shop in the same stores.

Our children play on the same sports teams. Yet, the moment they call us to create that high-end outdoor living space for them, we get demoted from neighbor to dirty four-letter words like deck builder and blue collar. These words become as demeaning as an F bomb. We are treated like their employees instead of their peers. They no longer care if we went to college or have a degree equal to or greater than theirs; nor do they care about our extensive years of experience, just what kind of a deal we can give them. They look down their noses and across their table, measuring and assessing, generally, mistakenly assuming their portfolio is larger than ours. We’ve all been there. They are bragging about the $60k car in the driveway while we have a $70-90k truck parked next to it. Yet, we are the dirty word.

One local builder relayed this to me:

“We had a doctor three doors up the street inquire about a deck. He and some buddies were originally going to do it since “anyone can build a deck.” After comparing my numbers and projected work days to the material list from the box store, he said I was making as much as he does and I have no right to charge that much. “I’m a doctor and I went to college,” the client bellowed. I just laughed and put my book away, wished him and his buddies luck, chuckled at the femininity of his handshake, thanked his wife, and left with a grin on my face. Wasn’t going to give any satisfaction to his insult. Six months later, his wife hired us.”

I tapped a few more contractors from around the country for some similar anecdotes. Dave from

SET THE STANDARD BRENDAN CASEY
DECK BUILDER and blue collar are titles worn proudly by the men and women who have built the industry to where it is today.

Southern California relayed this to me: “This highly successful, national award-winning deck builder and outdoor living specialist said that while on an appointment, he found himself thoroughly embarrassed by the fact that even though he graduated from an Ivy League college, the client treated him as though he were a dirty blue-collar worker in a white-collar home, even though his own home was much nicer than the client’s. He couldn’t understand the shame he was being made to feel until we discussed it further. He was actually sensing the insecurities of a client who was probably coming to the realization that his outdoor living specialist was most assuredly more successful than himself.”

Another anecdote was relayed to me by Clint Webb who along with his wife, Jackie, owns and operates the national award-winning Webb Decks (@webbdecks on IG and @deckbuilding101 on Facebook) in Godfrey, IL. Their kids Kylen and Christina run the Deck Building 101 page on Facebook.

Clint had a slightly different approach: “My journey in this industry began working for Clyde, a well-respected home builder and WW2 vet.” Clyde spoke of a time when tradesmen were as well respected as doctors, lawyers, and teachers. He discussed how it is our responsibility to regain that respect through our character and workmanship.

We can avert some of this dirty word discrimination by exercising a little more attention to our own personal presentation—first impressions are lasting. We all like to be comfortable in shorts, but I have found my closing ratio to be 10 points higher when wearing (khaki cargo) pants. Set appointment times so they make your time equally as important as your client’s. Your vehicle should always be clean, washed and waxed; it shows professionalism and attention to detail. Always make sure you are armed with more knowledge than the client or your competitors. You are the expert. The more you separate yourself, the more you drop the stigma and become a peer. When the client recognizes you as a business professional, they are likely to spend more with you. Be the consummate professional that is always “Setting the Standard.”

reMarkable 2 writing tablet

A DECK isn’t as simple as grabbing a tape measure and a saw. We all know there’s a whole lot more to it than meets the eye. You’ve got to tackle marketing, design, quoting, selling, scheduling, and a bunch of other tasks before you can even think about picking up that trusty hammer.

BUILDING

Most of these tasks require taking notes or making drawings. This is normally handled by juggling multiple notebooks that are bursting at the seams with all your important job details. But let’s face it, those notebooks can be a real pain. They fill up fast, get all crumpled or lost and always seem to get ruined from spilled coffee. And, honestly, they’re just not cutting it anymore. It’s time to save a few trees and hop on the digital notetaking train.

Thankfully, Decking TNT has uncovered a true gem that we feel will help a deck builder’s life get easier and more organized—the reMarkable 2 tablet. This cutting-edge device has seamlessly blended the worlds of technology and old school notetaking, offering a simple platform and a user friendly application that is proving to be an absolute gamechanger for making things simpler. In this review, we will dive into the features and practical applications

of this innovative note pad, revealing how it has become an indispensable companion for those striving for better organizational skills and efficiency in the deck building industry.

As we dove into this product, we quickly started to field test it and see how it would impact our daily tasks as deck builders. Here is our experience with the reMarkable 2.

Mike: I am always looking for ways to level up, but sometimes change is hard. I wanted to find a way to organize and share my sticky notes, “Tops” yellow pads, graph paper, notebooks, etc. I tried online apps like Google Keep and Apple Notes, but nothing I found could take the place of the old pen to paper. Personally, I have always retained information better when I physically write it down. So when I started using the reMarkable 2, it felt so natural. I quickly realized that this was the product that I have been looking for.

Andy: “I also have always been an old school paper and pen guy, using a notepad or graph paper to take notes and measurements. So when I got my hands on this product to test it out, I was skeptical of it. I despise the learning curve of new

technologies; however, it is so simple to use. The moment you open the box and power on your new reMarkable, you can start taking notes. No training or trying to figure out how to use it.

The reMarkable 2 also has connectivity options, including Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, making it easy to transfer files and notes to and from other devices. It has a USB-C port for charging and data transfer. This allows your notes to be viewed on any device that can sign in with your account information

Andy: As a creative deck builder/creator, my drawings have lots of details and notes. Downloading the reMarkable app on my laptop and phone was another awesome feature. I am able to import my CAD drawings and group them in the correct job folder. I can use the drawings to make material list and mark details and share them with my team. It’s so easy. I was a little disappointed to find out there was a monthly fee for the Connect feature. I did not expect that based on the advertisements, but luckily they currently offer the first year of service free with purchase. When I recommend this to people I make sure to mention that there is a monthly fee of $2.99 to use Connect.

Mike: It’s basically a thin tablet that stores and organizes your notes, specifically made for writing on it. It’s the perfect bridge between pen to paper and the digital world we live in. It has a 10.3”, highresolution E Ink display and is extremely thin, providing a natural writing experience. There is minimal lag when writing or drawing, making the experience mimic writing on paper. It doesn’t have a backlight, which makes it hard to see in the dark, but works well inside and outside in the daylight. For such a thin device, the battery life is impressive, I can go days between charges. Best of all, everything can be organized in folders and with notebook names so that when I go back to review it, I can actually find it. It’s really a unique writing experience. When the pen tip first hit the screen, I was amazed.

Andy: After using the reMarkable 2 about a week just taking notes and measurements, I started to understand that this device is much more than just taking simple notes. I was able to create folders and tabs. I made a folder for all my measurements, current project notes, my “Today” list, etc. This was so helpful with keeping me organized. Before, I didn’t know where to start with the pen and paper. I would always lose the note or something would happen, causing me to miss details and add stress to my day.

Andy: The pen is what I think makes this special. I was using the Marker Plus with the built-in eraser and would recommend having this feature. The marker is magnetic and gets stored right on the side of your reMarkable 2. It has no battery (this is one less thing to worry about) and it feels great. The

eraser is awesome! I can mark up plans and make quick notes, then erase the notes leaving the plans unharmed.

The pen is pressuresensitive, allowing you to create fine lines and variations in thickness just as you would with a traditional pen or pencil. You can click to erase with the regular marker, or upgrade to a marker with a built-in eraser. The device also supports multi-touch gestures, making it easy to navigate and interact with notes and files.

The reMarkable 2 runs on a custom operating system that has been optimized for low-power consumption and fast performance. The OS provides a super-simple user interface that makes it easy to organize notes and files.

Mike: If you were trying to compare it to a tablet, the functions will seem very limited and simple, but I feel like this what makes the experience so great. You don’t get distracted with pop-ups from Instagram, or emails while you are writing. This is not for searching the web or getting directions, it is truly a notebook. Because of its limitations, it does the notebook thing extremely well. We all have those specialty tools in our toolbox that do one thing and do it well. From the moment you turn it on, it starts up in seconds and when you begin navigating folders and files they come up instantly. There are selections for what type of marker tip, and lots of options for paper types. The pen is weighted and feels perfect in your hand. As mentioned before, it actually does feel like you are writing on paper.

Andy: Working in the field or visiting the project for the first time to get measurements, we deal with all sorts of environmental conditions. I’m from northeast Ohio and I deal with rain and snow more than I like. In the past, it’s been a struggle with pen and paper getting saturated and becoming unrecognizable. So I tried this out on a rainy day to put it to the test. The product was durable and works just as good when the surface gets a little wet. It’s not waterproof, but will take a small beating—and to top it off, it won’t blow away!

Andy: I am left handed and I kept hitting the X-out button. It was a pain until I realized that I could hit a button that made the X-out button go away. This was a wow factor for me.

Mike: Going digital with your notes will be one more thing that can set you a step ahead of your competition. You’ll be able to take notes at home, on the jobsite, at a seminar, and keep all your devices in perfect sync. Whether you’re brainstorming

Contractor’s Corner

Tools are constantly changing and getting better. The need for a quick and precise cut is always upon us in the decking industry. That’s why when Festool fused the power of a circular saw with the precision of a track saw, the HKC 55 was born. Marketed as a hand-held miter saw system, it doesn’t disappoint.

The guys at Lakeside Decking Company in the Lake Minnetonka area of Minneapolis, MN., put the HKC 55 to use every day:

“The ease of use and accuracy is on par with what we have come to expect from Festool. There are times on decks when we don’t even set up our miter saw station. We only bring out the HKC 55. And it’s in those times when we are fighting over

deck designs, keeping track of project milestones, or impressing your clients with professional digital notes and sketches on your sales meeting, this is the game-changer you’ve been waiting for.

Other awesome features:

1. Converting handwriting to typing.

2. Different types of “notebooks”—graph paper, Today list, etc.

3. Ease of getting customer signatures.

“It takes abuse well and remains accurate while providing cuts at angles that a miter saw can’t achieve,” Ferri added. “The HKC has certainly allowed us to take our custom deck building to another level. Paired with the Festool track saw, these two are unbeatable.”

Cons: pen can lose the tip easily, zooming in seems to be glitchy, marker tips wear out and need replacement, hard to see in the dark.

The power of SEO for deck builders

INA WORLD that moves at an ever-increasing pace, where convenience is king and technological advancements shape our lives, optimizing your online presence is crucial to stay ahead of the curve and leave your competition in the dust.

Imagine potential customers searching for deck builders and finding your website front and center. By appearing at the top of search engine results, you not only increase your chances of being seen but also enhance your credibility and trustworthiness. SEO enables you to make a strong first impression, establish yourself as an expert, and win the hearts of customers looking for your services.

In this article, I’ll unlock the SEO secrets tailored for deck builders. From keyword research and website optimization to local SEO strategies and content creation, I’ll guide you through the essential steps to catapult your business to the forefront of search engine rankings. Get ready to conquer the online landscape and watch your business soar!

What exactly is SEO?

SEO, which stands for search engine optimization, is the secret sauce that gets your website to the top of search engine result pages, such as Google. When people are actively searching for a deck builder in your area, SEO ensures that your website catches their attention and appears as the top choice. It’s all about optimizing your website and various factors to

Why is SEO important for deck builders?

Let’s take a closer look at the numbers. There are over 450,000 monthly searches from potential customers looking specifically for deck-building services. And when you consider geographic modifiers like “near me,” “local,” or “x city,” that number easily doubles. Long story short, if your website isn’t showing up for one of those searches, you are losing out on a lot of potential customers.

You may be saying at this point…”But I get the bulk of my leads from referrals.” While referrals are undoubtedly valuable, relying solely on them may limit your growth potential. Embracing SEO empowers you to proactively reach new customers and secure quality projects.

After all, it’s impossible to thrive if people don’t know about your business.

please those search engine algorithms and attract potential customers.

Additionally, SEO is a cost-effective marketing strategy compared to paid advertising. With paid advertising like Google Ads, once you stop investing the faucet of leads is turned off. However, when you implement effective SEO strategies, it acts as a sustainable long-term marketing approach that continues to drive customers to your business over time. The following organic traffic results achieved by deck builders across the county are a testament to the power of SEO.

Would you like to see an additional 4,000 eyeballs on your website each month?

What does it take to rank #1 on Google?

From a high-level perspective, you have to satisfy the search algorithm’s hunger for EEAT, an acronym which stands for:

Experience - Google wants to know that you are a real person. Show your experience with project examples that include your personal impressions.

Expertise - Similar to “experience,” but with more validation by showcasing your credentials and qualifications.

Authority - Get a high-authority website that will keep the popular kids talking about and linking back to your content.

Trust - Provide a secure website—one that loads quickly, is easy to use, and proves you are real by listing your address at minimum.

Want to get some practical next steps?

Here are a few key steps to make Google happy and improve your website’s visibility:

Keyword Research: Identify the most relevant keywords for your unique services—specify cities you work in, and research volume. Tools like Google Keyword Planner, WordStream, or SpyFu can assist you in this process.

Website Optimization: Create a user-friendly website that targets your chosen keywords. Develop individual pages for each service and project in each city you serve. Optimize your website’s content, including titles, headings, meta descriptions, and footer information with all the keyword love to help search engines understand the relevance of your website to search queries.

User-Friendly Website: Design a user-friendly website that provides a seamless and enjoyable experience for visitors. Implement clear navigation menus, intuitive layouts, and mobile-friendly responsiveness. A well-designed website not only enhances the user experience, but also reduces bounce rates, indicating to search engines that your site is valuable and worthy of higher rankings.

Local SEO: Targeting customers in your specific location is crucial for deck builders. You’d be

surprised how many deck builder websites I see that I can’t even tell what city or state they are in. Incorporate location-specific keywords throughout your website, including in your content, metadata, and off-site business listings.

Content Creation: Establish a blog on your website to provide ongoing updates and valuable information that your customers will find helpful in their decisionmaking journey. Regularly publish fresh content related to frequently asked questions or anything a potential customer would need to know before investing in a new outdoor living space. This not only enhances your website’s visibility, but also positions you as an authoritative resource in the industry.

Off-Site Optimization: Optimize your Google Business Profile by providing accurate and detailed information about your business, including your address, phone number, operating hours, and services. Acquire citations (mentions of your business name, address, and phone number) across reputable online directories and platforms. Encourage satisfied customers to leave positive reviews to enhance your online reputation and improve search engine rankings. Additionally, consider leveraging content syndication to strategically distribute and promote your content on relevant platforms to increase your visibility and drive more traffic to your website.

SEO may seem like a complex concept, but by following a few of these steps, you can start improving your website’s visibility, attract more targeted traffic, and ultimately increase the number of prospects that are ready to go. Remember that SEO is an ongoing process so don’t expect instant results. Monitor and analyze your website’s performance regularly, make adjustments as needed, and stay up to date with the latest SEO trends and best practices.

Don’t underestimate the power of SEO in shaping the success of your business in today’s digital landscape. Start optimizing your website today for longterm success. The rewards are waiting for you.

To help you kickstart your SEO journey, you can download a list of the most commonly searched deck builder keywords along with an SEO checklist at deckbuildermarketers.com/resources.

A Family Affair

Investor Jeremy Promes wanted to build the “the nicest campground in the state of Nebraska” with a covered picnic area and deck that renters could use for parties and grilling. So who did he turn to for help in building the outdoor space? His brother, a Trex Pro builder, of course.

“We initially built the picnic shelter with the intentions of building a deck the following year,” said Jason Promes, of Promes Construction LLC, Yankton, S.D.

The picnic area was built for the Eagles Roost RV & Cabin campground, located near Gavin’s Point Dam in Crofton on the Nebraska side of the Missouri River.

In the second phase of the project, a 14'x30' deck was built with 18- and 20-ft. Trex Transcend boards left over from previous projects.

The deck project presented a unique challenge. Notching a 4x4 post, though against code regulations, was done to elevate the deck’s structural integrity. The decision to use rough cedar, known for its resistance to warping, further solidified the strength and aesthetic appeal. This allowed for a seamless integration of the Trex border without compromising its integrity by notching around the posts.

The colors of the decking complemented the rough cedar posts that were stained with Ready Seal Exterior Wood Stain, Pecan No. 115 to match the existing picnic shelter posts.

In addition, custom cast-iron railing infills were installed inside rough cedar frames. The infills featured fish, ducks and other wildlife to reflect the untamed beauty of the area.

“I thought the deck turned out as best as it could have and fit the campground and river view perfectly,” Promes concluded.

Next year, after the landscaping is completed, steps will be added to the west side of the deck. DS
