Depot Launches On-Line Sales
Come autumn, Home Depot expects to be selling merchandise over its Web site, according to Jeff Cohen, head of direct marketing.
Despite misgivings from fellow executives about whether people will use the Internet for product sales, Cohen is steadfast in his belief to the contrary. "It's not a question of if we're going to be in this business," he said. "It's a question of how big, how fast."
Recently, Depot's existing Web site began providing di-yers with tips for home improvements, such as how to calculate the amount of paint or wallpaper needed for a particular project. The company hopes this will help familiarize customers with the site and pave the way for future sales.
Cohen believes the Web site will coexist well with the firm's 822 stores, particularly for merchandise pick-up and deliveries.
