message from the board I would like to begin this month’s President’s Message by recognizing Kevin Kinney, former BCA President and current BCA National Chief Judge for his years of service SID MEYER to the club. As BCA PRESIDENT many of you may know, Kevin passed away recently from a long term illness. A memorial service is planned for a later date. He left us much too soon and may he rest in peace. Although this subject has been mentioned before and we have sent email blasts to all members regarding this matter, I recently received two phone calls regarding emails that supposedly originated from me or possibly other BCA Board members. These emails always seem very innocent by usually asking how the recipient is doing and/or are they available at the moment. If the recipient responds, the next email usually asks for the recipient to procure a gift card in some dollar amount, sometimes as much as $500.00. Please understand that none of the BCA Board members would ever contact any BCA member in this fashion. If you are ever contacted in this way and you are unsure if you should respond, you can look at the sender’s email address. If that email address is not as it is listed in the Bugle, you then know that it is a scam. The BCA Board of Directors has recently reviewed and negotiated new work contracts for several of our paid contractors. You will be happy to know that everything went well and we should be set going forward. I also would like to thank all of our contractors for their outstanding work efforts on behalf of the BCA and the Bugle.

Since this is the February 2022 issue, it is not too soon to start thinking about BCA supported activities you might want to participate in this year. You should certainly consider making plans and reservations for the upcoming BCA National Meet in Lisle, IL. This will undoubtedly be an outstanding meet with, hopefully, excellent attendance since no national BCA meet has been held for the last two years. Also, please consider being a judge for the 2022 BCA National Meet. It is a great way to meet new people and learn additional information about our cars. As always, judges' training will be provided along with a free breakfast. New Buick Club of America grille badges are now available. The badges are approximately 3 inches in diameter and are a copy of the BCA logo. They are intended to mount through the grille using one stud in the center of the badge. Please look for an ad in an upcoming Bugle. I occasionally receive phone calls from someone wanting advice on who to contact regarding technical information or parts availability for a particular model or year Buick that they are considering buying or restoring. As a reminder, the best source information is the list of email addresses and phone numbers of the currently available technical advisors for a particular year and/or model. These are listed inside the back paper wrapper that protects the Bugle during mailing. Another source of information is the membership roster that you should have received as a member of the BCA. The roster provides a listing of the owners of cars similar to the one you are interested in. If you still have questions, please let me know. Lastly, please do what you need to do to keep you and your family safe during these trying times.

I am sorry to have to report the death of former BCA President Kevin Kinney of Maplewood, Minnesota on December 19, 2021. He passed from a combination of the COVID virus and other underlying health issues. Kevin was the owner of several Rivieras and was an authority on their restoration and judging, particularly the later models. He also owned a 1941 Limited model 90L and a 1972 Estate Wagon. He served as BCA President from 2013-2014, and was currently serving as BCA’s Chief Judge. Kevin was involved in all aspects of the Buick Club: Judging; administration; technical advice and helping other Buick owners find parts and cars. Kevin was only 62 years old.

BCA Board of Directors Upcoming Elections By Pete Phillips, BCA #7338, Bugle Editor

In April the members of the Buick Club will elect three people to the club's Board of Directors. A ballot and election write-ups will be printed in that month's magazine. Any current member may run for the Board, but you need to be able to communicate by e-mail because most of the Board's communications are done that way, and you need to have some familiarity with and attend a BCA national meet because some of the Board's decisions concern the national meet and there is a face-to-face Board meeting each year at the national meet. Each candidate is asked to address the five questions at right in their write-ups. Election write-ups need to be one page or less, please. One page in the Buick Bugle is approximately 600-650 words. If your write-up is longer than that, I will ask you to cut it back, because almost no one wants to see half of the magazine taken up by BCA politics and elections. The deadline for submitting candidates' write-ups and a photo of yourself (shoulders and up, please) is February 15, 2022. My e-mail address is pphillips922@gmail.com or you can send it to PO Box 1247, Leonard, TX 75452.

8

Here are the questions: 1.

2.

3. 4. 5.

Please describe any current or previous positions of responsibility you have held with a BCA chapter, division, region, or other car club. Have you ever attended and participated in a BCA national meet? Many of the Board's decisions have to do with national meet policies and procedures. BCA Board discussions and votes often occur via e-mail. Are you available on a daily—and sometimes several times daily— basis to check and respond to e-mails? What are your goals for the BCA and how do you plan to help attain them? Explain any prior experience you may have that relates to the duties of the four club officers elected each year (President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer), and list any special talents you could bring to the Board.

car and fell in love with the color combination of its exterior. In the winter months the Buick is stored in a rental unit. Last week, three of the individual units were broken into. Apparently the thieves knew that one of these three units was rented by a local Snap-On dealer but weren’t sure which one it was. I was informed by the owner of the units that my padlock had been cut off but my car was unharmed.

I have owned my 1955 76R Roadmaster for over 30 years, approximately the amount of time I have enjoyed being in the BCA. My Buick is a 62,000 mile unrestored original, retaining the original paint, interior and chrome. The engine and its components have been rebuilt or replaced to ensure dependability on the road. Like so many of our members and car lovers I remember the first time I saw the

BUICK BUGLE ● February 2022

Unfortunately, when I went out to check on my Buick I discovered they had found my hidden ignition key and tried to start the Roadmaster. Thank God the thieves were too young or stupid to realize how to start a ‘55 with the gas pedal. I am sad to say they took the original ignition key and the brass BCA key fob, you used to get you when you joined the club. Does anyone happen to have one of these fobs I could buy? As much as I hate thieves I guess I should be thankful they didn’t steal my beloved Buick or $20,000.00 worth of Snap-On tools. They did make me realize there are some advantages to “being born quite a while back”.♦ clboylan@mchsi.com Above; Craig Boylan's 1955 Roadmaster, model 76-R.

The author’s 1937 Buick at the World War Two Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Article and photos by Matthew Pisarcik, BCA #46770, Brush Valley, Pennsylvania

Editor's note: Although this article was written a few years ago, it is timely to print it now, given the recent death of Senator Robert Dole of Kansas, who died at the age of 98 in December. I had the opportunity to display my 1937 Buick in front of the World War II memorial in Washington, D.C. in September of 2017. It was placed there for display as part of the Honor Flight arrivals at the memorial. What a grand time it was! Seeing all the veterans from World War II and Korea getting off the buses is something I will never forget. The first thing the veterans encountered, in front of the memorial, was the Buick. I must say

10

that the ole' girl got a lot of attention. I left the car open to whoever wanted to sit in the car and take photos. Many of the veterans took turns sitting behind the wheel while relatives took pictures. Many of the veterans relayed stories about their first driver's test in cars similar to this one. The smiles on their faces were wonderful to see. There were several WWII re-enactors in uniform that day. Their comments were, "She looks better than some of the old trucks and jeeps that we've used in past events." My daughter Danette worked as a park ranger at the National Mall. She told me that there was a special person to be on hand that

day to greet the veterans. At 9 a.m. sharp, an old Continental car pulled up along the entrance street. There was no fanfare, just a man with two other gentlemen with him. It was Senator Bob Dole. He appeared to be a little frail, but I could tell he was glad to be there. For the next five to six hours, he greeted as many veterans as he could at the entrance of the memorial. During the slower times, I went over and introduced myself. He reached out his good arm and we shook hands. He was

quite humorous and easy to talk to. He was really a common individual. He asked if I was the owner of the Buick and from there on, our conversation consisted of cars and times gone past. I was able to get photos of him beside the Buick. I was told by his bodyguard, if I would send the photos to the Senator, he would sign the photos and send them back. Over the next few years, I was able to correspond with Senator Dole. I would send holiday and birthday greetings. The birthday was very easy to remember. He and I share the same birth date. When I found out he was ill, my family and I sent him a get-well card. He responded back, saying that he would fight the cancer as best he could. On December 5th, 2021, Bob Dole passed away. I do not think he would mind if an article about him appeared in an antique car newsletter. I could hear him say, "I'm an antique myself". To me he was more than an antique. He was a man who loved the military, served his country in WWII and bore the marks of that conflict. He also loved his country. I will miss him very much. He is a member of the Greatest Generation. I say "is" because, even in death, that is one label he will always carry. I had the greatest honor to meet this man and it is something I will never forget. ♦ At right; Matt Pisarcik at left, with Senator Dole.

FROM STRAIGHT EIGHT TO V8 AND BACK: A Buick Family Story By Doug Bartholomew, BCA #31937, Berkeley, California

“He said it with a far -away look in his eye, as if it were something I’d have to experience myself--a rite of passage, as it were --to become a real Buick man.” Buicks must be in my blood. My father once told me there had been a whisper-quiet straight eight Buick in the family before I was born. He said it with a faraway look in his eye, as if it were something I’d have to experience myself--a rite of passage, as it were--to become a real Buick man. My first Buick memory is of the new, green, V-8-powered, 1953 Roadmaster sedan that became our family car when I was four years old. As was his habit, Dad had bought that car at the end of the model year, having stuck to the belief that it was the best time to buy a new car. The following summer we took a family vacation in the Roadmaster to Niagara Falls. I still remember Dad’s grumbling as we pulled to the side of the road so that this car-sick fiveyear-old could lean out the back window to blow lunch over the gunwale onto the berm. Needless to say, the green Buick cried out for a good scrubbing after that trip. When I turned eight, Dad bought a second, newer car, a red-and-white 1956 Special hardtop. Talk about pizzazz! The two-tone Buick was one of the hottest looking sets of wheels in our neighborhood in Euclid, Ohio, a Cleveland suburb. There was only one

BUICK BUGLE ● February 2022

problem--Dad had a thing for booze. Whenever we rode in the car with him, invariably when coming to a stop, there’d be the telltale clank of a bottle or two rolling about beneath the driver’s seat. And let’s not forget the saloon stops. On those occasions, Dad would usher me inside, bribe me with an ice-cold Coke and a handful of quarters, and set me to playing one of those ‘50s-era miniature bowling games with the heavy metal disks you slide down a heavily varnished wooden surface laced with sawdust. While I’d be trying to knock down a set of overhead plastic bowling pins, he’d be at the bar knocking down a few himself. Alas, drink and drive didn’t mix any better than now. After cracking up both cars in one-car accidents, Dad ended up riding the bus to work in downtown Cleveland. Nearly a decade later, having put the bottle behind him for good, Dad finally was able to once again indulge his passion for flashy Buicks. This time it was a new 1966 Wildcat Gran Sport, in red, no less. It being the start of my senior year in high school, he quickly set about teaching me to drive in the Wildcat Gran Sport, which some have called “the banker’s muscle car.” Armed with a learner’s permit, I got the hang of commanding the Wildcat by wheeling it around parking lots and taking a spin or two on the freeway. That November I got my first taste of driving in the snow when he let me pilot the car through a blizzard on a family trip to northern Michigan. Then came the day of my driving test, a Friday the 13 th. As luck would have it, Cleveland was having a snowstorm, with about six inches already on the ground. Thankfully Dad had mounted snow tires on the rear. Even so, the streets hadn’t been plowed. I barely managed to keep the Buick from sliding out of my lane. Somehow, I successfully negotiated the right-angle left and right turns without slewing the rear end. When we were done, the examiner, who may have been shaking as much as I was, said I’d passed with only one demerit for a right turn into lane two instead of the curb lane. The Wildcat was a great car for dates--powerful, and roomy as heck. Only once did I ratchet up the temerity at a stoplight to race some guy in a hot car, with the Wildcat Gran Sport’s 425 V-8 and posi-traction dusting the competition (my quicker-off-the-line

reflexes might have helped). Alas, my most forgettable moment with the Wildcat came at midafternoon one Sunday. A high school senior only weeks from graduation, I was upstairs in my room studying when I heard my father hollering downstairs. The Buick’s battery was done. When I’d driven the car into our one-car garage after a date the night before, I’d pulled the car so deep into the unlit space that the Buick’s front bumper almost nudged the back wall-- prohibiting me from seeing the headlights were still on. After a service call from a garage that brought a new battery, Dad was back on the road. Filling out the next branches of our Buick family tree were a 1970 silver Riviera, and three years later, a 1973 four-door Electra. Of all his Buicks, the Electra, the last car he owned, gave Dad the most trouble, including a wheel that fell off after the car was serviced by the dealer where he’d bought it. Go figure.

Fast forward to 1996. I spotted an ad in Hemmings offering a 1948 Super 56C convertible for sale about a mile from where I live in Berkeley, Calif. I called the number in the ad. The owner’s agent told me to meet him outside what had once been Reggie Jackson Chevrolet downtown. One of the buildings was an old warehouse with half a dozen dustcovered old cars inside. The only car with a cover on it was the Buick convertible. Not having driven a Buick of this vintage, I wasn’t sure what to The 1948 Super with the Golden Gate Bridge in the background. expect. Undaunted, I took the sequoia cream--the inches-longer big colored beauty for a 65 mph run on a hilly freeway, and the car ran brother to the 56C--was, well enough, except for a bit of high-seas rocking coming from the as one owner described suspension. I later learned the knee-action shocks leaked and needed replacing. convertible had spent its whole life on the West Coast, having been sold by a dealer in Puget Sound, Washington. In the 1960s the car was brought to Oakland and later serviced and garaged in Berkeley. When I bought it, it had covered about 60,000 miles. In the fall of 2000, I drove my “48 Super” to the Northwest Buick Meet in Sacramento. This was my farthest trip with the ’48. The day I drove to the state capital, the temperature was 95. Although the car didn’t overheat, as I approached Sacramento on I-80, I noticed some hesitation, a gentle bucking, which I later learned was probably due to a mild case of vapor lock. There were plenty of stunning Buicks to ogle at the show, most of them in better condition than mine. My ’48 Super is a driver with plenty of less-than-show-class blemishes. It’s a cool “20-footer” that never fails to turn heads wherever I go. Nonetheless, at one NorCal Buick Club Chapter event my car took second place in the People’s Choice category, right behind a sweet 1941 Limited.

Bob Dias, the uncle of the author’s wife Joan, in an undated photo with his 1949 Super sedan.

What’s more, this ’48 Super is mostly original, with the 3-speed on the column, 248 straight-eight, six-volt electrical, manual steering and brakes, and bias-ply wide whites. As far as repairs are concerned, I had my mechanic replace the shocks with rebuilt units I sourced from an outfit in Southern California that rebuilds knee-action shocks. I replaced the starter and put in a rebuilt unit from Bob’s Automobilia by crawling under the car--a tight fit, to be sure--and swapping it out. My mechanic replaced the top pump, cylinders and top operating switch, as well as a defective compensating valve in the brake system that caused the left front wheel to heat up. I also had half a dozen sets of maroon seat belts installed that, by virtue of matching the maroon leather upholstery, look very original. But wait-- lest you get the impression my Buick connection is confined to my immediate family, it turns out my wife’s late Uncle Bob Dias also was a Buick guy, having owned a 1949 Super sedan. In fact, among the joys of driving my ’48 Super convertible were the times I took Uncle Bob, then in his early 90s, to some of the Bay Area’s biggest car shows, with him proudly riding shotgun in the open car.

When Uncle Bob was in his early 90s, he enjoyed cruising with the author in this 1948 Buick convertible to San Francisco Bay Area car shows.

My ’48 Buick still needs some fixes and upgrades. The radio doesn’t work. The tires are old bias-ply jobs. The upholstery is going the way of Dad’s old couch. As a driver, though, the ’48 never fails to quicken my blood when I give her the gas in third and feel that straight-eight move out. I guess Dad’s prophecy was right all along--there was to be another whisper-quiet straight eight Buick in the family--it was to be my Buick all along. ♦

Queen Mary or not, I became the 56C’s new captain. I immediately joined the BCA national and local Norcal Chapter. The previous owner, an attorney in Oakland, gave me a thick folder containing service records and some ownership history. The sequoia cream

WILLIAMS PONTIAC-BUICK IN GLADEWATER, TEXAS By Pete Phillips, BCA #7338, Bugle Editor

Gladewater is a small town in eastern Texas with a population of about 6,500. In the 1920s and 1930s it was part of the East Texas oil boom. However, being located several miles off of the Interstate highway that runs between Dallas and Shreveport, its population and economy have stagnated somewhat since then. Here is a photo of Williams Pontiac-Buick in Gladewater in 1967. We see a 1967 Electra 225 two-door hardtop parked closest to the street, and other 1967 Pontiacs and Buicks closer to the building. There are two Pontiac Firebirds which were in their first year, and next to them a 1967 Buick Special four-door sedan. There's a full-sized Buick four-door sedan parked behind the Firebirds under the overhang of the building. According to the company's website (still in business, but as a Ford dealer now), J. O. Williams, Sr. opened a garage and service station in Gladewater during the oil boom in 1932. In 1936, he became a Pontiac dealer. His son, J.O. Williams, Jr., started working at the dealership in 1953, and in 1957 they picked up the Buick franchise. In 1964, they built the new building that you see here along U.S. Highway 80, which was the main highway from Dallas, Texas to Shreveport, Louisiana. J.O. Williams, Sr. died in 1974, but his sons and grandsons kept the business going. In 1991, they became a Ford dealership, and built a new, separate building for the Pontiac and Buick franchise. In 2002, they sold the Pontiac and Buick dealership, but still operate today as J.O. Williams Ford in Gladewater, Texas. ♦ Source: https://www.jowilliamsford.com/ about-our-dealership.htm J.O. Buicks Invade Muscle Car And Corvette Nationals

By Bob & Bonnie Starzyk, BCA #39653, Palos Heights, Illinois Photos by Melanie Mauser and Bob Starzyk

On November 20 and 21, 2021 Buick had its biggest turnout of cars at this show in eleven years' history. There were 27 Buicks in all. A big thank you should go out to Dr. Ajesh Parikhs who put together the invitation of 20 of the best 1970-71 GSs in the world. There were seventeen '70s and three '71s. Eighteen of those were Stage 1 and two GS 455s (unbelievable). The gathering of the 1970 models was to take place last year for the 50th anniversary of those cars, but due to Covid it was postponed. There were also four unveilings of special GSs at the show.

As you entered the atrium of the Rosemont Convention Center in Rosemont, Illinois, you were greeted by a psychedelic '70 Buick GS. Then when you entered the show, you walked up to two just finished GSXs: a '71 blue GSX and a '70 Apollo white GSX Stage 1. They were unveiled at 10: 45AM Saturday at that show. As you walked down the row of the GM “Top Dogs”, to your left and your right there were all makes and models in this class. There were two Buick coupes on the right and two Buick convertibles on the left. At 10:15 AM on Saturday there was the unveiling of a special colored 1970 Buick Stage1 convertible in Tealmist gray, code 16. As you keep walking down that row you run into the Hemi Under Glass display. Then to your right there was a display of fourteen Buick GSs. There were twelve 1970s and two 1971s and not one car there was of the same color. An unveiling of a Saturn Yellow GSX Stage 1 took place Saturday at 9:45AM. Most of the cars in this area were judged by members of the Buick GS Club of America who also do the judging at the national show in May (this judging is very strict, 1000 points). Then as you keep walking through the sea of muscle cars and Corvettes (400+ cars) you would come across a highly customized 1967 Buick GS400. Going back some more, you would come across a stunning 1965 Rivera Gran Sport. Further down as you keep on walking you see a 1971 Stage 2, and a 1972 Stage 1 set up for racing. About that point you run into the Buick Club of America's booth.

Article and photos by Pete Phillips, Bugle Editor, BCA #7338

By the time you read this, these old Buicks may be gone, but it’s a good story anyway. Scott Farrington is a brand new member of the BCA, your Editor having recently recruited him. He lives in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. About two years ago he learned of some old Buicks sitting out in the woods near Cedar Rapids, deteriorating but available in an estate sale. They all were from the 1940s and had been sitting there since the 1970s-1980s. In addition to Roadmaster and Super four-door sedans, there was a 1949 Roadmaster two-door hardtop and a 1949 Roadmaster two-door fastback sedanet. The cars had all belonged to one man in Swisher, Iowa who owned a nursery, loved old Buicks, and was apparently a functioning alcoholic. He bought the cars

in the early 1970s for as little as $5 apiece and proceeded to drive them. There is a receipt for the ‘49 Roadmaster hardtop for $5, dated October 9, 1972 (it was a parts car at that time, the previous owner having stopped driving it in 1956). Trips to the liquor store apparently were frequent, and when nursery owner wrecked one of the cars, he would park it out in the woods and get another one to drive. He passed away several years ago and his wife wanted $2,000 per car for the ones left in the woods to rot. Scott Farrington heard about it and eventually got the price down to a more realistic $100 per car, but that’s when the work began. He had to dig each one out of the forest floor, load them with a forklift, and truck them to an empty parking lot next to his business in Cedar Rapids. The cars consisted of a 1949 Roadmaster twodoor hardtop, 1949 Roadmaster two-door Sedanet or fastback, 1948 Roadmaster four-door sedan, 1949 Super four-door sedan, 1948 Super four-door sedan, a pair of 1947 Super four-door sedans, a 1947 Super hearse by Flxible, and a 1941 Special model 47 four-door sedan. None of the cars ran, most if not all of their glass windows were missing, and all had plenty of Iowa rust from salty roads and sitting on the forest floor for decades.

BUICK BUGLE ● February 2022

Farrington posted his find on a Buick Facebook internet site and received inquiries for parts from all over the world. After removing and selling parts from the cars, he served notice that it was time to remove the cars from the parking lot and send them to a salvage yard, probably to be crushed, unless anyone wanted to buy one for $400 or $500. That’s when this Editor jumped into action, drove to Iowa, and hauled the ‘49 Roadmaster Sedanet home to be parted out instead of being crushed.

The extreme rust made parts removal very difficult and items that we thought were savable were either broken when trying to remove nuts and bolts, or the nuts and bolts were so deteriorated that no tool could touch them. We did manage to save a few items, and the remains of the car will go to an old car salvage yard in north central Texas that does not crush its vehicles. AND, we managed to recruit a new member and Buick fan to the BCA. Farrington owns a 1957 Special Estate Wagon and a 1947 Super convertible. ♦

The Buicks of 1922 By Pete Phillips, BCA #7338, Bugle Editor

The Buicks from 1922 are now 100 years old. There were fourcylinder models and six-cylinder models. The four-cylinder models were reappearing in Buick’s line-up after a three-year hiatus during which only six-cylinder Buicks were made. The reappearance of the four-cylinder line made new Buicks more affordable to a larger group of buyers, and Buick’s production numbers increased to 123,152 (including the fours and the sixes together). This was up from 82,930 cars the previous year. 1921 had been a recession year for the economy, which is probably why the four-cylinder line of Buicks was brought back.

came on either a 118-inch wheelbase or a 124-inch wheelbase. The four-cylinder cars’ drivetrain was the same as the larger 1922 Buicks, with a multi-disc clutch, three-speed floor shift, enclosed driveshaft, and mechanical brakes on the rear wheels only. Unlike the Model T Ford, the four-cylinder Buicks had three forward speeds instead of two; cooling water was circulated by a water pump rather than the Ford’s thermo-siphon system; and engine oil lubrication was by a combination of splash and pressure-driven circulation. THE 118” WHEELBASE SIXES

Cut-away view of the 1922 six-cylinder engine.

Buick’s most popular cars in 1922 were the six-cylinder, 118-inch wheelbase models. The engine was the tried and proven 224-cubicinch overhead valve six—which was first produced in 1916. It was rated at 27 horsepower. Compared to the year before, the 1922 radiators were a bit narrower and taller, and the car’s cowl was a couple of inches taller to give more of a straight line from the top center of the hood to the cowl. The windshield on the open cars was inclined slightly to the rear, while the closed cars had an upright windshield.

The four-cylinder engine of 1922 was a new design, with overhead valves and 170 cubic inches. It was rated at 18 horsepower, so it is no powerhouse, but neither was the Ford Model T. The fourcylinder Buicks had their own 109-inch wheelbase, while the sixes

As with the four-cylinder cars, the sixes had a three-speed, floorshifted transmission using the reverse “H” pattern, a multi-disc clutch, enclosed driveshaft, and mechanical brakes on the rear wheels only. The starter/generator is a combination unit by Delco.

Like the 118” wheelbase cars, the 124” wheelbase cars used the 224 cubic-inch six. The four-passenger coupe was the most popular model of this group. The Sport Roadster, model 54, was not introduced until January of 1922. It was a very special car, with maroon paint, red wool carpeting, red Spanish leather upholstery, and wire wheels. In May of 1922, the seven-passenger Sport Touring was introduced, also with maroon paint, red leather upholstery, and wire wheels. Due to its late production date, only 900 were built and sold.

BUICK TRUCKS After a three-year absence, Buick brought back its truck model in late 1922, called the SD-4. The engine was a four-cylinder. Only 403 were built, at prices ranging from $945 to $980, depending on whether the bed of the truck was open or enclosed. The cab was enclosed on all models, according to photos in the book, Seventy Years of Buick by George Dammann. WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING ONE The car needs to be complete, because body parts are just about unobtainable. The 224 engine was made for several years, so parts for them are a little easier to find, but not plentiful. Since the bodies

are “composite”, that means they are made from a combination of wood framing, wood floors, and sheet metal tacked over the framework. So, unless you have good carpentry skills or know a good carpenter, beware of the condition of the wood. On the sixcylinder engines, the water distribution tube (sometimes called the water return tube) on top of the engine is often rusted out, but I have seen replacements at Pre-War swap meets such as the one at Hershey, Pennsylvania and the one at Chickasha, Oklahoma. WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN JUDGING ONE Engines should be painted an olive-brown or olive-green color. However, the valve cover and other sheet metal parts should be black (fan, spark plug cover, water return tube). Except for the model 54 and model 55, open cars should have an oval rear window. The model 54 and model 55 open cars should have a rectangular rear window. All bolt-on or separate body parts should be painted black. These include running boards, splash pans, fenders, gas tanks, headlight shells, spare tire carrier, front license bar, and windshield frame. This information is directly

from the BCA Judging Handbook. Only a few paint colors for the body were offered, depending on the model. Without running through each model, suffice it to say that correct body colors are black, Brewster green, maroon, Buick blue, or Premier gray. Tire size for the four-cylinder cars is 31 by 4 inches. Tire size for the smaller six-cylinder cars is 33 by 4 inches, and for the larger sixcylinder cars, 34 by 4.5 inches. ♦

South Central Region Fall Meet Article and photos by Pete Phillips, BCA #7338, Bugle Editor

On Saturday, November 13, 2021, the Alamo Chapter hosted the annual South Central Region Fall Meet in Burnet, Texas which is a small town in central Texas northwest of Austin. The three chapters of the BCA in Texas were invited, but only five Buicks showed up. Some of the poor turnout was due to the high hotel price (approximately $200/night with taxes) and there was no advance publicity in the Bugle. Nevertheless, the mild, clear, autumn weather was perfect and the location at the Burnet Municipal Airport provided several

attractions, including a small museum run by the Highland Lakes Chapter of the Commemorative Air Force and some of their historic aircraft housed at the airport. While members displayed their Buicks in front of the aircraft hangar, a World War II-era Navy training plane made touch-and-go landings on the runway a few hundred feet away. The sound of that old Pratt & Whitney piston engine and its screaming propeller made it seem like a World War II dogfight was about to happen in the sky above. 2021 Motor Muster Welcome Back and a Rebuild Article and photos by Mitch Carr, BCA #47405, Lake Orion, Michigan

After 2020, the lost year, the 2021 Motor Muster on the grounds of Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Michigan was able to take place once more. Motor Muster is a twoday affair over Father’s Day weekend, which includes cars of the 1930s-70s, motorcycles, and bicycles. Vehicles are placed around the historic buildings of the village, making it one of Detroit’s largest shows. As with just about everything else due to Covid in 2020, Motor Muster was cancelled. It’s easy to stop a car show, but restarting it and regaining the momentum is another matter. still nervous about Covid, would they show up? Understandably, the numbers were shy of 2019, but let’s just say that Buicks were well represented. One of those Buicks made the trip from Wisconsin. There were three Buicks that I found interesting. Two of them I talked to the owners, who were both BCA members, while the third car was just sitting by itself. James Nagel of Fraser, Michigan is the third owner of his Dover White 1955 Super two-door hardtop and has owned it for 35 years. Initially based on the east coast, this Super was built in New Jersey and 1955 Super two-door Riviera - James Nagel – Fraser, MI.

The interior and white top paint are original, but the red body is a respray and 75% of the chrome has been redone. JUDGING OF MODIFIED BUICKS By Pete Phillips, BCA #7338, Bugle Editor Printed here are the introduction to the BCA's modified judging policy and the actual form that is used for judging of these cars at a Buick Club national meet. The more modified your car is, the better its chances are at receiving a Modified Class judging award. As explained below, there are four sub-classes for modified

cars in the Modified judging class. The point is this: If your Buick has too many modifications to receive an award in the 400point judging classes, then the Modified Class may be the way to go. Thanks to Bob Starzyk for supplying the information you see here. ♦

MODIFIED JUDGING CLASS INSTRUCTIONS Welcome to the 2022 B.C.A. National Meet in Lisle, Illinois Thank you for entering your modified Buick in our event. In order to help the organizers avoid problems on the day of the meet we need your help. First of all, if your modified Buick has only minor changes, you might be better off in the 400-point system if awards are important to you. In that system deductions are made for incorrect items on the Buick. If you are unsure, please contact me, Bob Starzyk at 708-334-4848 or email 56Buick@att.net and I will be happy to help you decide. In order to receive an award at Buick National Meets, you must be a paid-up member of the B.C.A. Members for a day are not eligible for trophies. You have received a judging form for your Buick in this envelope. Before you have your car judged you MUST complete certain areas of the form. We need to know what class you have selected to be judged in. You can then select a class, if you did not select the class on the registration form. You have to CIRCLE the areas on the form indicating the changes you have made to your Buick. These are the only areas on your Buick that the judges will be looking at and awarding points based on workmanship, difficulty, cleanliness, and originality. There is an automatic 50 point deduction for a nonBuick engine in a pre-1977 Buick. In a post 1977 modified Buick the engine must have been available in a Buick body. The 3.8 V6 is a Buick engine and can be used in any year. This judging form is to be turned in at the registration desk before Friday at 5:00 PM. The Modified Division of the Buick Club of America uses judges who volunteer to judge modified Buicks. You do not have to be a member of the Modified Division to have your Buick judged; however, there will be a Modified Division meeting at the meet and all modified Buick owners are welcome, membership forms will be available at the

38

meeting. The meeting will include a judging seminar for modified. Check the meet schedule for time and location. To help you decide what modified class your Buick should be in, here are some guidelines. Only Buick bodied cars are eligible to be judged. Driven: If your Buick is 25 year s old or older and is basically as it left the factory, but you have changed to 12 volts, installed an alternator, radial tires, added a twin carb set up, installed different wheels, installed dual exhaust, changed the sound system, then you should be in Modified Driven Class, and you will receive a grille plaque if you qualify. This class will be judged on a separate form. NO REPOWERING WITH LATER ENGINES IS PERMITTED IN THE DRIVEN CLASS, OR INTERIOR UPGRADES (upholstery and carpet changes). Mild: If you have done minor changes to your Buick, paint, nosing and decking, removal of door handles, minor body changes, minor chrome changes, mild interior modifications, engine upgrades, added disc brakes, etc. you should be in Mild. No re-powering with newer engines or front clip installations. Minimum 200 pts. Resto-rod: If your Buick has been r e-powered with a later engine, has a late model chassis or front clip, with modern ride but still looks stock at first glance, then you belong in Resto-rod. This class would include Buicks from the 1920's, 1930's, 1940’s, 1950's, 1960's and 1970's. These Buicks may have upgraded brakes and steering and interiors but NO MAJOR BODY CHANGES. Radical: If your Buick has had major body changes, chopped, channeled, re-powered, new chassis, major interior changes, and is only barely recognizable as a Buick, then you belong in Radical. Enjoy the meet and thanks for coming.
