Downtown Brentwood is voted the place to be — especially on weekends

It’s no surprise Downtown Brentwood, with its shops, restaurants, events, theater and park, brought home the gold medal in this category. “In the summer months, kids cool off at the splash pads, in the library or at one of the adorable downtown kid-focused play spaces and shops,” said Amy Tilley, executive director of the Downtown Brentwood Coalition. “In the winter, children are delighted to get glorious hot cocoa from Sip and Scoop and visit Brentwood on Ice to do some ice skating. It’s festive year-round, and truly has something for everyone.”

Located downtown is the silver medal winner, the Brentwood Library. Its new home opened in 2018 with space for books, study rooms, a café and an outdoor seating area.”

Brentwood is a growing community with a busy events calendar to match. Three of the most popular activities brought home medals: The Makers Boulevard won the gold medal, the Farmers Market won the silver medal, and the city’s Concerts in the Park won the bronze medal.

The Makers Boulevard occurs the third Saturday of each month, and is designed to bring local creators and the community together. “I think it has served as a platform for other local businesses to showcase their talents, whether it’s direct partners of the Makers Boulevard, or featured guests who come out and showcase their talents and what they can bring to the community,” said founder Katie Rogina.

Right next to the Makers Boulevard –but open every Saturday – is the Brentwood Farmers Market. If they aren’t strolling downtown in the morning to shop for produce or locally made goods, Brentwood residents want to be at City Park enjoying a concert. Friday nights during the summer, the City of Brentwood has a lineup of highquality entertainment for a relaxed, familyfriendly atmosphere. Music lovers can picnic and enjoy a night of free music and dancing.

The City of Brentwood launched its $64,000 Better in Brentwood marketing effort in 2016 to highlight why it is such an amazing place to live, work, play and raise a family. Other well-spent city dollars are going to the Brentwood Library, which

has free programs and abundant resources for the community to take advantage of for 52 hours each week. Free programs at the Brentwood Library include story times, veterans’ services, adult literacy programs, free access to major newspapers and other publications and access to the county’s collection of 1.3 million books.

Proud nonprofits serve Brentwood

When our readers cast their votes for Best Nonprofit in the Best of Brentwood Poll, they awarded a gold medal to the Rotary Club of Brentwood, a silver medal to the Brentwood Lions Club and a bronze medal to Soroptimist International of the Delta.

Founded in 1949, the Rotary Club of Brentwood has 73 years of local service to its credit. Club president Dan Torres said the recognition was appreciated. “It’s always nice to be recognized,” Torres said. “With our motto of ‘service above self,’ we definitely put in the time and effort and resources we do because we just want to help, but we are appreciative of the community for bringing recognition to further support our work. This is a testament not only to our current members but also the past members who have served the club over the past 70 years.”’

The club meets weekly to lay out its plans for community service locally and abroad. In East County, they fundraise to benefit youth as well as veterans and other nonprofits working with those in need. Internationally, the club focuses its efforts on building homes and infrastructure and the global fight to eradicate polio.

As part of its local work this summer, Rotary members hosted a back-to-school event, providing school clothes and supplies to kids in need. They also provided dictionaries for every third grader in the

Brentwood and Knightsen school districts, as well as local private schools.

The Brentwood Lions Club said it is proud to receive the silver medal from Brentwood residents. The Brentwood chapter of this international organization is 93 years old and works to serve the community by feeding the hungry, fighting childhood cancer, protecting the environment, supporting local schools, scouting groups and other community groups. They sponsor other local nonprofits and award thousands of dollars in scholarships each year.

“We are one of the largest clubs and one of the oldest clubs in the state,” said Lions Club Treasurer Laura Avila. “We are very active, and we just got involved in packaging food to be distributed to various farm workers.”

Laura Avila’s husband, Phil Avila, is president of the club. The couple said being involved in the Brentwood community and supporting youth, seniors, veterans and everyone in between, has been fulfilling.

Holding up their bronze medal is the Soroptimist International of the Delta, a global volunteer organization that provides women and girls with access to the education and training they need to achieve economic empowerment.

“The name Soroptimist means ‘best

for women,’ and that is what our service organization strives to achieve,” said President Sue Pretzer. “We like to say we are women at our best working to help other women be their best. We do that by providing scholarships and awards to women and girls so that they can continue their educational dreams to reach their full potential.”

The group was founded in 1984 and uses its funds to support local projects including Village Resource Center, One Day at a Time, Shepherd’s Gate and Pillars of Hope. The club also has four scholarship programs for girls and women from eighth grade up to adult education. The group hosts three main fundraisers each year, and last year raised $18,000.

“We are hard working women,” Pretzer said. “There are about 28 of us in our club and we are always looking for women who want to give back to the community … we are so proud to be recognized for this.”

The company has long been known for their dedication to giving back to the community through efforts such as the Lennox Feel the Love program, their donations to several charities such as the Semper Fi Fund and the National Breast Cancer Foundation, and their annual holiday partnership with the Food Bank of Contra Costa & Solano distributing Thanksgiving turkeys to those in need.

The “Feel The Love” Program is a community program by Lennox, a company

that produces climate control systems such as heaters and air conditioners. Perfect Star is a partner of the program, accepting nominations from residents to select recipients for new heating systems just in time for colder weather. Recipients are selected based on criteria such as community service, financial challenges and potential disability. But, beyond that, recipients are always those who put others first, according to Lennox’s website. Past nominees have included veterans, teachers and firefighters.

“Last year, Perfect Star selected and donated a new HVAC system to a home in Oakley that cares for medically fragile and autistic children,” according to their website. “The entire Perfect Star Team — from service, install and office — came out and donated their time and energy to make this the best event ever for all of the children and graduates of the home who were on hand during the install.”

Round Valley Regional Preserve and Marsh Creek Regional Trail are two ways Brentwood has been able to stay outside and active over the past two years. While many parks shut down during the pandemic, the East Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD) –which operates both Round Valley and the Marsh Creek Trail – was able to adjust its practices and remain open to the public.

“People appreciated that we were able to be available,” said Colin Coffey, EBRPD board president. “We were short-staffed, but we are a large park operator with our own police force, so we were able to keep the parks open and became the only outdoor game in town during the pandemic.”

Round Valley is known for its rolling hills and vast meadows. Hikers can appreciate local flora and fauna while taking in the views from the higher points of the park. Marsh Creek Trail is a paved path running 6.5 miles from Brentwood to Big Break Regional Shore Line in Oakley.

Coffey said the recognition was wonderful and affirmed the work he and the whole district do for the community. One

project underway now is the extension of the Marsh Creek Trail from Concord Avenue in Brentwood to Marsh Creek State Park, where the home of John Marsh sits. Once completed, Coffey said a further extension to Round Valley will hopefully be funded for construction.

EBRP serves 2.8 million residents in Contra Costa and Alameda counties through 73 parks with 125,000 acres of land, and 1,250 miles of trails.

Families and students everywhere were relieved when campuses reopened for classes. Excitement rose even higher when masks were tossed aside earlier this year and declared optional. Both distance learning and masks were points of contention in the local school districts, with parents battling school boards and each other from both sides of the issues. Brentwood Union School District Superintendent Dana Eaton said it’s good to get back to normal.

“We are thrilled to be back to operating a pretty traditional school year,” Eaton said. “Our staff are working so hard to make our schools

welcoming and supportive of all students. I think these past few years have really driven home how critical the work is that teachers and support staff do every day, not only for our students, but for our community as a whole.”
