Vorwort Kompositionsanlass Am 25. Juli 1788 trug Mozart die Symphonie g-moll KV 550 in sein eigenhändiges Werkverzeichnis als vollendet ein.1 Zuvor war er an den Alsergrund Nr. 135 in das Haus zu den drei Sternen (heute IX. Bezirk, Währinger Str. 26) umgezogen.2 Am neuen, dezentralen Quartier lobte Mozart, er könne hier, „da ich den vielen besuchen nicht ausgesezt bin, mit mehrerer Musse arbeiten“.3 Außerdem sei es im „frühJahr, Sommer, und Herbst, angenehmer – da ich auch einen garten habe.“4 Über den Kompositionsanlass sind keinerlei gesicherte Informationen erhalten. Ein Brief, in dem Mozart „Academien im Casino“ erwähnt, wurde in der Brief-Gesamtausgabe von Bauer und Deutsch in den Juni 1788 eingeordnet.5 Diese nicht weiter bezeugten Akademien wurden als Kompositionsanlass für die Symphonien KV 543, 550 und 551 in Betracht gezogen.6 Allerdings ist dieser Brief nicht im Autograph erhalten und in der überlieferten Form undatiert. Die Datierung des Briefs auf Juni 1788 ist mittlerweile überzeugend widerlegt worden.7 Es bleibt deshalb Spekulation, ob Mozart die Symphonie KV 550 für eine der oben erwähnten Akademien komponiert hat.

Eine Aufführung der Großen g-moll-Symphonie in Anwesenheit Mozarts erwähnt der Mozart-Zeit­ genosse Johann Wenzel (1762–1831). In einem Brief aus dem Jahre 1802 schreibt er, dass Mozart, „als Er sie [die g-moll-Symphonie] bei Baron Wanswiten hat produciren lassen, [...] wärend der production aus dem Zimmer sich hat entfernen müssen, wie man Sie unrichtig aufgeführt hat“.8 Wenzel war bei dieser Aufführung jedoch nicht selbst anwesend, sondern hat über sie nur aus Mozarts Mund gehört („im Wien habe ich selbst es von verstorbenem Mozart gehört“). Leider sind Ort und Datum der Aufführung nicht bekannt. War es die Erstaufführung?9 Der von Wenzel erwähnte Baron Gottfried Bernhard van Swieten („Wanswiten“) (1733–1803) war treuer Subskribent von Mozarts Akademien und veranstaltete über Jahre hinweg sonntägliche Matinéen, an denen auch Mozart mindestens im Jahre 1782 regelmäßig teilnahm.10 Van Swieten gründete auch die Gesellschaft der Associierten Cavaliere, die aus musikinteressierten und spendenfreudigen Aristokraten bestand. Ihre Konzerte fanden in privatem Rahmen in den Palais der Adeligen statt.11 Für diese Konzerte der Gesellschaft der Associierten Cavaliere bearbeitete Mozart ab November 1788 Händels Acis und Galathea KV 566, den Messias KV 572, das Alexanderfest KV 591 und die Caecilien-Ode KV 592. Van Swieten ist in die Musikgeschichte als derjenige eingegangen, der in Wien das Interesse an Bach und Händel wiedererweckt hat, doch wird diese einseitige Sichtweise seiner Rolle im Musikleben Wiens nicht gerecht.12 Er hatte beispielsweise bei Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach die 1773 komponierten sechs Symphonien H. 657–662 (= Wq. 182) in Auftrag gegeben. Auf van Swietens Wunsch hin sollte Bach sich bei der Komposition „ganz gehen“ lassen, „ohne auf die Schwierigkeiten Rücksicht zu nehmen, die daraus für die Ausübung nothwendig entstehen mussten.“13 Wurden die drei Symphonien KV 543, 550 und 551 von van Swieten in Auftrag gegeben und sind sie ein weiteres Zeugnis seiner Förderung neuer Musik?

Quellen Die autographe Partitur der g-moll-Symphonie befindet sich heute im Besitz der Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Wien. Sie überliefert das Werk in der 1. Fassung (ohne Klarinetten). Daneben finden sich zwei autographe Beilagen zur Partitur. Die eine enthält eine geänderte Instrumentation für das Andante T. 29–32 und 100–103 (zur 1. Fassung, also ohne Klarinetten). Sie wird im Weiteren als Andante-Beilage bezeichnet. Die andere Beilage ist eine Bläser­partitur mit Oboen- und Klarinettenstimmen für die 2. Fassung (= Klarinetten-Beilage).

Neben der autographen Partitur ist noch ein Stimmensatz aus der Sammlung Lannoy im Besitz des Landeskonservatoriums in Graz von Interesse. Zwar bildet dieser Stimmensatz äußerlich in Bezug auf Handschrift und Papier sowie inhaltlich in Bezug auf Korrektheit und Fassungen/Varianten eine sehr

hetero­gene Einheit, doch finden sich zumindest in den Stimmen von Oboe I und II (2. Fassung) sowie Violine II vereinzelt Eintragungen von Mozarts Hand.14 Diese Eintragungen bringen allerdings für den Notentext keinerlei bedeutende neue Erkenntnisse. Die Stimmen dürfen aber als indirekter Nachweis für die Aufführung der 2. Fassung gelten, hätte Mozart doch sicherlich nicht die teure Kopiatur der 2. Fassung der Symphonie nur für seinen Notenschrank vorgenommen.

Varianten im Andante – die Dopplung von acht Takten In der autographen Hauptpartitur findet sich in den Takten 29 und 100 jeweils ein Doppelstrich und ein vide-Hinweis, die auf die Andante-Beilage verweisen (vgl. die diplomatische Wiedergabe der fraglichen Takte im Anhang der vor­liegenden Ausgabe S. 62–65). Diese Notation und die Tatsache, dass in der Haupt­ partitur die folgenden Takte 29–32 bzw. 100–103 von Mozart nicht ungültig gemacht wurden, suggeriert, dass hier der Text der Andante-Beilage eingefügt (und nicht ersetzt) werden solle. Genährt wird diese Annahme auch durch den weiten Abstand des Doppelstriches in T. 100, der ebenfalls einen Einschub andeuten könnte. Das Problem der eingeschobenen Takte ist übrigens ganz an die 1. Fassung (ohne Klarinetten) gebunden, denn in der Andante-Beilage sind auch die pausierenden Stimmen (Ob. II, Fg. II, Cor. I/II) notiert und keine Klarinetten vorgesehen.

In fast allen historischen Quellen und Bearbeitungen vor der Alten Mozart-Gesamtausgabe (1882) ist dementsprechend die Andante-Beilage in den Noten­text eingeschoben und der Satz damit um zweimal vier Takte erweitert worden. Ohne diese Hintergründe zu kennen, thematisiert Robert Schumann 1841 die eigenartige Dopplung des musikalischen Materials in der Breitkopf-Partitur von 1828 und empfiehlt, die doppelten Takte – nämlich die der Andante-Beilage – aus musikalischen Gründen zu streichen.15 Rund 150 Jahre später widmet sich Cliff Eisen erneut dieser Problematik. Er weist darauf hin, dass in der Violine-II-Stimme aus der Sammlung Lannoy, die eine autographe Eintragung Mozarts enthält, der Text der Andante-Beilage nicht vor dem Text der Hauptpartitur (T. 29–32 und 100–103) eingeschoben wurde, sondern ihn durch nachträgliche Korrektur ersetzt.16 Da diese Korrektur vom selben Kopisten stammt wie die Stimme, ist es durchaus naheliegend anzunehmen, dass die Korrektur zeitnah und auf Mozarts Veranlassung erfolgte. Dieser Befund bestätigt Schumanns Beobachtung, dass in den alten Ausgaben im Andante zweimal vier Takte überzählig sind. Der erwähnten Violinstimme nach zu urteilen, sind allerdings die Takte 29–32 und 100–103 der Hauptpartitur zu streichen und durch die entsprechenden Takte der Andante-Beilage zu ersetzen.

Die Klarinetten-Beilage wiederum enthält erwartungsgemäß keine Taktdopplung. Darüber hinaus kann die Andante-Beilage nicht einfach um den Text der Klarinetten-Beilage ergänzt werden, weil nicht nur die ausdruckvolle Vorhaltbildung Takt 103 (as1–ges1) fehlen würde, sondern auch die logische Struktur der Instrumentation – nämlich die einheitliche Zuweisung der 32stel-Seufzer entweder zu den Bläsern (Hauptpartitur/Klarinetten-Beilage) oder zu den Streichern (Andante-Beilage) – aufgebrochen würde: bei Kom­ bination von Andante- und Klarinetten-Beilage wären die 32stel-Seufzer sowohl in Streichern, als auch in der Klarinette.

Werkgenese Eisens Befund wird durch die Analyse der Notation im Autograph bestätigt. Die autographe Notation verrät aber noch einiges mehr zur Werkgenese. Wie in der Hauptpartitur zu sehen ist, hat Mozart die Instrumentation im Andante in den Takten 27f. und 98f. nachträglich geändert. Der Text von Oboe I wurde der Flöte zugewiesen. Der Notation nach zu urteilen, muss diese Veränderung in Zusammenhang mit der Andante-Beilage stehen. Wie beispielsweise aus dem Autograph des Hornkonzerts KV 412 zu ersehen ist, zeigt Mozart sorgfältig sowohl den Anfang als auch das Ende des Systemtauschs an. Im Andante der g-moll-Symphonie fehlt ein Hinweis am Ende. Klar ist aber auch, dass die 32stel-Seufzer in Takt 29 nicht von der Oboe zu spielen sind, weil sie den üblichen Ambitus der klassischen Oboe (c1–d3) überschreiten.

Ähnlich verhält es sich mit den 32stel-Seufzern in Takt 102. Mozart könnte zweimal vergessen haben, das Ende des Systemtausches anzuzeigen. Wahrscheinlicher ist es aber, dass der Systemtausch durch den Doppelstrich, der auf die Andante-Beilage hinweist, formal beendet wird. Der Systemtausch ist also an den Doppelstrich und damit an die Andante-Beilage gekoppelt.

Ob Mozart den Systemtausch im selben Zuge mit der Komposition der Andante-Beilage vornahm oder erst später, bleibt vorerst unklar. Sowohl hinter dem Systemtausch als auch hinter der Andante-Beilage verbirgt sich aber unzweifelhaft dieselbe Absicht, nämlich die Vereinfachung vor allem der Oboenstimme.

Dies könnte ein Indiz dafür sein, dass Andante-Beilage und Systemtausch zeitlich zusammen erfolgten.

Nun zur chronologischen Einordnung der Klarinetten-Beilage: Die Hauptpartitur enthält im Andante mehrere Hinweise auf die 2. Fassung (mit Klarinetten), nämlich in Takt 27 „hat jetzt die Clarinette“, Takt 28, nach Seitenumbruch erneut „Clarinette“ und T. 98 „Clarinetto“. Diese Eintragungen wurden in der im Anhang abgedruckten diplomatischen Wiedergabe der Hauptpartitur (S. 62f.) in Klammern gesetzt, weil sie entgegen der von Robbins Landon und Otto Biba vertretenen Meinung wahrscheinlich nicht von Mozarts Hand sind.17 Vermutlich stammen sie aus der Feder Johann Andrés, der im Besitz dieses Autographs war und von dem wohl, mit dem Kürzel „ A.“ gezeichnet, noch weitere Fremdeintragungen im Autograph herrühren.18 Ignoriert man all die mutmaßlichen Fremdeintragungen, ergibt sich eine logische Chronologie von Klarinetten-Beilage und Systemtausch in den Takten 27f. und 98f.: Mozart schrieb zuerst die KlarinettenBeilage, und erst später tauschte er die Notensysteme. Wenn er die Klarinetten-Beilage nach dem System­ tausch geschrieben hätte, müssten Flöte und Klarinette I an diesen offen instrumentierten Stellen unisono spielen. Ein Unisono von Flöte und Klarinette I ist hier aber unwahrscheinlich, weil Mozart in der gesamten 2. Fassung der Symphonie Flöte und Klarinette nur an vereinzelten Stellen und dort nur im Tutti unisono spielen lässt (z. B. Andante, T. 105).19 Um das offene Unisono von Flöte und Klarinette zu vermeiden, hätte Mozart es durch eine ähnliche Anmerkung, wie sie von fremder Hand im Autograph steht, selbst sichergestellt. Die Klarinetten-Beilage bezieht sich also auf den ursprünglichen Zustand der Instrumentation mit Oboe in den Takten 27f./98f. Da auch die beiden Oboenstimmen in der Klarinetten-Beilage notiert sind (und dort pausieren), konnte es keine Missverständnisse geben.

Weil Mozart sicherlich kein Unisono von Flöte und Klarinette in T. 27f./98f. beabsichtigt hat, ist der System­tausch an die 1. Fassung (ohne Klarinetten) gebunden. Die Klarinetten-Beilage ist älter als der Systemtausch. Die Andante-Beilage wiederum entstand sicherlich nach der Klarinetten-Beilage. Bei dieser chronologischen Folge wird verständlich, warum Mozart in der Hauptpartitur so missverständlich notierte, dass es in nahezu allen historischen Quellen zur fehlerhaften Verdopplung der Takte 29–32/100–103 kommen musste. Für die Einfügung der Klarinetten-Beilage war im Andante noch kein Eingriff in die Hauptpartitur notwendig. Für die Andante-Beilage hingegen musste er zwar den genauen Ort durch den Doppel­ strich definieren, konnte aber den ursprünglichen Text dieser Stelle in der Hauptpartitur nicht ungültig machen, wenn er die 2. Fassung (mit Klarinetten) nicht verderben wollte. Allerdings muss die Taktverdopplung in den historischen Quellen nicht notwendigerweise ein Überlieferungsfehler sein. Möglicherweise hat sie Mozart sogar bewusst angewiesen, um ein Stimmenmaterial zu haben, aus dem beide Fassungen spielbar waren.

Drei Werkstadien, zwei Fassungen Mozart scheint also nach der 2. Fassung (mit Klarinetten) wieder zur 1. Fassung (ohne Klarinetten) zurückgekehrt zu sein. Das erhöht die Bedeutung der 1. Fassung und zeigt, dass die 2. Fassung weder die Fassung letzter Hand darstellt, noch dass sie der 1. Fassung aus Gründen der Chronologie vorzuziehen ist.

Aus der inneren Logik von Mozarts Notation im Andante in den Takten 27f. und 98f. ergibt sich folgende Chronologie der Fassungen und Varianten:

Die 1. Fassung wird in modernen Ausgaben unterschiedlich dargestellt. Die NMA gibt das 1. Stadium wieder, aber mit 32stel-Seufzern in der Flöte, und sie verbannt die Andante-Beilage in den Anhang. Die durch die vorliegende Ausgabe abgelöste alte Breitkopf-Ausgabe (PB 4412) bringt konsequent den Text des 1. Stadiums. Das hier erstmals in einer Ausgabe wiedergegebene 3. Stadium scheint bislang für die Praxis noch nicht zugänglich gewesen zu sein, ist aber für die 1. Fassung nach Ausweis der Überklebungen in Mozarts eigenem Stimmensatz und nach der Chronologie der Werkstadien die Fassung letzter Hand.

Zur Edition Die vorliegende Edition folgt der autographen Partitur und ihren zwei Beilagen als Hauptquelle und gibt beide Fassungen synoptisch wieder. Die 2. Fassung (mit Klarinetten) bildet den Haupttext der Partitur und der Stimmen. Die Abweichungen der 1. Fassung (ohne Klarinetten) im 3. Stadium werden in Klein­stich wiedergegeben. Dies ermöglicht sowohl einen anschaulichen Vergleich, als auch die problemlose Aufführung der beiden Fassungen und ihrer verschiedenen Stadien.

Wird die 2. Fassung (mit Klarinetten) gespielt, ist in der Partitur das Kleinstich-Oboensystem zu igno­ rieren. Die Oboen spielen aus den Stimmen „2. Fassung“. Wird dagegen die 1. Fassung (ohne Klarinetten), genauer das 3. Stadium, gespielt, ist in der Partitur das Kleinstichsystem der Oboen gültig. Die Oboen spielen aus den Stimmen „1. Fassung“, in den restlichen Stimmen ist die „1. Fassung“ – sofern es überhaupt Unterschiede gibt – in ossia-Systemen ausgewiesen. Schließlich besteht auch die Möglichkeit, das 1. Stadium der 1. Fassung aufzuführen. In diesem Fall ist allen außer den Oboen anzuweisen, die 2. Fassung (also den Haupttext, aber ohne Klarinetten) zu spielen. Die Flöte hat überdies im Andante, T. 27f. und 98f. tacet. Die Oboen spielen dann aus den Stimmen „1. Fassung“, folgen aber im Andante, T. 27–32 und 98–103 dem in den Stimmen als „1. Stadium“ bezeichneten ossia-Text (vgl. den ausnotierten Text im Anhang der vorliegenden Ausgabe auf S. 66f.).

Die Oboen- und Klarinettenstimmen der 2. Fassung enthalten weniger Artikulationsbezeichnungen.

Ob es sich dabei um Flüchtigkeit oder um Absicht handelt, ist unklar. Wie in Urtextausgaben üblich, werden editorische Ergänzungen durch Strichelung oder Klammerung im Notentext gekennzeichnet. Eine Angleichung beider Fassungen wurde weitestgehend vermieden. Über weitere Details wie wissenswerte Abweichungen von den Quellen, editorische Einzelentscheidungen und Angleichungen in Ausnahmefällen informiert der Kritische Bericht.

Preface Occasion for the Composition On 25 July 1788 Mozart entered the Symphony in G minor K. 550 in his personal work catalogue as finished.1 Shortly before, he had relocated to the “Drei Sternen” house in Alsergrund no. 135 (today 9th district, Währinger Str. 26).2 In his new, decentralized neighborhood, Mozart appreciated that he could “work [here] with more leisure as I am not exposed to a great many visitors.”3 Moreover, it is “more pleasant in the spring, summer and fall since I also have a garden.”4 No authenticated information whatsoever has survived concerning the occasion for which the work was written. In the complete edition of letters, Bauer and Deutsch assigned to June 1788 a letter in which Mozart mentions “academies [subscription concerts] in the Casino.”5 These academies, which are not certified anywhere else, have been taken into consideration as occasions for the composition of Symphonies K. 543, 550 and 551.6 However, the letter itself is not preserved in autograph form and not dated in its transmitted form. The dating of the letter to June 1788 has since been convincingly disproven.7 It thus remains a matter of speculation whether Mozart wrote the Symphony K. 550 for one of the abovementioned academies.

Mozart’s contemporary Johann Wenzel (1762–1831) mentions a performance of the Great G-minor Symphony in Mozart’s presence. In a letter from the year 1802 he writes that Mozart, “while it [the G-Minor Symphony] was being performed by Baron Wanswiten, […] had to leave the hall during the performance as it was not being played correctly.”8 It should be noted, however, that Wenzel was not personally present at this performance, but had only heard about it from Mozart (“I heard it myself in Vienna from the now departed Mozart”). Unfortunately neither the venue nor the date of the performance is known. Was it

the first performance?9 The Baron Gottfried Bernhard van Swieten mentioned by Wenzel (“Wanswiten”) (1733–1803) was a faithful subscriber to Mozart’s academies and organized Sunday matinées over the course of many years which Mozart regularly attended, at least in 1782.10 Van Swie­ten also founded the Gesellschaft der Associierten Cavaliere, which consisted of musically knowledgeable and generous aristocrats. Their concerts took place in private rooms in the palaces of the nobility.11 It is for these concerts of the Gesellschaft der Associierten Cavaliere that Mozart began in November 1788 to arrange Handel’s Acis und Galathea K. 566, the Messiah K. 572, the Alexanderfest K. 591 and the Caecilien-Ode K. 592. Van Swieten has gone down in history as the first person to reawaken the interest in Bach and Handel in Vienna. However, this one-sided view does not do justice to his role in Vienna’s musical life.12 He had, for example, commissioned the six Symphonies H. 657–662 (= Wq. 182) written by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach in 1773. Van Swieten expressed the wish that Bach should feel “completely free” with this composition, and “should make no allowance for the difficulties that would inevitably arise during a performance.”13 Were the three Symphonies K. 543, 550 and 551 perhaps also commissioned by van Swieten as a further testimony to his support of contemporary music?

Sources Today, the autograph score of the G-minor Symphony belongs to the Gesell­schaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna. It transmits the work in its first version (without clarinets). In addition, there are also two autograph supplements to the score. One contains an altered instrumentation of measures 29–32 and 100–103 (for the first version, thus without clarinets) in the Andante. It will henceforth be designated as the Andante supplement. The other supplement is a wind score with oboes and clarinet parts for the 2nd version (= clarinet supplement).

Next to the autograph score, a set of performing parts belonging to the Lannoy Collection at the Landeskonservatorium in Graz, Austria, is also of considerable interest. Although these parts constitute a very heterogeneous ensemble both outwardly on the basis of handwriting and paper, as well as imma­nently with reference to correctness and versions/variants, at least in the 1st and 2nd oboe parts (2nd version) and in the 2nd violin part, we find sporadic entries in Mozart’s hand as well.14 These entries, however, bring no important new findings to the musical text. The parts should probably be seen as indirect evidence for the performance of the 2nd version, as Mozart would certainly not have had the expensive copies of the 2nd version of the symphony made only for his desk drawer.

Variants in the Andante – The Doubling of Eight Measures At measures 29 and 100 in the autograph main score, one finds a double bar and a vide instruction which point to the Andante supplement (see the diplomatic rendition of the measures in question in the Appendix of the present edition pp. 62–65). This notation, and the fact that Mozart did not cancel the following measures 29–32 and 100–103 in the main score, suggests that the musical text of the Andante supplement was to be inserted here (and not replaced). Lending weight to this theory is the considerable distance of the double bar in measure 100, which also speaks for an insertion. Incidentally, the problem of the inserted measures is connected solely to the 1st version (without clarinets), since the resting parts (Ob II, Fg. II, Cor. I/II) are also notated in the Andante supplement and no clarinets are called for.

In nearly all historical sources and arrangements prior to the “old” Mozart Complete Edition (1882), the Andante supplement is appropriately inserted into the musical text, which expands the movement by four measures twice. Without being aware of this background information, Robert Schumann in 1841 thematized the unusual doubling of the musical material in the Breitkopf score of 1828 and recommended eliminating the double measures – namely the Andante supplement – for musical reasons.15 About 150 years later, Cliff Eisen once again turned to this problematic issue. He points out that in the 2nd violin part from the Lannoy Collection – which contains an autograph entry by Mozart – the text of

the Andante supplement was not inserted before the text of the main score (mm. 29–32 and 100–103), but replaced it through a subsequent correction.16 Since this correction was made by the same copyist as that of the part, it is possible to assume that the correction was carried out at about the same time and at Mozart’s request. This finding confirms Schumann’s observation that in the Andante of the old editions, two groups of four measures were superfluous. Judging from the above-mentioned violin part, however, measures 29–32 and 100–103 of the main score are to be eliminated and replaced by the apposite measures of the Andante supplement.

The clarinet supplement, in turn, contains no double measures, as was to be expected. Furthermore, the Andante supplement cannot simply be inserted with the text of the clarinet supplement, since not only the expressive build-up with suspensions at measure 103 (a flat1–g flat1) would be missing, but also the logical structure of the orchestration, namely the consistent attribution of the 32nd-note sighs either to the winds (main score/clarinet supplement) or to the strings (Andante supplement), would be disturbed: with the combination of Andante supplement and clarinet supplement, the 32nd-note sighs would now be found in the strings as well as in the clarinet.

Genesis of the Work Eisen’s findings are confirmed by the analysis of the notation in the autograph, which also tells us more about the genesis of the work. As we can see in the main score, Mozart subsequently altered the instrumentation in the Andante at measures 27f. and 98f., where he assigned the text of the 1st oboe to the flute. Judging from the notation, this alteration must be connected to the Andante supplement.

As can be seen in the autograph of the Horn Concerto K. 412, for example, Mozart carefully points out the change of staff both at its beginning and at the end of it. A similar indication is missing at the end of the Andante of the G-minor Symphony; yet it is also clear that the 32nd-note sighs in measure 29 are not to be played by the oboe, since the notation exceeds the customary ambitus of the classical oboe (c1–d3).

A similar case occurs at the 32nd-note sighs in measure 102. Mozart may have forgotten to mark the end of the staff exchange twice. But it is more likely that the staff exchange was formally ended by the double bar which refers to the Andante supplement. The staff exchange is thus coupled with the double bar and with the Andante supplement.

At first glance, it is unclear whether Mozart carried out the staff exchange at the same time that he was writing the Andante supplement or only later. Behind the staff exchange and the Andante supplement is undoubtedly the same intention, to wit, the simplification of the oboe part, above all. This could be evidence suggesting that the Andante supplement and the staff exchange were made at the same time.

As to the chronological categorization of the clarinet supplement: the main score contains several references to the 2nd version (with clarinets) in the Andante, namely at measure 27 “now has the Clarinette,” then “Clarinette” again at measure 28, after the page break and measure 98 “Clarinetto.” These entries were placed in parentheses in the diplomatic rendition of the main score reproduced in the Appendix (pp. 62f.), since – contrary to the view held by Robbins Landon and Otto Biba – they are probably not in Mozart’s hand.17 They presumably stem from the pen of Johann André, who owned this autograph and who was no doubt responsible for further entries made in the autograph in another hand and marked by the abbreviation “A.”18 If we disregard all the conjectured entries in other hands, there emerges a logical chronology of clarinet supplement and staff exchange in measures 27f. and 98f.: Mozart first wrote the clarinet supplement and exchanged the staves only later. If he had written the clarinet supplement after the staff exchange, the flute and 1st clarinet would have to play in unison at this openly orchestrated passages. The unison playing of flute and 1st clarinet is rather improbable here, however, since in the entire second version of the symphony, Mozart only writes occasional unison passages for flute and clarinet, and there only in tutti sections (e.g. Andante, m. 105).19 Mozart would have personally ensured the avoidance of the open unison

of flute and clarinet through an annotation similar to the one we find in another hand in the autograph. The clarinet supplement thus refers to the original version of the orchestration with the oboes in measures 27f./98f. Since the two oboe parts are also notated in the clarinet supplement (and are silent there), any misunderstandings can be ruled out.

Since Mozart certainly did not intend a flute and clarinet unison at measures 27f./98f., the staff exchange is valid for the 1st version (without clarinets). The clarinet supplement is earlier than the staff exchange.

The Andante supplement, in its turn, was most certainly penned after the clarinet supplement. Thanks to this chronological sequence, we can understand why Mozart wrote so misleadingly in the main score that it led to the erroneous doubling of the measures 29–32/100–103 in almost all historical sources. As to the insertion of the clarinet supplement, no intervention in the main score was required at the Andante. For the Andante supplement, however, Mozart did have to define its precise location through a double bar, but was unable to invalidate the original text of this passage in the main score if he did not want to disfigure the 2nd version (with clarinets). But the doubling of the measures in the historical sources does not necessarily imply a lapse in the transmission. It is even quite possible that Mozart deliberately indicated this so as to have a set of parts that could be used with both versions.

Three Work Stages, Two Versions After completing the 2nd version (with clarinets) Mozart thus seems to have returned to the first version (without clarinets) again. This raises the importance of the 1st version and shows that the 2nd version neither represents the “Fassung letzter Hand,” nor that it is to be preferred to the 1st version for pur­poses of chronology.

Proceeding from the inner logic of Mozart’s notation in the Andante in measures 27f. and 98f., we come to the following chronology of versions and variants:

The first version is depicted differently in modern editions. The NMA reproduces the first stage, but with 32nd-note sighs in the flute, and it banishes the Andante supplement to the Appendix. The old Breitkopf edition (PB 4412), which has been replaced by the present edition, consistently presents the text of the first stage. The third stage reproduced here for the first time in a printed edition seems to have been inaccessible for performers up to now, but is the “Fassung letzter Hand” for the first version, according to the paste-overs in Mozart’s personal performing material and to the chronology of the work stages.

About this Edition The present edition follows the autograph score and its two supplements as its principal source and reproduces both versions synoptically. The 2nd version (with clarinets) constitutes the principal text of the score and parts. The divergences concerning the first version (without clarinets) in the 3rd stage are reproduced in small type. This allows both a graphic comparison and an unproblematic execution of the two versions and their various stages.

If the 2nd version (with clarinets) is played, the oboe staff that is in small type in the score is to be ignored. The oboes play from the “2. Fassung” parts. If, however, the 1st version (without clarinets), or to be more precise, the 3rd stage is played, the staff with the oboes in small type is valid. The oboes play from the “1. Fassung” parts while in the other parts the first version is indicated in ossia staves, inasmuch

as there are any differences at all. Finally, there is also the possibility of performing the 1st stage of the 1st version. In this case all the instruments except the oboes should be instructed to play the 2nd version (thus, the main text but without clarinets). Moreover, there is a tacet in the Andante at the flute at measures 27f. and 98f. The oboes then play from the “1. Fassung” parts but follow the ossia text designated in the performance material as “1. Stadium” in the Andante, measures 27–32 and 98–103 (see the fully notated text in the Appendix to the present edition on pp. 66f.).

The oboe and clarinet parts of the 2nd version contain fewer articulation markings. It is unclear whether this is due to hastiness or intent. As is customary in Urtext editions, editorial additions are indicated by broken-line slurs or parentheses in the musical text. We have renounced the adjustment of the two versions as much as possible. See the Critical Report for further details and interesting information on divergences from the sources, individual editorial decisions and adjustments in exceptional cases.
