Vorwort Heinrich Marschner (1795–1861) war der bedeutendste deutsche Opernkomponist zwischen Carl Maria von Weber und Richard Wagner. Dennoch sind nicht einmal seine wichtigsten Werke – Der Vampyr, Der Templer und die Jüdin und Hans Heiling – in zuverlässigen, geschweige denn kritischen Ausgaben verfügbar. Keine der Opern kam zu Lebzeiten des Komponisten als Partitur zum Druck. Der Vampyr erschien erst 1925 in einer Edition von Hans Pfitzner.1 Diese Ausgabe war vornehmlich auf die Bedürfnisse der Theaterpraxis ihrer Zeit ausgerichtet und kann schon aufgrund dieses Ansatzes wissenschaftlich-kritischen Ansprüchen nicht genügen. Gravierender ist, dass sie sich nicht an ­Marschners Original hält. Das Werk wird so wiedergegeben, wie es Pfitzner aufgrund seiner Ästhetik, insbesondere seiner Ideen und Vorstellungen von der deutschen Romantik, sah, nicht aber so, wie Marschner es geschrieben hat. ­Pfitzners Eingriffe in die Partitur in Gestalt von massiven Kürzungen, Umstellungen, Transpositionen und Änderungen an der Instrumentation – um nur das Wichtigste zu nennen – gehen so weit, dass es keine Übertreibung ist, von einer Verfremdung oder gar einer Entstellung des Originals zu sprechen.

Die vorliegende Neuedition stellt das Original wieder her und macht es darüber hinaus überhaupt zum ersten Mal allgemein zugänglich. Damit wird ein zentrales Werk der deutschen Operngeschichte des 19. Jahrhunderts erschlossen; denn Der Vampyr, Grosse romantische Oper in zwei Akten, auf ein Libretto von Wilhelm August Wohlbrück (1794 oder 1796–1861), war im 19. Jahrhundert überaus erfolgreich und zudem von nicht zu unterschätzendem Einfluss. Wagners Der ­fliegende Holländer (1840/41) ist ohne Marschners Vampyr kaum vorstellbar; die berühmte Ballade der Senta hat formal und szenisch-dramaturgisch ihr unmittelbares Vorbild in der Romanze der Emmy (Nr. 12) aus Marschners Oper. Die Wirkungsmacht gerade des Tonfalls dieser Romanze wird nachhaltig durch die Tatsache veranschaulicht, dass sich seine Spuren noch bei Gustav Mahler in den Liedern eines fahrenden Gesellen (Nr. 1 „Wenn mein Schatz Hochzeit macht“) wiederfinden.

Als Oper mit gesprochenen Dialogen steht Der Vam­ pyr in der Tradition von Zauberflöte, Fidelio und Frei­ schütz, denen er in vielfältiger Weise verpflichtet ist. Das gilt vornehmlich für die gleichsam bunte Vielfalt der verwendeten Formen und Genres. Vom einfachen Lied bis zur dramatischen Arie, vom schlichten Chor bis zum großen Ensemble ist alles aufgeboten, was das musikalische Theater der Zeit zu bieten hatte, und die aus dieser Vielfalt und Verschiedenartigkeit erwachsenden Kontraste sind ein wesentliches Mittel der Dramaturgie

des Stücks. Vor allem aber erscheinen diese Kontraste den genannten Vorgängerwerken gegenüber erheblich ausgeweitet und verstärkt. Das markanteste Beispiel solcher Kontraste liefert der 2. Akt mit der Aufeinanderfolge des Duetts Emmy/Ruthwen Nr. 16 und der „Saufund Rüpelszene“2 Nr. 17. Dass der Chorgesang „Im Herbst da muß man trinken“ aus dem Beginn von Nr. 17 im 19. Jahrhundert zum verbreiteten Männerchorlied werden konnte, zeigt, wie genau Marschner eingängige Gestalt und populären Ton zu treffen wusste. Auf der anderen Seite führte er die traditionelle Opernnummer durch Ausdehnung des Umfangs und entsprechende Mehrteiligkeit im Sinne frei gestalteter dramatischer Szenen über den Standard etwa Webers hinaus, eine Eigenschaft übrigens, die Pfitzner in seiner Bearbeitung teilweise rückgängig gemacht hat. In der sich geschickt zwischen Rezitativ und Arioso bewegenden Deklamation, wie sie Nr. 14 besonders eindrucksvoll zeigt, klingt unüberhörbar die musikalische Sprachbehandlung Wagners an.

So wichtig und unbestreitbar die Vermittlerrolle ist, die Marschners Vampyr in der Geschichte der deutschen Oper zwischen Weber und Wagner zukommt, so ungerecht wäre es, wollte man das Werk auf diese Zwischen- oder Mittlerstellung reduzieren. So wie ihn Der Vampyr zeigt, ist Marschner weder ein bloßer Nachfahre oder gar Epigone Webers noch ein reiner Vorläufer Wagners. Er hat seine charakteristischen Eigenheiten, Züge nämlich, die bei Weber noch nicht ausgebildet sind und bei Wagner nicht mehr in Erscheinung treten. Das eindrucksvollste Beispiel dafür stellt die schon genannte Romanze der Emmy (No. 12) dar, deren besonderer Ton das unverwechselbare Eigentum Marschners ist.

Der Vampyr war bereits Marschners achte Oper, doch erst mit ihr erreichte der Komponist das, was man heute seinen Durchbruch nennen würde. Dabei dürfte nicht zuletzt auch das Sujet eine Rolle gespielt haben, das überaus aktuell war und, wie es scheint, einer Zeitbefindlichkeit entsprach. Die Thematik geht auf eine englische Erzählung zurück, die im April 1819 im Londoner New Monthly Magazine unter dem Titel The Vampyre erschien und seinerzeit allgemein Lord Byron zugeschrieben wurde. Entsprechend heißt es auf der Titelseite des gedruckten Librettos von Marschners Oper: Nach Lord Byron’s Erzählung frei bearbeitet. Es war damals noch nicht bekannt, dass die Erzählung, wenngleich aus dem unmittelbaren Umkreis Byrons stammend, doch kein Werk Byrons selbst ist, sondern von dessen Freund und Arzt Dr. John Polidori (1795–1821) stammt. Die Erzählung wurde schon bald dramatisiert, so 1820 in Frankreich als Le Vampire, Mélodrame en trois actes, avec

V un prologue; Verfasser waren Pierre-François-­Adolphe ­armouche, Charles Nodier und Achille-François-­ C Eléonor Marquis de Jouffroy d’Abbans (erste Aufführung in Paris im Theater Porte Saint-Martin am 13. Juni 1820, Musik von Alexandre Piccini). Die Autoren verlegten die Handlung von Polidoris Erzählung nach Schottland, erweiterten und veränderten sie und setzten an die Stelle des tragischen Endes bei Polidori einen versöhnlichen Schluss. Dieses Stück wiederum war die Vorlage einer deutschen Version, die 1822 in Braunschweig erschien; sie hatte den Titel: Der Vampyr oder die Tod­ ten=Braut, ­romantisches Schauspiel in drei Acten; in Ver­ bindung eines Vorspiels: Der Traum in der Fingalshöhle; nach einer Erzählung des Lord Byron. Deutsch bearbeitet von L. ­Ritter. Dieses Theaterstück, das aufgrund seiner opernhaften Züge selbst schon zum Opernlibretto tendiert, sowie Polidoris Erzählung bildeten die Quellen für das Libretto von Marschners Oper. Außerdem zogen Wohlbrück und Marschner noch Byrons Verserzählung The giaour (1813) heran, aus der Ruthwen in Nr. 14 fast wörtlich zitiert. Vermutlich stützten sie sich dabei auf die 1819 in Berlin erschienene deutsche Übersetzung Der Gauer. Bruchstücke einer türkischen Erzählung. Die Szene der Introduktion Nr. 1, in der dem Vampyr eine letzte Frist gewährt wird, ist demgegenüber unverkennbar Webers Freischütz entlehnt, während die Dramaturgie insgesamt an Mozarts Don Giovanni gemahnt: Ruthwen, der Frauenverführer, fährt am Ende zur Hölle; seine Opfer sind drei Frauen von unterschiedlichem sozialem Stand – Emmy entspricht fast überdeutlich Zerline –, und sein Gegenspieler Aubrey ist der Verlobte einer der Frauen. Auch musikalisch steht Mozarts Oper im Hintergrund; nicht zufällig ist d-moll die Haupttonart des Werks.

Die vorliegende Edition fußt auf handschriftlichen Theaterpartituren des 19. Jahrhunderts, da Marschners autographe Partitur verschollen ist und Druckausgaben außer der erwähnten Hans Pfitzners nicht zur Verfügung stehen. Die früheste Theaterpartitur stammt von der Weimarer Erstaufführung 1829. Dass diese ­Marschners Intention wiedergibt, steht außer Zweifel, da sie mit dem im gleichen Jahr erschienenen, von Marschner selbst erstellten Klavierauszug übereinstimmt. Doch ist sie nicht mit der ursprünglichen Fassung identisch; eine in Schwerin erhaltene Theaterpartitur enthält Passagen, die in allen übrigen überlieferten musikalischen Quellen fehlen. Auch das Textbuch in der Druckfassung von 1828 weist Texte auf, die möglicherweise ursprünglich komponiert, dann jedoch verworfen wurden. Es ist zu wünschen, dass die Originalgestalt von Marschners Oper nicht nur von Historikern und Wissenschaftlern wahrgenommen wird, sondern auch ihren Weg auf die Bühnen der Opernhäuser zurückfindet; denn das Werk ist nicht nur ein kunstgeschichtliches Dokument, sondern auch ein immer noch lebendiges, zumindest lebensfähiges musikalisches Kunstwerk.

Preface Heinrich Marschner (1795–1861) was the most significant German opera composer between Carl Maria von Weber and Richard Wagner. Not even his most important works, however, – Der Vampyr, Der Templer und die Jüdin and Hans Heiling [The Vampire, The Templar and the Jewess, and Hans Heiling] – are available in reliable, let alone critical editions. None of the operas was printed as a score during the composer’s lifetime.

Der Vampyr first appeared in 1925 in an edition by Hans Pfitzner.3 This edition was primarily geared to the needs of the theater practice of its time and due to this approach cannot satisfy scholarly critical requirements.

More seriously, it does not keep to Marschner’s original.

The work is thus reproduced as Pfitzner viewed it, based on his aesthetics, especially his ideas and notions of German Romanticism, but not as Marschner wrote it.

Pfitzner’s interventions in the score in the form of massive cuts, rearrangements, transpositions, and orchestration changes – to name only the most important – go so far that it is no exaggeration to speak of its being disassociated from or having distorted the original.

The present new edition restores the original and makes it generally accessible for the first time ever. This will open up a central work of 19th-century German ope­ ra history; for The Vampire, Large Romantic Opera in Two Acts [Der Vampyr, Grosse romantische Oper in zwei Ak­ ten], on a libretto by Wilhelm August Wohlbrück (1794 or 1796–1861), was extremely successful in the 19th century and also of an influence not to be underestimated.

Wagner’s Der fliegende Holländer [The Flying Dutchman] (1840/41) is hardly conceivable without ­Marschner’s Vampyr; Senta’s famous ballad has its direct role model, formally and dramatically staged, in Emmy’s Romanze (No. 12) of Marschner’s opera. The powerful impact of the tone of just this Romanze is sustainably illustrated by the fact that one can recover its traces in Gustav Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden ­Gesellen [Songs of a Wayfarer] (No. 1 “Wenn mein Schatz Hochzeit macht”).

As an opera with spoken dialogue, Der Vampyr is in the tradition of the operas Zauberflöte, Fidelio, and Frei­ schütz, to which it is in many ways indebted. This is especially true of the colorful variety of forms and genres used. From the simple lied to the dramatic aria, from the simple chorus to the large ensemble, everything from the musical theater of the time is on offer, and the contrasts arising from this diversity and variety are an essential means of the piece’s dramaturgy. Above all, however, they seem to be considerably expanded and strengthened in comparison to its predecessors mentioned above. The most striking example of such contrast is provided by the second act with the sequence

of the Emmy/Ruthwen duet, No. 16, and the “boozingand ruffian’s-scene,”4 No. 17. That the choral song “Im Herbst da muß man trinken” from the opening of No. 17 could become a popular male chorus in the 19th century shows just how clearly Marschner was able to capture a catchy form and popular tone. On the other hand, he kept the traditional opera number to well above the standard such as Weber’s, by extending the scope and relevant multiple sections in the sense of freely designed dramatic scenes, a feature incidentally, which Pfitzner partially reversed in his edition. Heard in neatly moving between recitative and arioso declamation, especially impressively shown in No. 14, can unmistakably be Wagner’s musical language.

As important and indisputable as the mediating role played by Marschner’s Vampyr is in the history of German opera between Weber and Wagner, it would be unfair to reduce the work to this intermediary position.

Just as Der Vampyr shows, Marschner is neither a mere Weber descendant, nor even a Weber epigone, nor a pure Wagner forerunner. He has his characteristic idiosyncrasies, traits that are not yet developed by Weber and no longer appear in Wagner. The most impressive example of this is Emmy’s already mentioned Romanze (No. 12), whose special tone is Marschner’s unmistakable property.

Der Vampyr was already Marschner’s eighth opera, but it was not until then that the composer arrived at what today could be called his breakthrough. Last but not least, the subject played an extremely topical role, seeming to be in tune with the age. The subject matter goes back to an English narrative that appeared in April 1819 in London’s New Monthly Magazine under the title The Vampyre and was generally attributed at the time to Lord Byron. According to the title page of the Marschner opera’s printed libretto, it was: “Freely Arranged from Lord Byron’s Tale”. Not known at the time was that the narrative, though coming from Byron’s immediate vicinity, was not by Byron himself, but by his friend and doctor, John Polidori (1795–1821). The narrative was soon already dramatized in France in 1820 as Le Vampire, Mélodrame en trois actes, avec un prologue; the authors were Pierre-François-Adolphe Carmouche, Charles Nodier, and Achille-François-Eléonor Marquis de Jouffroy ­d’Abbans (first performance in Paris in the Theater Porte Saint-Martin on 13 June 1820, music by ­Alexandre ­Piccini). The authors moved the plot of P ­ olidori’s story to Scotland, expanded and changed it, and gave it a conciliatory conclusion instead of Polidori’s tragic ending.

This piece in turn was the model for a German version that appeared in 1822 in Braunschweig; it had the title:

This theater piece, itself tending to an opera libretto due to operatic traits, formed together with Polidori’s story the sources for the libretto of Marschner’s opera. In addition, Wohlbrück and Marschner drew on Byron’s narrative The Giaour (1813), from which in No. 14 Ruthwen is almost literally quoted. Presumably, they relied on the German translation Der Gauer. Bruchstücke einer tür­ kischen Erzählung [The Giaour. Fragments of a Turkish Narrative], published in Berlin in 1819. The scene of the introduction No. 1, in which the vampire is granted a final time limit, is unmistakably borrowed from Weber’s Freischütz, whereas the dramaturgy as a whole is reminiscent of Mozart’s Don Giovanni: Ruthwen, the seducer of women, goes to hell in the end; his victims are three women of different social standing – Emmy is almost overtly Zerline – and his antagonist Aubrey is the fiancée of one of the women. Mozart’s opera is also musically in the background; it is no coincidence that D minor is the main key of the work.

The present edition is based on 19th-century manu­ script theater scores, since Marschner’s autograph score is lost, and printed editions are not available, ex-

cept for the aforementioned by Hans Pfitzner. The earliest theater score comes from the Weimar premiere in 1829. That it reproduces Marschner’s intention is beyond doubt, since it agrees with the piano score made by Marschner himself and published the same year. It is, however, not identical to the original version; a theater score preserved in Schwerin contains passages that are missing in all other surviving musical sources. The printed 1828 version of the libretto also contains texts that may have been originally composed but were then discarded. It is to be hoped and desired that the original shape of Marschner’s opera is not only perceived by historians and scholars, but also finds its way back onto the stages of opera houses; for the work is not only an art-historical document, but also a still living, at least viable musical work of art.
