Leipzig, Herbst 2016

Preface Along with Johann David Heinichen and Johann Adolf Hasse, Jan Dismas Zelenka can be considered one of the most important representatives of the Dresden Baroque. Born in 1679 in the Bohemian Launiowitz (Louňovice), he most likely took his first music lessons from his father, an organist. We know little about his early years, though presumably he studied at the Prague Jesuit College. From 1710/11 until his death in 1745 he worked at the Dresden Hofkapelle – first as double-bass player and later as church-music composer. During a longer stay in Vienna in 1716 –1719 he studied with the Imperial Court Kapellmeister Johann Joseph Fux and dealt intensively with the works of earlier masters as part of his studies. Upon returning to Dresden, Zelenka focused his activity above all on organizational and compositional duties for the Catholic religious services at the Dresden court. Some 20 mass settings by Zelenka, together with many other sacred works, have passed down to us from the years between 1712 and 1741. The five late masses (ZWV 17-21) that Zelenka began writing in the second half of the 1730s can clearly be distinguished from the early masses in musical idiom and conception. Audible here, for example, is the influence of the longtime Dresden court Kapellmeister Johann Adolf Hasse, especially pertaining to the design of the arias and orchestral ritornelli. The often highly expressive individual musical idiom is an achievement of Zelenka's late style. The difference is also obvious even from a glance at the scoring alone: in the late masses he no longer uses any “large” scorings with trumpets and timpani, but rather the smaller, standard setting with two oboes, violins, viola and basso continuo.
Zelenka’s Missa votiva comes from the year 1739 and is the longest of the composer’s mass settings. This work, unlike the three succeeding Missae Ultimae, was known to have been performed during Zelenka’s lifetime1 and is also to be found listed – as, incidentally, the final entry – in his manuscript catalogue of his own and others’ church-music works. The name Missa votiva refers, according to Reinhold Kubik, to a vow that Zelenka had made during an acute phase of illness. This is clear from two entries in the autograph score at the work’s opening and closing. Thus, Zelenka recorded on the title page of the Kyrie the following quotation from psalm 115: “Vota mea reddam” (“I shall fulfill my vow [to the Lord]”); then at the end of the Dona nobis pacem he noted: “Missam hanc A: M: D: G: ex voto posuit J: D: Z: post recuperatam Deo Fautore salutem” (“With this mass to the greater glory of God … Jan Dismas Zelenka honored his oath after he had recovered his health with God’s help”).2 Just as in Zelenka’s other late masses, the Missa votiva is composed as a numbers or cantata mass in the stile misto.3 Polyphonic choral movements alternate here with solo arias whose closeness to the “modern” opera style is unmistakable (e.g., Christe eleison), and with orchestrally-accompanied homophonic-declamatory choral sections. There, we encounter the latter in the most diverse form and manifestation: to be found besides short block-like choral movements such as Kyrie II, III, and Cum Sancto Spiritu I are concertante choral movements with in part virtuosic orchestral ritornelli – whether with or without interpolated solo passages (Kyrie I, Gloria in excelsis Deo). In the largedimensioned Et resurrexit the different elements are
even combined with each other within a single number: Thus, here there are concertante instrumental sections, declamatory choral blocks, solo ariosi, and a choral fugue to close the number. In the Missa votiva again there is a section of the mass where Zelenka devoted special attention to its composition. Here it is the Credo that he highlighted “by a bold design and large span as an integrated art medium.” So, for example, the introductory movement Credo in unum Deum is “designed with a pseudo-Gregorian formula in long note values counterpointed by the other voices. … The formula-based sections are framed by virtuosic instrumental ritornelli in the most recent taste.”4 Then, in stark contrast to this density of substance is the subsequent alto aria Et incarnatus est accompanied by muted strings, attached to which is the Crucifixus fugue, complexly worked out for its part, where Zelenka once more “displays his contrapuntal mastery”5; the section of the mass is closed by the multifarious Et resurrexit (see above). Just as in his other late masses, we also discover in Zelenka’s Missa votiva an architectonically closed work conception. Constitutive elements here are again a “firmly established tonality plan,” a “certain shared
substantial thematic material” as well as a formally structured framework that is achieved, for example, by the musical repetition of Kyrie I in the concluding Dona nobis pacem. Leipzig, Fall 2016
