David Livert ’80
Livert ’80 Appointed to SPSSI’s UN Committee Bolles alumnus David Livert ’80 has been appointed to the United Nations Committee of the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues (SPSSI). Livert is an Associate Professor of Psychology at Penn State University’s Lehigh Valley campus. SPSSI is an accredited Non-Governmental Organization in consultative status at the United Nations with the Department of Public Information (DPI), the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). As a SPSSI UN/NGO representative, Livert will bring psychological data and expertise to issues on the UN agenda, including human rights, disaster relief, mental health and well-being, education, climate change, gender equality, migration, aging and sustainable development. Livert received his undergraduate and master’s degrees in psychology from Vanderbilt University and his Ph.D. in social psychology from the City University of New York Graduate Center. His research focuses on social contact within intergroup contexts, ranging from the professional kitchen to study abroad programs. Livert has conducted a number of projects benefitting community organizations, including an examination of intergroup conflict among residents of a senior citizen’s housing development for the Allentown Housing Authority and development of social indicators for the Lehigh Valley Alliance on Aging, and evaluation of an after-school program for high-risk children for the Allentown School District. He has led evaluations for the New York Department of Education, New York State United Teachers, California State Library and National Science Foundation’s GK-12 program. He serves on the board of the Community Music School in Allentown and the leadership committee of the Easton Hunger Coalition. Livert’s research articles have appeared in American Journal of Preventive Medicine, American Journal of Public Health, Journal of Drug Issues, Language, Multivariate Behavioral Research, Professional Psychology, and Sociological Methods.
