JYF Aged Bulls

Our bulls are not pushed to maximize yearling data. Instead, they are managed to grow out over winter; and this year were fed a mix of 50% Kochia weed, 25% straw, 25% greenfeed on return to the yard. We topped off with 12# of a 15% lentil based pellet. We try to get the bulls ready for multiple years in the breeding pasture.

We have made every effort to provide you, our customer, with the best bull for your money. We calve on the range, in April and May. This provides a 2 year old bull that will cover more cows and save you money. We also have a fall program where we calve from Sept 1 to Oct 15. These bulls are basically big January yearlings and provide another age option.

No bulls are sold before the sale so you’re picking from the entire calf crop. Due to their age, these bulls have gone through extra rounds of culling to ensure that they are as problem free as possible.

The JYF aged bulls are designed with you in mind. It is extremely important to us that you get the best bull to meet your requirements. We will assist in any way we can, including at the auction. If you are not totally satisfied with your selection, you will not own him.

Management Rating

We have been chute scoring docility at weaning since the system came out. We have found it useful, but that it did not adequately describe a bull’s demeanor at sale time.

Bulls change as they get older and their testosterone levels increase. We see differences when working them to measure Yearling data, as well as sale preparation activities like picturing and video. In an effort to better describe a bull’s disposition before they find out what they are made for; we have come up with the JYF Management Rating. We have scored them multiple times, on our own and talked about the scores together.

We assure you that we have taken every opportunity along the way to weed out a potential problem bull. This rating is simply another way to differentiate one bull from another.

1. Petable without halter breaking 2. Easily handled no matter the situation 3. Easy going. Very easily halter broke 4. Quieter than average, but slightly restless and may be stubborn during processing 5. Typical temperament. Manageable but nervous and impatient. Exits chute briskly 6. Restless and always moving away in the pen 7. Easily managed with other cattle, not so easily alone.

8. Heads up with a big flight zone. Seems to be the first to run 9. May exhibit attack behavior when handled alone 10. Always very aggressive, pronounced attack behavior At the time of printing, the sale videos have not been shot. Once they have been, the management ratings will be compiled and included on our supplement sheet prior to the sale

Herd Health Program Prior to breeding - All cows and bulls are vaccinated with modified-live vaccine for: IBR, BVD (types 1 &2) PI3, BRSV. Calves are vaccinated with modified-live vaccine for: IBR, BVD (types 1&2) PI3, BRSV, 8 way clostridial, haemophilius, pasturellia.

Bulls, cows and calves are treated for internal and external parasites.

Prior to weaning – All calves vaccinated (boostered) with modified-live vaccines for: IBR, BVD (types 1&2) PI3, BRSV, 8 way clostridial, haemophilius, pasturellia.

Bulls, cows and calves treated with pour-on parasite control.

Prior to Sale - All bulls are semen tested and given the first treatment of Fusogard.

All cows are tested for Johne’s disease. We have a zero tolerance policy for positive tests. These animals and their offspring are removed from the breeding herd to insure the the future health of your herd.

THE ¾ BLOOD CALF As we celebrate 50 years of Limousin in Canada we can reflect on the early years and get excited about the future.

The first imports were fullblood bulls. With these importations we caught the fever of raising cattle with muscle. Limousin provided the calving ease that imports of Charolais, Simmental and Maine Anjou lacked. These two traits of muscle and calving ease are still the reasons commercial cattlemen love Limousin today. However, these first imports also came with largely poor dispositions and a lack of scrotal size. It is a perception that the breed will always have to deal with commercial customers. Reputable breeders of today have overcome the drawbacks of disposition and scrotal size.

As people bred their commercial cattle they loved the muscle. The first cross was good but the second cross of Limousin on a ½ blood cow created the calf everyone loved. All of these early assessments were “eye ball” tests with the understanding that more meat was a good thing.

Today the lim-flex cattle in the U.S.A. have proven that ¾ blood cattle are the ticket when it comes to yield and marbling. However, if you take these ¾ blood males and breed them to Angus cows you get a 37.5% that doesn’t consistently have muscle.

There are currently many programs tracking bloodlines to see which cattle marble and yield. There are lots that do one or the other, but the ones that do both consistently, in the commercial arena, are ¾ blood Limousin.

Our goal as beef producers should be to create the best product possible. We should be aiming for cattle that yield 70% and marble AAA (choice). Tracking programs tell us they are out there. Hopefully there are grids that reward these efforts. An animal that yields 65% and marbles AAA (choice) should receive more dollars per pound than one that yields 59%.

We still have many challenges. If the ¾ blood is what we need to propagate then how do we get there? If you breed a ½ blood bull to an Angus cow you will be a long time getting to ¾ blood calves. We have to keep promoting to commercial producers the value of keeping some easy fleshing ½ bloods. Then we need to continue to promote the value of paying a premium for cattle that are above average for yield and marbling.

The breed has overcome many challenges in the last 50 years. We have added a choice of coat color and also added the polled factor to a list of convenience traits.

Through all the improvements made to the original imports of Limousin one fact remains. The ¾ blood has been and will continue to be the Cadillac commercial calf for the beef industry.

Combine that with great phenotype and perfect hair, makes him herd bull material.

His dam had 8 natural calves in a row before moving into our transplant program. All of his progeny have excelled in performance.

Her 2018 sale bull topped the sale selling to Mike Leblanc of Roblin, Manitoba for $19,000. Her 2019 sale bull and full brother to Franchise was a high seller at $17,500. to Symens Brothers of Amherst, South Dakota.

She has proven her ability to sire herd bulls.

Franchise sports a 121 weaning ratio, a 109 yearling ratio and a rib eye ratio of 118 while maintaining a marbling index of 100. He is in the top 3 % of the breed for weaning, yearling and rib eye EPD’s. Combine that with a calm disposition and you have a herd bull with unlimited potential. 101W excelled in production by recording a 114 lifetime index on her natural born calves. We moved her into our transplant program where she again excelled and we were able to record 24 calves in 2018.

Due to her untimely death we don’t have a picture but we do have a picture of JYF 816F who is one of her many daughters. We can say she was moderate framed with a perfectly balanced udder. ROLE OF THE ASSOCIATION: The Canadian Limousin Association shall not be responsible for any guarantees given by a seller of Limousin cattle.

The seller may use any registered Limousin bull available to him/her, in which case the said female will be reclaimed by the purchaser at his/her expense.

BULL BREEDING GUIDELINES: All bulls offered for sale as breeding bulls, except calves at side, must be guaranteed breeders.

Should the seller fail to prove the female a breeder, the buyer has the option to either accept a replacement F.O.B. to seller’s ranch, or a refund of the actual purchase price. No incidental expenses such as feed, veterinary charges, interest, etc. will be charged by either party, and in no event shall the seller be responsible for reimbursing more than the purchase price. In the event the buyer of an “OPEN” heifer finds that she was in fact in calf on sale day, he/she may return the heifer to the seller and at his option receive a satisfactory replacement or a refund of the purchase price. In the event a female sold as being safe in calf does not calve to the published and/or announced breeding date(s), the buyer, after notifying the seller in writing, may return the female and receive an immediate full refund of the purchase price.

Should any bull fifteen months of age or over fail to prove a natural breeder after being used on cows known to be breeders and free of any venereal disease, the buyer shall report in writing to the seller and provide a report of a complete examination by a qualified veterinarian.

This notification shall be provided to the seller no later than four (4) months following the date of purchase or six (6) months after the bull has reached fifteen (15) months of age, whichever is later. The buyer shall return the bull to the seller at the buyer’s expense. The seller shall have the opportunity to have the bull examined by a veterinarian of his choice. In the instance of a fertility re-test by the seller the bull must weigh the same or more than his posted adjusted 365-day weight. If the bull falls short of this weight then he must be reconditioned to meet the weight and then be re-tested. The seller will then have 45 days to prove this bull a breeder. If this bull proves to be a satisfactory breeder the bull shall be returned to the buyer.

In the event the seller fails to prove the bull a satisfactory breeder the buyer has the option to either accept a replacement F.O.B. the seller’s ranch or a refund of the actual purchase price. No incidental expenses such as feed, veterinary charges, interest, etc. will be charged by either party. In no event shall the seller be responsible for reimbursing more than the purchase price.

FEMALE BREEDING GUIDELINES: Females represented as being “pregnancy tested safe in calf” are considered breeders without further guarantee. Cows and heifers represented as “bred” are not guaranteed safe in calf; but these, as well as open heifers selling as individual lots, are guaranteed to be breeders.

In the event a female is claimed to be a non-breeder after having been bred naturally to a bull known to be a breeder and after having been examined by a qualified veterinarian, the matter must be reported in writing and the veterinarian’s report should be provided normally no later than six (6) months after the sale date or prior to the heifer attaining eighteen (18) months of age. Assuming that the female is returned to the seller in adequate body condition, the seller shall have seventy (70) days following the date that the female was returned to the seller in

EXCEPTION TO GUARANTEE: No guarantee is given that a pregnant female will deliver a live calf, nor that she will carry the calf full term. In cases where the animal is subjected to any growth hormonal treatment, embryo transfer, or surgical reproduction technique after the sale, the guarantee shall be null and void.

SUCKLING CALVES GUIDELINE: No guarantee of any kind applies to suckling calves less than six (6) months of age sold with their dam.

RIGHTS AND OBLIGATIONS: The above terms and conditions of the sale shall constitute a contract between the buyer and the seller and be equally binding to both. Resale of animals following purchase shall constitute a separate transaction and the rights and obligations of these two parties connected thereto are not covered by the terms and conditions of the sale.

ARBITRATION: In the event of a dispute, the purchaser and seller may ask the Canadian Limousin Association to arbitrate the matter. The Arbitration Board shall be conducted under the rules of arbitration wherein the purchaser and seller will each appoint one person to the Board and the Canadian Limousin Association will appoint a Chairman. Each party will have one vote, and the decision of the majority of the Board being binding on both the seller and the purchaser.
