COMMERCIAL PRODUCER OF THE YEAR ROUTLEDGE STOCK FARMS Routledge Stock Farms is a grain, cattle, and custom feedlot operation located near Lenore, Manitoba. It is run by Chris and his wife Charlene and their 2 children Owen and Avery. They have 2100 acres of grain land, feed 1500 head of cattle in their feedlot, and calve 170 cows. They have been using Simmental bulls in their breeding program for over 20 years. They like using Simmental bulls for their growth, easy fleshing, and terrific maternal traits. They have noticed that Simmental cross calves in the feedlot convert and gain on a consistent basis from backgrounding to finishing.

Eva is a broody female we are really high on. She has easy keeping, no miss mama cow written all over her. Her sire was a Wallbanger son we really admired as a yearling and aquired some semen on him. He has made us some top-notch bulls and females that really crank out the pounds in the fall. As you can see 23E carries some very strong performance EPDs, so if you are looking for some extra lbs in a calf in the fall, she’s the one for you. We first noticed “Angie’s” dam as a headliner in the Wilcox showstring as their “jackpot open heifer” that year. Her presence just dictated “bull factory” in the making and when she became available at the Pembina Triangle Sale we were fortunate enough to have her join our program. At the request of our commercial customers for hybrid bulls we opted to breed her “LT Bandwagon 3105” with semen we purchased from Black Sand at their dispersal. However, to date the “Dark Angel 2B” cow has never had a bull calf, just powerhouse heifers and “Angie” is one of her best! She was bred to stay here to our calving ease specialist, the “Sevens” bull, but somehow we were convinced by Darryl to bring her to town. If you like ’em big , she won’t be hard to find sale day.

Affectionately referred to as “Bunny” around here, 2E goes back to the matriarch here, “Mader P Farmgirl 12W”. “Farmgirl” has done an amazing job here producing many champions and high sellers for us, including “Girl Crush” from last years sale that sold to WLB Livestock. We only offered her for sale because we had retained her maternal sister “Abracadabra 12A” in our herd. Brooklyn showed “Abby” extensively as a calf, then as a yearling, two year old pair and as a senior cow with “Bunny” at side successfully, and only because we wanted to bring a special one here did she consent to offering “Bunny” for sale. We don’t usually send this many breds but as our hybrid carries the service of “Sevens” we decided for those of you that may not be familiar with him we should show you what he has done for us. As you know, we breed solely black, but here’s a pretty good red heifer in her own right. Her dam “SBSF Black Caviar 63C” was our choice from the Schweitzer offering at the Hoedown sale that year knowing full well that she was bred red … she was that good! Our hopes were for a black calf, and we knew that “WS Beef King W107‘s” were pretty much maintenance free so we took the chance. Swing and a miss! We don’t keep the red ones so it’s opportunity time for someone. We dug deep into the tank to find some red semen to breed her and found one straw and it’s a good one.

We really can’t be taking all the credit on this girl. Last year we purchased the entire set of bred heifers from Acomb Valley Farms, and this girl was one of those pregnancies. We really love the uniformity of the Acomb females, and their added mass, muscle and power, and this girl reflects those traits. When Darryl came to select a heifer for this sale, we had 6 full black sisters for him to choose from. The idea came up to offer two for sale and let the cattlemen choose. The options of which two to bring was left up to us, which turned into some sibling arguments and many conversations with Dad and Barry. 72F was a favorite since the spring, and the more we were around her this fall she rose to the top of the group. The capacity, femininity, and hair coat she possess shouts herd bull maker. 115F spent the summer in the red field and wasn’t on the radar as soon, but when she stepped off the trailer we knew she was the second piece to the puzzle.The thickness, rib shape, and way she carries herself easily demands your attention and reminds us the most of her maternal sister who sold last fall for $9000 to NIsku Farms. 29B has been successfully flushed 5 times gathering up around 80 embryos. She has rose to the top of the Captain Morgan daughters around here. When we flushed her to Royal Flush we ended up with 7 females and 4 bulls. Which makes the decision to sell one a little easier. We could sit here all day and tell you all the things we like about these two but, we will leave that up to you. So take your pick at what will be the only daughter to sell this fall, off of Wheatland Royal Flush the 2016 Agribition Champion Bull.

A smaller framed heifer whose dam was purchased as a calf at side of lead off cow at Remington’s dispersal. Her dam was an excellent uddered, tank of a cow. This heifer represents the fourth generation of black blaze faced females on her dam side, going back to the Ultra Joker Cascade 90N donor. Both of my beds are sired by a Crosby son that the Clements of Wellwood owned. He puts nice udders on his daughters with good teat size and placement. We bred both heifers to calving ease bull, MRL Western Force 51B. AI Bred to MRL Western Force 51B on April 30/18. No exposure.

Lot 50: A smooth polled 100% fleckveih daughter of blueprint. The more blueprint daughters I see the more I like them. They seem to have some natural body great depth and eye appeal. 23F matches all those traits! Her dam is one of my favourite fullblood cows. She’s moderate framed, solid bodied, easy doing cow with lots of pigment. This one should be a real producer!!

Welcome to the 40th edition of the Keystone Konnection sale! Dustin and I are happy to consign three open heifers once again this year. We took a couple of years off to get our lives in order after relocating our farm to Fisher Branch and rebuilding our farming operation, but we’re back this year with our strongest offering yet! We’re consigning a trio of daughters sired by the $80,000, exclusive, red, blaze-faced bull, Springcreek Blue Chip 9D. These three heifers will be some of the first Blue Chip progeny to sell in Canada. As always, these heifers have been on a total herd health program since birth and are up-to-date with their vaccines and parasite control. This heifer comes from a productive cow family. 34F’s dam is a dark cherry red cow with a superb udder that catches Darryl Snider’s eye every summer. Years ago when I started our ET program, I utilized my purebreds with never-miss track records for recip cows. 15Z was one of those females and she was so reliable with taking embryos, that she served as a recip until last year when I put her back into production. 15Z is an ideal type of cow and 34F closely resembles 15Z when she was this age. 34F was slated for my keeper pen, but when Darryl spotted her alongside 15Z this summer, he was persuasive about consigning her! With the backing of her cow family and the extra maternal strength from Blue Chip, I am confident this heifer will develop into a highly productive, strong uddered cow.

Lot 55: We dug deep into our keeper pen to bring you this lead off heifer. She’s a beauty and has been one of my favourites all year! Really capacious, deep ribbed and soft made, long and strong over her top, feminine in her type and showing a strong foundation for an udder. She is a big performance heifer ranking 4th out of 22 contemporaries at weaning. With maternal greats like Black Joker, Liner 56U and Tara 111R in her lineage, she’s got the potential to make a great cow. Her granddam, 21Z, was one of the most beautiful cows that has ever walked our pastures. I think this heifer would make a great junior project she’s certainly pretty enough to be competitive in a halter!

Lot 56: 39F has a laid back disposition and carries the Blue Chip stamp. All of our Blue Chip progeny are very strong - the bulls are powerful with lots of scrotal and the heifers are big volumed, soft-made, broody females with strong udder development. I think Blue Chip daughters will make great cows and this heifer is no different. Her dam is a thick, tanky, easy keeping, 11 year old cow that has never skipped a beat. This Storm cow family has only been in our program for a few years, but it’s quality runs deep and is quickly becoming one of our most influential lines. A 3/4 sib to this heifer is one of my favourite, most productive young cows that keeps hitting home runs with every calf. If 39F turns out anything like her dam and sister, she’ll make a strong addition to her new owner’s herd.
