President’s Message
October is here, and Fall is in the air! It’s hard to believe how quickly the seasons change, and with them our industry is continually transitioning!
The Fall Parade of Homes recently took place from September 28th through October 1st. We had 28 Homes showcased by our builders and would like to give a big thank you to all the Builders, Subcontractors, Suppliers, and Parade Attendees for making it a successful event!
At our Fall Mixer, which is coming up on October 17th, we’ll have our upcoming Board Elections. We have a treat as Carl Harris from the National Association of Home Builders will be our Guest Speaker for the event! The location will be Lady J’s and is located on the South end of Tom O’Leary Golf Course. I encourage everybody to get more involved with our Association through committees, events, and the Board! This event is FREE to all members, spouses, and prospective members! Please register yourself and any guests that you will be bringing. We encourage you to bring prospective members who want to join our association!

What is Day of Caring? Day of caring was established to promote the spirit and value of volunteerism, increase awareness of local human service agencies, and demonstrate how people working together, for the good of the community can accomplish great things!
The Bismarck Mandan Professional Woman in Building volunteered with United Way for their 2023 Day of Caring at Camp Niche. We sanded and repainted the picnic tables, and cleaned out a storage shed.

The Benefits of Home Fire Sprinklers
Fire Prevention Week is observed each year during the week of October 9th in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. The fire caused devastating damage. More than 250 people were killed, 100,000 were left homeless, and more than 17,400 structures were destroyed. Every October, fire departments provide public education in an effort to decrease casualties and property loss caused by fire.
In the spirit of Fire Prevention Month, this article demonstrates some of the benefits of a proven fire protection technology that has been in use for over 100 years, fire sprinklers. While fire sprinkler systems have been around for over a century and have proven themselves time and time again in minimizing damage to property and saving lives, they still have more potential as their use expands to one- and two-family residences. For example.
• During 2015 – 2019, fire departments in the US responded to an average of 355,400 home structure fires per year. It is estimated that sprinkler systems were present at 23,600 (7 percent) of those homes. The 7 percent of reported home structure fires that occurred in properties with sprinklers, accounted for 1 percent of home fire deaths, 5 percent of home fire injuries, and 3 percent of home property loss.
• Sprinklers operated in 95 percent of the home fires in which they were present, and the fires were large enough to activate them. They were effective at controlling the fire in 97 percent of the fires in which they operated. Taken together, sprinklers operated effectively in 92 percent of the fires large enough to trigger them.
• In 89 percent of the home fires where the sprinkler system operated, only one sprinkler head activation was required to contain the fire. In 99.5 percent, five or fewer were required.
• Sprinklers save lives and reduce injuries and property loss. From 2015 to 2019, the civilian death and injury rates per reported home fire were 88 and 28 percent lower, respectively, and average property loss per home fire was 62 percent lower in reported home fires in which sprinklers were present compared to fires in homes with no sprinklers.
• The rate of firefighter injuries per home fire in which sprinklers were present was 78 percent lower than in homes with no Automated Extinguishing System (AES).
• In reported home fires in which sprinklers were present, the fire was confined to the object or room of origin 97 percent of the time, compared to 74 percent in homes with no sprinklers. Sprinklers are a very reliable and effective part of a fire protection design strategy. In addition to the reduction of civilian fire deaths per 1,000 reported fires when sprinklers are present, notable reductions can also be seen in the average financial loss per fire. In conclusion, increasing the use of sprinklers in one-and two-family homes can reduce the loss of life and property damage caused by fire. For more information on home fire sprinklers see the NFPA Fire Sprinkler Initiative webpage at https://www.nfpa.org/Public-Education/ Staying-safe/Safety-equipment/Home-fire-sprinklers/Fire-Sprinkler-Initiative, or contact your local fire department.

Kilde Construction –Parker Kilde
Kilde Construction is a locally owned and operated exterior construction company in Bismarck, ND. The owner, Parker, and our project manager, Logan, are Bismarck natives and are incredibly familiar with the area and its culture. We were recently named “Best Home Remodel Contractor” and a favorite for “Best Roofer” by the community in the Bismarck Tribune!
What is an interesting fact about your business that most people don’t know? When Parker first started Kilde Construction, he was just a man with a gutter machine. He has since turned it into a “one stop shop” by providing roofing, gutters, siding, decks and other custom projects!
Do you have any advice for someone just entering this industry? Be open to criticism and take in as much information as you can. “Watch, listen and learn. You can’t know it all yourself and anyone who thinks they do, is destined for mediocrity.”
What is a typical day like for you? The phone normally starts ringing at 7am and doesn’t quit until around 7pm. You will find Parker out and about, checking on our crews, doing walk throughs with customers and running the general day to day duties. Logan, our project manager, runs estimates, coordinates with customers and suppliers and makes sure every project is running in a smooth and timely matter. Meggan, our operations manager, takes care of all of our marketing and social medias as well as scheduling and internal office duties.
If we weren’t in the Roofing/Siding industry, We’d be …We are all convinced Parker’s brain never rests. He would be running some other business venture for sure, but the answer as to what business that would be would depend on the day!
What do you hope to see Kilde Construction accomplish in the coming years? Of course, to continue to grow at a consistent rate. To be a familiar name in the homes of people in our community — when your gutters leak or you see hail falling, we want to be your go to contractor.
What inspired you to enter this industry?
After the hailstorm in 2019, there was high demand for gutter contractors in the Bismarck and Mandan area. Parker purchased his gutter machine and took off running. Inspiration for becoming a roofer and sider stemmed from seeing the benefit and convenience in customers being able to use just one contractor for all work needed.
What makes your business unique from other Construction Companies in the area? We are heavy on the “customer first” motto. We strive to do right by every person we cross paths with. Parker has always said he runs a “good faith” business we want every customer to be satisfied and feel like they are worth going the extra mile for.
What is your motivation? Seeing the finished product at the end of every project. We are able to take a customer’s vision and turn it into something real. There is no better motivator than a happy customer and a beautiful home.
What is your favorite part of your job? Getting the opportunity to build relationships with our customers. Your house is likely your largest investment and we are honored to be their contractor of choice. We are given the opportunity to make a customer’s visions and ideas come to life with custom projects and are called on to help out when the unforeseen comes along, like hail.
What do you like to do in your spare time? All of our staff love to be outside! Whether hunting, fishing, hiking, or trolling along the river. We also love to travel and see new places.

SBGP FAQS
WHO IS SBGP?
Small Business Growth Partners is a national and private small business growth firm. We specialize in working with state home building associations and focus on helping to grow builders, remodelers, and HBA Associate members. We also operate as business owner “talent scouts”, and through our BPA Creation Process, only offer a small percentage of BPA recipients’ candidacy to one of our mentorship programs
WHAT IS A BPA?
BPA stands for Business Diagnostic and Plan of Actions and is a 12-month business “Plan of Actions” for you and your company, broken down by the disciplines of business. Sales, Marketing, Processes & Systems, Team & People, Actions & Accountability, Financial and Planning. With this benefit, you will also receive a full DISC/Motivational profile on yourself, and up to nine key employees (an HBA member favorite). The deliverable is a highly researched, extremely clear and actionable 50+ page “road map” for you and your business. The BPA will also be fully explained to you in a 1 5 hour BPA out brief with two executive coaches.
WHO WILL GET THE MOST BENEFIT FROM A BPA?
▪ You are considering Succession Planning
▪ You have hit a growth ceiling, where lack of systems is starting to show in your company with mistakes, and miscommunication (internally, and with customers and prospects)
▪ You aren’t clear on a strategic direction for your company (nor are your employees)
▪ You can’t seem to find the right people, and are having team cohesion issues
▪ You get a lot of calls, but not many turn into sales
▪ You are generating great sales, but the profit is not there at the end of the month
▪ You are trying to drive the business forward, but keep getting pulled back into the daily operations, and still act as the chief “firefighter” and problem solver
▪ You are becoming burnt out, working more and seeming to accomplish less
WHAT WILL IT COST?
The BPA and BPA Process is priced at $4,200 for the general public (as a one-time transaction). As a North Dakota Association of Builders member, it is paid for 100%. All we ask from you is five hours of your time spread over three to four weeks.
Redeeming Your 2023 BPA Is Easy
What is a Business Plan of Action?
Small Business Growth Partner’s services are not available to the general public. Eligibility is reserved solely for active NDAB members — for no additional cost. Developed through focusing on the issues of small business builders, remodelers, and trade companies, your BPA will include a detailed and comprehensive analysis of your business.
