President’s Message Wow! I can’t believe it’s December already! This means that 2023 is coming to an end, and with that my time as the President of the Bismarck-Mandan Home Builders Association. It has been a very rewarding experience for me to serve our association over the years, especially this year as President. As I look back, I’m very proud to see our membership and attendance at our events continue to hold their own on such a tough year economically in our industry. Congratulations, and THANK YOU to you all in continuing to support our association this year!

JOE HILLERSON 2023 BMHBA PRESIDENT

In November, I along with several of our members attended the ND Association of Builders Annual Banquet and Board Meetings in Fargo. It was a great event, with productive meetings. Additionally, the BMHBA was well represented with Vicki and Scott Moran of Hallmark Homes Inc. being named as the 2023 NDAB Builder of the Year! Congratulations Vicki and Scott, well done! Remember, all BMHBA members are also members of NDAB and are encouraged to get involved on a state level. If not state, I ask that you get involved locally, remember to always be recruiting! We have strength in numbers. Membership applications are available online and staff are always on standby to follow up on referrals.

I would also like to continue to remind everyone to sign up for the 2024 Annual Home Show which will be held on March 15 th and 16th at the Bismarck Event Center. The Home Show is a big event for our association, and I would like to encourage you all to sign up early as booths have already been going quickly! In closing, I’d like to give you all a heartfelt thank you for having me serve as the BMHBA President in 2023. It’s been an honor, and an experience that I’ve gained much more from than I gave. I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Make sure to sign up for these upcoming events: •

BMHBA PWB

The Professional Women in Building (PWB) met to commemorate its 3rd Anniversary Celebration at the beautiful Fabricators Unlimited Showroom. This event was a success, with a fantastic turnout of members who gathered to celebrate, connect, and make decisions regarding the organization's future. The evening began with an air of excitement as PWB members and guests arrived at the Fabricators Unlimited Showroom, a stunning venue that set the perfect backdrop for the celebration. The event was a testament to the strength and growth of the PWB community over the past three years, and it was heartening to see so many dedicated professionals in attendance. One of the key highlights of the evening was the election of the 2024 Executive Committee Members. The PWB community takes great pride in its commitment to empowering and promoting women in the building industry. The election process was an opportunity for members to have a direct hand in shaping the organization's future leadership. However, in true PWB fashion, the anniversary celebration wasn't all business. After the meeting, attendees had the opportunity to socialize with one another, fostering connections and friendships that are at the heart of the PWB community. Networking and sharing experiences are integral to our principles, and the event provided an ideal platform for members to do just that. The evening was filled with laughter, camaraderie, and a sense of achievement. It was a celebration of how far PWB has come in its mission to empower professional women in the building industry and a reminder of the work that still lies ahead. As the event came to a close, attendees left with a renewed sense of purpose and camaraderie. The Professional Women in Building 3rd Anniversary Celebration was a memorable evening that showcased the strength and dedication of its members. PWB is excited for another year of growth, empowerment, and advocacy in the building industry!!

Temporary Heaters Pose Threat for Construction Sites As Temperatures Fall Temporary heaters are the second leading cause of fires on construction sites nationwide, according to the National Fire Protection Agency. Construction-related fires can be particularly destructive because the structure itself is incomplete. The buildings may have exposed wood framing and wide-open spaces that allow a fire to grow and spread rapidly. Below are some temporary heating safety tips to follow:

• Fuel-fired heaters: Always use the right kind of fuel as specified by the manufacturer. Allow the unit to cool before refueling. Never refuel indoors. • Venting: All fuel-burning equipment should be vented to the outside to avoid carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. Never block a heater’s airflow to, or from, the fan. Obstruction of a heater’s air intake or exhaust could lead to overheating and create a potential fire hazard. • CO detection: Any time a fuel-fired heater is used, ensure that there is a CO monitor on site. • Fire Hazards & Combustibles: To avoid the risk of fire, do not use heating equipment on, or near, combustible surfaces. Heaters should only be installed on a non-combustible surface that extends a minimum of three feet beyond the front of the heater. Never operate a heater near flammable materials, chemicals or vapors. • Electrical Connection: Ensure the power supply cord’s plug cap is fully inserted into the outlet. To avoid overheating and a potential fire hazard, do not use an extension cord with the heater. • Breakers and GFCIs: An electrical outlet with a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) or a ground fault-protected circuit is recommended. • Maintenance & Storage: Ensure heaters have had sufficient time to cool down after use before moving or storing. Periodically clean the heater of any dust or particle accumulation. • Fire extinguisher: Keep a fire extinguisher within 50 feet of a heater. The minimum size is 3A,10B,C. Make sure workers know where it is located and how to use it. Builders FirstSource is your first source for great customer service and high quality building materials.

Around Our State The holidays are right around the corner, which is a great time to reflect on our member accomplishments in the past year. NDAB had a lot of changes in 2023, and we look forward to 2024 with what we can achieve in the new year! NDAB had a busy November with our fall events in Fargo. We were NDAB CEO happy to host Ed and Heather from Washington, D.C.! Day Two began with committee meetings and ended with our Annual Banquet at the Radisson Blu. The end of the evening concluded with a DJ and dance where a great time was had by all. The events came to an end with our fall board meeting on Day Three. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year We will be closed: Monday, Dec 25th and Monday, Jan 1st 2024

I was born in Wyoming in 1985 to Ramona and David Bernard. I have twin sisters Megan & Mindy. I have lived in Mandan, ND since 1987. I always thought I wanted to do something from one of our human basic needs for a living. My first thought was to be a chef. After many jobs in the restaurant industry, I joined my father at TSS. After 9 years of no summers off, working 6075 hours a week, it was time for something new. During this time, I met my beautiful wife Pam, we have been together for 11 years now. I’m proud to be stepdad to two beautiful girls, Tayla who is 23 and a registered nurse. Karley who is 17 and a junior at Mandan High. I’m proud of “my girls”. My family is my motivating factor that keeps me extremely hungry for success every day. These three girls are truly my WHY! I took a job as a maintenance technician to care for around 350 units. I quickly fell in love with solving our tenants’ issues and I would get an overwhelming satisfaction from helping them out. One day after fixing a garbage disposal I was in the parking lot filling out my work order paperwork and thought to myself I can’t imagine the vast need for this for homeowners. Instantly the company name and logo came to me, I drew it on a napkin I had. Excited that I found my purpose, I went home to talk with my wife about my plan and I went to work to start Fix it All. September 2019 it was up and running.

What is an interesting or fun fact about your business We offer a wide variety of services, as small as hanging a picture to full basement finishes and remodels or building shops and decks. Do you have advice for someone just entering this industry? Put extensive time into developing a detailed business, operating, marketing, and financial plan. Detailing job positions, expectations, and responsibilities. And, set goals, write them out and hit them.

What is a typical day like for you? 5:30am is the gym and after is having a good breakfast before heading to the office. I have a quick meeting with the team, make sure everyone is set up for success and that they are going to have a prosperous day. I usually have a full day of meetings or places to be or someone to meet. I am still looking at projects and submitting estimates.

If I wasn’t in this industry what would your next choice be and why would it be? I wanted to be a chef because we must eat -one of the staples of life. My short chef career wasn’t a waste because I would say I’m a pretty good cook!

What do you hope to see Fix It All accomplish in the coming years? Our goal is to be the premier, solutions-based company for all your home issues or dreams. I want Fix it All to have a culture where people are excited to go to work and help our clients. Our team always comes first over everything. Happy team members are more productive and create a better experience for our clients.

What inspired you to enter this industry? My father inspired me to enter this industry. His skillset is among the greatest, his business owner side of this topic is a different story though. I think that’s why I put so much effort into the business ownership side of this industry.

What makes your business unique from other Handy Man Services in the area? My team. A lot of handymen are typically single owner operators or have a guy to help. We have office staff to help with the experience we are trying to create. We wouldn’t be unique from others without the team, and we are different by offering An Experience.

What is your favorite part of your job? My favorite part of my job is watching my team grow in all aspects of their lives. I would say another favorite part is the growth of the team and their effects on our clients.

What do you do in your spare time? Right now, I like to learn everything I can! My wife and I have a flip house project we like to work on. I love lifting weights. I like to bird hunt with my dogs, bow hunt and fishing and ice fishing. In the summer we like to hang out around our pool, which my wife and I also built. I also love to garden and started pickling and making salsa last year with my daughter helping. Weekends are for preparing for the week ahead.

What is your favorite quote that speaks to you or business model the most? This is the toughest question. My favorite quote is “Get Shit Done” I have this tattooed on my wrist to keep me going. It’s easy for stuff to keep piling on your to do list. If you just get after and get shit done, to me the day is less
