As you turn into Ted Hughes’ driveway, rusty farm relics lead the way to his workshop with the name of his business, painted in big, bold, red letters: BUGGY WORKS. “I’ve had too many birthdays,” he tells me as he greets me inside, settling into one of many chairs scattered around the shop. You can gauge the lifespan of a tree by its rings. As for Ted, the angle of his posture clues you into his age. “83 in September,” he proudly announces but with the sobering realization a marathon runner may have as he begins to see the finish line. 26 miles is a long distance to run.
