Proudly supporting Indac Ltd as they celebrate 40 years in business

For 40 years Blenheim company INDAC Ltd has grown from humble beginnings, based at its Stuart Street premises, and is exporting its rotational and injection moulded products all over the world. The company’s name is an acronym from the words ‘innovation, design and construction’, which gives a clear indication of how the company operates. Thanks to the forward thinking of its founder and employees, INDAC Ltd has firmly established itself on the world stage bringing solutions to pretty much any challenge presented. The company’s story begins with founder Michael Hitchens. Originally from the UK Michael was lured to New Zealand by his uncle who, at the time, had a paint company based in Renwick. Michael worked for him before going into making rubber gloves which is what got him started. He later went on to become the first person to mould a smooth mussel float because; “If submarines

don’t have ribs on them, then these won’t either”, he notably declared. Michael’s passion for problem solving and ability to think up the previously unthinkable, enabled him to bring innovation to the forefront of his operations and has seen INDAC Ltd contribute a vast array of products to industries such as agriculture, aquaculture, marine, viticulture, government, science, waste management, construction and plumbing. Today, INDAC Ltd employs more than 20 staff who together contribute more than 200 years of experience in plastics engineering. Michael remains at the forefront of the company, but managing the operations is his right-hand man, general manager Graeme Rickard. Plastics engineering is an industry that Graeme has worked in since the age of 16. He’s been involved with the company for 12 years and is part of the “depth of experience” that INDAC

Ltd is well regarded for. “Right across our team we have people who specialise in plastics, design, engineering, manufacturing and prototyping. “We have a great mix of highly experienced employees who have been here long term, through to youth who bring with them fresh enthusiasm. We have guys who have worked in nuclear power plants, the aeronautic industry and very skilled draughtsmen,” he says. The company’s ethos is a simple one – “We design and create! If it’s something we haven’t done before, we learn very quickly and don’t know what the word ‘no’ is,” Graeme says. “We spend around 25 percent of our income on research and development which is huge for a business. But it’s how our business is driven. “If a customer walks in with an idea in their head, everyone here works together to find the solution. Innovation is our passion and it’s what drives us,” he says.
