Enjoying speech and drama Story and photo by Annabelle Latz Speech and communication is filling Fairhall School students with confidence and leadership skills. Last week all the pupils finished a week-long assessment by a Speech New Zealand oral assessor, taking part in the oral communication syllabis. The school has been has been using the Speech NZ programme for six years. Every two years students perform poems, speeches, drama and role plays, and are assessed on performance. “There’s lots of confidence, it’s lovely to see,” said oral assessor Christine Nash, who was down from Auckland last week. She said confidence with speaking and performing aloud to an audience reinforces communication skills they display amongst each other from day to day. “It’s really a pleasure to see all these children so skilled.” Denyse Healy, Deputy Principal at Fairhall School, said oral language is such a valuable tool. “It’s a valuable skill for life,” said Denyse. She said the Speech NZ syllabus is simple to use and the school does not have to start from scratch. “It’s seeing how excited the pupils are, they come out buzzing,” said Denyse. Pam Logan, chairperson of Speech NZ, lives in Blenheim, and is also a private tutor. “I just think that the oral communication is so good to help young people focus on putting their ideas out there.” Pam hopes more schools in Marlborough will pick up the Speech NZ syllabus. “The leadership programme included would be particularly good for other schools.”
