Couple return to Romania to help refugees after ‘miracle’ recovery Jessica PETERS Abbotsford News

Mark and Coreen Biech have had one foot in Abbotsford and another in Romania for most their lives. But right now, their hearts are entirely with Ukraine. The couple had been living in Romania for about 25 years when they came back to Abbotsford in 2020 for a visit with their three grown children, whom they adopted in the early ’90s from Eastern Europe. Mark also wanted to check in with his doctor for some neurological issues. It meant leaving behind their organization, Hope for the Nations, which “works to provide better life chances to children

affected by conflict, famine and poverty.” They had no idea the diagnosis that lay ahead, how the pandemic would affect everything, and that Eastern Europe would be so changed by the time they returned. “The pandemic came in like a mist creeping through the grass,” Mark said. Meanwhile, his condition deteriorated. He was quickly losing his balance, muscle strength and independence. At one point, he did not have the strength to lift a blanket off his own chest, and he began to lose his ability to talk. By the time the diagnosis came – early-onset aggressive Parkinson’s disease – he had been using a wheelchair for a year and a half.

Yet, doctors were able to get Mark on a medication that worked almost immediately. “Within a month I was walking, dressing, brushing my own teeth – amazing,” he said via email to The News. But as he worked to recover his strength, something terrible was happening in Eastern Europe. They were compelled to return as soon as possible. “Impossible! Can this actually be happening again? My Mennonite and German families had escaped the atrocities in Russia in the 1920s after the brutal murders of entire villages by the Bolsheviks. Most of my relatives who survived were able to get out and they immigrated to Canada,” Mark said. Mark and Coreen Biech, an Abbotsford couple who live in Romania, are helping to feed Ukrainians who have fled Continued on A3 the war. (Facebook)

Charges being considered against officer whose police dog injured suspect Independent Investigations Office has filed report with BC Prosecution Service Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

The province’s police watchdog says an officer might have committed an offence during a March 2021 incident in Abbotsford in which a man was injured by a police dog. The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) announced Thursday (April 13) that it has filed a report with the BC Prosecution Service for charges to be considered against the officer. The incident took place at approximately 8 p.m. on March 6, 2021, when police were investigating alleged property offences. They located in the 3700 block of Davie Street a man believed to be linked to the crimes. The IIO said a member of the Integrated

Lower Mainland Police Dog Service assisted in arresting the man, who received serious dog bites while being taken into custody. The man was taken to hospital for treatment. The IIO – which investigates officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death – was notified of the incident on April 12, 2021. Chief civilian director Ronald J. MacDonald reviewed the evidence from the IIO investigation and determined there were “reasonable grounds” to believe an offence might have taken place in relation to the use of a police service dog. In order to approve any charges, the BC Prosecution Service must be satisfied that there is a substantial likelihood of conviction and that The Independent Investigations Office of BC has filed a report with the BC Prosecution Service for consideration prosecution be required in the public interest. of charges against an officer whose police dog injured a suspect in Abbotsford. Couple providing hope amidst the devastation From A1 When the couple heard that Ukrainians were fleeing to Romania, they knew where they needed to be. But Mark wasn’t sure if he was physically ready. “Coreen said to me, ‘If you don’t push yourself to help others during a war, when will you push yourself ?’ That put a spark in my soul…” The family has faced struggles before. They adopted their children just after the revolution when Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu was assassinated. They lived in Abbotsford for a few years before returning to Romania as missionaries in 1998. When they returned to Canada on furlough four years later, their middle son was diagnosed with cancer. He had one year of treatment here and one in Romania, and is healthy today. Even while Coreen was Mark’s caretaker through his illness, she was juggling work with Hope for the Nations and travelling back and forth from Romania. When it was time for both of them to go, they raised funds with the help of Hope for the Nations, and made their way to the Black Sea region of Romania to meet their team. “While en route, we sent them

the green light to connect with up to 100 Ukrainian refugees who were being picked up by Romanian families at the border to be offered free accommodation,” Mark said. “Our initial plan was to purchase food and supplies for their urgent needs during this crazy time of trying to figure out what their next step would be.” However, they found that the families were isolating themselves and couldn’t read the Roman alphabet. They were down to using hand gestures to communicate with the refugees, mostly younger women with children, older mothers and grandmothers who were already feeling alone and vulnerable. “For the most part, they just want to curl up, lock the door, and wait to go home,” Mark said. The organization didn’t know what foods the refugees liked and couldn’t ask about allergies. Coreen realized they could use pre-paid grocery cards, which are now available in Romania. With the hard work of their medical coordinator, they had the cards ready and the families organized by the end of the week. “We organized days, times, and places to meet with over

100 Ukrainian refugees in parks where the children could play while we worked on the pre-paid grocery-card distribution,” he said. And that’s when the real magic happened. Ukrainians who had been isolated and afraid were connected with other Ukrainians. Mothers were able to share stories with each other, children were able to play. One girl who had looked so sad upon their first meeting was laughing and playing with another child her age. “There were many stories, many tears, hugs, and so much emotion,” Mark said. An older lady approached Coreen and in very broken English said, “I never, in all my life, thought there would be a day when I would be standing in a foreign country receiving such generous help from someone I don’t even know.” Their original goal was to find and help 100 refugees for at least three months, but their plans are expanding to include another 100. Their coalition partner is a Canadian registered charity and the campaign can be found at hopeforthenations.com. They are also active on YouTube and Facebook.

es, and community activism for rights and justice. As the exhibit travels, it will partner with local institutions and South Asian Canadian communities to add relevant local content with the goal of expanding the historic record. An outreach kit that educators, schools, and community centres can use to teach content from Haq and History is also available. B.C. schools and organizations can request a kit through the Royal BC Museum. Haq and History can be viewed in the atrium of the Surrey City Centre Library until June 30, 2022, before the exhibit makes its way across B.C. Ground-breaking research is captured in Union Zindabad!, which chronicles the history of South Asian Canadians’ involvement in the labour movement in partnership with the BC Labour Heritage Centre. The project also undertook documentation and further engagement of historic sites of significance across the province. As well, 19 authors came together to write chapters in A Social History of South Asians in British Columbia – a book that threads South Asian Canadian stories from 1897 to the present moment. A project at University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) has been launched to raise awareness and knowledge of the contributions and history of South Asian Canadians. The South Asian Canadian Legacy Project – through UFV’s South Asian Studies Institute in Abbotsford – is backed by a $1.14 million grant from the province with support from the Abbotsford Community Foundation. It is part of the government’s response to community consultations on racism and hate conducted in 2019. “The South Asian Canadian Legacy Project empowers British Columbians to discover, learn, research, and share the rich and robust histories of South Asian Canadians who helped build this beautiful province,” said Dr. Satwinder Kaur Bains, director at the UFV South Asian Studies Institute. The initiative includes Saffron Threads (saffronthreads.ca) — a new learning resource for B.C. teachers from kindergarten to Grade 12 that explores South Asian Canadian history, culture, and heritage. It includes detailed activity plans and resources, developed in partnership with Open School BC, that will help teachers bring important topics for all students into the classroom including migration and settlement,

City to receive almost $7M in flood funding Provincial government announces money for 10 flood-impacted communities Tom FLETCHER Black Press Media

The B.C. government announced a $53.6 million fund Thursday to start work to allow people to move back to communities devastated by last November’s floods and landslides. Abbotsford will receive $6.85 million of the funding, Mission will get $50,000, and the Fraser Valley Regional District will get $1.625 million. Municipal Affairs Minister Nathan Cullen said April 14 that the funds will assist 10 communities, including Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Mission, Hope, Princeton and Merritt, where the mayor said help is still needed for major works like bridges, dikes and flood control planning. Mayors from Abbotsford, Princeton and Merritt, along with representatives from 29 other flood-affected communities, met with B.C. Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth

of the flood-damaged Sumas Prairie in Abbotsford. “Everyone in the room basically said the same thing, and that is that the money needs to come faster and the system needs to be more efficient,” Princeton Mayor Spencer Coyne told the Similkameen Spotlight after the meeting. During a week when Trudeau and federal cabinet ministers were in B.C., Coyne, Abbotsford Mayor Henry Braun and Merritt Mayor Linda Brown joined others honoured as community heroes, taking part in a ceremonial puck-drop at a Vancouver Canucks game. Brown said temporary housing is a high priority, to allow people to move back in and provide housing for construction workers needed for Princeton Mayor Spencer Coyne (reflective vest) consoles a resident as he and Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth tour the rebuilding water, sewer and other flood-damaged community, Dec. 3, 2021. City Prayer Breakfast honours first responders Event held April 13 for first time in two years, with more than 250 guests The 31st annual Abbotsford City Prayer Breakfast was held last Wednesday (April 13) to honour first responders, Mayor Henry Braun and others. The event was held at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Centre and welcomed representatives from the Abbotsford Police Department, Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service (AFRS), BC Ambulance, the Abbotsford board of education and city council. Almost 250 guests attended in person after a two-year break from the event. Presented by MEI Schools, the event highlighted four prayers for community leaders. Guests prayed for the mayor and council, first responders, school trustees and independent schools.

This year a new prayer was added for community partners and agencies looking after the most vulnerable groups in the city, including the homeless. “The energy in the room was great and you could tell people were so excited to see each other again, especially after the year we’ve had,” said Andy Kwak, event chair and AFRS chaplain. “Our goal was to inspire and uplift our community leaders, and we believe we accomplished that.” Attendees enjoyed a plated breakfast and a musical performance from Juno Award winner Brian Doerksen and his father Harry Doerksen. Keynote speaker Andy Steiger spoke about humanity and how to consider community. Braun was acknowledged and

commended by MC Ezra Okoti from Northview Community Church as well as other speakers throughout the morning. In his closing remarks, Braun thanked and encouraged the community and organizations represented in the ballroom. “We are all created on purpose and for a purpose,” he said. Photos from the event can be found on the Abbotsford Christian Leaders Network (ACLN) Facebook page. ACLN is an affiliation of Christian leaders representing a broad range of churches, non-profit organizations, educational and government institutions, and businesses. Its aim is to encourage the organizations to work together and to support community needs.

Canada’s two-headed climate policy Does the Liberal government have a policy on climate change, really? Not judging by their actions. This week, you can drive through northern Langley and spot the construction sites for the Trans Mountain Pipeline expansion project. This project was despised by environmentalists, because any increase in access to Canada’s oil patch naturally means more carbon dioxide being flung into our already overloaded atmosphere. The pipeline, however, means jobs and tax revenues, and as such it is so beloved of the federal government that Prime Minster Justin Trudeau’s government actually bought it as Kinder Morgan ran into difficulties with the project On the other coast, this government has also approved the Bay du Nord oil project, which has all the same issues – jobs versus climate. The present versus the future, essentially. Meanwhile, the federal budget unveiled last week is all about fighting climate change,

somehow. There is a great deal of money and policy aimed at decarbonizing Canada’s industry, encouraging carbon capture from the existing oil industry, and boosting sales of electric vehicles. The government needs to make up its mind whether it is for or against global climate change. (Hint: against is the correct position.) The Earth’s atmosphere is that not a localized phenomenon. It’s a shared resource. We have the same atmosphere as Albania and Burundi and China and on down the whole alphabet of nations. If we decarbonize at home, and we have the cleanest oil industry in the world, and we all drive electric cars and heat and light our homes with solar and wind and hydro, we’ll still face rising seas and scorching summers, in part thanks to our exporting oil for other people to burn. The government needs to pick a side – short term, or long?

Prom planning can move ahead as usual, superintendent says

Year-end celebrations may not be impacted by COVID-19 for the first time since 2019 Jessica PETERS Abbotsford News

The pandemic has eased off enough that planning is moving full steam ahead for Abbotsford’s prom and other year-end festivities. Superintendent Kevin Godden gave a rundown of COVID-19 effects within the school district at the April 12 board meeting. He said planning for prom can move head “as we did pre-pandemic.” The graduating classes of 2020 and 2021 both had their celebrations curtailed by pandemic restrictions. But nobody is out of the woods yet. He also noted that at a conference in Ottawa earlier this month, he was made aware that some districts in Ontario are seeing a rise again in absenteeism. And absenteeism is exactly how school districts can catch onto an outbreak in real time, Godden noted. “That’s one activity signal we continue to pay attention to,” he said. If attendance drops more than 25 per cent over a five-day average, or if they experience a 50 per cent drop in attendance in a single day, the district will then be back in conversations with Fraser Health about next steps. “Fraser Health is still available to us,” he assured the

Prom and other year-end celebrations could be back to pre-pandemic normals for this year’s graduating classes in B.C. (Pixabay photo) board. He said the numbers are available to the district staff daily, and there is a discussion among senior staff weekly. There are different reasons for absences, though, Godden added. There are students and staff who are sick and can’t attend, but there are also those who fearful to attend, and those who are being “hyper cautious” because they are feeling symptomatic. “We are investigating higher-than-normal absenteeism in our high schools,” he said, and they are finding that high school students feel they can keep up easily when feeling too

sick to attend because teachers are now using Google classrooms. “This is something we are continually keeping an eye on,” he added. “We need the school to be a safe place to learn, but we also need to identify an outbreak.” The easing of pandemic restrictions also means the Abbotsford board of education is back to meeting in person at the board office. The videos of the meetings are still available to view on YouTube. However, there were audio and visual issues in the first 10 minutes of the April 12 meeting due to one trustee phoning in to the meeting via conference call.

Harvesters concerned with plan to spray glyphosate on forests around Chilliwack and Hope

Thursday, April 21, 2022 A11

Making you happy is our first priority. And our second. And third.

Muriel Victor among those concerned with herbicide application in local forests Jessica PETERS Abbotsford News

When Indigenous health care provider Muriel Victor was a young child, she was brought along with the adults to harvest from the forest. Wild berries, flowers, roots, bark and plants that some people consider weeds — all were gathered up through different seasons and turned into food and medicine to be shared among the community. Victor, a Sto:ló elder from Cheam First Nation whose traditional name is Konisiya, says harvesting the forest and land is about even more than feeding and healing. It’s just a part of who she is. “It’s a feeling,” she says, when she walks the land to gather a harvest. “We do it every year. It’s a part of us and I was taught this from a little girl.” The news that glyphosate is still being used in forests that are harvested by Indigenous people, from Squamish to Hope, causes her concern. She relies on her niece, a fellow certified herbalist Carrielynn Victor, to keep her up to date on spraying information. “It’s been kind of a long-time concern,” she says. But the areas that are sprayed aren’t well-published or well-marked by officials, and the newest five-year pest management plan that outlines the use of glyphosate states that sprayed areas are unsuitable for cultural uses for two to four years. “Carrielynn will say, ‘Don’t go here or there, it’s sprayed.’ Otherwise, how am I supposed to know?” she says.

“We don’t need any more contaminants than we are already living with. Why are we doing this to our environments?” She was once the health care manager at Cheam, and is now the traditional wellness director for the Chilliwack Division of Family Practice. As such, she works with patients and physicians to bring together the best in Indigenous healing and Western medicine. That means working with naturally found flora like Oregon grape, elderberry berries and their flowers; maple flower, mullein; thimble berry; cedar bark; and so much more. “If the medical system isn’t working for them, we can try traditional ways,” she said, and often with success. “And that’s what I do here. To get both worlds to work with each other in a good way.” It would be “crushing” to her to lose the ability to safely harvest the land, she said. “And that’s my right,” she said. “That makes me feel good, to go out on the land and harvest.” It’s something that brings her back to her childhood, and does the same for the elders in her life. “Whenever I’m feeling down, even if I don’t harvest anything, I’ll see what I can find,” she said. “It’s uplifting. I feel it helps me and my spirit, and the goal is to bring back a nice harvest.” And then when she gets home, she says, she is kept busy working with her hands, ensuring the harvest is preserved for those who will need it. “That’s the feeling, and then to wipe

that away,” she says, her words drifting off. Jam-making from berries in the wild is also a rite of passage for young Indigenous children, and something that is carried on through generations. “I was told we do this because this is who we are,” she said. And despite not being a jam eater herself, as a part of the community she still harvests berries and makes her own jam. She uses it as gifts in ceremony, and gives to those who need it. She said the younger generations of Sto:ló people are picking up on harvesting and making it their own, by making items like fruit leather, for example. For example, while fruit leather is a traditional food, it’s one that has been commercialized and is being made traditionally once again. But with aerial glyphosate spraying, many feel that way of life is endangered. The time for public comment on the pest management plan, through BC Timber Sales in Chilliwack, is now over. Many were pleading with the government to extend the feedback period to allow more harvesters of the land to review it. But Victor doesn’t hold out a lot of hope that their voices will be heard, saying that she’s used to hearing “broken promises” when it comes to forest management. The area within the plan covers Sto:ló, St’át’imc, Nlaka’pamux, Squamish, and Tsleil Waututh territories. Forestry minister Katrine Conroy has not responded to two requests to comment on the plan.

Correction An article in the April 14th edition of The Abbotsford News about John Redekop’s latest book inaccurately attributed to him the statement that his book “reads like a novel but is a true story.” That statement was made in a review by Peter Nikkel. Also, the $13 million mentioned in the article was not raised to purchase Stillwood Camp and Conference Centre but for redevelopment and expansion more than 40 years later.

The City of Abbotsford says the level of the Fraser River is slightly above normal for this time of year, and residents in areas along the Matsqui dikes could experience water pooling or seepage. The snow basin index at Hope is at 108 per cent as of Thursday afternoon (April 14), the city said in a press release. The city monitors the levels of the Fraser River during the annual snowmelt season to assess the flooding risk along the dikes. The Matsqui dikes are designed to prevent water in the Fraser River from entering onto Matsqui Prairie, but “the pressure difference created by the high water level” could result in pooling, the release states. “Seasonal weather during the snowmelt season is a critical factor in determining the size of freshet, and whether or not flooding will occur. Intense or prolonged rainfall and extreme temperatures are important factors that can lead to larger freshets,” the city says.

N

K

To minimize the seepage pooling and/or a boil on local properties, the city advises avoiding the following activities from May to September near the dikes: • the removal of trees or stumps; • deep cultivation of fields; and • digging holes with machines. To view the areas where seepage pools were found during previous freshet seasons, visit abbotsford.ca/city-services/dyking-drainage or make an in-person appointment at the engineering department at city hall for a hard copy. For more information on the snow survey and freshet season, visit the province’s River Forecast Centre website. For real-time river level information at the Mission Bridge (Station 08MH024), visit wateroffice.ec.gc.ca. To report water pooling on a property or to get information on the freshet season, contact the City of Abbotsford’s dyking, drainage and irrigation division at 604-853-5485.

Two organizations in the eastern Fraser Valley have been given $5,000 grants to help tackle discrimination and racism. The Reach Gallery Museum in Abbotsford and the Kara-Kata Afrobeat Society of Canada in Mission were among the 60 groups awarded B.C. Multiculturalism Grants, announced by the province April 8. The Reach’s grant is for a project called Anti-Black racism, Mental Health and the Fraser Valley, which comprises “three events supporting the mental health of the growing Black community in Abbotsford and across the Fraser Valley.” Kara-Kara is conducting an African-Canadian Community Needs Assessment. They will be “gathering African community members from around the Lower Mainland (in person) and around Canada (virtually) to assess the top needs and desires of the community to create economic opportunity, empowerment and camaraderie.” “Over the past two years, we’ve seen a staggering increase in racism and hate incidents in

The provincial government has given small grants to community organizations for anti-racism projects, and will be announcing new legislation in spring 2022. (Unsplash) B.C.,” said Rachna Singh, Parliamentary Secretary for Anti-Racism Initiatives. “These grants are one of many steps in our fight against racism, helping organizations on the ground address systemic racism. This is important work, and I am grateful to everyone stepping up to build anti-racist workplaces and communities.” The grants were given to community-based organizations for “projects that build intercultural interaction, trust and understanding, or challenge racism, hate and systemic barriers.” “People of African ancestry are typically categorized as one group and treated as a monolith, obscuring the vast diversity in their histories, iden-

tities, journeys and experiences,” said Silvia Mangue Alene, president, BC Black History Awareness Society. She said the funding builds on ‘Worlds Within: Diverse Histories, Identities, and Experiences of Black People of African Ancestry in British Columbia,’ a report of the African Ancestry Project released in March 2022, “to add a youth-focused component about the rich heritage and diverse cultural identities of Black people in B.C. Connecting with young people is key to building self-esteem and challenging the stereotypes that promote anti-Black racism.” The province says anti-racism data legislation is being announced this spring.

A new Supreme Court of B.C. master has been appointed in Abbotsford. The appointment of Rory Krentz was effective April 8. He now joins a total of 15 Supreme Court masters throughout the province. Masters preside in civil chambers and registrar hearings, making decisions about pre-trial motions and procedural orders. Krentz received a bachelor of laws degree from the University of British Columbia in 1982. His practice includes civil litigation, family law, criminal law, federal Crown prosecutions, real estate transactions and more. A provincial government press release states that he has an “immense knowledge” of the rules of the court, having been retained by clients to represent them at all levels of court. Krentz also has experience in family law mediation and previously worked with the provincial government on child protection cases. He remains active in bar association matters, including previously serving as an elected member of the Canadian Bar Association’s B.C. branch.

Lawyer Rory Kretnz has been appointed a Supreme Court master in Abbotsford. Masters are selected after lawyers submit applications, which are reviewed by an ad hoc committee made up of B.C.’s deputy attorney general, a justice of the Supreme Court of B.C., a representative of the Law Society of British Columbia and a representative of the Canadian Bar Association’s B.C. branch. Following consultation with the chief justice, the attorney general makes a recommendation to cabinet, which makes appointments through an order in council.

The smallest of Abbotsford Regional Hospital’s patients need a little help in the pyjama department. Babies staying in the neonatal intensive care unit there are often too small for the hospital-issued clothing. So the Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation is gathering up new onesies to create a supply when needed. The call is out for simple onesies and sleepers for preemies, newborns and babies up to three months old. The hospital could also use some for sizes up to 24 months. They say while they aren’t picky about colours and patterns, they must be button-up style, and they must be new. Zippers are not “user-friendly” for the hospital setting. Anyone who can help is asked to contact the health care foundation, which will coordinate the delivery. Email them at info@fvhcf.ca, call 604-851-4890 or stop by their office in Abbots-

COMMUNITY NOTICE ANNUAL VEGETATION MANAGEMENT PROGRAM Every year, CN is required to clear its right-of-way of any vegetation that may pose a safety hazard. Vegetation on railway right-of-way, if left uncontrolled, can contribute to trackside fires and impair proper inspection of track infrastructure. For safe railway operations, CN will conduct its annual vegetation control program on its rail lines in the province of British Columbia. A certified professional will be applying herbicides on and around the railway tracks (primarily along the 16 – 24 feet graveled area/ ballast). All product requirements for setbacks in the vicinity of dwellings, aquatic environments, and municipal water supplies will be met. The program is expected to take place from April to October 2022. DON’T MISS A DOSE If you have a number of prescriptions to keep track of, it can be confusing, but your Co-op pharmacist is here to help! What is compliance packaging and how does it work? Compliance packaging refers to packaging medication in organized blister cards.

The BC Classic and Custom Car Show was held at Tradex in Abbotsford from Friday to Sunday (April 15 to 17), featuring more than 250 vehicles on display indoors. (PHOTOS BY JOHN MORROW)

Simply punch out the medication from the blister when that dose is due. The packages are typically dispensed in four- or five-week sets. Each card is labelled with either a description or picture of each medication so you will always know what medications you are taking. What medications can be included in the compliance packs? Most medications can be included whether they’re prescription or over-the-counter medication. There are a few medications that must be dispensed in their original packaging, but your pharmacist will tell you if this is the case. Who is compliance packaging for? Anyone who would like peace of mind about their medication should consider compliance packaging. It can help tremendously with

clarifying confusing instructions and medication adherence. Compliance packaging can help you avoid missing doses of important medications and offer reassurance that you have taken your doses if you forget later, especially if you have multiple medications to take at different times throughout the day. If you choose this option, it also allows you to pick up all your medications at the pharmacy once per month instead of multiple times. Are there a certain number of prescriptions I need to have before I can access compliance packaging? There is not a minimum number! Pharmacies have blister packed anywhere between one and twenty medications. Are there additional costs to having medication compliance packaged? Typically, there are not additional costs associated with the actual packaging of the medication. However, the medications packaged will be filled every month as opposed to situations when medication is filled every two or three months.

2022 Driving habits that could help the planet Increased awareness of climate change and its effects could be the catalyst many people need to make positive, planet-friendly changes to their daily routines. Driving habits are one area where individuals can alter their daily routines in ways that benefit the planet. These eco-friendly alterations can be instituted each day by individuals who want to do their part to combat climate change.

• Avoid aggressive driving. Aggressive driving is both a safety risk and a threat to the environment. According to the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, aggressive driving can lower gas mileage in light-duty vehicles by as much as 40 percent in stop-and-go traffic and by as much as 30 percent at highway speeds. • Avoid idling. Many drivers have long relied on idling to warm up

A far more effective, and considerably less harmful, way to warm up a vehicle is to do so for 30 seconds and then drive slowly for the first few minutes. • Purchase a fuel-efficient vehicle. Nature club opens new homes for bats Volunteers set up maternity bat ‘condos’ and roosting box at Willband Creek Park Up to eight species of bats that fly the night skies over Willband Creek Park in Abbotsford will start this spring with new family accommodations, thanks to a local naturalists’ club. Volunteers from the Abbotsford-Mission Nature Club (AMNC) recently set up two back -to-back maternity bat “condos” and one roosting box at the wetlands park on Bateman Road, with funding support from B.C. Nature and B.C. Naturalists Foundation. The project began in 2019, when the club invited Aimee Mitchell of the BC Bat Community to assess what bats might live at Willband Creek Park, said Hank Roos, past president of the AMNC. Using acoustic recordings and sightings, Mitchell identified eight species that use or reside in the park, including the western long-eared Myotis, little brown myotis, silver-haired bat, hoary bat and others. Willband’s grassy wetlands provide ideal bat habitat, with access to fresh water and plenty of insects; the nocturnal mammals can consume their weight in flying insects (including mosquitoes) every night. While bats roost in crevices in cottonwoods, rock faces and buildings,

brooding mothers of some species gather in maternal colonies with their pups until late summer. Based on advice from Mitchell and their own research, the club chose two styles of boxes to accommodate various species. “With increasingly hot summer temperatures in mind, the bat houses include ventilation and passages

This is one of many habitat enhancement projects the AMNC has undertaken at Willband Creek Park. Since 1994, the club has planted thousands of trees and shrubs; installed nest boxes for swallows, wood ducks, and barn owls; erected an osprey nest tower; and in 2017, planned and built the viewing platform with a $90,000 Federated Co-Op grant from

inside to allow the bat mothers to move around to find relief from the summer heat,” Roos said. To help identify who has moved in, environmental studies students from the University of the Fraser Valley will collect bat guano from the site for lab analysis to confirm species and to monitor health and other factors.

their Community Spaces Program. The club works closely with the City of Abbotsford, funders, students, and other groups. The AMNC meets the second Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. often with guests speaking on a range of nature topics. Visit abbymissionnatureclub.ca for more information.

History of the Day of Mourning Canada was the first nation to recognize Day of Mourning Every year, on April 28, workers, families, employers remember those who have lost their lives or have been injured or suffered an illness on the job. It’s also a day to renew our commitment to creating safer workplaces. The Canadian Labour Congress first recognized the Day of Mourning in 1984 and in 1991 it became a national observance with the passing of the Workers Mourning Day Act, and on April 28, 1991 the federal government officially proclaimed the national Day of Mourning. Canada was the first nation to recognize Day of Mourning and since that time acknowl-

edgement of the day has grown to include many countries and now is recognized throughout the world. Since 1997, the BC Federation of Labour, the Business Council of British Columbia and WorkSafeBC have co-hosted a public commemorative ceremony for the Day of Mourning, in Vancouver. In 2001 a permanent workers’ memorial was dedicated in the Sanctuary in Hastings Park, Vancouver. There are approximately 45 permanent worker memorial sites sponsored by WorkSafeBC in B.C. In 2020, 151 B.C. workers died from a workplace injury or disease. There were 63 fa-

talities due to traumatic injury and 88 fatalities due to occupational disease. Of the 88, 51 were the result of exposure to asbestos, with many exposures happening decades earlier. Visit dayofmourning.bc.ca for a complete list of ceremonies or visit the website on Thursday April 28 at 10:30am for a message from partner organizations and a moment of silence. Every injury, disease or death reminds employers the importance and responsibility to ensure all workplaces in B.C. are healthy and safe. Sources: Day of Mourning (dayofmourning.ca)

A pair of Abbotsford hockey products have been named to Canada’s Men’s Under-18 Team for the 2022 IIHF U18 World Championship, which runs from April 23 to May 1 in Germany. Abbotsford talents Brayden Schuurman and Grayden Siepmann have both been added to the 25-player roster. Schuurman, a forward with the Western Hockey League’s Victoria Royals, is having an excellent sophomore season in the WHL and has collected 54 points in 68 games. He was second on the Royals in team scoring and was named the WHL’s player of the week for the week ending on Oct. 10. Schuurman and the Royals failed to qualify for the WHL playoffs. The Yale Hockey Academy and Abbotsford Minor Hockey Association product was a fourth round (69th overall) selection of the Royals in the 2019 WHL Draft. He was ranked 58th in NHL Central Scouting’s midterm rankings of the top 2022 draft eligible North American skaters. Siepmann, a defenceman with the WHL’s Calgary Hitmen, collected 25 points in 66 games in 2021-22. He led all Hitmen defence-

man in scoring and recorded eight power play points. Like the Royals, the Hitmen failed to qualify for the WHL playoffs. The Klassen Foundation Golf Classic is scheduled to make its debut on Thursday, June 2 at Abbotsford’s Ledgeview Golf and Country Club. All proceeds from the event will go to local charities and this year’s feature charity is the Indian Residential School Survivors Society. The event was announced through a press release on April 12. The Klassen family has been operating in Abbotsford since 1963 when they launched their own business, a trucking company called Valley Pulp and Sawdust Carriers. The family, now led by the third generation of locals, started the Klassen Foundation in 2013 to continue what they stated is a legacy of giving inspired by the vision of their grandparents. The Klassen Business Group is comprised of Valley Carriers, Klassen Landscape Supply and Nursery, VitaTerra Soil amd Mulch Products, Superior Peat and Just Mulch. A portion of the company’s profits has always been allocated to supporting local organizations and organizers state that the tournament will build

on the support they have provided to many organizations year after year. The mission statement of the IRSSS is to strive to provide physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual growth, development, and healing through culturally-based values and guiding principles for survivors, families and communities. The mandate of the IRSSS is to assist First Nation peoples in British Columbia to recognize and be holistically empowered from the primary and generational effect of the residential schools by supporting research, education, awareness, partnerships, and advocating for justice and healing. The society assists survivors with counselling, court support, information, referrals, workshops, and more. “We are excited to be hosting the Klassen Foundation Golf Classic for our community and invite our neighbours to come out and support this great event,” organizers stated in the press release. “Join us in supporting some amazing local organizations and the incredible work that they do, plus enjoy a day of socializing, networking and fun.” For more information, visit klassenfoundation.com/golf-classic.

Abbotsford Peer Support for Seniors Abbotsford Peer Support for Seniors (APSS) is a seniors’ volunteer organization that has been in operation since 1992. APSS is registered with Revenue Canada Agency as a charitable organization. The trained volunteers of APSS are ready to help seniors in Abbotsford believing that every senior has the right to live a full, independent, dignified life. Over the past 28 years, several hundreds of our trained volunteers have served over one thousand seniors in Abbotsford. Our Board of Directors consists of trained volunteers with years of experience in one-on-one peer support service. Our organization is funded by a Gaming Grant from the BC Government. We offer three free services; One-to-One Peer Support Program, the Good Morning Program and the Keep-inTouch program. Our One-to-One Peer Support Program has trained volunteers provide listening and emotional support at a pre-arranged time to seniors in their home. This gives them consistent social contact and information on community resources.

Our Good Morning Program provides interested seniors a morning telephone call to check on their wellbeing, helping them to maintain their independence. Our Keep-in-Touch Program offers the occasional check-in by the APSS Volunteer Coordinator to a few clients who aren’t in need of consistent contact. We offer a training program to our volunteers by certified facilitators. After training and a police criminal record check, a Peer Support volunteer is matched with a senior and work in cooperation with the coordinator. We also offer workshops regularly throughout the year to ensure our volunteers are equipped with the latest information and new skills, which they can pass along to their clients. We are looking for volunteers to work with seniors. Or, you may know a senior who could benefit from getting to know a volunteer. For more information, call us at 604-300-1457 or email apss.seniors@telus.net for more information. We look forward to hearing from you!

The Abbotsford Canucks are the hottest team in the American Hockey League at the perfect time. The Canucks picked up wins on Friday (April 15) and Saturday (April 16) to run their current win streak to six games. Abbotsford took down the San Jose Barracuda 4-3 in overtime on Friday and then picked up a huge 3-1 win over the Bakersfield Condors - the team they are battling in the standings for home ice in the playoffs. Friday saw a trio of returns pay off for the club, as Justin Dowling, Sheldon Rempal and Justin Bailey were back in action and they all contributed to the win. Dowling scored twice, including the game winner, Rempal had one goal and one assist and Bailey set up the overtime goal. Defenceman Devante Stephens also had a big goal in the third period to momentarily put Abbotsford up 3-2 in the third. The Barracuda attacked in the first period, with one power play and one shorthanded goal from Lane Pederson. But the second period was all Abbotsford, with Dowling and Rempal both tallying on the power play. Stephens put the Canucks up

(Abbotsford Canucks photo) 3-2 at 2:53 of the third, but San Jose’s Kyle Topping tied the game up at 12:16 and it went to the extra frame. The winning goal saw Bailey use his speed and carry the puck to open ice and Dowling tipping his shot on goal. Spencer Martin made 22 saves for his 19th win on the year and Rempal led all skaters with six shots. Saturday saw the Canucks get an otherworldly performance from goalie Michael DiPietro and timely goals to score the big road win. DiPietro made 37 saves and put

in likely his best performance of the season at a time when the Canucks needed it most. After some struggles early this season and being outshined by Spencer Martin, DiPietro has won his last three starts and his record is now over .500 for the first time as an Abbotsford Canuck. The Condors were arguably the better team for most of the game, outshooting the Canucks 38-20 and opening the scoring at 4:57 when Yanni Kaldis fooled DiPietro on a screened shot. But two early chances, including a shorthanded breakaway by Luke Esposito, were stymied by DiPietro.

The Canucks managed to tie the game at 18:06 when Sheldon Rempal dialed a long distance pass to Justin Bailey who put his 11th goal past Condors goalie Stuart Skinner. Abbotsford got lucky in the second period when Brandon Cutler pushed the puck forward and it bounced around the Condors defenders and gave him some room to work. Matt Alfaro jumped on the free puck after his shot and made it 2-1 at 16:20 of the second period. Chase Wouters added an empty net goal at 18:52 of the third to seal the deal. Rempal had a twopoint night and led all Canucks with four shots on goal. Saturday was a big win for the Canucks, who entered the game tied with the Condors for fourth in the AHL’s Pacific Division. The win puts them two points up on Bakersfield and That placement is important because the second, third and fourth place teams receive home ice advantage in round one of the AHL’s best-of-three playoff series (first place gets a bye). Abbotsford’s record now sits at 36-21-5-1 and the team will remain in California to take on the San Diego Gulls on Wednesday (after press deadline). They close out the road trip on Friday (April 22) against the Stockton Heat.

ELEL^EPHMb Bh_EU MEV Place your condolences online. (Visit your local newspaper website, obituary page) Marianne Wiebe (nee Flore)

Patricia Frances Hougen Celebration of Life April 30, 2022 from 2-4 Calvin Presbyterian Church 33911 Hazelwood Avenue, Abbotsford

With the peace in knowing she is free and in the presence of her Lord, we announce the sudden passing of our treasured mom on March 25, 2022. A first generation Canadian, Marianne was born in Abbotsford on March 8, 1960. Her two daughters were her everything and she felt blessed to be a full time mom, enjoying her relationships with them into their adulthood. Friends and strangers alike were drawn to her warm nature, leading to engaging conversations everywhere she went. She faced all of life’s challenges, including her diagnosis of primary progressive MS, with quiet resilience, a humble strength and fierce determination. After suffering a silent heart attack, she spent her last few days receiving amazing care in the ICU; however her loving heart had given all it could.

Marie Anna (née Hubeli) Howell With deep sadness, the family of Marie Anna (née Hubeli) Howell announce her peaceful passing at AGH, April 3, 2022. Beloved wife, mom, grandmother, greatgrandmother, aunt and friend of many, she will greatly missed. Marie was born May 15/30, in Wpg. MB. She lived with her parents, Walter and Marie Hubeli and siblings, Raymond and Richard, on their farm in Plumas, Manitoba. She met her husband John Howell through a mutual friend and they married on May 14, 1955. Marie worked in nursing until she retired. She focused on patient care and kindness and enjoyed working with seniors. Marie volunteered at the Red Cross loan cupboard for 20 years. She had great fondness for children, seniors, family pets and loved listening to music. She enjoyed oil painting and lived by a deep quiet faith. Marie is survived by her husband John, and 5 of her 6 children, James Howell, Catherine (Wes) Peters, Terri Porter, John Howell and Loretta (Greg) Hilton. She was predeceased by her son, Tom Howell, daughter in law Kim Howell, and son in law Earl Porter. She was deeply loved by her 8 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. The family of Marie Anna Howell thanks the staff and doctors at AGH for the loving care they showed Marie and her family. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Alzheimer’s Society would be appreciated.

She is predeceased by her parents, Peter & Helen and her eldest brother Pete. She will be lovingly remembered by daughters Nicole & Kathleen, and her brother Fred (Lana) along with their 3 children and families.

Edwin Jacob Krause May 29, 1930 - April 7, 2022 Ed passed away to his heavenly home on April 7, 2022 at ARH after struggles related to Parkinson’s Disease. He was born to Jacob C. and Maria (Rempel) in Yarrow, BC where he lived throughout his childhood. He wed Mary Fast in 1952. Ed’s 35 year teaching career, including many years as the principal of Bradner Elementary School, took them to Vancouver, Langley and Penticton before settling in Abbotsford in 1958. Ed enjoyed many good retirement years loving the outdoors taking canoe trips, hiking, fishing and jogging. He was also a committed volunteer at MCC furniture store for many years.

DUGUID, David John David was born in Brandon, Manitoba to Charles and Louisa (Hillman) Duguid and passed away in Abbotsford. The oldest of four children, David relayed many happy memories of his childhood growing up in Brandon. As a young man he rode a freight train heading west after working in several different areas he settled in Kitimat working for Alcan Aluminum Corporation where he retired after 38 years. It was in Kitimat that he met and married Monique Gaudreau, his wife of 63 years. David and Monique enjoyed traveling and spent many years wintering in Mexico. After retirement David and Monique moved to Abbotsford to be closer to family. For many years David was a proud member of the GIZEN Shriners of British Columbia & Yukon, one of his greatest joys was visiting children at Shriner Hospitals. Dave will be greatly missed by Monique as well as many friends and his extended family.

Look for me in Rainbows Time for me to go now, I won't say goodbye; Look for me in rainbows, way up in the sky. In the morning sunrise when all the world is new, Just look for me and love me, as you know I loved you. Time for me to leave you, I won't say goodbye; Look for me in rainbows, high up in the sky. In the evening sunset, when all the world is through, Just look for me and love me, and I'll be close to you.

He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife, Mary; children Richard (Susan), Carol (Bruce) and Gary (Lorna); and sisters Betty Voth, Joan Braun and brother Bert (Elsie). He also leaves 6 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by his parents, brother Karl and sisters Melita Peters, Mary Hamm and Naomi Giesbrecht.

It won't be forever, the day will come and then My loving arms will hold you, when we meet again. Time for us to part now, we won't say goodbye; Look for me in rainbows, shining in the sky. Every waking moment, and all your whole life through Just look for me and love me, as you know I loved you.

A private family celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Just wish me to be near you, And I'll be there with you.

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION NOTICE Application for a(n) Approval Under The Provisions of the Environmental Management Act We, Westcoast Energy Inc., doing business as Enbridge (Westcoast), 200, 425 - 1st Street S.W, Calgary, Alberta, intend to submit this application to the Director to authorize the discharge of groundwater from a construction site. The source of discharge will be dewatering of groundwater from the construction site using a sand point well system. The land upon which the dewatering will be situated, and the discharge will occur is located near 2502 Marion Rd., Abbotsford, BC, within the Fraser Valley Regional District. The maximum rate of groundwater discharge from the construction site, via the sandpoint well system, will be 1,200 m3/hr. The drainages will be monitored during water discharge to ensure water levels do not negatively affect neighbouring landowner or the receiving environment. The operating period for this construction dewatering will be 24 hours per day for the duration of construction activities, which will occur over approximately a 75-day period beginning in July and ending in September. The characteristics of the groundwater discharge will be similar to that found in surrounding groundwater within the regional district and at times may have naturally high levels of total and dissolved iron. The type(s) of treatment to be applied to the discharge is/are: • Added setback from receiving drainages to promote the aeration of the groundwater and natural attenuation of iron. • Testing to ensure that BC Approved Water Quality Guidelines: Aquatic Life, Wildlife & Agriculture or background conditions are adhered to. • Incorporating chemical treatment and filtration, if determined to be feasible Any person who may be adversely affected by the proposed discharge of waste and wishes to provide relevant information may, within 30 days after the last date of posting, publishing, service or display, send written comments to the applicant, with a copy to the Regional Director, Environmental Protection at B.C Oil & Gas Commission at Bag 2, Fort St. John, BC, V1J 2B0.
