Baby Archer had his own ideas about entering the world on New Year’s Day, just in time to meet his grandmother who passed away one day later at Ridge Meadows Hospital.

Archer Reid was born at 4:50 a.m. on Jan. 1 – the first baby to be born at the hospital in the new year.

His parents, Sarah and Garrett Reid, were thrilled, not only to welcome their new bundle of joy, who was 53 cm long and weighed 3.5 kg, (7 lbs, 6 oz), but also because hospital staff Sarah and Archer Reid allowed them to don scrubs and bring Archer to the intensive care unit on the third floor of the hospital where his grandmother, Carole Reid, had been battling Stage 4 breast cancer.

An increase in assessment does

The annual assessments are an important document for both owners and local governments, as they’re used to calculate property tax rates.

Money raised from the local firefighter campaign will be used to provide essential equipment to those impacted by a neuromuscular disorder to improve their quality of life.

It will also be used to cover medical travel expenses, respite care, and adapted recreation programs through their Community Services Fund, in addition to finding a cure.

CP said the project will provide 150-250 direct jobs, and more during construction.

It will also add approximately $1 million to the property taxes the railway pays the city, bringing the total to $4.1 million annually.

CP also lists reducing the amount of truck traffic on the roads, supporting Canadian trade, and boosting the economy among the benefits.

There is a petition against the expansion at change.org, which has already received more than 1,300 signatures.

There is also a new petition registered with the House of Commons that has 378 signatures.

CP said public consultation will continue through the coming year.

ast month, the federal Liberal government released its long-awaited detailed plan for fighting climate change.

Hardly anyone noticed.

With a vaccine finally arriving, COVID-19 still spreading, and, oh yeah, Christmas mixed in there, it was hard to get people excited about a 79-page document filled with arcane details about energy-efficient renovations and car charging stations.

But if the measures in this plan are put into place, it will transform Canada.

The response to the plan from environmentalists was generally positive, the federal Conservatives groused about it killing the economy, and doubtless, as with all plans this large, there will be some firms found on the losing end.

But in general, the plan seems sensible and aimed at growing Canadian industries and jobs. There’s a huge focus on energy-efficient retrofits of everything from homes to industrial workplaces to hospitals to schools. We’ll see subsidies for electric cars, but also programs to buy thousands of electric buses. The use of coal for power is to end in a decade.

Doubtless some elements of the plan will change as it runs headlong into reality. But the broad strokes are surprisingly ambitious for the Liberals.

The plan is long overdue. The Liberals should have done this in 2015. The Conservatives should have done it in the mid-2000s. The previous Liberal government should have done it in the 1990s, and so on.

The benefits of a carbon-neutral economy will include doing our part to slow and stop climate change. But they will also include cleaner skies and fewer lung cancers. We ought to have done it years ago.

Here’s hoping the Liberals stick to their guns, and deliver on once-in-a-generation change.

Wrong time for tax hike Dear Editor, [RE: Maple Ridge council approves 3.6 per cent tax increase, Dec. 16, The News] Another hike in our taxes from our elected officials at city hall.

I am not surprised, but I am disappointed.

As usual, development is at the forefront of this council (Yennadon Lands – if that goes ahead… shame on you).

For once, I agree with Councillor [Gordy] Robson, whose position is that council should give taxpayers a break during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Further on in the article, our mayor is quoted as saying, in response: “I get a lot more complaints about demands on growth and doing that correctly, than I do about our taxes.”

Excuse me?

Because you get “less” complaints you think it is OK to go ahead with yet another increase?

Increasing panhandling, property thefts, homeless and/or drug user garbage strewn everywhere,

Let’s get better street lights to light up our neighbourhoods.

Do something with the Albion Flats. Finally. Bike trails, or habitat protection? And the often discussed, but never really worked on… path along the Fraser.

I’d like my taxes paying for things like that.

Residents of Baillie House, where there is an active outbreak of COVID-19, have received their vaccinations against the virus.

Linda Fulkerson advocated for her mother, who is a resident of the longterm care facility, to ensure that the residents in her section of the facility – where there have been numerous cases – received the vaccine.

Fulkerson has power of attorney for her mother, and gave permission for her to be vaccinated on Dec. 30.

However, later that afternoon, she was informed that the vaccination team would not be giving shots in the section, or “neighbourhood” of the facility called Albion Flats, where the outbreak had occurred.

Fulkerson said her mother has not contracted the virus, but she had been informed at one point that 18 residents and five staff members tested positive. The outbreak at Baillie House was announced on Dec. 2.

“It got hit pretty hard,” said Fulkerson.

Later, she said, she was not given that level of detail. When she persisted forinformation, Fulkerson was told the outbreak was improving.

Still, she was concerned that her mother, who is 91, was at serious risk.

“When Bonnie Henry received the vaccine, I had half-jokingly said, ‘I hope she didn’t get my Mom’s vaccine. She must be lower risk than my 91-year-old mother in an outbreakward.’”

The COVID-19 vaccines are being given to long-term care residents and staff in the Fraser Health Authority.

Worried that her mother’s shot might be delayed, Fulkerson made a case that residents of the Albion Flats are should be vaccinated. Within 24 hours, she was told a separate team had been assembled to vaccinate the section where the outbreak occurred.

“I realize that technically it takes time to kick in, and she needs the

second shot, but I feel better already,” said Fulkerson.

Fraser Health is in the process of vaccinating staff and residents of all long-term care homes in the region, and as this work is completed, is just beginning to vaccinate those at hospitals and acute care sites, said Fraser Health spokesperson Carrie Stefanson.

Sarah, Garrett, and Archer visited Carole in the ICU at 2 p.m. on Jan. 1. They were able to spend about an hour with her, thanks, said Sarah, to the amazing team at the hospital.

“She woke up, she looked at him, she said ‘I love you,’ and she said ‘I love you’ to my husband,” said Sarah.

Carole had seven grandchildren, including Archer and Lincoln, who was born to Garrett’s sister only two weeks earlier.

“Her grandkids meant everything to her. She was amazing,” said Sarah.

That was the reason why Sarah and Garrett wanted to induce labour – to bring Archer into the world a little earlier so Carole could meet him before she passed away.

There are multiple reasons why labour can be induced for a pregnant mother. This is not a common one.

An elective induction – when labour is induced without a medical reason – can be undertaken at 39 weeks into the pregnancy, according to HealthLinkBC. Sarah got the go ahead from doctors at 38 weeks and six days.

However, Archer refused to be born according to plan.

They arrived at the hospital at around 12:30 p.m. on Dec. 31.

In the past volunteers from the organization would pull the trees off of cars or take them from the trunks, said McKinley.

This year, people have to take the tree off the car themselves before a member of his group can take over.

And, donations must be put in a box, not handed to members.

A team of three will be at the search and rescue station by Planet Ice to collect the trees on Jan. 9 and 10, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at 23598 Jim Robson Way. The 1st Haney Scout troop is not able to offer pick-up services this year, because of COVID.

McPherson stipulated some of the more driven athletes have taken to working out with some of the clubs around the Lower Mainland.

“They’re still able to train, which is awesome, at least in terms of a kids’ mental health,” she said.

“But even if they want to do that, they need the right club connections and opportunities.”

One of McPherson’s star players, Emi Nagai, who played point guard for the senior team last year, worked with a personal trainer during the summer months, and is currently driving out to Abbotsford to train with a team.

The loss of the season is particularly tough on the SRT senior boys team, which is coached by McPherson’s husband, Scott Tomlin.

“We would have had an amazing senior boys team this year,” McPherson said. “It’s probably the best group we’ve ever had at this school, so they are probably more upset about it than the girls,” she added.

“The girls are more capable of finding the silver lining.”

Noise Barrier Feasibility Study, earlier this month, and have asked staff to include construction of a 4.5-metre-tall sound attenuation wall on a list of projects to be considered by council in coming years.

The wall would stand along the south side of the east-west arterial route through southern Pitt Meadows.

The city will also ask developers to help pay for it, with plans to negotiate a contribution from Onni, “recognizing the majority of sound impacts arise from their Golden Ears Light Industrial Business Park traffic activities.”

The city has received complaints from residents living on the south side of Airport Way, Salia Ahrabian, manager of engineering and facilities, told council.

The proposed wall would extend from the

roundabout in the east to the northwest cover of the Nature’s Walk development, which is a total length of 720 metres.

There would be gaps for roads. The sound wall must be close to either the source or the recipient to be effective, council heard, so it would be on the south side of the Trans-Canada Trail, close to residential property lines. A three-metre high row of hedge trees would be removed.

The wall cannot be built closer to the roadway, because the city needs to access Katzie Slough on occasion for maintenance work.

Councillor Bob Meachen noted that the reduction in sound

levels will not be what council expected, and he suggested the current noise levels may be temporary.

“When phase 3 and 4 of the Golden Ears Business Park are finally built out in the next three-four years,

the constant wagon train of heavy duty dump trucks will likely cease, or go down dramatically,” said Meachen.

The cost estimate includes a 15 per cent contingency of $210,000.

City is looking at funding the project through development cost charges, on a timeline that would not see the wall’s installation until the end of 2023, assuming the paln gets council’s final approval.

Betty Louise Gillespie January 23, 1930 – December 26, 2020 It is with heavy hearts that the Gillespie family announces the passing of our beloved matriarch, Betty Lou Gillespie. We are thankful that she passed peacefully at home among loving family on Dec 26th, 2020, a month shy of her 91st birthday. We share this news with heartfelt sadness over our loss, but also with love, gratitude and pride for the life she lived.

Born in Grand Forks, BC on January 23, 1930, Betty lived in Rossland, Trail and White Rock before meeting and marrying the love of her life, Bob Gillespie, and settling in Port Coquitlam. They quickly became part of the community, where they lived happily and raised their family. She nursed him through the later years of his life before his death in 1993. Betty is predeceased by parents Gordon and Hazel McIntyre, brothers Gordon (Daisy), Butch (Sandra) and Ray, and sisters Irene Johnson (Frank), Eileen Keenan (Joe) and Delores Hogg (Hubert). She is dearly missed by surviving sisters Maxine McIntyre (Don) and Kathleen Thune (Dennis).

Betty is also survived by her seven children: Gord (Diane), Garry (Jan), Mel (Deb), Al (Wendy), Todd (Karen), Tracy and Tim (Renee). She was the foundation and inspiration which supports all their families and her many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great, great grandchild.

Betty devoted herself tirelessly to raising her family while also volunteering in community service groups including the Volunteer Fire Department, Ladies Auxiliary and the Royal Purple division of the Elks charity service club.

Betty worked at the Valleyview geriatric care centre, part of the Essondale/ Riverview complex, in the food services department.

She was loyal to, and proud, of her large extended family and loved hearing about their many accomplishments. Betty’s cooking and baking skills are legendary and were a highlight of every visit and family gathering. There was always enough food to share and enough places to sit for anyone who walked through her door. She had a quick wit, a great sense of humour and a wonderful laugh.

We have lost our guiding light, but take strength from her memory and the examples of sacrifice, community service, dedication to family and generosity which she exemplified and instilled in all of us.

Current circumstances preclude a celebration of life ceremony at this time, but we hope to have a memorial gathering in the future once it is safe to do so.

In lieu of flowers the family encourages a donation to the charity of your choice and that you cherish and appreciate the members of your own families.

Augustson, Melvin Carl Passed away December 18, 2020 at the age of 70. Born March 28, 1950, predeceased by his parents Olga and Carl Augustson, sister Carol, brother Ricky and in-laws Violet and Len Salchert.

Survived by his wife Terry of 44 years, and children Kelly and Ryan (Barb) and grandchildren Brodie, Kaelyn and Violet.

Sister-Darlene Bruce (Dave), Brothers-Lloyd, Maurice (Holly) and Ken and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mel serviced in the Canadian Arm Forces from 1969-1975. Stationed in Canada and Overseas.

Maria Stelke It is with sadness, we as a family, announce the passing of Maria Stelke, our loving mother, grandmother and greatgrandmother on Saturday, November 28, 2020.

Beloved wife of the late Erwin Stelke (2007), loving mother to Bob Stelke, Karen Blom, Malcolm (d. 2020), and Marty, loving grandma to Matthew, Chris, Cassandra and loving greatgrandmother to Landon and Astoria.

Maria was born on July 30, 1921, the third child of six children to Rudolf and Elisabeth Ortel in Jagendorf, Czechoslovakia. She grew up and had many fond memories living in Sudetenland, Czechoslovakia. Her love of children drew her to becoming a pediatric nurse working in Jena, East Germany and in Heidelberg.

In 1951, she traveled to Canada visiting her friends who moved to Vancouver. On the ship to Halifax, she met her future husband. Maria ended up staying in Vancouver, Canada after marrying Erwin Stelke.

Maria and Erwin had two children and after the threat of the Cuban missile crisis, they moved to Ruskin in Maple Ridge. She lived happily on acreage operating a Children’s Holiday Guest Ranch which led her to fostering numerous children over many years. Two very young children remained in her care. She raised them as her own until adulthood.

She loved caring for her farm animals, gardening, and later having her grandchildren living close by. She attended Wildwood Church in Whonnock for many years and made very dear friends from her church family.

Maria and her husband were very involved in the AbbotsfordMission Alpen Club and enjoyed hosting the annual picnics on their property. After 40 years, Maria and Erwin moved to Abbotsford, BC and continued to enjoy their many friendships, her participation in the German Choir, and involvement with the Peace Lutheran Church.

A celebration of life, depending on the circumstances, will occur in July, 2021, which would have been her 100th birthday.

Born June 27, 1956 and passed away suddenly December 27, 2020.

He was raised in Maple Ridge, BC. Predeceased by his father Angus and mother Elsie. He leaves to mourn his aunties and uncles, Shirley and John Kinney, Alex and Lil Olmstead, Jim and Marlene Olmstead and Helen Olmstead. He also leaves to mourn many cousins.

Lachlan enjoyed many things in life including traveling, eating exotic food, watching professional wrestling, attending church with his family, and singing.

Lachlan was very generous, had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh.

He will be greatly missed.

A special note of thanks to his care-givers from Greystone, in Pitt Meadows, for the past 15 years.

Funeral services for Lachlan will be held at a later date.

GOURLAY, Lawrence May 12, 1936 - December 26, 2020 GOURLAY – Lawrence Livingstone “Larry” was one tough old guy who finally succumbed to his lengthy battle with declining health on December 26, 2020 in Maple Ridge, B.C. He was predeceased by father Albert, mother Marion, son David. He is survived by his wife Dale, son Neil (Crystal), daughters Tara (Grant), Erin (Craig), grandchildren Prem, Joshua, Jeremy, Brianna, and Hannah as well as great grandchildren Quinn, Sophia, Auryn and Aevum.

Many thanks to Pastor Ed, neighbors, friends, and Larry’s work buddies for visiting with him throughout the years. You all made his days brighter by stopping in. A special thanks to long time neighbors and friends the Lafonds for absolutely all you have done for the family over the years. We would also like to extend a thank-you to the staff at Independence Matters for their care for Larry while he was home and of course the amazing group of staff, caregivers, and volunteers at Baillie House.

REED - Brent It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Brent Reed. Brent passed away at Ridge Meadows Hospital on December 30th, and is survived by his wife Carol, daughters Jessica (Brett), Emily (Ron), Melissa and Robin (Graham), and grandchildren Asher, Bentley, Jacob, Vada and Noah.

Those who knew Brent will remember him as one of the nicest people they knew. His sense of humour was larger than life, and he took great pleasure in sharing his many diverse experiences and curiosities with others.

He valued kindness and honesty, and considered everyone on an equal basis while never judging people on appearances. Forgiveness was one of his primary defaults, and he was never one to hold a grudge.

He was born in Nipawan, Saskatchewan on August 4th, 1953, to Brock and Christina Reed, and was the youngest sibling to his brothers Grant and Gary, and his sister Carolyne. As a child, he moved to Chilliwack, BC, where he spent several years living with his father following the untimely death of his mother. He learned some rare and unique skills during this time of his life, many of which he was able to later share with his own family years later.

Brent was an accomplished saw filer who became head of his team at Bay Lumber in Pitt Meadows, and eventually changed careers in order to become a jewellery designer and goldsmith. After opening his own teaching studio at home, he went on to become a faculty member at Lasalle College, teaching jewellery metalwork classes to students from across the world.

Brent’s fondness and love for his family was very obvious, and it fills us with sadness that he did not have the chance to see his five grandchildren grow up. Nevertheless, he will always be remembered for the love and genuine warmth he expressed to them as children.

Brent’s faith in God was strong until the end, and he held a firm confidence in his Heavenly Father’s grace and love at every step in his journey.

We may not be together in the way we usd to be.

We are still connected by a cord no eye can see.
