Tatiana and Mark Buhler of Abbotsford have a heart for helping others, and now that message is being passed on to their four young children. The Buhler kids, after finding out that there are people in the community who go without food or gifts, decided to set up a stand in front of their house and sell treats to raise money to help others. They began the initiative on Nov. 1, selling homemade cookies, doughnuts, hot chocolate, candy and other treats to passersby outside of their home on Terry Fox Avenue in central Abbotsford. Charge laid in fatal crash

Retired officer Shinder Kirk died in Naniamo A Nanaimo man has been charged in relation to the car crash that killed retired Abbotsford Police sergeant Shinder Kirk in December 2018. Conrad Nikolaus Wetten, 23, is scheduled to make his first court appearance Dec. 17 in Nanaimo provincial court to face one count of driving without due care and attention. Wetten was formally charged Nov. 15. The charge stems from a head-on collision on Cedar Road near Cedar Bridge in Nanaimo on Dec. 22, 2018. It is alleged that Wetten was driving his Ford pickup when it collided head-on with a Chevrolet pickup KIRK driven by Kirk, 49, who died at the scene. Two passengers with Kirk were airlifted to hospital with serious injuries. Wetten and his female passenger suffered minor injuries and did not require hospitalization. Kirk began his policing career with the Vancouver Police Department in 1981, moving 10 years later to the Abbotsford Police Department. He was serving as a motorcycle cop and was filling in as a back-up media officer before being asked to take over the position full-time in 2000. He later became the media spokesperson for the RCMP Integrated Gang Task Force and then the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (CFSEU). In 2012, he announced his retirement after more than 30 years of policing.

Buhler family sets $800 goal From A1 – Katie, 2, and Jamie, 11 months – are often by their side. The group is outside, rain or shine, every weekday after school from around 3 to 5 p.m. Their goal is to raise $800 to sponsor a family with four children through the Abbotsford Christmas Bureau, supplying them with food and gifts for the holiday season. Tatiana said she and Mark have been involved in sponsorship with other organizations over the years. Earlier this year, Tatiana was approached by a homeless man who was asking for change – which she gave him – as she was pulling the kids out of the car at a grocery store. “Our kids right away started to ask questions: ‘Mommy, why is that

man asking you for money?’ I took it as an opportunity to share with the kids that some people don’t have the same opportunities in life, through their choices or life’s circumstances, and how it takes people like us to help them out where we can,” Tatiana said. In the days that followed, the kids returned to the topic a few times. Benson, in particular, was distressed that there could be people in Abbotsford with no home or not enough money to buy food, Tatiana said. “Every time we would drive by the homeless, my son would beg me to pull over so we could give them change or demand that we go to the store and buy them food ‘right now!’ ” Tatiana said a few times they purchased some snacks for a person

Support staff vote to accept school district’s final offer

Parents can rest easy: there will be no strike by the Abbotsford School District’s support workers. The members of the Teamsters Local 31 union voted on Monday to accept the district’s final offer for a new collective agreement. “Formal approval by the Board of Education and BCPSEA (B.C. Public School Employers Association) will follow in the coming days,” Kayla Stuckart, the manager of communications for the district, said in an email. Clerical workers, bus drivers, librarians, education assistants, youth care workers, maintenance workers and custodians are all represented by the Teamsters. The biggest grievances were linked to money. The union said the district paid local support staff the least in the province, by an average of $3 to $5 an hour. They also received fewer paid sick days than counterparts in other districts. The details of the new collective agreement have not been made public yet.

Carrying airsoft handgun

A 28-year-old man has been charged after being found carrying an airsoft handgun after allegedly breaking into a construction site in Abbotsford on Sunday night. Abbotsford Police Sgt. Judy Bird said police were alerted by an alarm company that a man had broken into a gated construction site in the 3700 block of Townline Road.

When officers arrived, the man was no longer inside the complex, but they found a person matching his description not far from the scene. The man was detained, and police discovered that he had a replica gun tucked into the

waistband of his pants, Bird said. Patrick Robert Morgan Saunders has now been charged with break-and-enter, carrying a weapon or prohibited device, and possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

A proposed new downtown retail and apartment building got a second approval from council last week, after it revised its plans to deal with a tree on a neighbouring property. A developer hopes to build a 21-unit apartment building, with retail space on the ground floor, at the corner of Gladys Avenue and George Ferguson Way. Council had given the project the goahead in May, despite the building’s parking plans requiring the removal of a nearby tree on an adjacent property whose owner wanted to retain the tree. The developer – Pacific Boulevard Investments – wasn’t able to get that neighbour on board, and re-drew its plans for parking. Because those plans involved creating a tighter-packed underground parking lot than automatically permitted by the city, the developer needed council’s approval a second time. It got that approval last week, but not before Coun. Bruce Banman again raised questions about the building’s design. The Abbotsford Downtown Business Association (ADBA) had written letters to the city twice – one in 2018, the other in January 2019 – expressing concern that the project doesn’t fit the historic character of the neighbourhood. After the first letter, some alterations were made, including the addition of bricks to the building’s facade. But it wasn’t enough to convince the ADBA,

Council has approved a revised proposal for a new commercial and apartment building at the corner of Gladys Avenue and George Ferguson Way, just east of the historic downtown. and, in January, executive director Jennifer McEwan wrote: “More attention should be given to this site as it is a high visibility corner at the edge of Historic Downtown.” Last week, Coun. Bruce Banman raised the design question again. “When I compare this to the rest of the buildings in the historic downtown, it looks too modern to me,” he said. “It just doesn’t look as if it fits into the form and character of the historic downtown, at least to my eyes.” City staff had previously declared the design was appropriate, saying it was a “high-quality development” with a design matching its land-use designation.

In response to Banman, the city’s planners noted that the proposal sits in an area where buildings must have “historic influence,” but face fewer requirements than new developments within the fourblock historic downtown core. (At the centre of those four blocks is the intersection of Essendene and Montrose avenues.) “If this building were in that core, it would not be consistent with the guidelines,” said Darren Braun, the city’s director of development planning. Unanimous approval was given for the project’s development permit, although it will return to council for public comment at an upcoming meeting.

Would someone please call the cops

It happens just about every day and night. Someone – somewhere – suspects illegal activity or has a complaint and the first and generally only thing that person does is sit down and post to a public Facebook group. There is a car driving down my street. I saw someone looking in my backyard. The neighbour’s dog is barking. A pickup truck was speeding through downtown this afternoon and triggered my Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. OK, not all such posts are so trivial, and people’s tendency towards paranoia and whiny natures are not the point. The point is this: It is not enough to post to Facebook and expect any result other than getting a few moments of attention. If you have a complaint about what you

think might be dangerous, or might be a crime, you actually have to pick up the phone. Cops are also not mind readers and they don’t subscribe to the psychic hot-line either. For every post about a petty theft or bad driver there is almost always a comment such as, “Well, the cops don’t do anything” or “Where are the police?” You have to call them, folks. If it’s urgent, call 911. If it’s not urgent but you want to speak to an officer and make police aware of an issue, call the non-emergency line at 604859-5225. It may sound old-fashioned – using your phone to call someone – but that’s the way it works.

With snow possible to hit the ground in Abbotsford in the coming weeks, city crews will be getting ready to respond. But don’t expect to leave all the work to the professionals. Last year, the city spent just over $1 million to remove snow from, and apply salt on, more than 900 kilometres of roads in the largest municipality in British Columbia. The city uses 16 anti-ice/ snow removal units, along with 11 tractors, backhoes and loaders to get the snow off city roads. That and tons and tons and tons of salt.

Last year, the city used 3,500 tons of salt, which cost about $400,000. (At roughly five cents a pound, that’s a lot better deal than the salt the average person will buy to put on their driveway.) City roads are split into three priority levels. About 350 kilometres of roads – including arterial and collector roads, transit routes, school zones, and hillside access roads – are the first priority. When those are cleared, the city moves onto the second, and then the third priority levels. If snow keeps falling on the first-priority routes, those roads will keep getting plowed to keep them cleared. The Provincial Ministry

of Transportation and Infrastructure, and the contractors they employ, are responsible for clearing not only local highways, but Mt. Lehman Road between Highway 1 and Abbotsford International Airport. Sidewalks, though, are left to property owners. The bylaw governing sidewalk-removal of snow also prohibits shovelling that white stuff onto the road. Instead, residents should dump it on their own property. The bylaw requires property owners to have snow removed from all sidewalks bordering their land by noon after the snow first starts to accumulate. (If a home

backs onto an arterial road like Maclure Road, the property owner doesn’t have to clear that sidewalk.) If you fail to do so, you can be fined $150 for the first offence and $200 on the second offence. But like many other bylaw violations, you’ll probably get a couple warnings first. The city has three levels of compliance. The first two involve education and compliance. But if you persist on leaving your sidewalk uncleaned (and if somebody keeps complaining about it) you can be fined. Last year, a single ticket was issued for not clearing sidewalks.

Abby man last to rent car that was found with body

Investigators have determined that the vehicle that caught on fire with a body inside on Nov. 15 was last rented by Abbotsford resident Suhkdev Dhaliwal. The 48-year-old was the last person to rent the black Chevrolet Tahoe, and the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) is looking to develop a timeline of events leading up to the report of the burning vehicle and the discovery of the body. “While we are unable to confirm if Mr. Dhaliwal was the victim in this case, we are interested in speaking to anyone who may have seen or spoken to him,” said Sgt. Frank Jang of IHIT. “We must also wait

fire with a body inside in the 5300 block of Bates Road on Nov. 15 at around 10:30 p.m. Witnesses reported seeing a dark-coloured SUV leaving the scene of the fire towards Mission. Due to the

suspicious nature of the incident, IHIT was called in to take conduct of the case. IHIT continues to work closely with the Abbotsford Police Department and the B.C. Coroners Service to gather evidence. The location is on a secluded section of the road between large farm properties – an area that has been home to criminal activity before. Alexander Blanarou, 24, was found dead of a gunshot wound in the field adjacent to the same section of Bates Road in December 2017. No one has yet been charged in his death. Close to 30 containers of suspected druglab material were found dumped in the same area in April 2015.

The year’s not yet over, but the Abbotsford Police Department has issued more than 50 per cent more tickets than all of last year as officers try to tame the city’s reckless drivers. Ten people have died on the city’s roads so far in 2019, the same figure as in 2017. “I say over and over, that the most dangerous thing you can do in our community is be a pedestrian or drive a vehicle – and that’s sad,” Police Chief Mike Serr told council. As of the end of October, police were on pace to hand out more than 6,600 tickets in 2019. About 4,200 tickets were served to drivers in 2018. Serr said police have boosted enforcement, using “intelligence-led initiatives” targeting problem areas. “We are truly focusing on the most dangerous offences: running red lights, distracted driving, excessive speeding, impaired driving,” he said.

The water in Abbotsford’s distribution system has water levels “well below” a tougher federal health benchmark. Asked about the city’s drinking water during budget meetings earlier this month, engineering general manager Rob Isaac said regular testing shows that “there is no lead in our distribution system.” Isaac noted that while the water distributed by the city is fine, there is still some contamination risk that residents should be aware of. “When you move onto private property, in some cases there are older lines inside houses that have copper- and lead-soldered joints, as well as some of the cheaper fixtures potentially have lead.” Tests have found that many Public health authorities schools in Canada – and most in Abbotsford – have water with have urged people to flush lead limits exceeding a threshold their drinking water lines until they feel cold, to ensure that set by Health Canada.

He was on a journey across the state of Oregon and stopped for lunch at a Sweet Tomatoes restaurant. As he was getting his food, he heard a melodious song coming from the dining room - a group of high school students were singing for the restaurant kitchen staff. Curious, yet encouraged by the music, he approached one of the young ladies he’d seen singing and expressed how much he had enjoyed it. “We like to sing for the staff of the places we eat. We think it’s a small way we can thank them for their hard work” the girl explained. Steve thanked her again and took his plate to an empty table, happier for hearing their song. A few moments later, the same girl approached him with a friend.“We wanted to let you know that we will be doing a full concert this evening in town and we’d like to specially invite you. It’s at 7pm.” “I would love to come! If one song can be so encouraging, why not a whole concert!” Steve went on to share with the girls that he had been feeling depressed lately, but their smiling faces had lifted his spirits.

That evening as the girls prepared to perform, Steve approached them. He had come and brought a friend with him.The girls led them to empty seats near the front of the concert hall. After the concert was finished, Steve told the girls: “Meeting you all at Sweet Tomatoes was no coincidence. My friend and I felt compelled to come to the concert tonight.You kids are different from any teenagers I’ve ever known and you have no idea how much you have encouraged me tonight. I have been feeling very depressed and was contemplating taking my life but tonight I have decided not to commit suicide. I saw so much joy in you all and because of this I know that life is worth living.” Steve is not the only one whose life has been touched by the music and smiles of Fountainview Academy Orchestra & Singers. Each year they tour the West Coast bringing Christmas happiness and encouragement to everyone they meet, and once again, they will be performing in Abbotsford this season. Fraser Valley Grand Gala raises $110,000 for health care Event supports hospitals throughout the Fraser Valley The Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation (FVHCF) raised approximately $110,000 at its recent inaugural Fraser Valley Grand Gala. The event was held Nov. 15 at Harrison Hot Springs Hotel in support of hospitals in Abbotsford, Mission, Chilliwack, Hope, Agassiz and Harrison Hot Springs. A sold-out crowd of 250 attended the gala, which had a 1920s Gatsby-style theme. FVHCF board chair Mike Adkin, Abbotsford Mayor Henry Braun – chair of the Fraser Valley regional hospital board – and Minister of Health Adrian Dix were among those who addressed the crowd. FVHCF executive director Liz Harris said the event was a “truly grand affair.” “As a foundation, we are committed to the improvement of health care in all our communities in the eastern Fraser Valley. This is dependent on fundraising, and what better way to do it than a night like this,” she said. For 2019/2020, the FVHCF has embarked on some ambitious goals for the communities they serve. Funds from the Grand Gala will help the foundation achieve its goal of raising $3.5 million for projects that include lab upgrades in Mission, primary-care renovations in Chilliwack, stretchers for the Hope ER, and new equipment for the ER expansion in Abbotsford. $300K donation boosts career education at UFV RBC gives to Centre for Experiential and Career Education on Abby campus

University of the Fraser Valley has received a $300,000 donation from the RBC Foundation for the newly created Centre for Experiential and Career Education (CECE). The donation was announced at a celebration at UFV’s Abbotsford campus last Thursday (Nov 21) by Martin Thibodeau, RBC regional president in B.C. The funds came through RBC Future Launch, a 10-year $500 million commitment to empowering Canadian youth to build meaningful careers. With a focus on networking, skills development, and experience, the initiative aims to help solve the problems facing young people due to the changing landscape of the workplace. “When experience is so important to getting a job, but so hard to come by, young people are left feeling uncertain about their futures in the new world of work,” Thibodeau said. “We hope that through our partnership with the University of the Fraser Valley, RBC

Future Launch can help young people get those all-important first jobs and break the ‘no experience, no job’ cycle.” Maureen Wideman, UFV associate vice-president of teaching and learning, officially announced the creation of CECE. She said CECE will bring together various units at UFV to provide students with opportunities such as paid co-operative education, work study, career education, work-place integrated learning, volunteer experiences, and curricular activities. “Moving this group of talented people into one academic unit signals to our students and the community that, while we are building 21st century academic skills, these are also the skills required for 21st century employment and community engagement,” Wideman said. Liana Thompson is leading the new centre as its inaugural director. She said that the opportunities provided by the CECE will help

students develop, articulate, and recognize career-related skills. ‘We want students to be thinking about how to connect their education to their career earlier, more often, with more exposure to more opportunities,” Thompson said. She said it is hoped that the CECE will help students recognize that their academic experience has career relevance. “Their group assignments prove they can work on a team. Juggling courses shows that they have a handle on time management. Students learn how to meet deadlines, work with different people, collaborate in groups, advocate for themselves, and assess situations and propose solutions to problems,” Thompson said. One early project resulting from the RBC donation will be a career-planning app for use on smart phones. At the recent UFV Town and Gown event, RBC was awarded a UFV Ripple Maker paddle as donor of the year.

Grant of $15,000 awarded to youth environmental project Youth taking positive action on climate change The Abbotsford Community Foundation (ACF) and RBC Foundation have awarded a grant of $15,000 to support Network Green. The project will bring together five to 10 youth environmental leaders from across Abbotsford to develop projects that address some of the most pressing sustainability challenges facing the community. Four musicians from Abbotsford were among the winners at the Fraser Valley Music Awards (FVMA) last Thursday (Nov. 21) at Corky’s Pub in Chilliwack. The awards were presented in 16 categories, with the following Abbotsford residents receiving honours: David Ivan Neil (country), Stephen Carl O’Shea (electronic), Kristin Witko (experimental and pop), and Eric “The Lightning” Taylor (metal). The FVMAs are an undertaking of CIVL Radio under the direction of station manager Aaron Levy. The fans had their first chance to choose their favourite, and their almost 400 votes gave the Dakota Leslie Award to Maple Ridge’s Western Jaguar. The night’s biggest moment came with the presentation of the first-ever FVMA Lifetime Achievement Award to Trooper guitarist and co-founder Brian Smith of Langley. Prior to accepting the trophy, Smith and the crowd were treated to a congratulatory video featuring some of Canada’s top musicians as well as a variety of other well-wishers.

Hundreds of competitors pushed their body to the limits at the annual Fraser Valley Throwdown, which occurred at the Abbotsford Centre on Friday and Saturday. The crossfit event sees male and female athletes compete within various individual and team divisions over two days. They face a series of workouts that are designed to accommodate novice to elite functional fitness athletes. Each event is programmed uniquely using movements that include weightlifting, powerlifting, medicine ball and kettlebell training, rowing, running, skipping, plyometrics, and gymnastics.

The programming tests and rewards well-rounded functional fitness. At the end of the weekend, the individual or team with the best overall fitness level in each division comes out on top. Individual winners from the 2019 event were: American Thomas Hoffman (elite men), Washington State’s Hannah Frakes (elite women), Pitt Meadows native Michael Brain (intermediate men), Sooke’s Jacklyn Evans (intermediate women), Penticton’s Ross Mackenzie (masters men 35 to 39), Port Moody’s Audrey March (masters women 35 to 39), Semiahmoo’s Mike McCorkell (masters men 4o to 44), Delta’s Lindsay Barluk (masters women 40 to 44),

The Abbotsford Falcons Atom Black squad has captured the provincial championship. The Falcons took home the 2019 Atom nine-man provincial title with a pair of big wins at the provincial finals in Kamloops on Nov. 16. Abbotsford blanked Prince George 40-0, defeated Kelowna 22-8 and then beat Kelowna 7-6 in the shootout round to earn the championship. The win comes off an excellent Valley Community Football League regular season that saw Abbotsford go a perfect 8-0 and then win the VCFL

title by beating the Abbotsford Falcons Atom White team in the league final earlier this month. The Falcons Black also outscored its opposition 25955 in those eight regular-season games. The provincial champion roster consists of: Kingston Dunn, Liam Dornan, Easton Prokop, Jaxsen Beauregard, Levi Grozell, Kaleb Weiler, Jackson Williams, Reid Dixon, Dominic Loewen, Liam Sutton-Atkins, Braylen McAlister, Nicholas Varey, Jaxen Haraysm, Josiah Sithivong, Amira Dawit, Marcus Ram-Myers, Avraan Brar, Isaac Holdsworth, Dayton Gilchrist and Zachery Marcynuik.

She is predeceased by one grandson and survived by eight other grandchildren and two great grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He is survived by and loved with all his heart his wife, Martha, children; June (John) Siemens, Sandi (Lorna) Janzen and Steve (Diane) Janzen, his 17 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

BOLDT Henry H. Henry H. Boldt died on November 15, 2019. He was born on February 20, 1923 in Alexanderfeld, South Russia and immigrated to Canada in 1926. He grew up in La Salle, Winnipeg and Yarrow. He and his wife Lydia settled in St. Catharines, Ontario where he was lead hand in the parts department at General Motors for 34 years. After retirement they moved to Abbotsford. Henry leaves behind two daughters and their husbands, six grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, two brothers and their wives, two sisters-in-law, and numerous other family. He was predeceased by his wife, Lydia (2008), his parents and three siblings. He will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him. A memorial will be held for him on December 2nd at 2:00 pm at Bakerview Church in Abbotsford. Donations on his behalf may be made to Mennonite Central Committee. KLASSEN Helen Helen Klassen, 89, of Abbotsford, BC, surrounded by loving family, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Friday, November 22, 2019. Born July 1, 1930, in Gull Lake, Saskatchewan, she was the daughter of the late Cornelius and Margaret Kehler. Leaving crop farming, her family moved to Abbotsford and started a dairy farm. After high school, Helen went to Bible school, and then Business College. She married and moved to Vancouver in 1952, after she met the love of her life, Bill Klassen. They were blessed with 3 children, and her life revolved around raising her boys and being actively involved in the church community. Helen accompanied Bill, when his job in engineering took him to Prince Rupert, Kamloops, and later to Australia. Helen and the family had many tenting and hiking adventures throughout the countryside. In 1993, Helen and Bill moved to Abbotsford and enjoyed retired living. Helen struggled with health issues in her later years, but with Godâ€™s grace and her tenacity, she continued to live well. They moved to Menno Place in 2016 and finally, after moving into the Menno Hospital for 5 months, the Lord took Helen home. Helen is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, William Henry Klassen, three sons: Ken (Herta), Rick (Anita), and Garry (Lori); 4 siblings: Katie, Marie (Henry), Elsie (Henry - deceased), and Neil (Eileen - deceased). She was also blessed with 8 grandchildren: Daryl (Theresa), Erin (Tom), Mark (Kim), Jeff (Karen), Nicole (Paul), Kaylan (Nathan), Alysha, and Janelle (Graeme), as well as 13 great-grandchildren. Helen is predeceased by her brothers: Peter (Sue) and Henry (in infancy); and sister: Margaret (Patrick). Our heartfelt thanks go to the staff, chaplains, and administration at Menno Place and Hospital, where Helen was well cared for in her final days.
