CELEBRATING 125 YEARS

1110 Beach Drive 250-598-4321 victoriagolf.com

As our 125th Anniversary celebrations come to a close, the Club still has much to celebrate. Seven nights a week, 364 days a year, you can enter the doors of our vibrant clubhouse and find members from ages 3-100 enjoying their Club. Generations of families continue to join our community of members and help us create a dynamic and exciting atmosphere. That is something to celebrate. Speaking of generations, meet the Brown family. Dating back to the 1950s when Herbert and Sylvia Brown joined, members of the Brown family, for the last four generations, joined VGC to enjoy its services and sense of community throughout the passing years. Lively social events and world-class golf they do enjoy, but several

family members took it upon themselves to become more involved in the Club. By joining various Committees and the Board of Directors, they have helped shape the direction that VGC has gone and continues to go. At VGC, we place a large importance in bringing generations together to foster deeper relationships of respect and compassion between family members. We are honoured that, through the years, generational families in the Oak Bay community and beyond have selected VGC as the place to come together as a family and spend time with one another. Whether it’s out on the links, at a social event or simply a lunch date, you will see multiple generations spending that crucial bonding time together. And for that, we will continue celebrating.

EDITOR'S LETTER

Embracing the true spirit of the holidays

T

his can be a truly magical time of year — a time filled with family, friends, fabulous feasts, delicious desserts and hope for what the future, and a new year, will bring us. But it’s also a time to reflect on how truly lucky we are to live where we do, in such a safe, beautiful and caring community, and to give back. That could mean making a donation to charity, volunteering your time, or remembering to put something in the food bank bin the next time you go grocery shopping. Growing up in a single parent, low-income household, I was taught we can all give back — in big ways and small ones. You don’t have to be rich to make a donation or retired to volunteer your time. In fact, some of the most generous people I know are the ones who monetarily might not

have much to give or busy working parents who want to make their community a better place. Whether it’s donating items you don’t need anymore, organizing a sock or coat drive for the homeless, or volunteering for a cause, there are countless ways to make a difference. And you might be surprised at how much you get out of giving. I’ve been volunteering since I was a teenager and I have to say, it’s been life-changing. The Special Olympics athletes I coach in figure skating and public speaking always thank me for helping them, but I should be thanking them. They make me look at things differently, they always make me smile, and they’ve taught me nothing is impossible. When they accomplish something they never thought they could, my heart is truly full. They inspire me to do better, to

be better, and their joy is infectious. An hour or two a week, or even a couple hours a month, can make more of a difference than you might think. The holidays are a good reminder that things don’t make us happy. What we choose to do with our time, and the people we surround ourselves with, are what really bring us joy. Wishing you a joy-filled 2019! Tess van Straaten Tweed editor

pdating a century-old home into a modern-day, spectacular space while not losing the traditional charm can be a challenging task. Doing it on time and on budget? That’s almost impossible. Just ask Michael Hooton and Moira Taylor. “We knew from the beginning it was going to be a big project, but because of the nature of the home, being an older build, there are always things that come up when you start opening up walls and before you know it, the small project turns into a big one,” laughs Michael. The couple is lucky enough to own a classic Samuel Maclure home on Runnymeade Avenue in South Oak Bay. The renowned architect is known for many notable builds around Victoria including Hatley Castle and the Biggerstaff Wilson mansion on Rockland Avenue.

With the marvelous makeover finished, the family is looking forward to hosting their first holiday party in their new home, the theme of which no doubt will be ‘better late than never.’

The character-filled hallway in this South Oak Bay charmer

The original home on Runnymeade Avenue is believed to have been built around 1910 and showcases many of the classic Maclure features — large exposed wood beams, exquisite woodworking details with a nod to both Tudor and Arts & Crafts styling, expansive window seats, and a sweeping central staircase. What the history-filled home also came with, even after a few facelifts by previous owners over the years, was old 12

knob and tube wiring throughout and structural issues where poor renovations had been undertaken. “The good news was, apart from those few issues, we inherited good bones,” says Michael, noting the family was able to live in the home throughout the major reno. “It’s been fun to watch it come together into a liveable, modern but classic home that will serve generations to come.”

The couple purchased the property in 2006, but rented it until they were ready to move back to Canada in 2009. The family of four — Michael, Moira and their son and daughter — had been living in Singapore prior to coming to Victoria. “At the time, Moira had never lived in Canada and we had looked in Calgary and Vancouver but didn’t find anything we loved,” explains Michael. “Then my brother suggested Victoria, we came, we literally looked at one other home, and we fell in love with this one. Moira and the kids moved here permanently in 2009 and I followed shortly after in 2010, and we’ve been happy here ever since.” The family did some small renovations, adding light fixtures and painting and decorating rooms. A notable addition was the large, period-appropriate stained glass light fixture in dining room, which ties in perfectly with original fixtures in the front and upstairs halls, as well as perfectly curated furniture in the study. And although they were very happy in the home, there were some areas that needed work in order to make it more liveable for their family. “When this home was built around 1910, the kitchen wasn’t used the same way it is today,” explains

Moira. “It was a small, galley-style kitchen that was basically designed to be used by one or two staff to prepare meals. Our modern day, kitchen-party culture just didn’t really fit into that space so we knew we wanted to renovate but didn’t really start until the oven stopped working.” “That’s the running joke around here,” laughs Michael. “The oven breaking down started the whole trickle-down effect of this rather large renovation.” When the couple decided it was time, they met with a few contractors, of which Tim Agar, project manager for Horizon Pacific Contracting, made the biggest impact on them. “Tim had come recommended by friends, and I could tell right away why,” explains Michael. “After we spoke on the phone, he came right over, met with us and asked us about our needs and wants. He was so professional and we felt at ease right away. Throughout the renovation, we’ve found that every time he steps foot on the property he brings value. That’s important to us.” Horizon helped with the plan of adding square footage to the kitchen, while tying in a pre-existing extension off the old kitchen in order to create a family room. The addition of a laundry room, powder room, and an access from inside the home to the above-garage guest suite (previously only accessed through the garage) were done seamlessly, with particular attention paid to the millwork details in order to integrate them into the rest of the classic Maclure styling of the home.

The big, bright kitchen — which features gorgeous white quartz countertops and a large skylight — is both Moira and Michael’s favourite feature of the renovation. “I love cooking and having the big island in the middle of the kitchen is a dream,” says Moira. “Appliances are all cleverly hidden behind beautiful, custom cabinetry by Splinters Millwork. They ensured that even the smallest Maclure details from other parts of the house were mirrored perfectly. “Our biggest fear now that this is all complete is that we won’t use the rest of the rooms in the house because this space is so amazing,” Moira jokes. With the marvelous makeover finished, the family is looking forward to hosting their first holiday party in their new home, the theme of which no doubt will be ‘better late than never.’ “Our original plan was for this holiday and renovation completion party to be held last Christmas, but that didn’t quite happen,” laughs Michael.

Tell us about your family and your strong ties to Oak Bay? My long connection to Oak Bay dates back seven generations on my mother’s side of the family. My five-timesgreat-grandfather, Captain William H. McNeill, was with appointed by the Hudson’s Bay Company as chief trader of Fort Victoria in 1839. He CLAIM TO FAME IN OAK BAY: was one of the original Realtor with Newport Realty/ five landowners of Oak Christie’s International Bay, purchasing 200 acres and an 11 th –generation in South Oak Bay in 1853 Oak Bay resident for $1 per acre. I‘m also a fifth-generation Victorian on my father’s side of the family.

TEA TESS Mike Boorman

What do you love about Oak Bay? I love Oak Bay because it feels like home. Every street is familiar. Although there might be the occasional new building or renovated home, the beaches and trees remain the same and the memories of each little nook and cranny never change. Although I love exploring the world and learning about other cultures, there’s an innocence about Oak Bay that is such a pleasure to come back to.

Tell us about your work and your hobbies? The Boorman family has a long heritage of real estate services in the community dating back four generations and I love my job! Finding people the dream house that will become their home, and sustain them financially for the rest of their lives, feels very important. I really like to be busy and my wife would tell you I never sit down! I’m also an avid vinyl music collector and I have a side job as a Panda mascot.

What brings you joy? Spending time with my family — especially my teenaged kids. They’re in grade 10 and grade 12 so I feel this time slipping away pretty quickly. I love the quick drives and the meals cooked together and the stolen moments where you build connections.

Who is your hero and why? My hero would be my grandfather, Royal Canadian Navy Lt. Cdr. Eric Boak. We never met as he passed early in life after the Second World War. I’ve read accounts in history and listened to first-hand stories

through my wife’s great-uncle who served under him. He captained the destroyer HMCS Sioux and saw active battle, including the Invasion of Normandy on D-Day, providing protection for the troops during the assault on Juno Beach.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

build a life and family together is a product of the guidance we give each other every day. I believe it’s the little decisions — the kind gestures or words — that truly form us but if I had to pick a guiding principle it would have to be: ‘Work like a captain and play like a pirate’.

ari McLay admits she’s a little bohemian at heart so the owner of Tulipe Noire Clothing brings us stand-out holiday fashion with personality and a free spirit. Forget the little black dress and brighten up this season with gorgeous prints in florals and paisley, lush texture, and rich, deep colours. After being raised in Victoria by a young single mother who was a bohemian artist, Kari, who was always intrigued by the French language, moved to Montreal right out of high school. She studied social work and art history at McGill and has a masters degree in social work. “I love Victoria but Montreal is my favourite city in North America,” the fashionista and philanthropist says. “My daughter was born there, my mother is buried there, and it’s the city where I got engaged to my husband.” In addition to being a small business owner, giving back to the community is something that’s very important for Kari. “I’m a business owner with a mission to give back and I am passionate about creating goodwill and supporting opportunities for others,” she says. “I’m passionate about Dance Victoria and being the chair of their fundraising committee and organizing the annual Cherish Fundraiser Fashion Show (which also helps Victoria Women’s Transition House). In a nutshell, I’m a social entrepreneur.” Asked to describe her personal style, Kari says “I love colour and texture without compromising comfort, the mix of classic with a twist, a mix of old world and modern. I love supporting young up-and-coming designers like Eliza Faulkner of Montreal. I love beautiful fabrics like cashmere, linen, silk, and brocade, and accessories — interesting jewelry, shoes, scarves and hand bags. It’s all fun but I always say, ‘we all go out of here naked’. Being kind is much more important than being well-dressed.” When it comes to beauty, Kari has several secrets that keep her dewy skin glowing from the inside out. “I don’t drink alcohol or suntan and I drink lots of water,” she explains. “I try to get a good night’s sleep and my diet is very balanced and healthy. I also work for a progressive company called Beautycounter, a leader in the clean beauty movement. They’re doing everything counter to the mainstream beauty industry, fighting to ban more chemicals in our personal care products.” Much like her healthy beauty routine, Kari’s motto for life is also simple and easy to follow. “Life is short,” she says. “Be kind, have fun, and always give others a leg up. That’s my motto.” WINTER 2018

Crazy for Christmas By Devon MacKenzie

F

or many, Christmas is a celebratory time of year filled with friends, family and traditions. For Heather Dickson it is exactly that, with a big emphasis on the tradition of decorating her picture-perfect little home on Monterey Avenue. “It all started when I was young,” explains Heather, sitting in her cozy kitchen sipping a cup of tea. “My father, who was a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force, was stationed in Metz, France, when I was a child. We spent a lot of time wandering the Christmas markets, which have been a staple of the city since the 1600s, and I embraced all of it. I became this little Christmasophile,” laughs Heather. Heather, who was around nine-years-old when they first arrived in France and 13-years-old when they left, was enamored by the sights, sounds and smells of a traditional European Christmas and has continued the tradition to this day in her own way. Now retired, she has much more time to spend preparing and organizing for the season, which her family and friends have come to expect. “I host a big decorating party at the beginning of Decem20

TWEED

ber, and then another Christmas party later in the month,” she explains. “I love hosting people, I have such fond memories of my parents, who were very gregarious people, hosting big holiday parties and all the cooking and baking that went along with it. So every year I try to re-create that same feeling.” From the decorations, to the ambiance, and even down to the china her holiday food and baking is served on (a 10-piece setting of the traditional Spode Christmas Tree pattern china just for the occasion), every facet of the holiday is covered in Heather’s house. But where has all of her exquisite, traditional décor come from? “Believe it or not, I still have many of the pieces from when I was young,” she says. “A lot of the traditional European decorations are so well-made they last for years.” Heather’s collection is also added to by friends and family who come to her annual decorating parties — people normally bring a decoration — and also through her travels around the world. “Since I’ve been retired, I’ve been enjoying a lot of travel and I really get to add some fantastic pieces to my collection

through that,” she says. Some of her favourites include a set of small, German-made angel ornaments which she brought back to Canada as a child. “That’s probably my largest themed collection of ornaments, the angels, and it all started with a Hummel cherub ornament when I was around nine-yearsold,” she says, smiling. “I love angels, and I usually try to find an angel ornament when I’m travelling. I have angels from all over the world and every one has a story. It’s a great way to re-live those fond memories.”

go out every year. It’s more important to me to create beautiful scenes and vignettes, and you can’t always do that if you’re trying to incorporate everything.” Heather says she begins to pull out decorations in midNovember and starts to get organized with her plans for the various vignettes. Around December 10th, Heather puts up the tree (real, of course) and the last touches go on around the house. But by Boxing Day, the takedown has already begun and by New Year’s Day, there isn’t a trace left and everything has been safely tucked back into boxes for the following year. “It’s always a little sad, but because we live in Victoria, I always declare that day the first day of spring and it helps to bring my spirits up,” laughs Heather.

Delicious drinks to keep you warm and cozy this winter

Winter

Warmers By Tess van Straaten

Vis-à -Vis’ Calvados Toddy

S

itting at the bar of the Oak Bay Beach Hotel’s Snug Pub on a stormy winter day, I slowly sip a delicious drink that warms me from the inside out. It’s a sazerac, which is a New Orleans version of a whiskey or cognac cocktail. The Snug’s concoction, called a winter sazerac, is made from rye, Fernet-Branca bitters, and spicy cinnamon and clove syrup. “I’m a big fan of simple, classic cocktails and this is just a more modernized, wintry version,” says Oak Bay Beach Hotel food and beverage manger Christian Sealey. “Rather than the traditional addition of Peychaud’s bitters and a sugar cube, I add Fernet-Branca and the cinnamon/clove syrup. It’s the perfect winter warmer because it warms the soul!” A short stroll away, at Vis-à-Vis Bouchon & Bar on Oak Bay Avenue, I sample their winter hot toddy offering — a tart and lemony Calvados toddy. “This cocktail was created by Sylvain Gorron, who used to work for us,” explains Vis-à-Vis and Penning Farthing Pub manager Nancy Stewart. “He’s from Bordeaux and travels the world with his partner. The Calvados adds a lovely sophisticated flavour to our hot toddy.” Sitting outside on the patio, warmed by the overheat heaters, I sip this distinctly different winter warmer, which is made from apple brandy, lemon juice and syrup. Fortified against the cold, I walk a few blocks to de’lish in South Oak Bay for a non-alcoholic, flu-fighting elixir. “This is a great flu-buster, which is how it came around for us to serve it in the shop,” explains de’lish co-owner Mark Davies. “Customers coming in with colds and flu actually inspired it and it’s a healthy alternative to apple cider. An elixir a day keeps the doctor away!”

OAK BAY INSIDER

Lucky number five and Oak Bay’s coat of arms

G

Christopher Causton was Mayor of Oak Bay for 15 years. He’s now a captain and goodwill ambassador for Victoria Harbour Ferries. Educated at a university in Scotland, he likes to fly flags in his spare time.

uy Fawkes would have argued that the fifth of the month was not lucky for him — but it has been for Oak Bay. The Municipality had, almost since its founding, a crest which even today is appropriate. With a peaceful scene of ocean, trees and a sailing boat in the foreground and a snow-capped Mount Baker in the background, many credit Frances Rattenbury with the design. It’s certainly the view you see standing at Glenlyon Norfolk School’s junior campus, originally the site of his home on Beach Drive. Until its 50th anniversary, this was Oak Bay’s crest. Then, in 1956, it underwent some subtle changes but basically stayed the same until 1979. John Goult, an Oak Bay alderman (councillor) at the time, had made inquiries in London about whether the seaside town could get its own registered coat of arms. And thus, on February 5, 1979, Mayor Brian May Douglas Smith petitioned London and Edinburgh for a unique coat of arms. British heraldry was first codified in the 13th century and Lord Lyon King of Arms, in Edinburgh, is responsible for regulating all heraldry. Correspondence flowed between Scotland and Oak Bay. The Municipality wanted a Scottish Coat of Arms to protect Oak Bay against anyone misusing its coat of arms. The Scottish court had enviable powers to seize property — and still does — where there is misuse of heraldry. Then, on March 5, 1981, Oak Bay received word that its request had been granted and

on April 5, 1981, Lieutenant-Governor Henry Bell-Irving officially granted Oak Bay its new coat of arms. If you’re ever in Edinburgh, you can look up our coat of arms. It’s on the 35th page of the 62nd volume of the public register of all Arms and bearings in Scotland. So what does it look like? At the top is a red crown of bricks set with silver mortar to represent the walls of a city (not, it should be noted, a tweed curtain!). Next is a green chaplet of oak leaves and bay leaves with acorns. This is called a ‘canting charge’, which is a pictorial representation of the Oak Bay name. Next are two maple leaves to signify the town is in Canada. In the centre is a gold heraldic lion on an azure background signifying the Municipality’s British origins and its Island nature. The lion, technically a morse, has a fishtail giving a clue to its physical location by the sea. At the bottom is the motto, Sub Quercu Felicitas, meaning ‘under the oaks good fortune.’ On the fifth of November 2018, Oak Bay’s new mayor and council were sworn in and behind their chairs was a picture of the Queen and our coat of arms. And while the municipality now uses a more modern oak leaf logo, we still have our coat of arms. Aside from City Hall, there’s one other place you can see it on a flag — at the corner of Beach and Transit — but only on the fifth of each month.

OAK BAY HISTORY

What’s in a name? A winter walk into Oak Bay history from Uplands Park to the Victoria Golf Club By Ivan Watson

A

long Heron Street in a quiet residential neighbourhood near Willows Beach, a towering, centuriesold oak tree juts out into the road, forcing the pavement to curve around it. Many years ago, I was told the tree’s remarkable survival story by an older resident who had lived on the street in the 1940s. “When they first paved the dirt road, removal crews came with the intention of cutting the tree down,” she recalled. “But the housewives wouldn’t stand for it and formed a human chain around the base of the tree. Eventually, the workmen backed off and they built the road right around the tree. We were all very proud of that achievement!” From street names to vintage gateposts, many more intriguing clues remind us of Oak Bay’s unique community story. A perfect way to learn more is to walk the four kilometres from Cattle Point to Victoria Golf Club, stopping occasionally to ponder the many historical reminders along the way. I begin at Cattle Point, where rocky bluffs overlook Willows Beach and the snowcapped peaks of Mount Baker in the distance. In the waters below, between 1860 and 1910, cattle

were pushed overboard from paddle-steamers to avoid local duties — a practice which gave the area its name. The strongest swam ashore and were herded at nearby Uplands Farm. In 2013, Cattle Point was designated the first urban star park in western Canada, recognizing the area’s relative lack of light pollution. The surrounding environs are dominated by the 76 acres of Uplands Park, which was established in 1946 and one of Canada’s earliest protected areas in an urban environment. Here, woodland trails and the natural Garry Oak ecosystem immerse walkers in an untouched wilderness at the heart of one of Canada’s most upscale residential neighbourhoods. The edge of the park is anchored by Oak Bay’s Cenotaph, built in 1948. Its centerpiece is a granite and concrete mother figure, rising nine feet high, head bowed in mourning, with outstretched arms embracing Oak Bay’s Roll of Honour, which is engraved with the names of 97 men and one woman who gave their lives during the Second World War. Continue down the steps to the pedestrian-friendly Esplanade, constructed in the 1950s, which links Uplands Park

to Willows Park along the shoreline of Willows Beach. The Songhees once had a thriving village here with log houses along the shore. They called Willows Beach Sitchanalth, referring to drift logs and trees lodged in the sand. The stately gates at the park’s Beach Drive entrance were designed by renowned architect Samuel Maclure and came from Oak Bay Farm — the pioneer estate of John Sylvester and Mary Tod Bowker. Moved to their present location in 1932, the gates have greeted visitors to the park ever since. Directly across the street, a pedestrian laneway connects to Lincoln Road (formerly Seagull Street), which becomes Heron Street at the turn. Long-time residents recall that a lone great blue heron settled into a tree on the street about 20 years ago and stayed for several years, a namesake guest they nicknamed ‘Harry’. Take a short detour to nearby Estevan Village — which is the commercial hub of the Willows neighbourhood, featuring boutique shops and popular eateries such as The Village Restaurant and Willows Galley, which is famous for its fish and chips and ice cream and housed in a small building that started off as a grocery store in the 1920s. Estevan Avenue was first named Olympia and then Connaught Avenue, and the current name either refers to the 16th century Spanish explorer Esteban de Dorantes or the ship G.C.S Estevan, a federal lighthouse tender built in 1913. Returning to Beach Drive, originally called Mount Baker Avenue and Shore Road, the route meanders past stately heritage homes including one with an attractive wroughtiron fence with a striking design of English roses, Scottish thistle and Irish clovers that was inspiration for the logo of the Bard and Banker pub downtown. Continuing past Dalhousie Street, which was once called Seaview Avenue, and Cavendish Avenue, which was formerly Beachway Avenue, Beach Drive crosses over Bowker Creek before reaching the seaside campus of Glenlyon Norfolk School. Originally the grand estate of famed architect Francis Rattenbury, who designed the British Columbia Parliament Buildings, the sprawling property was purchased in 1935 by school founder Major Ian Simpson after Rattenbury was murdered by his second wife’s jealous lover in Bournemouth, England. Former GNS headmaster Keith Walker told me years ago that the school’s archives contains the letter confirming the sale of the property, posted from Eng-

land, which arrived in Victoria just days after the murder! Past the school, Beach Drive winds around an expansive bay towards Queens’ Park, which used to be called Marina Park. It was renamed in 2002 in honour of Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden Jubilee and the Queen Mother, who died that same year. Across the street, the Rudyard Kipling apartments were built in 1962 after the demolition of the Tudor-style Old Charming Inn, which hosted the famous poet in 1907. After a night of drinking, Kipling penned an ode to his evening revels at a desk in the lobby. Beach Drive meanders past the Oak Bay Marina towards

Cattle Point & Uplands Park

the peaceful Oak Bay Native Plant Garden across from the Oak Bay Beach Hotel. It is the last remnant of the grand gardens of the Arden estate owned by Hugo and Ada Beaven. Ada was the daughter of J.D. Pemberton — one of Oak Bay’s original four private landowners — and Hugo was the son of former B.C. Premier Robert Beaven. In 1939, Mrs. Beaven donated the property for use as a park. At this historic route’s end is the Victoria Golf Club, which was founded in 1893 and is the oldest golf course in Canada in its original location. In the 1890s, Oak Bay was being modeled after the famous seaside towns of England with the golf course, streetcar line, Mount Baker hotel, Windsor Park, and local street names of Margate, Newport, and Brighton all added to promote the seaside resort ambience. The golf club even has its very own ghost story, the result of a 1936 murder on the course. Local legend says that ringing the bell located near the seventh hole three times will summon a ghostly presence. For those less inclined to the occult, a leisurely stroll in the area will summon the friendlier ghosts of Oak Bay’s history. The distance between Cattle Point and Victoria Golf Course may be a mere four kilometres, but the route encompasses an entire universe of intriguing clues and curiosities from Oak Bay’s past that are hiding in plain sight.

OAK BAY TRAVEL

The stunning Oaxaca skyline

Merry Mexico Escaping the hustle of the holidays for some sun, fun, and captivating culture By Joseph Blake Photos by Lynne Milnes

M

y wife, Lynne, and I love to go to Mexico over the Christmas holidays. We’ve holidayed there almost a dozen times since the early 1980s when we first visited Cabo San Lucas and fell in love with Mexico and its people. Back then, there was only one hotel on the beach in the tiny fishing village, and it was completely booked with vacationing tourists. So, we took Spartan fisherman’s quarters across the street for $1 a night, bought screening, and taped it over the hole in the bedroom wall that served as a window. It was bliss. Since then, we’ve visited Mexico City

several times, which is our gateway to all the towns and cities in the interior we love. We’ve holidayed in Queretaro, Patzcuaro, Guanajuato, and our two favourites — Oaxaca and San Miguel de Allende. In 2018, San Miguel and Oaxaca were chosen the first and second best cities in the world by Travel + Leisure Magazine. We’ve visited both beautiful, colonial hot spots during the season several times, including two house exchanges in San Miguel. A house exchange usually lets a traveller get a little deeper into a city’s soul. Our San Miguel exchanges were on the edge of town, away from the centre’s vibrancy and community, but we used San Miguel Christmas Tree

the walk through the dusty neighborhoods to see another view of the charming city and walk off big, delicious meals in the city’s fine restaurants. Walking is a great way to see San Miguel’s 16th century architectural charms, its vibrant colours and cobble stone streets strewn with sweet jacaranda and walltopping bougainvillea, and its towering gothic cathedral in the shade of the central square’s bustle. Each night during the week before Christmas, the city’s smaller churches send posadas, processions of their congregation shuffling and singing behind living reenactments of Jesus’ birth, through the streets toward San Miguel’s central square, El Jardin Principal. Children dressed as Joseph, Mary, Archangel Michael, wise men, and shepherds share a stable in the back of a slow moving truck with sheep and goats while a ragged brass band marches behind the truck playing a dirge-like tune over and over and the congregation sings along.

San Miguel is a culturally rich and romantic home away from home over the holiday season. There is a large contingent of gringos, mostly Americans, and they organize fundraising for local charities with house and garden tours, a film series, a large library with a good coffee shop, colonial history tours, and an outstanding classical music festival with free concerts. One year, we caught a New Year’s Eve performance by the great Canadian cellist Shauna Rolston and enjoyed fireworks in the square after the concert with the musician and her family. Another evening at Teatro Angela Peralta, we heard veteran Tonight Show bandleader and trumpeter Doc Severson and his superb Mexican jazz combo. Nearby, Petite Four has some of the most delicious coffee and croissants I’ve ever tasted. There are lots of great restaurants dishing up modern fusions of Mexican, Italian, Peruvian, French, Spanish and Japanese cuisine, and there are teeming, bountiful, outdoor markets.

There’s also a world-class orchid and botanical garden, hot springs and swimming resorts a taxi ride out of town, as well as my favourite chocolate and churros joint — Cafe San Augustine. It has a campy buzz that grows out of its Mexican soap opera founder’s theatrical sensibility and high-caffeine fuel. Did I mention Mexico has great coffee? We did another house exchange last year, enjoying a fourth floor condo in a tower on the beach just out of town in Baja’s sleepy capital of La Paz. Our seasonal beach holidays in Barra de Navidad and Puerto Vallarta were also fun and insightful, each uniquely inspiring and enriched by the local culture. An afternoon bus ride away from Puerto Vallarta’s beach scene took us into the interior and another colonial gem beneath an active, smoking volcano — the beautiful little town of Colima. We sat at a table on the central square admiring the volcano and watched a family of black and silver-decked rancheros ride their horses up to the covered patio and sit down to eat a huge Christmas feast. We only stayed a couple of days in Colima, but I’m glad we did, because there have been reports of heavy drug-gang warfare now 15 years later. La Paz was reportedly in the midst of a similar gang war when we celebrated the season there last year, but we stayed in our condo at night watching Netflix, spent our days eating lobster and other local seafood in some very good beach restaurants, shared La Paz with mostly Mexican tourists, and enjoyed the slightly-depressed shopping streets most welcome lack of holiday hustle. One of my favourite spots, by far, is Oaxaca. The city is a cultural jewel with a large student population in the centre of a sprawling mountainous state also called Oaxaca. In isolated villages in the hills and mountains surrounding the capital, more than two dozen languages and distinct art forms thrive. The Regional Association of Craftswomen of Oaxaca help aid the arts and craft work of ethnic groups with raw materials, sales support. Oaxaca’s food scene is world-renowned. The cuisine’s trademark mole sauces are complex and exquisite, as are the myriad varieties of local mezcal, made from agave. Casa Oaxaca Restauante features delicious, adventurous regional dishes celebrating Oaxaca’s Spanish-Indigenous marriage of cuisines, as well as the state’s nine micro-climates, 500 edible herbs, and 60 agave varieties. From hiking tours in the countryside where we watched a village preparing for a New Year’s feast to a taxi ride to the town of Etla on market day for a real taste of old Mexico, to night spots like Mesquite where we sipped traditional cocktails while enjoying corn soup, tiny succulent tacos, and a sparkling view of the city at twilight, Mexico has a way of surprising you. On our way back to the hotel that night, we experienced more of Mexico’s captivating culture after running into a street-clearing wedding party complete with a brass band, towering puppet-headed dancers, and a best man passing out mezcal shots. Feliz Navidad and Viva Mexico!
