A Castlegar company has fabricated and installed a new elevated viewing platform and boardwalk over the spawning channel at Kokanee Creek. This platform will provide improved viewing and safety for the public when visiting the spawning channel. Sorenson Excavating did the work over the winter and spring. The total cost for the new boardwalk structure was $446,647. In addition to the dedicated viewing platform, BC Parks will be instituting some additional measures to ensure public safety at the spawning channel. These restrictions are in effect when kokanee spawning is occurring in the channel, between now Sept. 30. Dogs are not permitted on the boardwalk or the trails adjacent to the spawning channel during the kokanee spawning period. The presence of dogs, even when on a leash, can agitate bears and cause aggressive or defensive reactions by bears. In addition, the presence of dogs can cause stress to bears and prevent them from accessing important feeding areas along the spawning channel.

The second phase of the Columbia Avenue complete streets project is now underway. The newly affected area is between 15th Street and 17th Street on Columbia Avenue. The intersection at 15th and Columbia will temporarily become an uncontrolled intersection as crews remove light standards, upgrade the utilities and conduct utility tie-ins. At any intersection where a yield or stop sign is present, drivers facing the sign must yield the right of way to any other motorist approaching the intersection. If you
are at a stop sign you must yield to vehicles and pedestrians and may not proceed until it is safe. You must yield the right of way to any highway construction or maintenance vehicles that have their warning lights in operation. There will still be construction from 13th to 15th while crews install sidewalks, gutters, tree cells and bike paths. A water truck will continue to water areas where dust is present both on Columbia Avenue and its side streets. Other trades are now onsite. Motorists, cyclists and pedestrians are encouraged to use caution when travelling this route.
