Welcome to Local Hero Awards 2018

L

Chris Read, Marine Harvest Canada

ocal Hero is a project that celebrates and recognizes amazing individuals from Campbell River and surrounding area for performing exceptional acts of service that are selfless and courageous that make our community such a vibrant and rewarding place to live and work.

Our inaugural Campbell River Mirror and Marine Harvest Local Hero celebration was held on May 31 at the Campbell River No. 1 Fire Hall on Dogwood with 31 individuals being recognized in 12 categories. All were nominated by members of the community.

It was an emotional gala evening of moving stories, wonderful people and an expression of a community’s gratitude for the contributions these admirable people made to the life of this region. Artur Ciastkowski, the publisher of Campbell River Mirror would like to thank all of the sponsors,

community partners and event sponsors and partners who have made this event possible. Please enjoy this commemorative issue where you can learn more about our heroes. If you know a local hero you can start nominating them for next year at hero.campbellrivermirror.com.

ERIC KURPIELA

ANDREA STAPFF

Eric Kurpiela is a jock of all trades coaching kids in a number of sports. Regardless of the field or arena, it’s all done for one reason. “To make a difference in kids lives,” says Kurpiela who coaches softball, volleyball, and soccer. He recognizes that the lessons learned are not just limited to sports, they apply to life in general. And he knows the power of having someone who believes in you. “I want to see a kid hold their head up high, smile on their face, and understand their value,” Kurpiela says. It all comes down to TEAM, he says: “Together Everyone Achieves More.”

As coach with Strathcona Nordics Ski Club, Andrea Stapff mentors 45 kids, as well as 20 adults in the masters program. Originally from Ontario, she moved to Vancouver Island in 1979. A skier and a top-level rower, she represented Canada in two Olympics and loves working with young people, especially when they have those “a-ha” moments. “They’re sponges,” she says. “They’re challenging, they’re frustrating, they’re amazing.”

McDONALD’S

TOP HONOUR

JOHN JEPSON

After goalposts, the thing you’ll see the most on the sidelines of Campbell River soccer fields is coach John Jepson. Between coaching highschool soccer and coaching and playing adult soccer, Jepson has put unaccountable hours into the sport in Campbell River. His dedication to the game is unmatched but it’s not the sport itself that drives Jepson. Soccer is as much a vehicle for Jepson as it is for the athletes that play the game under his tutelage. “It’s always nice to be able to win but for me, (when) coaching, you’re put in a position when, at times, you are more powerful than a parent. So you are in a very privileged position and, thereby, I use soccer, like, in

teaching, as a vehicle to teach values and I always go back to early teaching college (where) there’s a quote: ‘sport is a microcosm of society,’” Jepson says. “I am given this privileged position where I am teaching how to play soccer. Equally important is teaching how to be a good person and that’s ultimately the goal.” He often sees the fruits of his labour when he bumps into former students and they talk about the wonderful times they had and how hard they were pushed to be the best they could be. And while his students have become the quality individuals his coach hopes them to be, his teams have also reached a level of excellence. His senior boys teams have been to the provincial championships five

times and the senior girls teams have been to 10. Jepson is proud of the “wonderful culture” of high quality soccer and fair play that has been instilled in the local soccer community, particularly at the high school level and what would make him proud is to see that continue after he’s no longer around. Meanwhile, one of the signature initiatives that Jepson has launched is taking his soccer teams on the road back to his native England and to Honolulu, Hawaii. Jepson has done 10 overseas tours of England and Honolulu. This past spring break being the most recent England tour. The first tour was in 1994 and went to Manchester, Jepson’s hometown.

EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR TOP HONOUR

CHUCK DESORCY How do you teach kids that they are connected to their environment? Chuck Desorcy opens that door by asking everyone who breathes and drinks water to put up their hands, and then he takes them out to the natural spaces in the city and puts them to work. “I’ve always thought that for people to understand their impacts on the environment, you need to get involved with the environment, get your hands in the dirt, look at the streams, look at the water flowing, look at the trees blowing,” he said. Desorcy was one of the founders of Greenways Land Trust and has been heavily involved ever since, especially when it comes to education. Desorcy originally started the Willow Creek Streamkeepers Society around the time his daughter was born and the family moved to Campbell River. He was an avid outdoorsman and had been noticing a change in the environment that he didn’t like. “I wanted there to be some of that stuff around for her when she got to be my age and her kids too,” he said. Educating other people to feel the same way is extremely important. During the spring and fall Desorcy goes out with 2-3 classes a week through Greenways Land Trust programs. They plant species in an attempt to diversify the habitat and they also remove invasive species. Other days they install bird houses or build snake of bug habitats, the whole while learning to respect and protect the environment.

NIKKI WATTS

MARLENE WOCKS

Nikki Watts received the highest amount of nominations from a diverse group of people in the community. Hundreds of animals have been rescued thanks to Watts’ strong commitment to their welfare. And her reasons for doing it are straightforward. “I just love animals,” she says. She is often out on the street looking for the animals herself. And there’s no time when she won’t make herself available. “Basically, I live this 24/7,” she says. “I still love it.”

Marlene Wocks is a mainstay of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #137 serving as president of the Ladies Auxiliary and working on other activities that benefit the branch and its fundraising efforts, most notably the Poppy Campaign. She’s also been a member of Citizens on Patrol and more recently volunteering at the Tidemark Theatre. The value of volunteering was instilled in Wocks at an early age by her parents who told her that if she wanted programs for her kids she had to get involved in making them happen. And so she took that advice to heart but in addition, she finds volunteering fulfilling personally. “I find anyways, that I can help where maybe somebody else couldn’t,” Wocks said. “I get satisfaction out of seeing what I have done.” A big benefit of her contributions is getting to know the other people she volunteers with. “I do enjoy the people I volunteer with, they’re a great bunch of people.”

CAROL CHAPMAN Carol Chapman is a proud, lifelong Campbell River resident and Canadian who for nearly two decades has combined these two passions by spearheading the community’s popular Canada Day celebrations. Years ago, she noticed celebrations were lagging and started a campaign to raise money for a fireworks display that now takes a back seat to no one one’s. “The first year I raised huge, huge money,” she says. “Canada Day is my heart and soul.” She has also made it a point that the event should spread throughout the community, from Campbellton

to Willow Point, and that any one from any walk of life can find something to do on July 1. “We’ve made every event for every kind of person,” she says. The result has been a celebration that brings in people from beyond the community, attracting visitors from around the Island, as the long line of red tail lights heading south at the end of the day suggests. Chapman credits the efforts of her team of eight people and partners such as the city for helping her make the event a success. Regarding all of her proj-

ects, she gives credit to the whole community for its help Canada Day is just one of her causes, as she divides her free time with other charities when she’s not busy running her salon of 39 years, A Cut Above. “I have four main fundraisers every year,” she said. These are the Tour de Rock Cops for Cancer, the BC Professional Firefighters’ Burn Fund, Paws for a Cause and Canada Day.

KAREN LUTZ

Karen Lutz has always been a fighter for the concept of “community.” When she was a teenager, she taught kickboxing. And when she aged out of foster care, she used that sport to keep herself afloat financially, teaching it to the kids in her Lower Mainland neighbourhood. But she found she liked the mentorship aspects of that more than the sport itself and soon found herself running preschools and children’s programs. These days she runs the StrongStart program at Sandowne Elementary. Everywhere she goes, she builds community. Whether it’s in her little portable behind an elemen-

tary school or in her neighbourhood. Last summer, she organized a block party where residents of her neighbourhood could come together and learn about each other, after which she formed a Facebook page for them to keep in contact virtually when they couldn’t get together in person. She formed a partnership with Greenways Land Trust to bring her little community at the StrongStart program out into nature to learn about ecosystems and keep them pristine. And her sense of community isn’t just about her local one. Karen’s idea for the “Rainbow and Unicorns Colour-

ing Kindness Act,” where people from our community – and many others – coloured unicorns and rainbows for a little girl in the Lower Mainland who was battling leukemia, bringing together communities all over the Island with one little girl in Richmond. “I don’t really feel like I do much, I just present an idea and everyone seems to be eager to jump onboard,” she says. “I just believe, honestly, that the more connected a community is, the safer that community is. I also believe ailments and violence begin with inner loneliness, and that inner loneliness is about people not being connected to their community.”

LINDA NAGLE

THOMAS PORSBORG

Linda Nagle is lucky enough to have the job most suited to her personality. As the recreation and culture program coordinator for the City of Campbell River, she brings people together to both be active and engage with each other, strengthening our community by fostering connections. Whether it’s advocating for the development of community gardens, coordinating activities in cooperation with the Immigrant Welcome Centre or running recreational programming, she is, as one nominator called her, “like an eager, multitasking octopus with countless arms reaching out to do good for our community and make it thrive.”

Thomas Porsborg is a self-described “forester and mountain biker.” He’s been building and maintaining trails for the last 30 years, since – aside from a bit of paddle boarding – most of his recreation occurs on trails, whether it be hiking, running, or riding a bike. He’s been involved with the Beaver Lodge Trust Committee – the committee that provides guidance on the management of the Beaver Lodge Forest Lands – since 2006 and has been involved with the Greenways Land Trust Adopt-a-Trail Program in the Beaver Lodge Forest since 2013. Through this program, he maintains a couple of trails in the Beaver Lodge by himself, but also leads trail maintenance workshops for the other trail adopters, allowing him to pass on his knowledge of sustainable trail design and maintenance, which then increases the volunteer capacity within the Community. “More hands make light work,” he says.

RHIANNON WAFFLE

Steve Sierzputowski became involved in volunteering with Search & Rescue while belonging to the Venture-Scout organization in Sault Sainte Marie, Ont. way back in the early 1980s. “My childhood friend, who had been posted here with the RCMP and had also belonged to the Sault SAR group, suggested that I join the young Campbell River SAR society since he worked with Don McInnes, one of the founding members, as a way to meet people and get involved,” Sierzputowski says, and he’s been with the organization ever since. In his nearly 40 years with the organization, he’s seen Campbell River SAR grow from a core of six or seven to about 40 and from a call volume of 10-12 per year to over 50. “It is very rewarding to bring peoples’ loved-ones home,” he says.

Waffle has been a dispatcher for North Island 911 for seven years, and she wouldn’t have it any other way. “Sure, there are tough days,” she says, “but we have an amazing team and support system, and it’s my way of helping, which is something I think is important. We should all help a little more.” Some might say the person taking the initial emergency call is the most important person in the chain of emergency services, but Rhiannon doesn’t see it that way at all. “We all have to work together to be successful and we all have to do what we can do. Those guys out there who jump in the raging water or run into the fire…I couldn’t do that.” But she can certainly get them going where they need to be when they’re needed.

COAST GUARD TEAM: Dennis Kolk, Paul Nestman, Phil Hawkins and Huw Davies As one of two crews that man the Cape Palmerston – the Coast Guard vessel that serves the Campbell River and coastal islands/mainland inlets of our region – Paul Nestman, Huw Davies, Phil Hawkins and Dennis Kolk have your back if you’re out on the water. Or even on land, for that matter. “I think one of the things people maybe don’t realize is how much of our work actually happens on shore,” Davies says, recounting a recent experience where the crew was dispatched to MedEvac someone having a stroke, only to find out there was a grizzly bear hanging out on the trail that led to the cabin they needed to get to, making the issue slightly more complicated.

But yes, if there’s a problem out on the water, be it a medical emergency, an environmental situation like a fuel spill, a navigational beacon in need of maintenance or replacement, these are the people who go out to remedy it. Working two weeks on, two weeks off, each crew is based at the Coast Guard offices at the Coast Discovery Marina (soon to relocate to the newly revitalized docks at the government wharf), they are on-call 24 hours a day for any situation they’re equipped for. Which is most of them. In being named the winner of this award, they say they are sharing it not only with the other Coast Guard

team, but also the rest of the emergency services agencies around the community, as well. “We kind of like to fly under the radar,” Huw says. “If it was me, I would have nominated the ambulance crews. The grind that those ambulance crews do every day and the circumstances they are in and the drama they see – those guys are heads and shoulders above every other resource in the community.” Photo from left to right: Dennis Kolk, Paul Nestman, Phil Hawkins and Huw Davies

GERRY MILLER Everybody hopes that in an emergency situation they will do the right thing. We all hope we’ll do what Gerry Miller did. Miller unselfishly plunged into a raging Storey Creek to pull a girl out who had been clinging to some bushes in the freezing water, desperately trying to not be swept away as she succumbed to hypothermia. She had already lost her friend and her friend’s father whom she had been riding an ATV with. The ATV had been overcome by the raging creek and two of the riders were swept away and did not survive. Miller was walking his dog in the Storey Creek area

on Jan. 21, the day after heavy rains hit central Vancouver Island. Those rains had swollen the normally small stream into a raging torrent. Miller was taking his dog Pearl for her regular walk when, as he was striking across an area of slash, he heard someone screaming. “I was halfway through the slash when I heard screaming from the creek,” Miller said. “I knew right away something was not right.” He dashed to the creekside and kept yelling trying to keep up communication as he attempted, running down the trail, to locate the voice.

He came upon the girl clinging for dear life in the creek and fearlessly jumped into the water and hauled her out. He wrapped her in his coat and instructed Pearl to stay with her while he ran for help. At a nearby house he had the homeowner call 911. Search and Rescue volunteers arrived to find Miller with the victim. He is a hero because he acted selflessly and immediately and if he had not, there would have been three deaths that day. But such is Miller’s degree of modesty, he still to this day feels regret that he had not been there sooner and could perhaps helped the other victims.

Sydney Boyle might be busy with sports, work and school, but that doesn’t stop the Grade 12 Carihi student from sharing her time with others. As an athlete, she’s taken part in basketball, soccer and track. Also an avid swimmer since her youngest days in Campbell River, she even teaches swimming and serves as a coach with the Killer Whales Swim Club. “Before I got a job through the swim club, I would also volunteer, just to kind of get into it,” she says. “You don’t want to jump in without knowing what you’re

doing.” Through a sports leadership class at school, she began volunteering with Special Olympics for its bowling program. She started in Grade 9, could not register for grades 10 and 11, but in her final year, is back and happy to see the same faces in Special Olympics. “It’s awesome, they all get to know you by name,” she says. Boyle also plans to keep helping out with Special Olympics after graduation. “Even though I won’t be in school, I think I’m going

to do it again because I loved it so much,” she says. She works at Strathcona Gardens, and through that she volunteered her time to help with the B.C. Elders Gathering in Campbell River last year. After graduation, she plans to stay at home for a year to work and take classes at NIC. Then, she wants to turn her passion for the water into a career by joining the Canadian Coast Guard, which will mix summer training with classes the rest of the year.

KRISANDRA RUFUS

Krisandra Rufus was motivated to start serving meals to those in need after a relative told her he was hungry and asked if she had anything to eat. “I said, ‘Isn’t there a dinner program and he said no,’” she says. “I was more surprised than shocked.” Rufus started to realize that there were many in the community who also did not have an easy time finding a healthy meal. Born in Alert Bay and raised in Vancouver, she first came to the Campbell River area in her mid-teens. She moved around a bit more and then returned in

her mid-20s. After she realized the need in the community, she started the Grassroots Kind Hearts Society in April 2015, serving the food to people right out in the elements on weekends. “When I started, we were outside,” she said. “We were hoping we could get our own place.” It wasn’t easy, and she was told early on she would meet resistance from some in the community, but she persevered. She then moved it indoors and started serving

meals through the week. Now, she and other volunteers cook meals to be served out of the Radiant Life Church on Cypress Street. Rufus has raised funds through activities such as selling bannock at the market and running playoff hockey pools to cover the costs of the program. The program has its own website at http://www.grassrootskindhearts.org/about-us.html and a Facebook page. Through social media, volunteers stay in touch about what food they can cook for the menu throughout the week.

ALEX WITCOMBE

Alex Witcombe has brought many unexpected forms of life to Campbell River as public art over the last decade or so. He’s worked on murals and during the last few years he’s added driftwood as a medium, which he fashions into creatures such as foxes, dogs, raccoons, birds of prey, mammoths, dinosaurs, even aliens. Many of these now grace the shores of the community. Much of the work around the recent driftwood sculptures goes into finding the right pieces. He estimates he spends about 70 per cent of his work time on collecting material, but each piece is different so it’s hard to keep track of time.

“There is no actual set time on each piece,” he says. In 2015, he put together the Discovery Passage “ocean odyssey” mural in the city with friend Nick Hutton-Jay at the BC Centre for Aquatic Health Science. “It was part of a facade improvement program,” he says. Last year, Witcombe partnered with Greenways Land Trust to raise $2,500 for their Christmas Fundraiser by building a huge customized West-Coast-themed driftwood mural called Whiskey’s Run. “It turned out really cool, way better than I expected,” he says.

Greenways even received another donation recently from a woman who had so much fun looking for Fergus the Fox around the trails of the Beaver Lodge Lands. Witcombe has received commissions, but he really views the public art as a gift. “I never ask for donations for the public art,” he says. As far as what’s next, Witcombe hopes to put together some larger, more substantial pieces and is looking into setting up a crowdfunding site to help with his projects.

Whether it’s initiating a new community-based arts program through a non-profit that helps underprivileged youth or helping an individual artist fill out a grant application, Blackburn is one of the people Campbell River is luckiest to have in its corner supporting the arts.

JERRY FLETCHER

JACOB KOOMEN

From the age of 12, Jerry Fletcher has been involved in volunteering here in Campbell River, from teaching gymnastics to coaching football, cleaning Centennial Pool as well as serving as president of both the Men’s Hockey League and Minor Baseball. In more recent years, Fletcher has taken up roles with the board of directors of the Beaver Lodge Forest Lands, Greenways Land Trust, Discovery Passage Aquarium, the Pier Street Business Association, the Pacific Salmon Foundation and more.

Jacob Koomen says he was pretty surprised when he was nominated for the Seniors Champion Award. “I mean, it’s not like I’m ashamed to be a senior. I definitely fit into that category,” he says with a laugh, “but I guess it’s just that raising money for cancer research doesn’t just help seniors. It’s for everybody.” Koomen is on the far side of 70 these days, but he still does at least one major bike ride every year raising money for cancer research. Last year he went across Canada – 13,500 km.

MARY LAZARSKI

“Oh, no, no, no, no. You’ll have to go find somebody else,” Mary Lazarski said when she was told she’d been shortlisted for a Local Hero Award. “I just play the piano.” Well, that’s not entirely true, Mary. When Lazarski came to Campbell River in 1989 to retire, she wanted to keep helping. She’d been a school teacher for more than 20 years, and she really got a lot out of helping people, so she signed up to be part of the Hospital Auxiliary. She spends Tuesday mornings in the Wellness Centre at the hospital. She also does hospice work with the Campbell River

Hospice Society. And yes, once a week, she also plays piano at Yucalta Lodge. She first signed up to volunteer in our community in 1990, just a month or so after she arrived in town at Christmas, “and I’ve been around the hospital ever since,” she says. “I’m probably the oldest one around there, including a lot of the patients,” she adds with a laugh. It’s just her way to give back to the world. “It’s also wonderful for me, though,” she admits. “I get the chance to meet all kinds of folks of all ages, especially in the Wellness Centre, who have all kinds

of health problems, and it’s nice to meet them and make them a cup of tea and give them a cookie. It feels nice to make someone’s day a little more pleasant. I feel very lucky to have the association I have with the Hospital auxiliary. It makes my life complete.” And since she likes to play the piano, it was a natural fit when Yucalta Lodge was looking for someone to do that for the residents. “That’s really nice,” Lazarski says, “because I like doing it, and they seem to like when I do it, and they don’t get upset when I make mistakes.”

SANDRA MILLIGAN The first time Sandra Milligan marched with a placard was to protest the Walmart development when it was proposed to be next to the Campbell River estuary. “That really galvanized the community and really brought the community’s value for the Campbell River in particular, but for natural spaces in general, and that sort of put me in a leadership role for the first time,” she said. Milligan has been volunteering with Greenways Land Trust since moving to Campbell River in 2003 and has been president of the society for the last few years. She also sits on the BC Hydro Liason Commission and regularly does presentations on a variety of topics for Elder College and schools within the community. Growing up, her parents were always volunteering, so as an adult that was something Milligan sought out wherever she lived. She first learned about engaging in the political process to make change when she was living in Mill Bay. She read a book that recommended looking over the official community plan as that was a good way to gauge the community’s values; are they planning on protecting streams or planting trees? She continued along that path when she moved to Campbell River, setting up a Smart Growth workshop for the mayor, councillors and city planner to attend. “It was really the start of engaging with city council and educating about the benefits of developing in the least detrimental way, in a way that really improves your community,” she said. And she has continued using the political process to make change since then.

NIKKI WATTS Nikki Watts is the best friend animals in Campbell River could ever have. The Campbell River woman works tirelessly for the safety and welfare of animals in the Campbell River area reuniting lost pets with their owners. She is the force behind the Lost and Found Animals of Campbell River Facebook page that serves as action central for people who have lost their pets or people who have found lost pets and want to reunite them with their owners. She is also a volunteer with Campbell River Partners for Animal Welfare Society (CRPAWS) that helps feral cat colonies with trapping for spay and neuter programs,

the feeding and care of those colonies and fostering, socializing and finding homes for cats and kittens that are deemed adoptable. Hundreds of animals have been rescued thanks to Watts’ strong commitment to their welfare. And her reasons for doing it are straightforward. “I just love animals,” she says. The services she and her fellow volunteers started have evolved into a multi-faceted animal assistance programs. She also gets a great deal of satisfaction from helping the owners of the animals as well. Nothing feels better than reuniting a pet with its owner.

“Because when you lose an animal, it’s part of your family, it’s like (losing) a kid,” Watts says. Watts is no sit back and direct type of person, she rolls up her sleeves and gets stuck into helping. She is often out on the street looking for the animals herself when she gets word that one has gone missing. And there’s no time when she won’t make herself available. “Basically, I live this 24/7,” she says. “But I like it. I still love it.” But Watts is quick to point out that it is not just her. This is a whole community of people concerned about animal welfare and they all work together for the common goal.

TOM ROBINSON

As local SPCA branch manager, Stephanie Arkwright works to find good homes for animals and oversees the other programs for animal welfare. She’s held the position for five years, though she started with the SPCA in 2001 through a summer job. “The biggest thing for me is feeling like I’m making a difference,” she says. “The animals are also a perk. I’m very passionate about their welfare.”

After retiring from a career in banking, many foster kids in town have learned to bank on Tom Robinson. That’s because the Campbell River man has opened his home to many foster children, many of them of First Nations heritage. He’s become a rock for many of these youths at risk who face many traumas in their lives. He currently has permanent responsibility for three youths but he’s “always had a houseful of kids.” He’s been fostering children for nearly a decade and has an outstanding reputation in the community but his motivation is simple. “I just love providing a safe, stable environment where kids can be kids and not worry about all the other pressures in life,” Robinson says.
