ur A-List feature is here again and it’s bigger and more popular than ever. We again received an overwhelming number of responses to our poll, and herein we will present the results of the voting. At the risk of sounding repetitive year after year, one of my favourite things about Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows is the various organizations and their members who dedicate countless hours to bettering our communities, from the Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation’s annual gala and Fund Run, to the Maple Ridge Community Foundation and its Community Chest program, the Rotary Clubs and their annual Duck Race, not to mention the Friends in Need Food Bank, and those tasked with caring for our rivers and streams, ARMS and KEEPS. What would Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows be without all of them and their tireless volunteers? Local residents know what I’m talking about, which is why you recognized so many of them again in this year’s edition of the A-List. • Caribbean Fest: “One love, one heart – let’s get together and feel all right” – those words hint about what Caribbean Festival is all about. It takes place every August and celebrates the music and foods of the Caribbean Islands. Every year the sounds of the islands delight Maple Ridge. The event is a foodie’s paradise, with everything Caribbean from jerk chicken to curried goat. It now takes place at Albion Fairgrounds because of its growing popularity. • Haney Farmers Market: Every Saturday morning from May to October, you know there's a place that's close by where you can get farm-fresh food within walking distance in the downtown. Whether it's fresh, baked goodies, homemade jams or wines, seafood, poultry or fresh eggs, the display that sets up in Memorial Peace Park shows the bounty of our area. Haney Farmers Market opens in early May and goes to early October, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the downtown. • Vistas Run: This year was the 20th year for the event that draws walkers and runners from across the Lower Mainland who participate year after year in support of Ridge Meadows Hospice Society. The run also

brings personal stories of how the Ridge Meadows Hospice Society has touched people in the community. Having raised upwards of $330,000 to date, the Vistas Run is a significant annual fundraiser for the hospice society. • Pitt Meadows Day: Somehow it seems every Pitt Meadows Day Parade takes place in sunshine to allow a perfect parade down Harris Road. The event, which usually takes place in early June, has been going on for 76 years after originally starting as a strawberry tea in the 1930s during the Great Depression. Following the parade, there are kids' games and entertainment for all. Next year, make sure you check out a long-standing Pitt Meadows tradition.

My A-List: Mayor Nicole Read My A-List: Mayor John Becker

n behalf of all of us on C o u n cil I would like to congratulate the winners of the annual ‘A-List’ contest sponsored by The News. These kinds of programs are a great way to highlight the amazing businesses we have in the community. When our family first arrived in Maple Ridge our new neighbours were a treasure trove of great recommendations of places to dine, places to shop and local parks and attractions that we should visit. All these years later I now share some of my favourite places when I have friends and family visit the community or when a new neighbour moves in. ‘Word of mouth’ recommendations are gold, and the ‘A-List’ represents the ultimate citizen guide to local entrepreneurs. One of the things that I find interesting about the annual ‘A-List’ is the mix of long time businesses and the sprinkling of newcomers that we see every year. There are two very different market forces at play here. Starting a new business is daunting, especially in the social media era. A new business needs a few months to find its mojo and

build relationships with customers. People should take note of the businesses that make the list in their first year of operation, because this reflects a remarkable accomplishment for the owners. The long time businesses that make the ‘A-List’ face a different business challenge. Keeping their business fresh and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction, while fending off the competition, takes a whole different mindset. Looking around town, and reading through the list, you see perennial winners who recognize that it takes a lot of work to cultivate a strong customer base and know the value in keeping those relationships strong. I love going out for dinner in our community, and there are now so many options on the style of food and the formality of the setting. I would encourage you to explore the businesses that you see on this list. From family dining adventures to ‘date night,’ you will find some real treasures that stack up to anything in the region. Let me conclude by saying that my absolute favourite thing about Maple Ridge is nature. We are surrounded by parks, trails, dykes and waterways that are as beautiful as anything you will find in BC. Get out and discover Maple Ridge with your friends and family. The ‘A-List’ is a great place to start. Mayor Nicole Read City of Maple Ridge

was pleased to be asked by The News to provide a brief summary of my own ‘A-List’ about the local community. Here are some things I like about our two communities: No. 7 – Our natural environment is only minutes away from all of us. Protection and enhancement of the natural environment has become a priority for both residents and local politicians alike. No. 6 – Regional connectivity. Both city councils are working hard to improve both the quantity and quality of public transit in the area. We have come a long way from the wait at the Albion Ferry to cross the river. No. 5 – Live, work and play. As the notion of a work-life balance has become more important, we have seen the greater opportunities for local employment. Commutes have been reduced to minutes instead of hours. No. 4 – Aging in place. Our two communities have recognized the aging demographic and have improved local engagement, programs and services for seniors through agencies like the Ridge Meadows Seniors Society and Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Community Services.

No. 3 – A focus on complete communities. Local governments, while still mandated to supply basic utilities services – police, fire and recreation – are now having to at least facilitate social service functions. Our two city councils are the closest and most immediate form of government contact for our residents. Through partnerships and aggressive advocacy, the attention of senior governments is being directed to these issues. No. 2 – Our youth. The desire of our young people to be included in the decision-making process is matched by a similar desire on the part of responsible decision makers to open the doors to empowerment. We need informed, collaborative decision making to become the norm so that the leaders of tomorrow are ready, willing and able to take up the challenge. No. 1 – The people. It’s always about the people. When asked about what’s best about the job of being mayor, I tell them it’s all about working with the people. Success as a mayor is measured not by low tax rates or public edifices, but rather in a robust and sustainable community where people take personal responsibility for their role in maintaining the health and strength of their community. • Arts Centre Theatre: It occupies a commanding place in beautiful Memorial Peace Park in downtown Maple Ridge, so why shouldn't the Arts Centre Theatre again be the top-ranked building? Walk through the glass doors and you're greeted with an art gallery on your left side, a wide staircase leading to the second floor to the right, and carpeted passages to the main theatre, as well as to the Genstar Theatre. The ACT, with ceiling-to-floor glass panels, is within easy walking distance of an eclectic mix of shops and restaurants. • Madeline Merlo is a country music star who was most recently nominated for female artist of the year at the 2017 Canadian Country Music Awards. She has had six singles off of her latest album called Free Soul, including Whatcha Wanna Do About It, that made the CMT’s Top 20 Country Music Chart, Sirius XM’s On The Horizon List and has had airplay across the United States. Merlo’s favourite song off the album is War Paint, the most added single on Canadian Country Radio for the week of June 29. The artist’s latest single is called Motel Flamingo, a fun song about tacky motels where “curtains smell like smoke and there is a lime green pool.” Merlo spent the month of May and the beginning of June opening for country star Dean Brody as he toured Western Canada for the launch of his new album

called Beautiful Freakshow. She is currently working on her second album. • Caden Knudson is a Garibaldi secondary grad who started playing the guitar eight years ago. His guitar teacher Mike Jackson got him interested in the delta blues and old folk music and also taught him to play the banjo. Knudson performs across the community, most notably helping out with the Kanaka Creek Coffeehouse open mic, but at other special events as well like the Maple Ridge Canada Day celebrations, the concert for Multiculturalism, Help Portrait and the Rotary Wine Festival and at the Haney Farmer’s Market, where he is also on the board of directors. • Nicole Willemsen is a classically trained soprano and is currently in the final year of her Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance at the University of British

Columbia. Nicole has been teaching voice lessons for the past 8 years from her home studio in Maple Ridge and is also currently teaching at Song of Stars School of Music in Vancouver. Nicole has grown up singing and performing in many different musical styles and genres and has competed at a provincial level. Nicole has a passion to help others discover their own unique voice and musical style. Nicole loves to see students of all levels and musical styles succeed through teaching proper singing techniques that provide a solid foundation for beautiful sound. Nicole’s students have gone on to achieve lead roles in various theatre productions, win local music competitions, and sing for the Vancouver Canucks and Vancouver Whitecaps.

Bad Moon Risin’, Los Furios and The Zola’s are the favourite local bands. • Bad Moon Risin’ is a Creedence Clearwater Revival tribute band formed in 2012 that plays all of the greats by John Fogerty and CCR. The show promises to appeal to fans young and old. • Los Furios is a high-energy rock/ska/reggae indie band that was formed in 2003. Since then they have acquired a devoted fan following and perform an intense mix of reggae, punk infused ska originals with a horn section. • The Zola’s are a Canadian indie rock band based in Vancouver. They are signed to Light Organ Records. The core of the band is Zachary Gray on vocals and guitar and Tom Dobrzanski on piano. They have three albums, Tic Toc Tic that was released in 2009, Ancient Mars that was released in 2012 and Swooner released in 2015. While working on the album Gray collaborated with Carly Rae Jepsen of Maple Ridge writing the song LA Hallucinations.

The annual Dessert Concert will feature the MRSS band and choir programs at The ACT Maple Ridge on Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at The ACT Box Office or by calling 604-476-2787. • The Thomas Haney secondary school band program is an exciting and vibrant place for young musicians. There are music classes for young upcoming students to THSS with an elementary band program and progression through their high school careers to the Senior Wind Ensemble for Grade 12 students. With the open education model, it allows students to receive individual lessons on their instrument and voice. The award-winning jazz band is the feature for all concerts and always has the audience invigorated at the end of the night. With four concerts a year the students get experiences in performing in front of an audience which is gratifying for the solo piano, voice, guitar, cello students along with the larger ensemble groups. The students also get the experience of traveling and performing in other countries around the world. It is a great honour to be recognized as an exciting and vibrant program here in the school district.

aribaldi secondary school, Maple Ridge secondary school and Thomas Haney secondary school are the favourite high school bands. • The Garibaldi band program is a place where kids want to be because they belong and they get to make music and have fun with other kids who think like them. Students in Grade 8 are offered both beginner and advanced band and have the opportunity to travel. This year the band went on an exchange trip to Ontario. There’s a whole culture to the music program at Garibaldi fostered by teacher and students alike. • The Maple Ridge secondary school band program has concert band classes from Grades 8 to 12, plus a beginning band program in nearby elementary schools. MRSS is also known for its excellent jazz band program. All the bands have performed very well in festivals such as the Kiwanis Fraser Valley Music Festival and the Whistler Music Festival and have travelled to Cuba, Disneyland and New York. He is an active composer, producer, clinician, and instructor. His students have won many prestigious awards and scholarships and many have continued on to professional teaching careers. Other students have developed successful professional performing careers in music including a major record label signing with Virgin Records, another with EMI Records, a Juno Award, as well as many television and radio performances. He is also a member of the Royal Conservatory of Music College of Examiners. • Melanie Scarcella holds her Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Music Education from Memorial University of Newfoundland. She moved to British Columbia in 1997 to pursue graduate studies at the University of Victoria. She

has been teaching since 1997 and has had a plethora of experiences teaching music as a general music specialist,choral director and band teacher. She is known for her energy and enthusiasm and her passion to ignite her students to find the joy of making music in an ensemble setting. • R e b e k a h B e l l embraces chaos along with creativity. She inspires students to push themselves and enjoy the challenge. Bell is now in her fourth year at Garibaldi secondary, coming to Maple Ridge from Whitehorse, Yukon Territories. Her ability to inspire her students is clearly seen in the growth of the music program, which is about four times the size it was when she started. Rebekah also performs as a jazz vocalist, plays French horn with the Maple Ridge Concert Band and both leads and plays saxophone with Golden Ears Jazz. Bell’s mission to expand the music program at Garibaldi secondary and has been collecting donations for the music department because it has grown dramatically in the last four years and is in need of new equipment.

takes a good five hours, and works up a sweat. It crosses streams, varies between well groomed paths, narrow trails and rocky roads. • West Canyon Trail: This trail starts slow but progresses to a more difficult hike but is totally worth the trip. The trail starts out easily enough with an easily graded gravel coated trail. Don't be lulled into a false sense of security soon after the trail transfers from gravel to a dry bed where it is all to easy to roll an ankle. The hike then gets progressively steeper until the gold creek lookout. Watch your step around there. The trail continues on until the 4.5 kilometre point where you have to go down a 25 foot loose embankment and up the other side by the means of a thick yellow rope. There used to be a cable bridge there. Alder flats campground is about 500 metres down the trail

• Golden Ears Lower Falls: Golden Ears offers spectacular views, and this is the easiest trail in the provincial park. It is an easy one hour (2.7 km) walk along Gold Creek to Lower Falls. The rocky beach about 20 minutes in is a beautiful spot to rest and relax. About halfway to the falls, part of the trail has been washed out and re-routed. If you stop at the bank of the creek and turn to look southwest, you get a great view of the mountains overlooking the creek. • Malcolm Knapp Research Forest: A wide variety of options for those who love to hike up the mountain side. Maple Ridge is home to a university run woodland known as the Malcolm Knapp Research Forest. There are four colour-coded loop trails in the forest. They all begin at the research forest gate and parking lot and loop back there. There is an easily deciphered map at the gate, which shows all of the trails in their corresponding colour. The red trail is listed as a 1.4 km, 45-minute hike, but it can be completed in much quicker time than that at a leisurely pace. It is a wide, groomed trail with a soft wood chip base that is ideal for running on. At the other end of the spectrum is the Blue trail which is a 6.5 km trek through the wilderness that

My A-List: Lisa Beare, MLA My A-List: Bob D’Eith, MLA Above all else, the people of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows are what makes this community special. The kindness and generosity of our residents brings us all closer together. In the few short months, John Horgan has been premier, we have already delivered on many of our promises to make life more affordable for British Columbians. Initiatives like the removal of tolls on the Golden Ears and Port Mann bridges, increasing income assistance by $100 a month, cutting MSP rates by 50 per cent, and decreasing the small business tax rate directly influence our community. This is just a start. I am honoured and humbled to represent the communities of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows in the Legislature. I am also excited by my new role as Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture. Stop by our community office or one of the many festivals or events in our community and say hello. his community is my home. It’s where I grew up, it’s where I went to school, and it’s where my husband and I are raising our daughter. Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows have so much to offer and I am proud to call this area home. One of my fondest childhood memories is going to Maple Ridge Park – whether strolling on the river path, spending hours playing in the park, or splashing in the spray park. Family gatherings at the park usually included a dip in the Alouette River to cool off on a hot day. Now, with my daughter Brinley, I find myself spending more time there and creating another generation of memories. My A-List: Rey Comeault

s a member of the Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows spor ts community for the past 22 years, I have had the pleasure of meeting many quality individuals.

It didn't take long before my kids also became very much involved in the community, as well. Through friendships made they too set roots in the community, adopting similar values and traditions that I once held dear many years ago.

Similar to others in our community who move to the area strictly based on the financial feasibility of home ownership, calling Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows home came very easily. Registering my children in Ridge Meadows minor associations of soccer, baseball, hockey and lacrosse, as well as a dance studio and gymnastics club providing, it was an environment where my family dynamic became ever so connected to the community. Success for my kids at these sports provided so much required physical activity, social growth, cognitive development, personal confidence and life-long lessons of structure and discipline.

As the current general manager of the Western Lacrosse Association Maple Ridge Burrards, I have the good fortune of seeing the support of the community required for the existence of a locally organized and managed senior sports organization. In many respects, the evolution of the Burrards has followed my personal path and experiences in the Ridge Meadows associations. When I first joined the lacrosse organization, we hadn't had much recent success. Relocated from Vancouver, where the storied franchise had much history, our organization was paving new roads based on the challenges in front of us. Through hard work, community support and the drafting of locally developed players, the Burrards made a significant breakthrough in winning the Western Lacrosse Association championship title for the first time in 2016.

The Burrards utilized the success from this championship and acquired even more talent, which in turn has stabilized the organization. Without a similar minded community, the senior A Burrards couldn't survive. The minor lacrosse association, which now boasts registration amongst the highest in our province, has proven to be a huge supporter of the senior burrards, forming a truly special partnership – a partnership that will surely continue to develop and flourish through the coming years. In essence, the community of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows attracts so many people to the area based on its affordability and proximity to Vancouver. The real secret to the exceptional livability and pride of the community is the way in which it comes together to organize and flourish.

Favourite sporting event

iK OktoberFAST was voted favourite sporting event, followed by watching the WLA’s Maple Ridge Burrards and taking part in the Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation’s annual Fund Run. OktoberFAST is a charity race put on by Athletes in Kind to raise money for families with children affected by cancer. The Burrards are one of the best teams in the Western Lacrosse Association, having won the league championship in 2016, only to be upset this year in the first round by the eventual winner, the New Westminster Salmonbellies. Meanwhile, the 14th annual Fund Run this past June raised close to $40,000 to help purchase essential equipment for Ridge Meadows Hospital. Since its inception, the run has raised $426,000.

Our community has cultivated youth who have turned into the leaders and contributing citizens that continue to make Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows an area of envy and excellence. Rey Comeault

aving grown up in Maple Ridge, I have seen this town go through tremendous growth and change over the past few decades. As our population continues to increase and development expands, one thing that has not been lost are the beautiful natural areas that we possess in our community.

We are fortunate to have a wide variety of green spaces that we are able to utilize during every season of the year. Whether it is taking a walk on the dikes with the mountains in the background, going for a hike in Golden Ears park, floating down the Alouette River, or swimming in Whonnock Lake, we are blessed to have access to a wide variety of parks and other natural settings throughout our community. The same places that I enjoyed as a child I am now able to take my own children to enjoy. I also grew up playing baseball in Maple Ridge, and there are a number of parks and fields that hold a special place in my

heart. In my younger days, I recall many games at Upper Maple Ridge Park and Harris Road. Later on, Albion was home to a pair of Western Canada Championship teams of which I was a part. Hammond Stadium, which opened in 2015, now gives us a field on which we can host premier baseball events as well as our competitive programs. Favourite team sport • Ridg e M eadow s Minor Ba s eball Association feature eight divisions, with kids ranging from six to 20 years old. The organization produces provincial contenders, such as the 2015 B.C. champion midget AAA team, and also hosts events like the Don Breu Memorial tournament, as well its annual Skills Day and Bat-a-thon.

In addition, it was home to Canadian hall of famer Larry Walker Jr. • Hockey in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows is one of the region’s most popular pastimes. The Ridge Meadows Minor Hockey Association is the third largest in the province, with about 1,200 players. It was recently chosen association of the

year from among 42 of those in the Pacific Coast region. The Meadow Ridge Female Minor Hockey Association features teams in seven divisions, from tyke to juvenile with 158 registered players. • The West Coast Auto Group FC and Albion FC are two local soccer associations that serve players in Maple Ridge and Pitt

Meadows. The WCAGFC have teams in provincial competition, and players accepting college scholarships. The huge organization has 3,500 members from under-four to adult, filling out the rosters of more than 250 teams. Albion is a young association, and it stresses long-term player development.

They are hidden gems of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. • For instance Gold Creek: This is a beautiful part of Golden Ears Provincial Park where there’s a creek and a campground that bears the name. The water is crystal clear, but be careful around the water. There have been many fatalities in the creek in recent years. • Lupita Mexican Foods: If you want a t a s te of old Mexico, there’s a place a little bit out of the way on Selkirk Avenue, just west of 224th Street in Maple Ridge. • The Pitt Meadows Marauders have a long and storied history of producing not only top notch talent, but top-notch students and school ambassadors. The team has won three provincial titles, including the thrilling 1989 championship team that upset two-time defending champs, the Richmond Colts, 92-77 in the semi-final and then beating cross-town rival Maple Ridge secondary 58-57 in the thrilling championship game. Former coach Rich Goulet was the first coach to win a “AAA” and “AA’ title. The team hosts its annual Air Force Tournament that draws a number of the province’s top teams to the region. • The Ridge Meadows Burrards have a storied history as one of the province’s most successful minor lacrosse associations. The minor system has graduated a number of players who have gone on to successful professional careers playing and coaching in the NLL as well as the WLA. The Burrards pride themselves on graduating players who then come back to work with local kids, who are consistently contending for provincial titles at every level, both male and female. They won the WLA championship in 2016. • The Ridge Meadows Bruins Rugby club strives to bring awareness to one of the

champions supporting dementia patients and their caregivers (and they are lots of fun). All the volunteers with our service clubs: youth, children’s and senior’s programs, festivals and more. Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows residents have a can-do attitude that really shines. Our local care homes – Chartwell Willow Retirement Community, Greystone Manor, Maple Ridge Seniors Village, Sunwood Senior Living Community and Wesbrooke Seniors Living Community – host free events with entertainment and food for seniors and support fundraisers. Simon from China Kitchen Restaurant has for many, many years generously hosted a free luncheon for all seniors during Seniors Week. Staff at Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Community Services do so much for so many, often with very little. From the receptionist to the executive director, they are the most dedicated and hard-working people around. I tip my hat to all the retail workers in our communities who take the time to talk to our seniors, smile and share a story, hold a door open, carry groceries to the car and become part of some folks’ extended families. And finally, I am grateful for Sam at Moz Hair Salon, who hides my grey, listens to me reminisce about awesome ’80s bands and indulges my illusion that I am still hip and fabulous. Heather Treleaven

Make your way along the waterway, keeping an eye out for ducks, herons, and eagles. After paddling for about 30 minutes, you'll reach a fork in the creek. Stay to your left and continue paddling and keep an eye out for owls and hummingbirds. Depending on the time of year, you may have to get out of the canoe and pull it through sections as the creek can become quite shallow. Eventually, you will arrive at the campsite. Pitt Lake is the only tidal lake in western

Canada, so make sure to pull the canoe up onto shore far enough if it's low tide. The trail portion begins to the right of the campsite. Follow the service road along for five minutes, watching for a sign on the right side of the trail that says 'Widgeon Falls'. At this point, you can either continue along the service road, which will take you to the falls, or take the trail, which ends up following along the shores of Widgeon Creek.

• Golden Ears Provincial Park: It’s not just one of the largest parks in the province, it also boasts one of the most diverse bird populations. hat I like most about M a p l e Ridge and Pitt Meadows is the diversity and people who truly care, who create a sense of community. I also love the locality to Golden Ears park, rivers, lakes and the dikes. I love Maple Ridge for its cultural venues like the ACT, the bandstand, its variety of great theatres in our high schools. I love the many community events, including one of the largest Remembrance Day celebrations in the Lower Mainland, as well as Caribbean Festival, Haney Farmers Market, summer markets, free lunch concerts. We even have our own Maple Ridge Concert Band. Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows together have a big heart and are great communities to call home. Here we have raised numerous successful athletes, including Larry Walker Jr., Brendan Morrison, Greg Moore, Cam Neely, Karina LeBlanc, just to name few. Urban style meets rural charm in downtown Maple Ridge. With some 700 retail businesses downtown, green space, historical sites, fantastic variety of festivals, these

hey say time flies by when you’re having fun, and if being the Member of Parliament for Pitt Meadows – Maple Ridge has taught me anything, it is that there are no truer words. Yes, some days have been a little bumpier than others, but having the ability to engage with the unique individuals of our community makes the hard stuff not so difficult. I never thought I would find something I loved more than coffee and books... maybe even Star Wars. Some of the themes of this past year have been helping youth, seniors, businesses and the environment, bringing together discussion, through well-attended townhalls and roundtables. From this, we created the Constituency Youth Council — a place where young adults can come to discuss barriers and possibilities, which worked on creating a townhall on youth mental health. Local businesses and non- profits were able to hire on more youth this year, through the Canada Summers Job program, which received $100,000 more in funding than last

year, employing 131 students. Additionally, our office worked hard to secure $2.9 million in funding for a three year program in the Pathfinder Youth Centre Society, giving local youth at risk a place to go in order to learn technical employment skills. So far, the biggest townhall turnout has been about our seniors. All ages came, to discuss how to ensure the future for our fastest growing demographic. Full of valuable information, I have lots to bring back for my committees study into a National Seniors’ Strategy. Furthermore, I made it out to great community events, like the farmers market, where I not only met the faces behind so many of our farms, but discovered the existence of a curious vegetable known as a lemon cucumber! At The ACT Art Gallery’s opening of their Modern Legends Exhibition, I saw breathtaking work created by talented Indigenous artists. Now, with caucus back in session, I will take everything I have learned over my travels to debate and discuss with my colleagues in Parliament. She has been part of many exhibitions over the years, including at the Yaletown Art Gallery, New Creations Gallery in Maple Ridge, On the Rise Collective, the Locus Restaurant, Paint for Peace at Pacific Palisades Hotel in Vancouver and You and Me at the Hunter Bisset Gallery in Vancouver. • Jackie Versfelt is acrylic painter who paints scenics, streetscapes and nature. She recently received an active status in the Federation of Canadian Artists and her work can be found at Expressions Art Gallery in ValleyFair Mall. • Jason Craft has been a professional artist for 14 years, a passion he discovered in Grade 5 after his parents took him to see the movie Star Wars and he couldn’t stop drawing the characters.

Now the local artist specializes in murals and his work can be seen in and on schools across the Lower Mainland. He recently painted his 86th mural on the outside wall of Fairview elementary. “In every mural I do I try to incorporate the idea of family and community. So, usually the main theme is an adult animal, which is a protective role, that type of image and then the younger animals,” said Craft of the Fairview mural that depicts a falcon looking over her young in a nest.

• Malcolm Knapp Research Forest: Visitors hear "UBC Research Forest" and they immediately think the lush green campus for Vancouver's world-class university. But Maple Ridge is home to a university-run woodland known as the Malcolm Knapp Research Forest. For visitors, it is a natural playground that benefits from the stewardship of the university. There are four colour-coded loop trails in the forest. They all begin at the research forest gate and parking lot and loop back there. There is an easily deciphered map at the gate, which shows all of the trails in their corresponding colour. The red trail is listed as a 1.4 km, 45-minute hike, but it can be completed in much quicker time than that leisurely pace. It is a wide, groomed trail with a soft wood chip base that is ideal for running on. At the other end of the spectrum is the Blue trail which is a 6.5 km trek through the wilderness that takes a good five hours, and works up a sweat. It crosses streams, varies between well groomed paths, narrow trails and rocky roads.

Favourite horse trails • The Maple Ridge Equi-Sports Centre offers riders of all disciplines and levels a chance to work on their craft. From competitive hunter jumper and dressage riding, to pleasure riding and horsemanship, the centre also offers school horses that give those who do not have their own horse a chance to ride. • The horse trails that meander along the Fraser and Pitt River dikes is a fantastic place for taking for trail rides while taking in the breathtaking scenic views of the Golden Ears mountains and abundant wildlife as you cruise along the shoreline of the Alouette and Pitt River. • The equestrian trail in the Thornhill area, or the The Bear Ridge trail, goes east starting from the area of 104th Avenue and 248th Street in one of Maple Ridge's newer suburbs. That trail will continue as far as 256th Street. From there, another trail, George's Way, continues to 264th Street and Thornhill trai,l which then runs north. A great ride with friends and family.

t has been 29 years since I first made the drive out to Maple Ridge from Vancouver. During that first long commute, I wondered if I was ever going to arrive. That day, the old Pitt River Bridge was turned and I was late for my interview at Pitt Meadows secondary. Fast forward to 2017, the new Pitt River Bridge has six lanes and I have three kids who have graduated from high school. Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows have been an amazing place for my wife and I to raise our family and participate in many aspects of this wonderful community. We have all heard that it takes a whole village to raise a child; I strongly believe that our kids have been raised by friends, coaches, teachers and myriad other people in this great community. Personally, I have had the opportunity to experience our great school district both as a parent and an educator. I have also been privileged to experience medicine through the eyes of a doctor (my wife Marla) and a patient (recent broken leg). Our community is blessed with many dedicated people in these two critical professions.

We now love to ride all over the community and beyond, with one of my favourite rides being up past Allco Park, along a dirt road that parallels the river, all the way up to the south side of the dam at Alouette Lake. I think all of this is what is so special about Maple Ridge. We have a vibrant community with all that you need, but in a minute’s notice, you can be off in the bush experiencing the wonderful solitude of nature. Whether it is viewing the ‘Ears’ with the sun lighting them up, or watching the river with Mount Baker as a backdrop, the scenery can make one breathless. Few places in the world offer the array of experiences that many of us in Maple Ridge take for granted. Who would have thought 29 years would go so fast and be so full. When you overlay the beauty with the incredibly caring group of people that we have grown to know and love here, we couldn’t have asked for anything more. The location has also created our family’s A-List activities over the years: these have included tubing at the hot rocks; hiking at Gold Creek and UBC Research Forest; biking along the dikes; and end-

Not only is it a great place to catch fish, but visitors may also camp, hike, swim, and enjoy various other water sports. • The lake holds a large amount of kokanee, rainbow and bull trout, dolly varden, and even some unconfirmed lake trout. Bull trout and dolly varden may be fished year round, while kokanee is only available spring through fall. If opting to fly-fish, Parsi recommends hiking along the shoreline until you find a creek mouth. • Rolley Lake is stocked with catchable size Rainbow Trout and is managed as a catch and keep lake. Besides Rainbows, there are a few species of sportfish found in this lake, including cutthroat trout, dolly varden, kokanee, and brown bullhead. For gear fisherman, basic bait fishing works good so it’s a good lake to teach the kids on especially since its so close to the city. For fly-fishing, wolly buggers work

• Ridge Meadows Hospice Oktoberfest: It’s a time to eat and drink and have a good time in order to help people going through tough times. The Ridge Meadows Hospice Society hosts its annual Oktoberfest at Pitt Meadows Heritage Hall, this Oct. 20. There will be yodelling and stein-holding competitions and German food and music, to help the hospice society help others. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are in advance. There will be dancing and music. • Vistas Run: It’s billed as one of the more picturesque races in the Lower Mainland, as runners and walkers trade running on the asphalt for running through the beautiful and panoramic views in Kanaka Creek Regional Park. The event, now in its 20th year, includes a number of events to appeal to anyone who wants to come out and support the Ridge Meadows Hospice

It includes a beautiful 10- and five-kilometre routes through Kanaka Creek Regional Park and a four-kilometre family fun walk. • Ridge Meadows Hospice Foundation Gala: It’s called Enchanted, and it’s the name of the 29th annual fundraising evening on Saturday, Oct. 14, at Meadow Gardens Golf Club. The Gala is the foundation’s glamorous evening of fundraising, with proceeds being used to buy life-saving equipment for Ridge Meadows Hospital and healthcare in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. • Rotary Ladies Night: Sex and the Suburbs is the attention-getting title of this year’s Rotary Club of Haney’s annual Ladies Night. It took place in September at Swan-e-set Resort and Country Club and included improv and a gourmet dinner, all in aid of Rotary projects such as the lunch bag program.

• The Albion Sports Complex is home to a number of outdoor sporting enthusiasts, bringing Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge players, coaches and family together. Fields include football, soccer, baseball and softball. Plus, there’s an outdoor concession, parking for 250, and easy access from the Lougheed Highway. Located conveniently beside Planet Ice, Golden Ears Winter Club and Albion Fairgrounds, the field hosts four softball diamonds, two of which can be used at night, as well as two baseball diamonds - with one being lit. The wheelchair accessible park also hosts a spray park for kids to cool off in the summer. • Planet Ice is home to the Ridge Meadow Flames of the Pacific Junior Hockey, playing on the Cam Neely Arena sheet with 1,200 seats. Built in 1989 the twin-pad arena features two NHL regulation sized

rinks. Figure skating and ringette are also popular tenants. In the summer, Planet Ice is home to Ridge Meadows Minor Ball Hockey Association. Planet Ice also features The Break Away Bar and Grill, featuring 18 TVs to watch your favourite game or get a snack between games during tournaments. • Telosky Stadium may not be the newest, but it is one with a rich history. The ball field dates back to 1950, when local farmer and for pro player Pete Telosky turned seven acres of prime land into a baseball diamond. Now home to some of the region’s top baseball and softball talent, the diamond is part of the sports fields located next to Thomas Haney Secondary School. Former Major League all-star and MVP Larry Walker jr. graced the field, as well as a number of Ridge Meadow Pride and Rage players who have gone on to earn U.S. scholarships.

our favourite emergency health professionals are Steve Franklin and Shaun Collard of the Maple Ridge fire department, Lorie Muller, a local paramedic with the BC Ambulance Service. Franklin received a 20-year pin from the department in 2016 and was one of the first eight, and youngest of those, full-time firefighters hired by the department. Muller and her husband Eric started Athletes in Kind, which raises tens of thousands of

dollars a year for the B.C. Childhood Cancer Parents Association. The money goes to those whose kids are being treated at B.C. Children’s Hospital. Events AiK sponsors include the Pitt Meadows Canada Day Kids Charity Run and OKtoberFAST. Collard works as a Maple Ridge firefighter since 2009 and for a private company that specializes in technical rescues.

Favourite parks The Kinsmen spray park is open to the public on a weather permitting, seasonal basis. • Kanaka Creek Regional Park: Coastal rainforest, waterfalls and sandstone cliffs are a big draw in this regional park. Watching salmon is a popular activity – whether at the fish-fence or the hatchery. Kanaka Creek provides habitat for a variety of wildlife, and trails for a variety of experiences. There are more than 10 kilometers of trails, five km of horse trails, and seven for biking. Plus, bring your dog - on leash of course!

• Memorial Peace Park is the place to relax and enjoy the outdoors, no matter what the season and watch people go about their busy lives. Concerts, rallies, or workers out for a lunchtime break makes it easy to people watch. • Outdoor patio at Chameleon: There are front-row seats at the cafe to watch people go by on 224th Street. he horse clock, in front of the Maple Ridge Leisure Centre, and the street banners made by students on display in the downtown core are the favourite pieces of public art. • The Beast, the landmark horse clock that has looked over Dewdney Trunk Road in downtown Maple Ridge since 1989, is your favourite piece of public art work. Don Brayford, a former municipal manager of electro-mechanical operations, originally designed and built the aluminum horse for close to $60,000, but left no wiring diagrams behind. It was constructed from recycled materials with a Commodore 64' operating system, and originally featured a clock that chimed on the hour accompanied with the rearing of The Beast. Brayford envisioned that horse clock would represent local natural beauty and wrote a story called “The Legend of the Beast.” The Beast fell motionless in 2004 – after the computer which controlled it crashed for good. The district then hired Ray Saunders, who built Gastown's famous steam clock, to fix it, costing the District of Maple Ridge about $45,000. While the clock and its operating system has been modernized, The Beast no longer rears up. • Tendance is the sculpture in front of the

S Leisure Centre in Memorial Peace Park by artists Michael Vandermeer and Cheryl Hamilton. It features large maple seeds cast in bronze which are strung along swirling stainless steel "curves" representing their spiral paths from tree to earth. Arising from a concrete base to a height of 20 feet, and illuminated by lighting integrated into the pedestal, the sculpture is clearly visible day and night from all points around the Memorial Peace Park. It was part of a Metro Vancouver “Necklace Project” in 2010. • The street banners went up around the downtown core in Maple Ridge in time for Canada Day celebrations this year. There were six new designs created by local students on display with the theme of Canada 150: Exploring our Nature.Two of the designs were Katzie and Kwantlen

Findlay is with Findlay-Gunnell-Sandor, while Watkins is with MHW Law (McEachern Harris and Watkins). Robinson does estate and tax planning for Centra. Findlay is a “champion” of the Maple Ridge Community Foundation. Watkins was B.A. (Hons.), LL.B., called to the British Columbia Bar in 1986. His preferred areas of practice include family law and civil and estate litigation. historical pictographs that featured a special artifact called the Skytte Bowl which has been renamed as Qelemteleq. The Qelemteleq was found in the mid-part of the last century near Webster’s Corners in Maple Ridge by a homesteader who was digging a foundation for his house. The student designs were shortlisted by the schools and a selection committee including representatives from the City and School District 42 who picked the winners.

Favourite community booster

rnie Daykin was voted favourite communit y booster, which should come as no surprise. The former mayor of Maple Ridge is seemingly at every community event, from Canada Day to the Haney Farmers Market, and does tireless work as a director for the Maple Ridge Community Foundation. Ernie is proud to claim being a ‘Ridge kid.’ “My family roots go back to the 1870s,” he writes on the foundation website, “my grandmother was a Hampton, one of Maple Ridge’s pioneer families. I attended school in Maple Ridge – a proud Maple Ridge secondary alumni – Go, Ramblers.” He and his wife Judy raised their family here and now have grandchildren in Maple Ridge. The couple operated Windsor Plywood in Maple Ridge for 24 years. He now works for the Baptist Housing Society, serving as an administrator for Maple Towers. Ernie, as he is affectionately known, is also a committed volunteer, having served on a number of not-for-profit groups over the years. He served on Maple Ridge council for 12 years, six as mayor.

Ernie is also past president of the local chamber of commerce and the Building Supply Dealers of B.C. He was also a board member of Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Community Services, Ridge Meadows Hospice Society, Monarch Place Transition House, Building Supply Dealer Association of B.C., and treasurer of Burnett Fellowship church. He dedicates much time now to his work with the community foundation, which manages a permanent endowment in order to respond to emerging and changing community needs. Margaret Kury was another favourite community booster, as was Cheryl Zandbergen, the latter with Kids in the Ridge. Zandbergen is a local mother who started a website to describe and review playgrounds, natural spaces, indoor play places, attractions and businesses in the community. Kury passed away in August. She was a dedicated member of the local chapter of the Royal Canadian Legion, serving as its president, and a director for the Maple Ridge Community Foundation. Kury was a former Maple Ridge citizen of the year, and most known as Remembrance Day master of ceremonies. She was a retired Canadian Forces veteran and an active member of the legion since 1976. She served on every legion committee and held executive positions, including

three terms as Branch 88 president. For more than 20 years, she volunteered to speak to school children on the importance of Remembrance Day. She served as treasurer of the local Air Cadet Squadron and was a charter member of the Ridge-Meadows Ex-service Women’s Club and a member of the local St. John Ambulance Branch. Ms. Kury served on a committee to revitalize the town centre and Memorial Peace Park, where the cenotaph is located. She also served on the Capital Campaign Committee for the expansion of Ridge Meadows Hospital. She was involved as a volunteer with Canadian Blood Services for more than 30 years and was also involved with fundraising for community services, including the Canadian Blood Services, heart and stroke foundation, the Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation and hospice society, and the breast and prostate cancer foundations. Kury was awarded the Legion’s Life Membership and the Meritorious Service Medal for outstanding service to the Royal Canadian Legion. In 2012, she was one of 17 Maple Ridge residents bestowed with a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, presented by then MP Randy Kamp to people who’ve helped build the area.

In 2010, she received a Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation, awarded annually to individuals who have contributed in an exemplary manner to the care and well-being of veterans or to the remembrance of the contributions, sacrifices and achievements of those. In 2008, the Maple Ridge Community Foundation selected her as its citizen of the year. We are honored to recognize Margaret Kury in memoriam for her family. Her contributions to our communities far surpasses what is mentioned here.

All of the members are volunteers who perform, produce, direct, build, staple, duct tape and sew for the love of live theatre. The Mandate of the Emerald Pig Theatrical Society is to foster and encourage amateur theatre in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, to produce and perform theatre of all kinds, to foster and encourage theatre as a recreational, educational,

and creative activity open to everyone in the community, to foster and encourage participation in theatre of persons of all ages and levels of experience, to foster and encourage artistic and practical development of members through exposure to workshops, mentoring and productions and to contribute toward the growth and development of the arts community. • SPECC-tacular Productions Theatre Group was formed as a not-for-profit company in 2009 by Su Wolfe, Pauline de Silva, Edwin Marshall, Christine Olorenshaw and Chris Wolfe. It is a musical theatre company that specializes in pantomime and musical revues within Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows areas. The group was formed to ensure

their love of musical theatre would continue in the community. Together they represent many years of outstanding experience and professional talent musically, visually and through their collective and creative style. The group started performing in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows in 2009 with the Christmas Pantomime Cinderella. Every year since, they have produced a pantomime to bring family entertainment to the community. The pantomimes have become a household name and families flock to see them every Christmas. • Xtreme Theatre was created in 2000 by Wendy Holm, and originally called Home’s Cool Theatre. It is primarily run by volunteers who help with set building, props,

costumes, advertising and programs and most backstage jobs during showtime. Xtreme Theatre is a group where home schooled children are able to be part of a musical theatre production. Although children from all faith backgrounds are welcome to be a part of this group, it should be noted that this group is run by Christian teachers. Wendy Holm has been the producer and coordinator since the beginning, starting with 18 children. Current enrollment is over 130 children between the ages of 5 and 17. The group was created to provide an opportunity for all home schooled children to experience musical theatre and to help them meet their educational goals.
