“I worked with hair stylists and makeup people and went to peoples houses to shoot. It was all a formula. We used lighting and screens to create soft light to make the client look their best.” Victoria was the next port of call, where he practiced industrial photography in the robotics industry. Then came Kamloops. “I loved it. It is cowboy country, and Germans are fanatical about cowboys. I love the whole mystique about cowboys, alone against this immense landscape.” Since arriving in the Cowichan Valley more than two years ago, Datené has taken up stock photography full-time, allowing him the freedom of working out of his own home, situated nicely in The Properties overlooking Quamichan Lake. “I work at my craft every day and am loving it. Photography is an art form and not much different than painting or music. I love to create beautiful and interesting things that I enjoy and that can also be enjoyed by others.” He describes stock photography as a very competitive field. “I have been doing stock for about 10 years. You can’t be a slouch. You have to crank them (the photographs) out! That’s what I learned about stock.” He explains the process behind his wellthought-out stock images. “I come up with the idea, then I make a drawing. From the drawing I either set up the shot in the studio or I go get pieces — images from other places that I can put together to create the idea. It’s a long process.
