A local group of women who think there has to be a way to a better world are taking their cause public on Saturday. Resonate Kootenay, a regional offshoot of BraveHeart Women, will be participating in a quest to set a world record for the largest hug exchange at the Creston Valley Fall Fair at 10 a.m. “Hugs for Harmony” is a way to bring awareness to the power of oxytocin, said to be the love and harmony hormone,” said local organizer Debby Johnson. Following the hug event, members and supporters are asked to join in a dance-walk, a fun and inspiring way of moving around any community. “We will be heading downtown, following a chalked route, and then returning to the community complex,” Johnson said. The dance-walk was created as a fundraiser to help send Kendra Lee, a local massage therapist and BraveHeart Women facilitator, to a peace event in Jerusalem.

After nearly three decades, the Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) banquet is a fall tradition, and tickets are now on sale for the 28th, which will be held Oct. 13 at the Creston and District Community Complex. The popular fundraiser hosted by the Creston chapter will follow the same format as previous banquets — cocktail hour with hors d’oeuvres, then dinner followed by live and silent auctions — but the impact is even more visible, now that DUC is slated to take control of the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area (CVWMA). “Under the new agreement between the B.C. Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations and Ducks Unlimited Canada, the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Act is slated to be rescinded and management of our wildlife area will be restructured,” said Creston DUC spokesperson Lou Knafla. “The creation of the new management structure for the wildlife area will also involve input from our community.” See DUC, page 3

From page 1 The change may not happen until after next year’s provincial election, but in the meantime, DUC will be investing $600,000 on major upgrades to existing water control structures and upgrading the dikes starting this month. The aspects that require upgrades will be highlighted at the banquet in a 15-minute slide presentation by CVWMA biologist MarcAndré Beaucher. “A lot of the equipment is so old,” said Knafla. “They do little fixes here and there. Some major channels need to be redredged, and some pumphouses need to be rebuilt.” And even though the CVWMA is a Ramsardesignated wetland of international importance, “it hasn’t had the quality of other Ramsar sites,” said Knafla. “As it progresses, we’ll have something to really show off.” Those projects will be helped out by the funds raised at the banquet, which has an extra event added last year, a high-flyer challenge. This year, there will be 13 auctions on 13 two-piece premier luggage sets. Each winner will then be eliminated until one is left, and chooses a trip to one of five locales, including New York/ Broadway, Cape Canaveral and Napa Valley. For those not actually taking part, “it’s as much fun to watch,” Knafla said. Beyond that, there is the tasty buffet with three meats, salads and desserts whipped up by caterer Carol Huscroft, that follows the cocktail hour that allows up to 236 guests to socialize — one of the most anticipated parts of the evening. “There’s a lot of chatter that goes on in that hour,” said Knafla. Tickets for the banquet are $40, available at Mawson’s Sports or from committee chair Gertie Brown. An early bird draw will be held Sept. 15, and the winner will receive a print of a red fox coming out of its lair by Denis Mayer.

If you’re sensing a theme, you’re correct, and if you want a sample, you must be aboard when the train leaves the Cherrybrook Farms station on Sept. 15 at 1400 hours (2 p.m., of course). “I love tea and Gord loves trains,” said Caroline Martin, who owns the Erickson orchard/candy shop with her husband, Gordon. “So we put the two together.” Debbie Graham, who has hosted the annual Pink Garden Tea since 2010, fundraising and promoting awareness of breast

cancer, will join Martin, offering a special blend by New York’s Harney and Sons, containing “Earl Grey tea, plus black teas, lemony bergamot and grapefruit essences,” according to the company’s website. “We’re going to be serving DiamondJubilee,whichistheQueen’s favourite tea,” Graham said. The train-themed high tea is planned to be the first in a series. “This is the start of a journey,” said Martin. “This is the initial train station, then we make stops around the world.” Future teas will eventually transport guests to Holland, Japan, France and Poland to celebrate those countries’ tea traditions.

Latin music concert to raise funds for Honduran children BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor

The Prince Charles Theatre will be filled with the sound of Latin America when the Creston Rotary Club presents Singing for Honduras. The followup to last year’s concert will run at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 14, raising funds to buy educational supplies for Honduran children. “These children are from rural settings,” said Singing for Honduras director Marlene Nash. “They have very limited access to education. A lot are working in fields and are from very poor families.” The lineup for the concert is extensive, with performances by John Herbaut, the Creston Community Band, the Velle Weitman Trio, and the trio of Tiesja, Larry and Dixie, along with Zavallennahh Huscroft, Monte Anderson, Peter Bodley, Eddie Owl and Latin dancer Melissa Calderon. (Anyone interested in participating in the Latin dance portion can call Calderon at 250428-3493.) Nash, who once owned a popular ice cream shop on 11th Avenue North, will also sing, having returned to Creston this summer after a six-year absence. Rash of thefts hits Creston residents BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

Creston residents were hit by a rash of breakins to vehicles and homes on the weekend, with cash appearing to be the key interest of the culprits. “In a number of the incidents, items were stolen and then left nearby,” RCMP Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan said on Tuesday. “The thieves seemed to just be after cash.” Police have no suspects to this point. In other police news, RCMP members responded to 106 calls for service from August 27-September 2, Gollan said. August 27 •A requested well-being check on a Kitchener Road resident revealed there were no problems. •A minor collision occurred on the Kootenay Lake ferry. •A 20th Street resident complained of an ongoing littering problem by drivers on CanyonLister Road. •The owner of a vehicle in which a dog was reportedly locked on Northwest Boulevard has been notified about the complaint. •A mountain bike was found and turned in to the police station, where it can be claimed by the owner. •No injuries were reported after a vehicle collided with a deer on Highway 3A.

Police nab impaired

Thunder Cats hire new head coach BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor

Josh Hepditch is the new head coach and general manger of the Creston Valley Thunder Cats, and the recent arrival couldn’t be happier with his new home. “I’m blown away. It’s an extremely friendly, supportive town from what I’ve seen so far,” he said, adding that he and his wife, Kathryn, were invited to spend their first night in town at her employers’ home, even though the Creston PhysioWorks and More owners hadn’t met the couple. The 27-year-old New Brunswick native recently arrived in Creston, although he’s been researching and recruiting since the team hired him in mid-June, even helping out at a Merritt training camp with 2007-2011 Thunder Cats coach Joe Martin. He started playing hockey as a child, following in his older brother’s footsteps. “I just did the same thing every other kid did,” he said. “As the years went on, the dream got bigger, and I tried to take it as far as it would go.” Hepditch played minor hockey in Fredericton, N.B., until he was 17, when he joined the Moncton Wildcats in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. After that, he spent five years on the University of New Brunswick team before joining the Central Hockey League’s Allen Americans in Texas. Through it all, he proved himself to be versatile, playing both forward and defence. “That was something that helped me get through my career,” he said.

coaches on the Moncton and UNB teams — the UNB coaches led the team to the finals four times during Hepditch’s time on it, and

Moncton coaches Ted Nolan, Danny Flynn and Daniel Lacroix went on to coach the New York Islanders. The first test of Hepditch’s skills came on the weekend, when the Thunder Cats training camp was held at the John Bucyk Arena from Aug. 30-Sept. 2, with about 30 hopefuls slated to attend. That was to be followed by an exhibition game against the Glacier Nationals — a Montana team in the Northern Pacific Hockey League holding its training camp in Fernie — on Sept. 4 in Creston, and away exhibition games against the Kimberley Dynamiters (Sept. 7), the Columbia Valley Rockies (Sept. 8) and the Fernie Ghostriders (Sept. 9). The Thunder Cats will host the Beaver Valley Nitehawks for an exhibition game on Sept. 11. Having just finished playing hockey, Hepditch is sure his unique point of view will be an asset to the local Kootenay International Junior Hockey League team. “I’m just out of the game, so I see a lot of it from a player’s perspective,” he said. “A lot of players don’t agree with what the coach is doing, and now that I’m in the coach’s seat, I can see why.”

Iâ€™m a lucky guy. Part of my job involves getting out and about and talking to a huge range of interesting people who are more often than not doing interesting things. But few of those experiences have left a stronger mark on me than an afternoon I spent recently while I was working on a Meet Your Maker story about young farmers Joel and Jen Comer. Joel was kind enough to take time out to drive me out to a couple of Lister sites where some of their hives (which they own in partnership with his parents) are situated. Wanting to get some good photos, I pushed my queasiness as far down as I could, donned a white jumpsuit with attached screen mask, jammed my bare hands deep into my pockets and accompanied Joel as he approached a group of wood boxes, each of which is home to tens of thousands of bees. Now, itâ€™s hardly a secret that bees are fascinating creatures. And it didnâ€™t surprise me at all when, a week earlier, Jen told me that she and her husband had â€œfallen in loveâ€? with them. Iâ€™ve known Lew Truscott, who has spent more than half of his long life raising bees and reaping honey, for a long time and his enthusiasm is contagious. Over the years Iâ€™ve come to admire farmers for the multitude of skills they need to survive. Now, I am coming to understand that beekeeping is a specialty of an entirely different magnitude, and itâ€™s hard to overestimate their importance to our planet. Since my photo session with Joel Iâ€™ve read a couple of books on the subject, watched a documentary film and even re-watched Uleeâ€™s Gold, a

Is it just me or am I getting more miserable as I get older? I was wondering that the other day as we embarked on the journey of researching a replacement vehicle for the current one where the engine decided it was time to shuffle off this mortal coil. Having spent time in a previous life as a purchaser, I tend to over-research everything we buy until we are absolutely certain we have obtained the best value. Turns out the majority of people in our age demographic are quite similar â€” most of us had grown up in an era where you didnâ€™t have everything you wanted, work hard for your present paycheque and want the best value you can find. Some of us even post-purchase shop to get that glow of gratification in knowing we got a really sweet deal on that thingamabob we bought. Gleaners happy to help pickers

To the Editor: (Re: “Pickers are among the finest people”, Aug. 23 Advance, page 7) Thank you, Susan, for your letter to the editor with a gentle reminder to all of us — that we should not judge a book by its cover or a person by what they wear. Many of us do not have the opportunity to meet or get to know the fruit pickers who come to work in our valley because they are here for such a short time. If we did have that privilege, I believe that we would think differently. These are young people who have come west to experience Western Canada and are away from their home province for most of the summer. Like any other young adults, they love to talk, ask questions, share their stories and are most grateful for anything special — like home baked muffins or fresh vegetables from the garden. Picking fruit is not an easy job and it takes committed, hard-working individuals to stick it out. Work starts early in the morning, some days are pretty hot by noon and some mornings can be very chilly, requiring toques and gloves. So while most of the population of Creston are still slumbering these young people are working hard to contribute to the main industry of our val-

ley, agriculture. Where would we be without the fruit pickers? While I am saddened to learn that we as volunteers at the Gleaners make some rash and unnecessary comments, I would also like to say that we make a special effort to assist the fruit pickers by collecting and storing things that we have learned over the years that they may need. A simple request for warm sweaters, mitts and toques would be a mammoth task when you think there may be more than 500 boxes to check. So now we gather these items in preparation for that request. We have learned to store bikes, backpacks, small packages of soaps, shampoo, small kitchen items and many other things for them. The pickers are very grateful for all the hospitality and even though some have need of the food bank when they first arrive, they have also been known to give a donation to the food bank when they leave. Personally, I look forward each year to when the pickers return. They are a happy lot, full of life and energy. Jean Syroteuk Erickson

Chamber keeps events coming following busy summer

It has been a hectic summer for everyone at the Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Centre. We have just said goodbye to our two student councillors, Jayme and Caitlyn. They were a great help during a busy summer tourist season. Best of luck to them in their studies! There were some interesting occurrences this summer. We actually had more visitors this year than the same period last summer, bucking the trend in many parts of B.C. Curiously, the rainy month of June saw us double our Visitor Centre numbers. We have also seen an unusually high number of tourists from far reaching parts of the United States — Michigan, Tennessee, Arkansas, Vermont, Massachusetts, Florida and Texas. Part of the credit for that must go to the International Selkirk Loop. Those folks are doing a terrific job promoting the entire area and especially the top 10 scenic drives in North America. A great addition this year was the summer art show put on by Artistic Visions as our entry in Artwalk. The amount of talent on display was amaz-

ing. The show was a welcome extra reason to stay in the Visitor Centre a while longer, which gives more time to learn about other local attractions. Of course, giving tourists reasons to

We are busy planning an event in the middle of the week, including organizing a sequel to “Common Ground”, which took place in 2010. Not too far after that is the Santa Claus Parade and Christmas celebration. We are constantly gathering info and looking for improvements for our annual visitors’ guide (published for us by the Creston Valley Advance). Plus, we have work on the annual spring Home and Garden Show. Meanwhile, we are kicking off a membership drive for the chamber of commerce. We are a membership-based organization and cannot do the work we do without your help. We are always working to improve on the way we do things and the things we do. We want to start by asking a simple question, “What do you want us to do?” We welcome your thoughts, ideas and suggestions. Call me at the chamber of commerce and we can talk. Sculptor brings performance art to Ramada

Paul Dawkins didn’t start with a plan to spend much of his adult life making sculptures in sand. “I like to tell people that the very beginning was when I was three years old, in a crib, reaching out between the bars for sand to mix,” he laughs.

The truth, though, is that he was an animation school student in San Diego, hanging out on a beach in San Blas, Mexico, north of Puerto Vallarta, and he “was bored silly.” Let’s get on the beach and build something, he thought. Soon he was constructing a 20-foot dragon with coconuts for eyes. “And I drew a wall of people, many of whom were asking questions.” He liked the attention — “It’s performance art, really” — and soon he was learning more about sand as a medium. He started, like kids playing on the beach, using only his hands to pile up the sand, wet it and start making shapes. It was in California in 1977 that Dawkins saw carvers packing sand into wood boxes. “I was amazed at what they were doing,” he recalls. For the last few weeks Dawkins has been working on a sand carving at the corner of highways 3 and 3A, a prime traffic spot provided by the Ramada Hotel and Conference Centre. doing a sand sculpture — that looks like a wood sculpture.” The “wood sculpture” was a weird stack of different sized plywood frames in which Dawkins was preparing sand to carve. Layers of sand are watered and tamped within each box as he gradually builds up a sculpting base that becomes more like sandstone than sand. A finished sculpture can be sprayed with a white glue and water mix that can help it last for months, he says. Dawkins turned that early experience in San Blas into a career, becoming the world’s (as far as he knows) first full-time professional sand sculptor. Over the next four decades, he would go on to travel to 92 countries, often winning sand sculpting competitions and teaching the craft wherever he could. “I got the idea to go to shopping malls and fairs, any pubic venue that has a lot of people.” He patterned his career after musicians, who tour from city to city, performing. “In the early days I would travel and stay in hostels,” he says. “In competitions, I would work alone, competing against teams of up to ten people. … “I’m a really fast shoveler,” he laughs. “I always started out with the biggest pile of sand!” The last 39 years haven’t been all sand, travel and bikinis for Dawkins, though. He’s also

He came to Creston in part to escape the experience of 10 years in Toronto, where he built up a company of 20 employees, creating special effects, props and TV character costumes. “It really got too big for me. I felt like I was losing my edge as an artist, so now I’ve gone back to the roots of where I started.” He talks of trying to settle down, but admits the lure of travel is a strong one. “The best education is travelling, I think. It is very mindopening.” Dawkins believes art is an important component in economic development and has seen his performance art grow into a major attraction that draws tourists and motivates other artists to get involved. As he works on what he describes as “my most detailed project yet” on the Ramada Hotel lot (with plans to add to his list of world records), Dawkins gets the chance to interact with visitors and encourage locals to pick up a carving tool and get involved. Sculpting gives him time to think, too. Travels in Third World, developing countries, have inspired him to work on ways to create low-cost, small-scale housing, using his artistic talents to make tiny homes attractive, as well as functional. But that, he says, is a story for another day. helped to pioneer snow-sculpting competitions and done ice carvings, too. He credits his experience as a stop-action film animator and artistic background for the attention his carvings bring him. His creations are always designed to tell a story and give the appearance of movement. Sand sculpting also brings out the competitor in him. In the early 1980s, he was part of a team of Californians that won a couple of team world championships and consistently finished in the medals in competitions. They eventually decided to become an all-California team and cut him loose. “So later on I started another team and we beat them,” he laughs. Canadians and Americans have traditionally been at the forefront of the sand sculpting competitive world, but European and, now, Chinese competitors have risen to the challenge. Dawkins cites one of his most memorable experiences — of the 92 countries he has competed in 16 of them — as a 10-day competition in China that drew 10 million viewers over the course of the event. “The Super Bowl wouldn’t compare as an event. It was a sea of people for the entire time.” Dawkins didn’t abandon his early interest in film animation.
