Facing off for a good cause

The sounds of laughter and hockey sticks filled the Brighouse Lacrosse Box last Wednesday as kids ran around playing in a ball hockey tournament for Richmond Addiction Services’ second annual
Hockey Day in Richmond. The tournament was put on with the purpose of raising awareness for Richmond Addiction Services and “getting kids involved,” said Richard Dubras, the executive director of Richmond Addiction Services. There were five teams of kids 8 to 16 years old who came out to play. Food was sold by M&M Meats and there was music playing throughout the day. The RCMP and a group of fire fighters came out to watch and play around with the kids for a bit. Richmond Addiction Services does a lot of work with schools
throughout the year so they wanted to hold a summer event to help raise awareness. They want to make sure that kids know where they can go for help if they need it. “It’s all about creating a relationship with the community,” Dubras said. A hockey tournament was the event of choice given that the costs to set up were minimal and because “we know that there’s young hockey players who struggle with drugs and alcohol,” Dubras said.
