River stable, but higher waters expected Black Press
Residents of Glen Valley have been allowed to return to their homes as Fraser River water levels have stabilized. However, it could be a short stay. Late Sunday night, city officials rescinded the flood evacuation order to all but two residents in the area. The evacuation alert remains.
“We should have a few days of relative calm before the next pulse is expected,” said Abbotsford Deputy Fire Chief Mike Helmer. He said residents in the area were “happy to go back” even if it may only be for a few days. The two homes still under the evacuation order are located at the far east and far west of River Road
where the flood risk is still high. The portion of River Road east of Bradner Road is open to local traffic only. The rest of River Road is open to passenger vehicles only and is limited to one lane in some areas. Engineering staff will continue to assess the safety of River Road. SEE: Page 3
Lauren Barwick has been named to the paralympic team that will represent Canada at the 2012 Paralympic Games this summer in London, England. Barwick, 34, of Aldergrove, was winner of gold and silver medals at the 2008 Paralympic Games in Hong Kong. Barwick will be joined by two other Langley-based competitors Eleonore Elstone and Ashley Gowanlock, who also competed at the 2008 Paralympics. The fourth member of the team, Jody Schloss of Toronto, will be making her Paralympic debut in London. The 2012 Paralympic Games run August 29-September 9 in London. The Canadian Para-Equestrian team riders have had remarkable success over the past 12 months, achieving podium performances at international events in the United Kingdom, Portugal, Belgium, Germany and the United States, which has put the team in fourth place in the world heading into the games, said Equine Canada in announcing the team selection. “I feel very confident that our team is well prepared for the Games,” said National Team Coach Andrea Taylor, who will be accompanying Canada’s team for a second time to the Paralympics. “This team, from the athletes, the support personnel, to the leadership group, works tremendously well together and has a solid history of international experience. We’re ready to go for it!” Barwick, who rode Maile at the 2008 Games, will be lending Maile to Gowanlock for the 2012 Games. Barwick will also be sharing her mount Ferdonia 2 with Gowanlock, and Barwick will also be riding Off to Paris, owned by Equine Canada. Elstone will be riding Zareno and Why Not G, and Schloss will be riding her own mount, Inspector Rebus. Barwick started riding horses at the age of seven. Lauren Barwick She moved quickly through the ranks of Pony Club and began to compete in both eventing and show jumping. Barwick was so entranced with the thrill of competition and accomplishment that she dreamed of becoming a professional stunt person specializing in horsemanship. But Barwick’s life took a tragic turn in 2000, when a bale of hay from an unstable stack fell on top of her. The incident broke her back, and paralyzed her from the waist down. One year after the accident, Barwick shifted her dreams away from stunt riding, and quickly refocused on para-equestrian sport with the help of coach Sandra Verda. Since delving into para-dressage, Barwick has actively pursued international competition with outstanding success. She earned great results at the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens, but most remarkable is her gold and silver medal performances at the 2008 Paralympic Games in Hong Kong. SEE: Page 11

Flood waters from the Fraser River overran roads and farms in Glen Valley last week, prompting road closures and evacuation warnings. More water is expected this weekend.
Glen Valley braces for more flooding FROM FRONT: Rob Thomas is the owner of one of the homes still under the evacuation order. On Monday, he returned to his home for a short time, to remove belongings and move some of his furniture and appliances to a higher floor. He plans to have a motorhome towed from the area as soon as possible. He told the Abbotsford News that he was staying at a hotel for
the time being. The weekend flood watch was less severe than originally predicted. The BC River Forecast Centre was calling for levels as high as 6.75 metres at the Mission Bridge gauge. The Fraser River never passed the 6.4-metre mark. As of Monday morning, the river level was 6.22 metres. “We can only go with the predictions we’re given,” said
Helmer regarding the evacuation process. He said about 95 per cent of residents were in agreement that it’s better to be “safe than sorry” and leave the area. “We’ll take the five per cent flack,” Helmer said. While the forecast for the coming days is for stable levels, the Fraser is expected to rise again by the end of the week. Helmer said the forecast is for levels to range from 6.7 metres to
7.3 metres, which will result in another evacuation of the area. City engineering crews are monitoring the dikes every hour. The City of Abbotsford has activated an emergency operations centre and will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates. Detailed flood information is available on the city’s website at abbotsford.ca and through the Flood Information Phone Line at 604-864-5688.

Langley Township areas still on ‘evacuation alert’ Aldergrove Star
While the City of Abbotsford briefly issued an evacuation order last week for some Glen Valley residents, Township of Langley affected residents remain on evacuation alert. The Fraser River water level continues to rise, however, an evacuation order has not been necessary. Residents in the Township still have road access in and out of the area. A road closure is in effect at 264 Street between 84 and 88 Avenues, due to high water on the road. Fort Langley’s Marina Park area east of the parking lot and the boat launch are also closed. An evacuation alert issued
by the Township of Langley for the unprotected areas of Glen Valley, Northwest Langley, Brae Island, and McMillan Island is still in place. Farmers that wish to evacuate their livestock should contact Ministry of Agriculture. “We are keeping a very watchful eye on the river and the weather,” said Township director of public works Roeland Zwaag. “So far it is holding steady, although people in areas unprotected by dykes have been told they may have to leave quickly, should that situation change.” On Wednesday, June 20, 147 homes, farms, and businesses - including lumber industries, a winery, camp-

Residences and vehicles have been submerged in Glen Valley. ground, and aviation-related business - were put on evacuation alert by the Township of Langley. Those who live and work in those areas were told
to find alternate accommodations and be ready to leave their homes, should the river overflow its banks. The recent dry spell has
slowed the rising of the water. However, forecasts indicate more intense rain for the weekend, and the evacuation alert remains in effect. Langley Township staff, emergency responders, and the Langley Emergency Program continue to monitor conditions and provide updates. Engineering staff are patrolling eight kilometres of dykes, which protect the majority of Township land along the river. Because the Fraser River is moving quickly and the water is rising and collecting debris, the public is asked to stay off the dykes and the river itself. People should not cross barricades on roads or trails, even if flooding is not visible.
As well, they are asked not to approach emergency personnel or municipal staff to ask questions or seek information, as it inhibits them from doing their work. “We need residents to be cautious and aware, and make smart choices during this potentially dangerous time - for their own safety,” said Zwaag. Sal-Mart thrift store closing Aldergrove Star
The Aldergrove Salvation Army Sal-Mart thrift store will be closing the end of July but the Salvation Army intends to open a new store in Aldergrove soon. “This (closure) does not mean that the Salvation Army does not want a presence in Aldergrove,” said spokesman Major James Hagglund in a statement released Monday. “The current operation has not proved to be financially viable, nor has it served the community as well as we would like. The Sal-Mart location as well as the Sal-Mart name will cease to be connected to the Salvation Army this summer. “We are carefully moving towards a larger location and one which will serve the community better. We will be focusing on the retail component, with all profits going to assist the Salvation Army Gateway of Hope Ministries. This

Angie Quaale, who operates Well Seasoned Gourmet Foods and is the driving force behind the highly-successful Barbecue on the Bypass each September, is the new president of the Greater Langley Chamber of Commerce. She was formally sworn in last Tuesday night at the chamber’s 81st annual general meeting. She takes over from Denni Bonetti of Bonetti Meats. Quaale is wellknown as the author of a regular Langley Times column, and also appears regularly on Global TV. She is also a founding board member of the Langley Community Farmers Market. “I joined the chamber in 2004 as a brand-new entrepreneur,” she said. “I was a little nervous at first, but I quickly learned the power of being part of a business organization. At the recent B.C. Chamber annual general meeting, I really appreciated the power of the chamber network, and the work it does to effect change for the business community and the economy.” She paid tribute to outgoing president Bonetti and presented her with a framed photo of a storm moving through Langley, one that was taken by Bonetti’s son Lorenzo. There was no election of directors at
this year’s annual general meeting, with all new board members being elected by acclamation. The first vice-president is Jeremy East of BDO Canada. Second vicepresident is Brian Dougherty of Horizon Landscape Contractors. Community directors are Viviane Barber of Facet Advisors for North Langley; Michelle Chandra of Sutton West Coast Realty for Aldergrove; Danielle Nielsen of Aldergrove Credit Union for South Langley and Scott Johnston of Campbell, Burton and McMullan for Langley City. Directors at large for the coming year are Sharon Newberry of Rheanew Business Solutions; Mary Reeves of Big Brothers Big Sisters, Scott Waddle of Precision Auto Service; Anne Lavack of Kwantlen Polytechnic University; Kris Mohammed of Buy Rite Business Furnishings and Tammy Rea of TD Canada Trust. The new board will take part in a retreat to come up with an action plan for the coming year, and planning is already well underway for the annual Business Excellence Awards, which are presented in October at a gala at the Summit Theatre at Cascades Casino. This year’s gala takes place on Oct. 20.

After a wet June, it’s hard to believe that anything would burn in the outdoors. But when someone threw fireworks at a 200-foot long hedge on Wednesday, the trees caught fire. A 40-foot stretch of 18-foot high trees were destroyed, said Pat Walker of the Township’s fire department. The incident occurred at a townhouse complex at 27411 - 28 Ave.,
Aldergrove. Luckily the flames did not reach any of the buildings. “We are pretty fortunate that we got it under control as fast as we did. We were quite concerned that it could have gone to the residences,” he added. Later the same day, workers who were welding and cutting as they dismantled a building at 8956 - 264 St., in Glen Valley, accidentally set fire to the structure.
“We had it contained within a half hour,” Walker said, adding that the buildings were being taken down to make way for the construction of an off-load chip facility. Walker said that the fires should serve to demonstrate that, despite the rain, things dry up fast. He added that apart from these two fires, Township crews have been kept busy with minor brush fires and a number of medical emergencies.
Strong voice for seniors urged By NATASHA JONES Black Press
When Bob Richter had hip replacement surgery at Langley Memorial Hospital, he was fortunate enough that his wife, Township Councillor Kim Richter, could drive him home. Many other middle aged and older patients weren’t as lucky, she noticed. “Transportation for seniors is a major concern for seniors in this community,” she remarked at the June 11 meeting. Seniors admitted to hospital for surgery and who don’t have family or friends to drive them home cannot rely on public transport, she said.
A new committee for seniors would provide a strong voice and advocacy role, she said in proposing the formation of a Seniors Advisory Committee. Council referred her suggestion to the September council priorities meeting where it will be discussed in context with a letter from Carla Robin, co-ordinator of the Langley Seniors Community Action Table. In a letter to council, Robin said that while a number of “active and knowledgeable” committees exist in Langley “a very significant committee in the affairs of our municipality is missing.” Observing that seniors represent a “large and significant portion of our population” and have much to
offer in experience and expertise, Robin said that Langley seniors have different needs and expectations. “Seniors need a strong voice in the affairs of our community, particularly in the areas where they are most affected,” she said. Robin urged council to take prompt action to form an official Seniors Advisory Committee which would act in concert with existing advisory committees. She suggested that positions on the committee be filled by people who are knowledgeable in aspects of housing, transportation, access, and finances. At least two members should be 65 or over, Robin added.

Propane-fired cannons are among the arsenal of devices farmers can legally use to scare predator birds from their crops. But even though rightto-farm legislation permits them, there is little in the law that governs the intensity of sound, nor how far it travels. Kevin Mitchell made those points when he appeared before Township council on June 11. Mitchell said that the proliferation of blueberry fields in the past 10 years has brought with it a marked increase in the use of propane cannons. Decibel levels at neighbouring homes can exceed levels that are deemed safe by WorkSafe B.C., he said, adding that there is no mention of “allowable noise level.” He asked council why the Township’s bylaw enforcement department refers complaints about propane cannons to the B.C. Blueberry Council. That is one of
the cannons, and screechers which are used by mink farmers to keep rats at bay, “we are going to have a war (between residents and farmers). Sheldon offered a solution: falcons. The mere presence of the raptors can be enough to frighten birds which devour blueberry and

Propane ‘cannon’ solutions sought the issues which the Agricultural Advisory Committee will attempt to answer, after council turned the matter over to them for a report. Mitchell submitted to council information describing the nature of complaints, including the fact that when people can actually see the cannons, or other sources of farm noise, the number of noise complaints increases. These include the loudness, pitch or frequency of noise. The information, from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries, reveals that random noise, or noise that varies in volume or frequency, is more annoying than noise which is predictable or unchanging. This is the second time council has heard complaints about noise associated with blueberry crops. In March, south Aldergrove resident Terry Sheldon told council that unless something is done to stop the annoyance of

VICTORIA – You probably didn’t hear this on TV, the percentage of Canadians deemed “low income” went down slightly in 2010, according to the latest Statistics Canada analysis. This news was delivered in the annual “Income of Canadians” report last week. The share of people who fall below the federal Low-Income Cut-Off (LICO) went from 9.5 per cent to 9.0. The CBC couldn’t bring itself to admit any actual improvement, reporting on its website that the number of people with “low income” was about three million, “virtually unchanged from 2009.” Other media outlets followed the unwritten rule that nothing remotely positive must be presented as news, particularly if it reflects positively on a rightwing government. (Plus they had the Montreal body-parts case to update each day.) This information likely won’t have any effect on the political discussion about “poverty” in B.C. The LICO survey will continue to be used as a measure of absolute poverty, despite the fact that it isn’t. It’s a relative measure that will always designate the same share of people at the low end of the scale. BC Stats, the provincial equivalent of the federal agency, explained this problem in a special report last year. “To illustrate,” the report said, “take a hypothetical
‘Poverty’ declines, nobody notices
future Canada where every citizen earns no less than $100,000 (and assume there has not been rampant inflation in the meantime, such that buying power is not dissimilar to what exists today) and millionaires are common. “In that kind of Canada, those at the low end of the income scale (that is, those earning ‘merely’ $100,000) would be considered poor if LICOs were used as a measure of poverty.” Math aside, that’s the alleged “poverty line” routinely cited by the usual media authorities, like B.C. Federation of Labour president Jim Sinclair. Sinclair campaigned for years to get the B.C. government to raise the minimum wage from $8 to $10 an hour. They did, in three increments, and on May 1 it increased to $10.25 an hour. As soon as the series of three increases was announced last November, Sinclair called a news conference to announce it’s not enough. To get to the LICO level, the minimum wage should be $11.50 an hour, Sinclair said. Of course, if B.C. businesses ponied up for that, the goalposts would shift again and the same proportion of “poverty” would magically still exist. The B.C. NDP government-in-waiting continues to demand an “action plan” on poverty, with annual goals. All the progressive provinces
have one, which I guess is why poverty is all but eradicated in enlightened places like Manitoba. There are signs of the reality behind this political smokescreen. Here’s one. For what may be the first time in history, we now have a North American society where one of the most reliable indicators of poverty is obesity. This often gets explained away with a popular theory that poor people are somehow forced to eat fast food and drink pop because they can’t afford healthy food. People who advance this theory presumably don’t do much grocery shopping. There are plenty of processed, sugary, fat-laden choices at the supermarket too. But there is also whole wheat bread, rice and fresh or frozen vegetables that are as cheap as anywhere in the world. Given basic cooking skills and some effort, it’s easy to demonstrate which diet is cheaper as well as healthier. Most immigrants know this. Which diet you choose isn’t a function of money, but rather one of education and self-discipline. There is genuine poverty in our society. One of the things that’s needed is a useful way to define it. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com tfletcher@blackpress.ca
The corner of 252 Street and 84 Avenue holds one of Glen Valley’s best kept secrets — a pristine forest of large, 80 to 100-year-old conifer trees that some locals compare to old-growth regions in Stanley Park and Vancouver Island’s Cathedral Grove. But residents fear that this gem may soon be gone. The Township, which acquired the land in the 1930s, is now selling the 21-acre parcel — comprised of one five-acre and two eight-acre Agriculture Land Reserve plots — in order to raise funds to purchase the empty Aldergrove Elementary School building on Fraser Highway. The school will be turned into a recreation centre for the community. While the Glen Valley residents say they have no intention of halting the purchase of the school and, in fact, support the proposal, they believe the money for the Aldergrove Elementary site should come from somewhere else. “This is about preserving (the forest) for all present and future residents of all areas of Langley, a site that cannot be relocated or purchased elsewhere at any price in the future,” Glen Valley resident Stuart Bucholtz told council on Monday evening. “This treasure belongs to all the people of all of Langley and we respectfully seek a stay of execution of this rare forest,” he said. The decision to sell the land was made at an in-camera council meeting in September, 2011. Since then, a new mayor and three new councillors have been elected. The parcels at 252 Street and 84 Avenue are three of eight pieces of land being sold to help pay for the Aldergrove site. The others are five-acre lots located outside the ALR at 257A Street and 84 Avenue. If all eight parcels are sold at their appraised values, they will generate more money than is needed to purchase Aldergrove Elementary School, Mayor Jack Froese told Black Press.
No “for sale” signs have been installed at the any of the properties. Instead they were put up for sale on the BC Bid website in May, and the bids will be closed this Friday ( June 29) at 2 p.m. However, this does not mean that the properties will necessarily be sold on June 29, Froese said. “The process is not over just because the bidding closes; we still have to review it. There are several pieces of land for sale and council may decided to sell all of them, or part of them, or none of them,” Froese said. “We are looking for ways to fund an Aldergrove community centre. It’s a priority this council has taken on. We look at everything, but we have to look at what is good for the Township.” At the end of his presentation Bucholtz handed council a petition bearing the names of 225 area residents who are opposed to the land sale, which were collected less than a week before the council meeting. Bucholtz did not become aware of the sale until a week ago, and says that most of the petitioners were not aware, either. They suggest that Township sell a different piece of land to raise the money for the Aldergrove building. “People go to Vancouver Island and beyond to walk amongst intact forest. This site is within 20 minutes of anywhere in Langley,” Bucholtz’s son, Solon, read from a statement to council. “This site should be the jewel in the crown of a trail network, not a parking lot trailhead to narrow walkways between private properties. This is a regional destination treasure of a park site. “Surely the approximate $2 million that may be realized from the sale of this site is a relatively small amount in the big picture and can be generated elsewhere. “Possibly other Township lands that have no natural forest and are no longer used by the Township could be considered, or other funding methods,” he said.

Zimbabwe bush doctor, Rotarians raising hospital cash, awareness Black Press
While B.C.’s medical system has its faults, imagine trying to get health care in rural Zimbabwe, where the death rate of mothers in pregnancy or delivery is 790 per 100,000 deliveries, compared to six per 100,000 in Canada per year. Canadian Dr. Paul Thistle, who has lived and worked as a bush doctor for 16 years at the Salvation Army’s Howard Hospital in Zimbabwe, is coming to Langley June 27 to advocate for his patients and their growing needs there. The Rotary Clubs of Aldergrove and Langley are hosting a reception for him at the Gateway of Hope. The public is welcome to come hear his stories and see pictures from one Aldergrove Rotarian’s recent trip to Zimbabwe and the Howard Hospital. “Dr. Thistle has this incredible calm among the busyness of that hospital,” said Katy Loewen, an Aldergrove Rotarian who made her latest trip to Zimbabwe with her husband and two teenagers in March. “You and I would be overwhelmed if we saw how many people are needing medical atten-

Often Thistle is the only doctor to serve the more than 270,000 people who live in and around the area. Some of the sick walk 14 miles to seek medical treatment and then have to wait hours for help. “The hospital is in desperate need of staff. They are desperate need of medical supplies,” said Loewen. “Even pharmaceuticals would be a huge help.” That’s where Langley comes in, said Rotarian Brendan Martin who
has been working hard to fundraise to help the Howard Hospital and Dr. Thistle. “I’m happy to report that we, the four Rotary Clubs of Aldergrove/ Langley, are now 55 per cent of the way towards reaching our goal of $105,000 for medical equipment for Salvation Army Howard Hospital in Zimbabwe,” said Martin, founder of International Health Langley, which is a fundraising arm of the Rotary Clubs that help hospitals in poor nations. “The maternal mortality rate relating to pregnancy/childbirth is 100 times that of ours in Canada,” said Martin. “This fact is enough to stop us in our tracks
at least for a little while, to think of mothers so unfairly visited by death while giving life to another.” One of the purchases that money in Langley will buy is an X-ray machine that will help mothers through their pregnancies from detecting breeches to other problems. Most women in Zimbabwe have around four children each, said Loewen. But many of those women are infected with HIV, which brings many complications to pregnancy and post-birth. Prostitution is rampant there, said Loewen, with woman selling their bodies to feed their babies. HIV and Tuberculosis are epidemic. “The HIV rates among women is staggering which leads to the two million orphans that live in Zimbabwe,” she said. When Loewen first visited Zimbabwe in 2009 to help in an orphanage, she brought many of her family, including her sister-in-law from Manitoba who is a registered nurse. They held a mini-clinic to clean up wounds, help with skin infections, treat worms and even hand out Aspirin she had brought. “Even for that clinic,
people walked miles to get to us and wait in line to seek help. Doing that gave them hope,” she said. But for all the struggles, “there is this incredible sense of joy among people there,” she said. She said Africa “gets into your blood” and her family has taken two trips, but those won’t be their last. HOSPITAL A LIFELINE FOR 270,000 Howard Mission Hospital has been administered by the Salvation Army since 1923, serving the medical, social and spiritual needs of the Chiweshe villages and surrounding farm areas. Howard Hospital serves more than 270,000 people, predominantly comprised of economically vulnerable subsistence farmers. To fulfill its mission, the hospital offers a full range of medical and surgical services, including in-patient care with 144 beds, outpatients, and maternity services with 2,700 deliveries per year. The hospital also operates nursing and midwifery schools. Howard Hospital was one of the first hospitals in Zimbabwe chosen to implement HIV/AIDS treatment.

Spotlight on Barwick at Paralympic Games FROM FRONT: Along with her horse Maile, Barwick’s success helped propel the sport of para-dressage into the spotlight. A strong support team will accompany the riders and horses to London, including coaches, chef d’équipe, grooms, a physiotherapist and veterinarian, working to ensure that the world-class athletes are fully prepared to achieve greatness at the 2012 Games. “Canada will once again field a strong equestrian team in what promises to be a memorable competition in iconic Greenwich Park,” said Gaétan Tardif, Team Canada’s Chef de Mission for the London 2012 Paralympic Games. “I very much look forward to watching our Canadian athletes in action.” “I am very confident that we have a strong team, with some outstanding horses. We expect to be very competitive at the Games,” said Elizabeth Quigg, chef d’équipe for the Canadian Para-Equestrian Team. “We have a very talented team of athletes, horses, coaches, and team personnel who have achieved great success over the
past year,” said Amie O’Shaughnessy, Director of Para-Equestrian and Paralympic Team Manager at Equine Canada. “The support of Own the Podium, the Canadian Paralympic Committee, and Sport Canada combined with the tremendous efforts of the athletes, has ranked the Canadian team fourth in the world heading into the Games, which will make for a very exciting experience in London.” The selection process for the Canadian Paralympic riders was based on their performances at international events during the qualifying period running between January through to June 1, 2012. At the Paralympic Games, individual medals are awarded to athletes in the individual and freestyle tests, as well as an overall team medal. Seventy-eight athletes will compete at the Paralympic Games during the 12 days of competition. Para-Equestrian is one of Canada’s most successful international disciplines, achieving an individual gold medal and an individual silver medal at the 2008 Paralympic Games, as well as two individual

Feast your eyes and stomach on fresh strawberries Aldergrove Star
Get Growing!
Get out the canning jars, whip up the cream, and get ready to enjoy another crop of burstingwith-flavour local strawberries. Lower Mainland consumers know that the arrival of Fraser Valley strawberries means summer’s here, and with it the chance to enjoy the wonderful flavour
and health benefits of local produce. Packed with vitamin C, antioxidants, and other essential vitamins, Fraser Valley strawberries are also flavour powerhouses. Ripened naturally in local fields, these berries are handpicked at the peak of perfection. Shipped to local markets within a day, these berries burst with the
robust old-time flavour and justright natural sweetness that are hard to find in imported berries. And local strawberries are wonderfully versatile. Of course, you’ll love them eaten fresh. But consumers also appreciate the many ways that Fraser Valley strawberries can be preserved so their summer-fresh flavour can
be enjoyed all year long in jams, jellies, or simply frozen. Buying local strawberries means you’re getting the finest product available on the market, while supporting local producers and sustainable growing practices. Delicious B.C. strawberries – watch for them at a select grocer or “U-pick” producer near you.

Museum parties for Canada Day Aldergrove Star
On Canada Day, people across the country will be celebrating everything that makes our country great. Why not join them by marking the occasion in Fort Langley, a place filled with history, art, culture, entertainment, and information? A free, fun, family event will be jointly hosted by the Langley Centennial Museum and the B.C. Agricultural and Farm Museum, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., on Sunday, July 1. Located at 9135 King Street in Fort Langley, the museum will be hosting a variety of Canada Day events and activities, including crafts, face painting, food vendors, balloon artistry, and old fashioned games and races. This year, the celebration will also feature the new One Can Arts Festival, where many local artists will be selling their art onsite. Other additions to
this year’s event include a scavenger hunt throughout the museum and the Fowle Foto photo booth, which will be on hand so guests can take fun pictures to remember their 2012 Canada Day. As well, a number of performances and workshops will be offered. The main stage will feature the Red Stone Alley Band, Mr. Bubbles Children’s Show, and Swell Guys. In the workshops, guests can learn about everything from sculpture, watercolours, and acrylic ink to how to create jewelry and make prints. At noon, an opening ceremony will feature greetings from local dignitaries, Glisha Dela Cruz singing the national anthem, and a drumming performance by Team Cheondoong. Free Canada Day cake will also be served to guests For a full schedule, visit langleymuseum.org

Harrison Festival line-up includes Grammy nominees By JESSICA PETERS Black Press
Summer is just around the corner, and that means the schedule for the Harrison Festival of the Arts has been announced. This year’s festival lineup is an eclectic mix of sounds from around the globe. It will run from July 7 to 15, filling up the beachfront every day, and spilling out of the hall each night. Evenings in the hall will start
off with blues singer Shakura S’Aida ( July 6), Markus James and the Wassonrai ( July 7) and four-time Grammy nominees Cedric Watson with Bijou Creole ( July 8). The Literary Cafe is back, with readings by Alex Leslie and Kevin Chong on July 9. Music by John Gilliat will be a part of that evening, as well. On July 10, plays from the 2012 UFV Theatre Directors
Festival will be featured. Then it’s back to the music on July 11, when Sketch hits the stage with their new wave of Celtic-based dance floor sounds. Other acts to play the hall through the festival are Sidi Toure, Mike Farris and the Cumberland Saints, Niamh Ni Charra Band and Wazimbo. There will also be plenty of beachfront music, including MAZ, the Vancouver

engaging in thrill-seeking activities, and is always looking for the next adrenalin rush. Her parents don’t seem to mind. In fact, they share her addictions, and spend a lot of time enabling them. Since the 15-year-old D.W. Poppy student discovered cutting, she has gone out of her way to lure other young people into a sport that is both affordable and a lot of fun. Long before there were barbed wire fences, cowboys on the open range used horses to separate or ‘cut’ intermingled herds of cattle that belonged to neighbouring ranches. What began as a part of a cowboy’s job has grown into a popular sport enjoyed by both horses and riders. “A lot of the thrill of cutting is working with horses that are so well trained. “It takes a long time to train a cutting horse, but they love what they do,” said Haley. Haley, who started riding on the family farm when she was two years old and came up through the Pony Club ranks, is a rising star in the sport. This summer, she’s going to the Calgary Stampede to cut and will represent Canada in the American Quarter Horse Association World Cup in Germany in July. She rides her two cutting horses every day after school, after her mom lopes them. “My parents are my biggest supporters. They drive me everywhere. It’s kind of cool, actually.” Haley and her parents are members of the BC Ranch Cutting Horse Association (BCRCHA), a

There’s a great bond between us. Even if you don’t own a horse or are just learning there are lots of opportunities to ride. You can lease a horse, or just borrow one. There are lots of older Quarter horses that can do it all around to learn on,” said Haley. Although Quarter horses dominate the sport, other breeds are represented. Even Appaloosas. Langley nurse Carrie Murray decided to buy her first horse three years ago, after watching an allfemale drill team galloping in formation at the Cloverdale Rodeo. She joined the BCRCHA at age 39, although she could barely ride and was the proud owner of a completely unbroken young horse she bought on Craigslist for $1,000. “I told a friend of mine, who
competed in cutting, that I had bought a two-year old Appaloosa. Her first words were ‘What? Are you crazy?’ But there was something about the horse that made my heart melt. That was three years ago. With a lot of hard work and help from the wonderful people in the cutting world, my Appaloosa and I placed first in the novice class at the BCRCHA show held in Aldergrove recently,” said Carrie. Like Haley, she finds the sport easy on the wallet. “I don’t own an expensive cutting saddle, and I ride with what tack I can afford. Entry fees for shows are kept at a reasonable level so anyone can enjoy the sport,” she added. For more information on the BCRCHA, visit the club website at www.bcrcha.com. Gala raises thousands for schools By Miranda Gathercole Black Press
Students in Langley struggling with basic math skills will now have the opportunity to get extra, thanks to efforts from the Langley School District Foundation. A total of $51,000 was raised at the seventh annual Grand Prix Gala, held at Thunderbird Show Park on June 3, which will be used to purchase “Do the Math” kits for the school district. Nearly 70 per cent of high school students who do not graduate from Grade 12 are prevented from graduating by poor math skills, said Susan Cairns, executive director of the Langley School District Foundation. “A lot of times what happens is some kids miss the concepts early on, but it’s not really recognized,” she said. “They keep getting passed and going through the system until
about Grade 10. Then it becomes clear they can’t do math properly, they’ve missed it along the way. That’s quite tragic, they can’t go on to university programs and a lot of times they don’t graduate at all.” The kits are designed to teach these kids the basic math concepts to help students who have fallen behind catch up. Last year, money raised at the annual event went to furnishing schools with the online Kurzweil software — a reading, writing and study skills program to help students with learning disabilities learn at the same gradelevel as their classmates. This year’s grand prix event featured a worldclass horse jumping competition, wine tasting, gourmet food and a silent auction which raised $10,000. “Even though it was a little chilly, the event went

The final game of the spring season for Mosquito baseball was played on Saturday, June 23 at Aldergrove Athletic Park. The top two teams played a hard-fought six inning game for the Aldergrove Minor Baseball Mosquito House League Championship. It featured the All Stars taking on the Red Sox. The game was a thrill ride for both the players and fans. The two teams were tied after one inning, 3-3. In the next two innings the All Stars managed only three runs while the Red Sox capitalized on their bats by scoring seven runs. The Red Sox defence kept the All Stars at bay with outstanding defensive plays from Dylan Neilson, Mitchell Charbonneau and Tyson Tombe. The 18th edition of Clash@The Cascades saw some last minute changes, however, the 300 fans enjoyed a night of boxing with a high number of stoppages. The main event was a Light Heavyweight tilt between Chad Gerow of Revolution Langley and Darren Featherstone, fighting out of Bisla Martial Arts. At stake was a City title. The first round started slowly but as the round progressed Gerow started to find an overhand right. This punch hurt Featherstone, however, he pressed the fight into the second. The Gerow right was not to be denied and the fight went into the books as a second round TKO win for Gerow. Scott Woodward of Four Corners boxed for the first time, taking on Mark Magano, 17, of Action Boxing. The first round was very competitive and entertaining. The second round started the same until the halfway mark when Woodward tired and Magano just kept on going. Referee Matt Lee wisely stopped the fight in the second round. In a draw bout 11 year old Josh Lauriente and 12 year old Anthony Patrignan, both of Port Kells, boxed in their first bout. Jillian Sask of Port Kells and Kate Robinson Action participated in a very competitive public spar. Next up is Friday the 13th, the tag name of Clash 19, which will take place on Friday, July 13. Former Canadian Champion Gord Racette has a prospect in 18-yearold heavyweight Russell Leske, who will make his debut when he faces Dustin Turkey of Blue Corner. ANDREATTA TO RETURN TO RING Brookswood grad Matt Andreatta got good news on two fronts last week. He found out he had been accepted to UBC and will start in the fall and has worked things out so he can continue his promising boxing career.
