✞ Obituaries BURNS David John
Passed away June 8, 2012 in Chilliwack, B.C. David was born August 24, 1940 Dartford, County of BURNS Kent, England. David is survived by son Stephen (Corinne) Burns; grandchildren: Danielle, Justin and Joleen. He was predeceased by wife Sylvia; parents, Herbert and Rosabel; brother, Robert and sister Joan. David immigrated to Canada in 1968, where he continued his career as a registered nurse until 1996 when he retired. He was an amateur pilot/aviation enthusiast, avid fisherman, enjoyed walking and dedicated sports television fan. A Memorial Service will take place Saturday June 16, 2012 at 11:00 AM, at Mt. Cheam Lions Club Hall 45580 Spadina Ave. Chilliwack, B.C. In lieu of flowers donations would be greatly appreciated to Canadian Cancer Society.
CRUTCH Phebe “Ellen”
(nee Pamphilon) Ellen passed on Wednesday, May 23, 2012 at Cascade Hospice in Chilliwack at the age of 97. Ellen was born on June 10, 1914 in Biggar, Sask. to Horace and Lillian Pamphilon. She was the eldest of five children. Ellen graduated as a registered nurse in 1937 in London, England. She married Reginald Brown on October 6, 1938 in London and they had four children. She later returned to nursing in 1959 having qualified as a Queen’s District Nurse, and was privileged to be invited to a tea party for all the Queen’s District Nurses which was held on the lawn of Buckingham Palace. Her husband Reginald died in 1959. Shortly thereafter Ellen returned to Canada with her two youngest children and worked as a registered nurse at a hospital in Saskatoon. She graduated as a Public Health Nurse from Dalhousie University in 1972 and went to work with the First Nations Indians, first at Alexis Creek in the Chilcotins and later in Lytton. Having retired, she moved to Kelowna where she met and married William Olson on October 11, 1978. They eventually settled in Chilliwack. William died in 1996. Ellen later married Colin Crutch on December 27, 2000 in Chilliwack and lived in Sardis from 2000 until her passing in 2012. She was an active member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Women’s League. Ellen is survived by her husband Colin; her two daughters: Margaret and Julia; her two sons, Rowland and Philip; seven grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 26, 2012 at 2:00pm at St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Mary Street, Chilliwack. A reception for family and friends will follow in the Church Hall. In lieu of flowers donations to the Chilliwack Hospice would be appreciated.
DEKOFF Hildagart (Hilda)
1924 - 2012 Hildagart “Hilda” Dekoff was born August 18, 1924 and passed away peacefully June 9, DEKOFF 2012 in the Chilliwack General Hospital at the age of 87 years. She was a dear mother, much loved grandmother and true friend to many. She will be forever loved and missed by her sons Larry (Anita); and Lorne (Lorrie); and her four surviving grandchildren: Lindsay and Dallas, Dinel and Halle, (whom she prayed for daily); as well as family members and friends. The grandkids knew Mom as their “Omie”. Hilda was predeceased by her loving husband Samuel “Sam” in April 1994, and her first precious grandson Travis in August 2003, as well as her three brothers Herbert, Alfred and Ewald. Hilda was born in Novayard, Russia to parents Martin and Hulda Trelenberg. She was a graduate with honours at Northwest Bible College in Edmonton, Alberta as valedictorian of her class. Hildagart married Samuel on November 13, 1953 in Leduc, Alberta. After their honeymoon to British Columbia, Sam and Hilda made their first home together in Greendale, and later moved to Chilliwack where they remained and raised their two sons together. Hilda was a faithful Christian and member of Central Pentecostal Assembly in Chilliwack. Hilda was a prayer warrior; she took this role very seriously, praying for her children and grandchildren and many other people in her life. In her earlier years she was a seamstress by profession, sewing many sets of drapes for Palm Draperies, and she also sewed dresses for many of her relatives and friends. Hilda was the first secretary for Larry’s Insulating from 1974 till 1985, from her home she answered the calls and helped her boys as they ran the business on the job sites. Hilda was also known for her “two green thumbs.” If it was green, she could make it grow! She enjoyed spending much of her pass-time nurturing blueberry bushes, flowers, and gardening. Hilda lived a full life, loved her family, loved her church, and truly loved her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. She never hesitated to share her faith with anyone, a true woman of God, and she looked forward to going to heaven with much enthusiasm. “Mom, we know you would not want us to mourn at your going to Heaven, so we rejoice in knowing we will see you again. You have passed through the barrier of time here on earth as we know it, and have walked into the tender arms of Jesus.” The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Norman Manor where Hilda had been residing, for their exceptional care and kindness. A Celebration of Life will be held on June 18, 2012 at
Woodlawn Mt. Cheam Funeral Home, 45865 Hocking Ave. Chilliwack with public viewing from 8:30 am – 9:45 am and memorial to begin at 10:00 am. Refreshments will follow after the service. Graveside service at 1:00 pm at Chilliwack Cemeteries, 10010 Hillcrest Drive. GIFFIN Jacqueline Ruth
(nee Poff) Jacqueline Ruth (Poff) Giffin passed away on May 30, 2012 at Abbotsford, BC at the age of 97 GIFFEN years. She was born in Stanberry MO, Gentry County. Jackie came to Canada in the early 1900’s with her parents. In February 1934 she married Hugh Green and resided in Fort William, ON. She later moved to BC in the early 1950’s and has been here since. Jackie is survived by three daughters; Lois Morris, of Tacoma, Washington, Christina (Tina) Meagher (Terry Stott) of Comox, BC, and Maureen Austin of Jackson, Mississippi. One granddaughter Jennifer Morris; grandson: Sam Meagher; four greatgrandchildren and six greatgreat-grandchildren and also a sister-in-law Margaret Poff, a niece and nephew all of Winnipeg, MB. She was predeceased by her husbands, son David (infant), two grandchildren and brother Robert. A Memorial will be held on Thursday, August 16, 2012, 11:00 AM from the Chilliwack Seventh-Day Adventist Church on 46024 Riverside Dr. Chilliwack. Gerald was predeceased by his son Wayne, on April 16, 2011; his mom and dad, Isabelle and Stan Hill of Chilliwack; brothers: Howard and Earl of Sask, Clifford and Garfield of Alta, Cecil of Kelowna, BC; and sister Lorraine of Chilliwack. Gerald was a quiet, hard working, gentle man who adored his family. He especially loved all the babies. He will be missed by all his family, relatives and friends.
McDANIEL Reta
Oct 13, 1924 - June 8, 2012 It is with great sadness, we announce the passing of Reta on June 8, 2012, in her 88th year. MONSON Gordon Melvin
Gordon Melvin Monson passed away peacefully in the Chilliwack General Hospital, June 8, 2012 MONSON with family by his side, following a courageous battle with non-Hodgkins lymphoma and heart disease. Gordon was born at Mt. Lehman, BC, November 26, 1935 to Eddie and Mary Monson (Haines) where he was raised with siblings, Glen, Ian, June, Irene and Roy. In 1953, the family moved to Chilliwack where Gordon continued to reside until his passing. Gordon spent his working years in the logging industry and retired from Cattermole Logging Company in 2000. Gordon is predeceased by his parents, Eddie (1966) and Mary (1982), wife Carol (2006), brother Glen (1992) and sister June (2008). He is survived by his daughter, Barb; grandchildren, Kailey and Karley, son Bruce, brothers Ian (Pat) of Campbell River, and Roy (Ester) of Armstrong, sister Irene (Allen) of Chilliwack, brotherin-law Richard of Chilliwack, and many nieces and nephews and Sasha the cat, his very special companion. PACKER Jack Aug. 9, 1934 - May 11, 2012 John died peacefully at Chilliwack Hospice. He was pre deceased by his parents, Thomas and Kathleen, siblings Tom, Pat, Eileen, Vic and step brother Steve. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Ellen, daughter Karen (Mark Kelly), grandson Matthew of Cochrane, AB and daughter Sarah (Dennis Kwong); granddaughters: Maggie and Kitty of Chilliwack, BC; nieces, nephews and a sister-in-law in Canada, England and Australia. John was an avid racquet sports man. In retirement he enjoyed several sailing voyages on “Tall Ships”, trips to Australia, India and Bhutan and hiking The Rockies, all items on his “Bucket List”. John and Ellen enjoyed many years of “Snowbirding” in Florida, Mexico and California as well as many cruises. “Celebration of Life” will take place Sunday, June 24th at 1:30 PM at Promontory Lake Estates club house, 6001 Promontory Road. PEAKE Eveline Irene ‘Rene’
Rene Peake of Chilliwack passed away on Saturday June 2, 2012 at the age of 60. PEAKE She is survived by her husband, Wally; sons: Jordan and Caleb, sisters: Noel (Gary) and Jeanette (Ron), niece Niki and nephew Jessie. Rene was born in 1952 in Richmond BC. She taught school in Ocean Falls and Merritt before settling in Chilliwack where she taught at McCammon and Sardis Elementary. A Powa practice for the deceased was held Saturday June 9, 2012 at Dorjechang Buddhist Centre in Abbotsford and a memorial celebration was held Wednesday June 13, 2012 at Clayburn Community Hall. PEARSON Dorothy Annie
Dot Pearson passed away at Cascades Hospice on May 30th, 2012, on her 85th birthday. Dot was PEARSON born in Kamloops, B.C., but moved to Vancouver at an early age. She worked at Manson’s Jewellers and Woodwards Department Store before moving to Chilliwack to marry husband Harold, who she met on Cultus Lake in a sinking row boat. They were married for nearly 60 years and he predeceased her in April. Dot worked at Canada Post before raising her family. Her son Jay was born with a disability and lived under her care at home for an amazing 50 years. She is survived by her daughter, Jill; her son, Jay; and sister Joan Altar (Vancouver). No funeral by request. Flowers gratefully declined.
SMITH John
John Smith passed away peacefully from cancer on June 11, 2012 at home at the age of 85. SMITH John was born in Lancashire, England, one of four children. He was a SMITH sailor, logger, carpenter and exceptional bird carver. He’ll be remembered by a small private family gathering. Her family would like to thank the caring staff of the 3rd Floor Medical ward at Chilliwack General Hospital who cared for her during her last ten days. A visitation for family and friends will take place at Henderson’s Funeral Home on Saturday, June 16 at 9:00 am followed by interment in Chilliwack Cemetery. SCHIWY, Lilli
(nee Fender) Oct. 2, 1930 – June 8, 2012 Lilli Schiwy was born in Poland. She was the oldest of four children and had two sisters and one brother. Her German parents, Pauline and Ludwig Fender, were deeply SCHIWY rooted in the Evangelical faith, and Lilli was a born again Christian from her young years. The family were refugees to Germany during the war years, and Lilli immigrated to Canada in 1949. In 1951, she married Henry Schiwy and they enjoyed a happy and blessed life in Chilliwack for over sixty years. They had three children during those years. Throughout the second half of her life, Lilli was plagued by many chronic health is-
